1In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar – when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene –2during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness.3He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.4As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: ‘A voice of one calling in the wilderness, “Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.5Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth.6And all people will see God’s salvation.” ’ (Isa 40:3)7John said to the crowds coming out to be baptised by him, ‘You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?8Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, “We have Abraham as our father.” For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.9The axe has been laid to the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.’10‘What should we do then?’ the crowd asked.11John answered, ‘Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.’12Even tax collectors came to be baptised. ‘Teacher,’ they asked, ‘what should we do?’13‘Don’t collect any more than you are required to,’ he told them.14Then some soldiers asked him, ‘And what should we do?’ He replied, ‘Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely – be content with your pay.’15The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah.16John answered them all, ‘I baptise you with[1] water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptise you with[2] the Holy Spirit and fire.17His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing-floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.’18And with many other words John exhorted the people and proclaimed the good news to them.19But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of his marriage to Herodias, his brother’s wife, and all the other evil things he had done,20Herod added this to them all: he locked John up in prison.
The baptism and genealogy of Jesus
21When all the people were being baptised, Jesus was baptised too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened22and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: ‘You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.’23Now Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry. He was the son, so it was thought, of Joseph, the son of Heli,24the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melki, the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph,25the son of Mattathias, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of Esli, the son of Naggai,26the son of Maath, the son of Mattathias, the son of Semein, the son of Josek, the son of Joda,27the son of Joanan, the son of Rhesa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, the son of Neri,28the son of Melki, the son of Addi, the son of Cosam, the son of Elmadam, the son of Er,29the son of Joshua, the son of Eliezer, the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat, the son of Levi,30the son of Simeon, the son of Judah, the son of Joseph, the son of Jonam, the son of Eliakim,31the son of Melea, the son of Menna, the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan, the son of David,32the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Salmon,[3] the son of Nahshon,33the son of Amminadab, the son of Ram,[4] the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah,34the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor,35the son of Serug, the son of Reu, the son of Peleg, the son of Eber, the son of Shelah,36the son of Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem, the son of Noah, the son of Lamech,37the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalalel, the son of Kenan,38the son of Enosh, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.

(Lu 1:80)3Da machte er sich auf, durchzog die ganze Gegend am Jordan und verkündete: »Kehrt um und lasst euch taufen, denn Gott will euch eure Schuld vergeben!« (Lu 24:47; Ac 13:24; Ac 19:4)4Schon im Buch des Propheten Jesaja steht: »In der Wüste ruft einer: ›Macht den Weg bereit, auf dem der Herr kommt! Ebnet ihm die Straßen! (Isa 40:3)5Füllt alle Täler auf, tragt Berge und Hügel ab, beseitigt die Windungen und räumt die Hindernisse aus dem Weg!6Dann wird alle Welt sehen, wie Gott die Rettung bringt.‹«
Der Täufer fordert radikale Umkehr
7Die Menschen kamen in Scharen zu Johannes, um sich von ihm taufen zu lassen. Er hielt ihnen vor: »Ihr Schlangenbrut, wer hat euch gesagt, dass ihr dem bevorstehenden Gericht Gottes entgeht? (Mt 3:7; Lu 21:5)8Zeigt durch eure Taten, dass ihr es mit der Umkehr ernst meint! Ihr bildet euch ein, dass euch nichts geschehen kann, weil Abraham euer Stammvater ist. Aber das sage ich euch: Gott kann Abraham aus diesen Steinen hier neue Nachkommen schaffen! (Mt 3:9)9Die Axt ist auch schon angelegt, um die Bäume an der Wurzel abzuschlagen. Jeder Baum, der keine guten Früchte bringt, wird umgehauen und ins Feuer geworfen.« (Mt 7:19)10Die Menschen fragten Johannes: »Was sollen wir denn tun?«11Seine Antwort war: »Wer zwei Hemden hat, soll dem eins geben, der keines hat. Und wer etwas zu essen hat, soll es mit jemand teilen, der hungert.«12Auch Zolleinnehmer kamen und wollten sich taufen lassen; sie fragten ihn: »Lehrer, was sollen wir tun?«13Seine Antwort war: »Verlangt nicht mehr, als festgesetzt ist!«14Auch Soldaten fragten ihn: »Was sollen denn wir tun?« Die Antwort war: »Beraubt und erpresst niemand, sondern gebt euch mit eurem Sold zufrieden!«
Der Täufer weist auf Christus hin
15Das Volk war voll Erwartung und fragte sich, ob Johannes vielleicht der versprochene Retter[2] sei. (Mt 3:11; Mr 1:7; Joh 1:25)16Da erklärte er allen: »Ich taufe euch mit Wasser. Es kommt aber der, der mächtiger ist als ich. Ich bin nicht einmal gut genug, ihm die Schuhe aufzubinden. Er wird euch mit dem Heiligen Geist und mit dem Feuer des Gerichts taufen. (Ps 51:9; Ps 51:12; Lu 4:18; Ac 1:5; Ac 11:16; Ac 13:25; Ac 19:2)17Er hat die Worfschaufel in seiner Hand, um die Spreu vom Weizen zu scheiden und den Weizen in seine Scheune zu bringen. Die Spreu wird er in einem Feuer verbrennen, das nie mehr ausgeht.«18Mit diesen und vielen anderen Worten rüttelte Johannes das Volk auf und verkündete ihm die Gute Nachricht vom Kommen des versprochenen Retters.
Das Wirken des Täufers geht zu Ende
19Johannes tadelte auch den Fürsten Herodes, weil er Herodias, die Frau seines Bruders, geheiratet und auch sonst viel Unrecht getan hatte. (Mt 14:3; Mr 6:17)20Deswegen ließ Herodes ihn ins Gefängnis werfen und lud zu allem anderen auch noch diese Schuld auf sich.
Jesus lässt sich taufen
21Zusammen mit dem ganzen Volk hatte auch Jesus sich taufen lassen. Gleich darauf, während er betete, öffnete sich der Himmel. (Mt 3:13; Mt 3:16; Mr 1:9; Lu 5:16; Joh 1:32)22Der Heilige Geist kam sichtbar auf ihn herab, anzusehen wie eine Taube. Und eine Stimme sagte vom Himmel her: »Du bist mein Sohn, dir gilt meine Liebe, dich habe ich erwählt.« (Mt 3:17; Lu 4:18)
Jesus – Ziel und Erfüllung der Geschichte Israels und der Menschheit
23Als Jesus sein Werk begann, war er etwa dreißig Jahre alt. Er galt als Sohn Josefs. Josef war ein Sohn Elis; (Ge 41:46; 2Sa 5:4)24seine weiteren Vorfahren waren: Mattat, Levi, Melchi, Jannai, Josef,25Mattitja, Amos, Nahum, Hesli, Naggai,26Mahat, Mattitja, Schimi, Josech, Joda,27Johanan, Resa, Serubbabel, Schealtiël, Neri, (1Ch 3:17; Ezr 3:2)28Melchi, Addi, Kosam, Elmadam, Er,29Joschua, Eliëser, Jorim, Mattat, Levi,30Simeon, Juda, Josef, Jonam, Eljakim,31Melea, Menna, Mattata, Natan, David, (Ru 4:18; 2Sa 5:14; 1Ch 2:1)32Isai, Obed, Boas, Salmon, Nachschon,33Amminadab, Admin, Arni, Hezron, Perez, Juda, (Ge 5:1; Ge 11:10; Ge 25:19; Ge 29:35)34Jakob, Isaak, Abraham, Terach, Nahor,35Serug, Regu, Peleg, Eber, Schelach,36Kenan, Arpachschad, Sem, Noach, Lamech,37Metuschelach, Henoch, Jered, Mahalalel, Kenan,38Enosch, Set, Adam – und Adam stammte von Gott.[3]
