1 Ich habe euch diese Dinge gesagt, damit ihr den Glauben nicht verliert. 2 Denn ihr werdet aus den Synagogen ausgeschlossen werden, und es wird die Zeit kommen, in der die, die euch töten, glauben, Gott damit einen Dienst zu erweisen. (Joh 9,22) 3 Das tun sie, weil sie den Vater und mich nicht erkannt haben. (Joh 15,21) 4 Ja, ich sage euch diese Dinge jetzt, damit ihr euch daran erinnert, wenn sie eintreffen. Ich habe nicht früher davon gesprochen, weil ich noch bei euch war. (Joh 13,19)

Das Wirken des Heiligen Geistes

5 Nun aber gehe ich fort zu dem, der mich gesandt hat, doch keiner von euch hat mich gefragt, wohin ich gehe. (Joh 7,33; Joh 13,36) 6 Stattdessen seid ihr traurig. 7 Ich sage euch aber die Wahrheit: Es ist das Beste für euch, dass ich fortgehe, denn wenn ich nicht gehe, wird der Ratgeber nicht kommen. Wenn ich jedoch fortgehe, wird er kommen, denn ich werde ihn zu euch senden. (Joh 14,26; Joh 15,26) 8 Und wenn er kommt, wird er die Welt von ihrer Sünde und von Gottes Gerechtigkeit und vom Gericht überzeugen. 9 Die Sünde der Welt ist, dass sie nicht an mich glaubt. (Joh 15,22) 10 Die Gerechtigkeit erweist sich darin, dass ich zum Vater gehe und ihr mich nicht mehr sehen werdet. (Apg 3,14; Apg 7,52; Röm 1,17; 1Petr 3,18)

11 Das Gericht bedeutet, dass der Herrscher dieser Welt schon gerichtet ist. (Joh 12,31) 12 Ich hätte euch noch so vieles zu sagen, aber ihr könnt es jetzt nicht ertragen. 13 Doch wenn der Geist der Wahrheit kommt, wird er euch in der ganzen Wahrheit leiten. Er wird nicht seine eigenen Anschauungen vertreten, sondern wird euch sagen, was er gehört hat. Er wird euch von dem erzählen, was kommt. (Joh 14,17) 14 Er wird mich verherrlichen, indem er euch alles offenbart, was er von mir empfängt. 15 Alles, was der Vater hat, gehört mir; das habe ich gemeint, als ich sagte, dass der Geist euch alles offenbaren wird, was er von mir empfängt. (Joh 17,10)

Traurigkeit wird sich in Freude verwandeln

16 Schon sehr bald werdet ihr mich nicht mehr sehen. Dann, nach einer weiteren kurzen Zeit, werdet ihr mich wiedersehen.« (Joh 14,18) 17 Da fragten die Jünger einander: »Was meint er damit: ›Ihr werdet mich nicht sehen und dann werdet ihr mich wiedersehen‹? Was soll das bedeuten: ›Ich gehe zum Vater‹? 18 Und was heißt ›eine kurze Zeit‹? Das verstehen wir nicht.« 19 Jesus merkte, dass sie ihn gern gefragt hätten. Deshalb sagte er: »Ihr fragt euch, was ich gemeint habe? Ich sagte, dass ich sehr bald fort sein werde und ihr mich nicht mehr sehen werdet. Dann, nach einer weiteren kurzen Zeit, werdet ihr mich wiedersehen. 20 Ich versichere euch: Ihr werdet weinen und trauern über das, was mit mir geschehen wird, aber die Welt wird sich freuen. Ihr werdet trauern, doch eure Trauer wird sich von einem Augenblick zum anderen in große Freude verwandeln, wenn ihr mich wiederseht. (Mk 16,10; Lk 23,27; Joh 20,20) 21 Es wird sein wie bei einer Frau in den Wehen. Wenn ihr Kind erst geboren ist, verblassen die Schmerzen angesichts der Freude, dass ein neuer Mensch zur Welt gekommen ist. (Jes 13,8; Jes 21,3; Jes 26,17; Apg 13,33; Kol 1,18)

22 Jetzt seid ihr traurig, aber ich werde euch wiedersehen, und dann werdet ihr euch freuen, und niemand kann euch diese Freude nehmen. (Jes 66,14; Joh 20,20) 23 Wenn es so weit ist, werdet ihr mich um nichts mehr bitten müssen. Ich versichere euch: Dann könnt ihr selbst zum Vater gehen und ihn bitten, und er wird eure Bitte erfüllen, weil ihr in meinem Namen bittet. (Joh 14,20; Joh 16,26) 24 Bis jetzt habt ihr das nicht getan. Bittet in meinem Namen, und ihr werdet empfangen, dann wird eure Freude vollkommen sein. (Joh 15,11) 25 Bis jetzt habe ich über diese Dinge in Gleichnissen^[1] geredet, aber es kommt die Zeit, in der das nicht mehr nötig sein wird; dann werde ich offen mit euch reden und euch alles über den Vater erzählen. (Ps 78,2; Joh 10,6) 26 Und dann werdet ihr in meinem Namen bitten. Ich sage nicht, dass ich den Vater für euch bitten werde, 27 denn der Vater selbst hat euch lieb, weil ihr mich liebt und glaubt, dass ich von Gott ausgegangen bin. (Joh 8,42; Joh 14,21; Joh 17,8) 28 Ich kam vom Vater in die Welt, und ich werde die Welt verlassen und zum Vater zurückkehren.« (Joh 13,3) 29 Da sagten seine Jünger: »Endlich sprichst du offen und nicht mehr in Gleichnissen. 30 Jetzt verstehen wir, dass du alles weißt und nicht darauf angewiesen bist, dass irgendjemand dir etwas sagt.^[2] Deshalb glauben wir, dass du von Gott gekommen bist.« 31 Jesus fragte: »Jetzt glaubt ihr? 32 Doch es kommt die Zeit – ja, sie ist schon angebrochen –, da werdet ihr zerstreut werden, und jeder wird seine eigenen Wege gehen und mich verlassen. Doch ich bin nicht allein, denn der Vater ist bei mir. (Sach 13,7; Mt 26,31; Joh 8,29) 33 Ich habe euch das alles gesagt, damit ihr in mir Frieden habt. Hier auf der Erde werdet ihr viel Schweres erleben. Aber habt Mut, denn ich habe die Welt überwunden.« (Joh 14,27; Röm 5,1; Röm 8,37; 1Joh 5,4)

1 ‘I have told you all this so that you will not turn away from the truth. 2 You will be thrown out of the synagogue. In fact, the time is coming when someone may kill you. And they will think they are doing God a favour. 3 They will do things like that because they do not know the Father or me. 4 Why have I told you this? So that when their time comes, you will remember that I warned you about them. I didn’t tell you this from the beginning because I was with you. 5 But now I am going to the one who sent me. None of you asks me, “Where are you going?” 6 Instead, you are filled with sadness because I have said these things. 7 But what I’m about to tell you is true. It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Friend will not come to help you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 When he comes, he will prove that the world’s people are guilty. He will prove their guilt concerning sin and godliness and judgment. 9 The world is guilty as far as sin is concerned. That’s because people do not believe in me. 10 The world is guilty as far as godliness is concerned. That’s because I am going to the Father, where you can’t see me anymore. 11 The world is guilty as far as judgment is concerned. That’s because the devil, the prince of this world, has already been judged. 12 ‘I have much more to say to you. It is more than you can handle right now. 13 But when the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own. He will speak only what he hears. And he will tell you what is still going to happen. 14 He will bring me glory. That’s because what he receives from me he will show to you. 15 Everything that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said what the Holy Spirit receives from me he will show to you.’

The disciples’ sadness will turn into joy

16 Jesus continued, ‘In a little while, you will no longer see me. Then after a little while, you will see me.’ 17 After they heard this, some of his disciples spoke to one another. They said, ‘What does he mean by saying, “In a little while, you will no longer see me. Then after a little while, you will see me”? And what does he mean by saying, “I am going to the Father”?’ 18 They kept asking, ‘What does he mean by “a little while”? We don’t understand what he is saying.’ 19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about these things. So he said to them, ‘Are you asking one another what I meant? Didn’t you understand when I said, “In a little while, you will no longer see me. Then after a little while, you will see me”? 20 What I’m about to tell you is true. You will weep and mourn while the world is full of joy. You will be sad, but your sadness will turn into joy. 21 A woman giving birth to a baby has pain. That’s because her time to give birth has come. But when her baby is born, she forgets the pain. She forgets because she is so happy that a baby has been born into the world. 22 That’s the way it is with you. Now it’s your time to be sad. But I will see you again. Then you will be full of joy. And no one will take away your joy. 23 When that day comes, you will no longer ask me for anything. What I’m about to tell you is true. My Father will give you anything you ask for in my name. 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask, and you will receive what you ask for. Then your joy will be complete. 25 ‘I have not been speaking to you plainly. But a time is coming when I will speak clearly. Then I will tell you plainly about my Father. 26 When that day comes, you will ask for things in my name. I am not saying I will ask the Father instead of you asking him. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me. He also loves you because you have believed that I came from God. 28 I came from the Father and entered the world. Now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.’ 29 Then Jesus’ disciples said, ‘Now you are speaking plainly. You are using examples that are clear. 30 Now we can see that you know everything. You don’t even need anyone to ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God.’ 31 ‘Do you believe now?’ Jesus replied. 32 ‘A time is coming when you will be scattered and go to your own homes. In fact, that time is already here. You will leave me all alone. But I am not really alone. My Father is with me. 33 ‘I have told you these things, so that you can have peace because of me. In this world you will have trouble. But be encouraged! I have won the battle over the world.’
