1At that time Herod, the ruler of Galilee and Perea, heard reports about Jesus.2He said to his attendants, ‘This is John the Baptist. He has risen from the dead! That is why he has the power to do miracles.’3Herod had arrested John. He had tied him up and put him in prison because of Herodias. She was the wife of Herod’s brother Philip.4John had been saying to Herod, ‘It is against the Law for you to have her as your wife.’5Herod wanted to kill John. But he was afraid of the people, because they thought John was a prophet.6On Herod’s birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for Herod and his guests. She pleased Herod very much.7So he promised to give her anything she asked for.8Her mother told her what to say. So the girl said to Herod, ‘Give me the head of John the Baptist on a big plate.’9The king was very upset. But he thought of his promise and his dinner guests. So he told one of his men to give her what she asked for.10Herod had John’s head cut off in the prison.11His head was brought in on a big plate and given to the girl. She then carried it to her mother.12John’s disciples came and took his body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus.
Jesus feeds five thousand
13Jesus heard what had happened to John. He wanted to be alone. So he went in a boat to a quiet place. The crowds heard about this. They followed him on foot from the towns.14When Jesus came ashore, he saw a large crowd. He felt deep concern for them. He healed their ill people.15When it was almost evening, the disciples came to him. ‘There is nothing here,’ they said. ‘It’s already getting late. Send the crowds away. They can go and buy some food in the villages.’16Jesus replied, ‘They don’t need to go away. You give them something to eat.’17‘We have only five loaves of bread and two fish,’ they answered.18‘Bring them here to me,’ he said.19Then Jesus instructed the people to sit down on the grass. He took the five loaves and the two fish. He looked up to heaven and gave thanks. He broke the loaves into pieces. Then he gave them to the disciples. And the disciples gave them to the people.20All of them ate and were satisfied. The disciples picked up 12 baskets of leftover pieces.21The number of men who ate was about 5,000. Women and children also ate.
Jesus walks on the water
22Right away Jesus made the disciples get into the boat. He had them go on ahead of him to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. Then he sent the crowd away.23After he had sent them away, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone.24The boat was already a long way from land. It was being pounded by the waves because the wind was blowing against it.25Shortly before dawn, Jesus went out to the disciples. He walked on the lake.26They saw him walking on the lake and were terrified. ‘It’s a ghost!’ they said. And they cried out in fear.27Right away Jesus called out to them, ‘Be brave! It is I. Don’t be afraid.’28‘Lord, is it you?’ Peter asked. ‘If it is, tell me to come to you on the water.’29‘Come’, Jesus said. So Peter got out of the boat. He walked on the water towards Jesus.30But when Peter saw the wind, he was afraid. He began to sink. He cried out, ‘Lord! Save me!’31Right away Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. ‘Your faith is so small!’ he said. ‘Why did you doubt me?’32When they climbed into the boat, the wind died down.33Then those in the boat worshipped Jesus. They said, ‘You really are the Son of God!’34They crossed over the lake and landed at Gennesaret.35The men who lived there recognised Jesus. So they sent a message all over the nearby countryside. People brought all those who were ill to Jesus.36They begged him to let those who were ill just touch the edge of his clothes. And all who touched his clothes were healed.

Vom Tod des Täufers Johannes
3Herodes hatte nämlich Johannes festnehmen und gefesselt ins Gefängnis werfen lassen. Der Grund dafür war: Herodes hatte seinem Bruder Philippus die Frau, Herodias, weggenommen und sie geheiratet. (Mr 6:17; Lu 3:19)4Johannes hatte ihm daraufhin vorgehalten: »Das Gesetz Gottes erlaubt dir nicht, sie zu heiraten.« (Ex 20:14; Le 18:16; Le 20:21)5Herodes hätte ihn deshalb gerne getötet; aber er hatte Angst vor dem Volk, das Johannes für einen Propheten hielt. (Mt 21:26; Joh 7:1)6Als nun Herodes Geburtstag hatte, tanzte die Tochter von Herodias vor den Gästen. Das gefiel Herodes so gut,7dass er einen Eid schwor und ihr versprach, ihr alles zu geben, was sie sich wünschte.8Auf Anraten ihrer Mutter sagte das Mädchen: »Gib mir hier auf einem Teller den Kopf des Täufers Johannes!«9Der König wurde traurig, aber weil er vor allen Gästen einen Schwur geleistet hatte, befahl er, ihr den Wunsch zu erfüllen.10Er schickte den Henker ins Gefängnis; der enthauptete Johannes.11Sein Kopf wurde auf einem Teller hergebracht und dem Mädchen überreicht. Das gab ihn weiter an seine Mutter.12Die Jünger von Johannes holten den Toten und begruben ihn. Danach gingen sie zu Jesus und berichteten ihm, was geschehen war.
Jesus macht mehr als fünftausend Menschen satt
13Als Jesus das hörte, ging er von dort weg und fuhr mit dem Boot an eine einsame Stelle. Aber die Leute in den umliegenden Orten erfuhren es und folgten ihm auf dem Landweg. (Mt 15:32; Mr 6:30; Lu 9:10; Joh 6:1)14Als Jesus aus dem Boot stieg, sah er eine große Menschenmenge vor sich. Da ergriff ihn das Mitleid und er heilte ihre Kranken. (Mr 8:2)15Darüber wurde es Abend. Seine Jünger kamen zu ihm und sagten: »Es ist schon spät und die Gegend hier ist einsam. Schick doch die Leute weg! Sie sollen in die Dörfer gehen und sich etwas zu essen kaufen!«16Jesus antwortete ihnen: »Warum sollen sie weggehen? Gebt doch ihr ihnen zu essen!«17Die Jünger hielten ihm entgegen: »Wir haben nur fünf Brote und zwei Fische hier.«18»Bringt sie mir her!«, sagte Jesus.19Er forderte die Leute auf, sich ins Gras zu setzen. Dann nahm er die fünf Brote und die zwei Fische, sah zum Himmel auf und sprach das Segensgebet darüber. Er brach die Brote in Stücke und gab sie den Jüngern, und die verteilten sie an die Menge.20Alle aßen und wurden satt, und sie füllten sogar noch zwölf Körbe mit dem Brot, das übrig blieb.21Etwa fünftausend Männer hatten an der Mahlzeit teilgenommen, dazu noch Frauen und Kinder.
Jesus geht auf dem Wasser
22Gleich darauf drängte Jesus die Jünger, ins Boot zu steigen und ans andere Seeufer vorauszufahren. Er selbst wollte erst noch die Menschenmenge verabschieden. (Mr 6:45; Joh 6:15)23Als er damit fertig war, stieg er allein auf einen Berg,[2] um zu beten. Als es dunkel wurde, war er immer noch dort. (Mt 5:1; Lu 5:16)24Das Boot mit den Jüngern war inzwischen weit draußen auf dem See. Der Wind trieb ihnen die Wellen entgegen und machte ihnen schwer zu schaffen.25Im letzten Viertel der Nacht kam Jesus auf dem Wasser zu ihnen. (Job 9:8)26Als die Jünger ihn auf dem Wasser gehen sahen, erschraken sie und sagten: »Ein Gespenst!«, und schrien vor Angst. (Lu 24:37)27Sofort sprach Jesus sie an: »Fasst Mut! Ich bin’s,[3] fürchtet euch nicht!«28Da sagte Petrus: »Herr, wenn du es bist, dann befiehl mir, auf dem Wasser zu dir zu kommen!«29»Komm!«, sagte Jesus. Petrus stieg aus dem Boot, ging über das Wasser und kam zu Jesus.30Als er dann aber die hohen Wellen sah, bekam er Angst. Er begann zu sinken und schrie: »Hilf mir, Herr!«31Sofort streckte Jesus seine Hand aus, fasste Petrus und sagte: »Du hast zu wenig Vertrauen! Warum hast du gezweifelt?« (Mt 6:30; Mt 8:26; Mt 16:8; Mt 17:20)32Dann stiegen beide ins Boot, und der Wind legte sich.33Die Jünger im Boot warfen sich vor Jesus nieder und riefen: »Du bist wirklich Gottes Sohn!« (Mt 16:16; Mt 27:54; Mr 15:39; Joh 1:34)
Jesus heilt Kranke in Gennesaret
34Sie überquerten den See und landeten bei Gennesaret. (Mr 6:53)35Die Bewohner des Ortes erkannten Jesus und verbreiteten die Nachricht von seiner Ankunft in der ganzen Umgebung. Daraufhin brachte man alle Kranken zu ihm36und bat ihn, ob sie nicht wenigstens eine Quaste seines Gewandes berühren dürften. Und alle, die es taten, wurden gesund. (Mt 9:20)
