1In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea2and saying, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.’3This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: ‘A voice of one calling in the wilderness, “Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.” ’ (Isa 40:3)4John’s clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt round his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.5People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan.6Confessing their sins, they were baptised by him in the River Jordan.7But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptising, he said to them: ‘You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?8Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.9And do not think you can say to yourselves, “We have Abraham as our father.” I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.10The axe has been laid to the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.11‘I baptise you with[1] water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptise you with[2] the Holy Spirit and fire.12His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing-floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.’
The baptism of Jesus
13Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptised by John.14But John tried to deter him, saying, ‘I need to be baptised by you, and do you come to me?’15Jesus replied, ‘Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfil all righteousness.’ Then John consented.16As soon as Jesus was baptised, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him.17And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.’
1În zilele acelea, a venit Ioan Botezătorul, predicând în pustia Iudeei (Mr 1:2; Lu 3:1; Joh 1:19)2și zicând: „Pocăiți‑vă, căci s‑a apropiat Împărăția Cerurilor[1]!“3Căci acesta este cel despre care s‑a vorbit prin profetul Isaia, care zice: „Un glas al celui ce strigă în pustie: «Pregătiți calea Domnului, neteziți‑I cărările!»“[2] (Isa 40:3)4Ioan purta o haină din păr de cămilă, iar în jurul mijlocului avea un brâu de piele. Lăcustele[3] și mierea sălbatică erau hrana lui.5Atunci Ierusalimul, toată Iudeea și toți din vecinătatea Iordanului au început să iasă la el6și, mărturisindu‑și păcatele, erau botezați de el în râul Iordan.7Dar, când a văzut că mulți farisei[4] și saduchei[5] vin la botezul lui, Ioan le‑a zis: „Pui de vipere, cine v‑a avertizat să fugiți de mânia care vine?! (Ac 23:8)8Faceți deci rod vrednic de pocăință!9Și să nu vă gândiți să spuneți în voi înșivă: «Îl avem ca tată pe Avraam!», căci vă spun că Dumnezeu poate să‑i ridice copii lui Avraam chiar din pietrele acestea!10Securea este pusă deja la rădăcina pomilor! Prin urmare, orice pom care nu face rod bun este tăiat și aruncat în foc.11Eu, într-adevăr, vă botez cu[6] apă spre pocăință, dar vine după mine Cel Care este mai puternic decât mine, Căruia eu nu sunt vrednic să‑I dau jos[7] sandalele! El vă va boteza cu Duhul Sfânt și cu foc.12El Își are în mână furca de treierat; Își va curăța aria și Își va aduna grâul în hambar. Pleava însă o va arde într‑un foc care nu se stinge.“
Botezul lui Isus
13Atunci Isus a venit din Galileea la Iordan, la Ioan, ca să fie botezat de el. (Mr 1:9; Lu 3:21; Joh 1:32)14Însă Ioan încerca să‑L oprească, zicând: – Eu am nevoie să fiu botezat de Tine, și Tu vii la mine?15Dar Isus, răspunzând, i‑a zis: – Lasă să fie așa acum, căci se cuvine să împlinim toată dreptatea. Atunci Ioan L‑a lăsat.16După ce a fost botezat, Isus a ieșit imediat din apă. Și iată că cerurile I‑au fost[8] deschise și a văzut Duhul lui Dumnezeu coborând asemenea unui porumbel și venind peste El[9]. (Isa 42:1)17Și iată că un glas din ceruri spunea: „Acesta este Fiul Meu preaiubit, în Care‑Mi găsesc plăcerea!“[10] (Ps 2:7; Isa 42:1)
