Die Israeliten bereiten sich auf die Begegnung mit Gott vor
1Genau zwei Monate nach ihrem Auszug aus Ägypten[1] erreichten die Israeliten die Wüste Sinai.2Sie waren von Refidim aufgebrochen und schlugen nun in der Wüste, am Fuß des Berges ´Sinai`, ihr Lager auf.3Mose stieg ´den Berg` hinauf zu Gott. Da rief der HERR vom Berg herab: »Richte den Israeliten, den Nachkommen Jakobs, folgende Botschaft aus:[2]4›Ihr habt selbst gesehen, was ich den Ägyptern angetan habe. Euch dagegen habe ich auf Flügeln getragen wie ein Adler ´seine Jungen` und euch ´wohlbehalten` hierher zu mir gebracht.5Jetzt sollt ihr wissen: Wenn ihr meine Worte sorgsam beachtet und euch an die Bestimmungen des Bundes haltet, den ich mit euch schließen werde[3], dann werdet ihr mein besonderes Eigentum sein. Solch eine Stellung hat kein anderes Volk.[4] Mir gehört zwar die ganze Welt,6aber ihr sollt für mich ein Königreich von Priestern sein, ein Volk, das mir geweiht ist.‹ Diese Worte sollst du den Israeliten übermitteln.«7Als Mose zurückkam, rief er die führenden Männer des Volkes zusammen und berichtete ihnen alles, was der HERR ihm aufgetragen hatte.8Das ganze Volk antwortete einmütig: »Alles, was der HERR gesagt hat, wollen wir tun!« Mose überbrachte dem HERRN die Antwort des Volkes.9Da sagte der HERR zu Mose: »Ich werde in einer dichten Wolke zu dir kommen. So kann das Volk hören, wie ich mit dir rede, damit es dir für alle Zeit Glauben schenkt.« Als Mose dem HERRN die Antwort des Volkes überbrachte,10sagte der HERR ´außerdem` zu ihm: »Geh zum Volk und sorge dafür, dass sie sich heute und morgen auf die Begegnung mit mir vorbereiten: Sie sollen sich reinigen[5] und ihre Kleider waschen,11damit sie übermorgen[6] bereit sind. Denn an diesem Tag werde ´ich`, der HERR, vor aller Augen auf den Berg Sinai herabkommen.12Darum ziehe eine Grenze ´um den Berg` und warne das Volk: ›Hütet euch davor, den Berg zu besteigen oder seine Ausläufer zu betreten. Wer dies tut, muss sterben!13Jeder, der den Berg berührt, muss gesteinigt oder mit Speeren und Pfeilen erschossen werden.[7] Er darf nicht am Leben bleiben. Das gilt für Menschen und Tiere. Erst wenn das Widderhorn langanhaltend ertönt, dürfen diejenigen, die ich dazu bestimme[8], auf den Berg steigen.‹«14Mose stieg vom Berg herab ´und kam` zum Volk ´zurück`. Er befahl ihnen, sich zu reinigen und auf die Begegnung mit Gott vorzubereiten[9], und ließ sie ihre Kleider waschen.15Er sagte ihnen: »Macht euch für übermorgen[10] bereit! Bis dahin dürft ihr keinen Geschlechtsverkehr haben.«
Gott kommt auf den Berg Sinai herab
16Am übernächsten Morgen[11] begann es zu donnern und zu blitzen. Eine dichte Wolke hüllte den Berggipfel ein, und das laute Signal eines Widderhorns ertönte. Die Leute im Lager zitterten ´vor Angst`.17Mose führte das Volk aus dem Lager hinaus, damit sie Gott begegnen konnten. Am Fuß des Berges stellten sie sich auf.18Der Sinai war ganz in Rauch gehüllt, während der HERR umgeben von Feuer auf ihn herabkam. Rauchsäulen stiegen auf wie von einem Schmelzofen, der ganze Berg bebte heftig,19und der Schall des Widderhorns wurde immer lauter. Mose sprach ´mit Gott`, und Gott antwortete ihm mit lauter Stimme[12].20So kam der HERR auf den Gipfel des Berges Sinai herab. Er rief Mose zu sich auf den Gipfel, und Mose stieg hinauf.21Doch dann befahl ihm der HERR: »Geh wieder hinunter und warne das Volk. Sie dürfen auf keinen Fall ´die Abgrenzung` durchbrechen, um ´mich`, den HERRN, zu sehen, sonst werden viele von ihnen sterben.22Selbst die Priester, die sich mir regelmäßig ´zum Opferdienst` nähern, müssen sich reinigen und auf die Begegnung mit mir vorbereiten[13], damit ich in ihre Reihen keine Lücke reiße[14].«23Mose antwortete dem HERRN: »Das Volk kann ja gar nicht auf den Berg steigen, denn du selbst hast uns schließlich gewarnt und befohlen, eine Grenze um den Berg zu ziehen und ihn zu einem heiligen Ort zu erklären.«24Doch der HERR erwiderte: »Steig trotzdem hinab und komm zusammen mit Aaron wieder herauf! Weder die Priester noch das Volk dürfen die Grenze überschreiten und zu ´mir`, dem HERRN, hinaufsteigen, damit ich in ihre Reihen keine Lücke reiße.«25So ging Mose wieder hinunter zum Volk und richtete ihnen aus, ´was Gott gesagt hatte`.

Wenn aber das Horn anhaltend ertönt, dann sollen sie zum Berg kommen! (2Mo 19,16)14Da stieg Mose vom Berg herab zum Volk und heiligte das Volk; und sie wuschen ihre Kleider. Die Erscheinung des Herrn auf dem Sinai
16Und es geschah, als der dritte Tag kam und es noch früh am Morgen war, da erhob sich ein Donnern und Blitzen, und eine dichte Wolke lag auf dem Berg, und [es ertönte] ein sehr lauter Schall von Schopharhörnern[1]. Da erschrak das ganze Volk, das im Lager war. (2Mo 19,13; 2Mo 19,19; Ps 47,6; Mt 24,31; 1Kor 15,52; 1Thess 4,16; Offb 1,10; Offb 4,1)17Und Mose führte das Volk aus dem Lager, Gott entgegen, und sie stellten sich unten am Berg auf. (5Mo 4,11)18Aber der ganze Berg Sinai rauchte, weil der HERR im Feuer auf ihn herabstieg. Und sein Rauch stieg auf wie der Rauch eines Schmelzofens, und der ganze Berg erbebte heftig. (5Mo 33,2; Ri 5,4; Neh 9,13; Ps 68,8; Ps 144,5; Hab 3,6)19Und der Hörnerschall wurde immer stärker. Mose redete, und Gott antwortete ihm mit lauter Stimme. (4Mo 12,7; Ps 29,3; Apg 7,38)20Als nun der HERR auf den Berg Sinai, oben auf den Gipfel des Berges herabgekommen war, rief er Mose hinauf auf den Gipfel des Berges. Und Mose stieg hinauf. (2Mo 24,12; 5Mo 5,22; Ps 27,8)21Da sprach der HERR zu Mose: Steige hinab und ermahne das Volk, dass sie nicht zum HERRN durchbrechen, um zu schauen, und viele von ihnen fallen! (2Mo 3,5; 2Mo 33,20; 1Sam 6,19)22Auch die Priester, die dem HERRN nahen, sollen sich heiligen, dass der HERR nicht einen Riss unter ihnen macht! (3Mo 10,2; 1Chr 15,14; 2Chr 5,11; 2Chr 29,5)23Mose aber sprach zum HERRN: Das Volk kann nicht auf den Berg Sinai steigen, denn du hast uns bezeugt und gesagt: Ziehe eine Grenze um den Berg und heilige ihn! (2Mo 19,12)24Der HERR sprach zu ihm: Geh hin, steige hinab! Danach sollst du hinaufsteigen und Aaron mit dir; aber die Priester und das Volk sollen nicht durchbrechen, um zum HERRN hinaufzusteigen, damit er nicht einen Riss unter ihnen macht! (2Mo 19,20)25Und Mose stieg zum Volk hinunter und sagte es ihnen.

Although the whole earth is mine,6you[1] will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.” These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.’7So Moses went back and summoned the elders of the people and set before them all the words the Lord had commanded him to speak.8The people all responded together, ‘We will do everything the Lord has said.’ So Moses brought their answer back to the Lord.9The Lord said to Moses, ‘I am going to come to you in a dense cloud, so that the people will hear me speaking with you and will always put their trust in you.’ Then Moses told the Lord what the people had said.10And the Lord said to Moses, ‘Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow. Make them wash their clothes11and be ready by the third day, because on that day the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people.12Put limits for the people around the mountain and tell them, “Be careful that you do not approach the mountain or touch the foot of it. Whoever touches the mountain is to be put to death.13They are to be stoned or shot with arrows; not a hand is to be laid on them. No person or animal shall be permitted to live.” Only when the ram’s horn sounds a long blast may they approach the mountain.’14After Moses had gone down the mountain to the people, he consecrated them, and they washed their clothes.15Then he said to the people, ‘Prepare yourselves for the third day. Abstain from sexual relations.’16On the morning of the third day there was thunder and lightning, with a thick cloud over the mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast. Everyone in the camp trembled.17Then Moses led the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain.18Mount Sinai was covered with smoke, because the Lord descended on it in fire. The smoke billowed up from it like smoke from a furnace, and the whole mountain[2] trembled violently.19As the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke and the voice of God answered him.[3]20The Lord descended to the top of Mount Sinai and called Moses to the top of the mountain. So Moses went up21and the Lord said to him, ‘Go down and warn the people so they do not force their way through to see the Lord and many of them perish.22Even the priests, who approach the Lord, must consecrate themselves, or the Lord will break out against them.’23Moses said to the Lord, ‘The people cannot come up Mount Sinai, because you yourself warned us, “Put limits around the mountain and set it apart as holy.” ’24The Lord replied, ‘Go down and bring Aaron up with you. But the priests and the people must not force their way through to come up to the Lord, or he will break out against them.’25So Moses went down to the people and told them.
