1Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted[1] by the devil.2After fasting for forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.3The tempter came to him and said, ‘If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.’4Jesus answered, ‘It is written: “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” ’ (De 8:3)5Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the highest point of the temple.6‘If you are the Son of God,’ he said, ‘throw yourself down. For it is written: ‘ “He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” ’ (Ps 91:11; Ps 91:12)7Jesus answered him, ‘It is also written: “Do not put the Lord your God to the test.” ’ (De 6:16)8Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendour.9‘All this I will give you,’ he said, ‘if you will bow down and worship me.’10Jesus said to him, ‘Away from me, Satan! For it is written: “Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.” ’ (De 6:13)11Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.
Jesus begins to preach
12When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he withdrew to Galilee.13Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali –14to fulfil what was said through the prophet Isaiah:15‘Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles –16the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.’ (Isa 9:1; Isa 9:2)17From that time on Jesus began to preach, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.’
Jesus calls his first disciples
18As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.19‘Come, follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will send you out to fish for people.’20At once they left their nets and followed him.21Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them,22and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
Jesus heals the sick
23Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and illness among the people.24News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralysed; and he healed them.25Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis,[2] Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him.

(De 8:3)5Atunci diavolul L‑a luat în sfânta cetate, L‑a pus să stea pe streașina Templului6și I‑a zis: – Dacă ești Fiul lui Dumnezeu, aruncă‑Te jos, căci este scris: „El le va porunci îngerilor Săi cu privire la Tine“ și „Ei Te vor purta pe brațe, ca nu cumva să‑Ți lovești piciorul de vreo piatră.“[6] (Ps 91:11)7Isus i‑a spus: – De asemenea, este scris: „Să nu‑L ispitești pe Domnul, Dumnezeul tău!“[7] (De 6:16)8Din nou, diavolul L‑a luat pe un munte foarte înalt și I‑a arătat toate regatele lumii și slava lor.9Apoi I‑a zis: – Toate acestea Ți le voi da Ție dacă, aruncându‑Te la pământ, mi Te vei închina.10Atunci Isus i‑a zis: – Pleacă, Satan[8], căci este scris: „Domnului, Dumnezeul tău, să te închini și numai Lui să‑I slujești!“[9] (De 6:13)11Atunci diavolul a plecat de la El. Și iată că niște îngeri s‑au apropiat și Îi slujeau.
Începutul lucrării lui Isus în Galileea
12Când a auzit Isus că Ioan fusese închis, S‑a retras în Galileea. (Mr 1:14; Lu 4:14)13A părăsit Nazaretul și S‑a dus să locuiască în Capernaum, lângă mare[10], în hotarele lui Zabulon și ale lui Neftali,14ca să se împlinească ceea ce a fost spus prin profetul Isaia, care zice:15„Ținutul lui Zabulon și ținutul lui Neftali, calea către mare[11], dincolo de Iordan, Galileea neamurilor.16Poporul care locuia în întuneric a văzut o mare lumină! Peste cei ce locuiau în țara umbrei morții, a răsărit o lumină!“[12] (Isa 9:1)17De atunci încolo, Isus a început să predice și să zică: „Pocăiți‑vă, căci s‑a apropiat Împărăția Cerurilor!“
Chemarea primilor apostoli
18În timp ce mergea pe lângă Marea Galileei[13], Isus a văzut doi frați, pe Simon, zis Petru, și pe Andrei, fratele lui, aruncând un năvod în mare, căci erau pescari. (Mr 1:16; Lu 5:2; Joh 1:35)19El le‑a zis: „Veniți după Mine și vă voi face pescari de oameni!“20Ei și‑au lăsat imediat năvoadele și L‑au urmat.21Mergând mai departe de acolo, El a văzut alți doi frați, pe Iacov, fiul lui Zebedei, și pe Ioan, fratele lui, care erau într‑o barcă împreună cu Zebedei, tatăl lor, și își reparau năvoadele. El i‑a chemat,22iar ei au lăsat imediat barca și pe tatăl lor și L‑au urmat.
Isus vindecă bolnavii
23Isus călătorea prin toată Galileea, dând învățătură în sinagogi[14], predicând Evanghelia[15] Împărăției și vindecând orice boală și orice neputință care erau în popor. (Mr 3:7; Lu 6:17)24Vestea cu privire la El s‑a răspândit în toată Siria[16]. Oamenii îi aduceau la El pe toți cei ce sufereau de diferite boli și pe cei ce erau în chinuri, pe demonizați, pe epileptici[17] și pe cei paralizați, iar El îi vindeca.25Îl urmau mulțimi mari de oameni din Galileea, din Decapolis[18], din Ierusalim, din Iudeea și de dincolo de Iordan.
