Desastre causado por la idolatría

1 Este es el mensaje que Jeremías recibió del SEÑOR respecto a todos los israelitas que vivían en el norte de Egipto en las ciudades de Migdol, Tafnes y Menfis, y por todo el sur de Egipto también. 2-3 El SEÑOR de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel, dice: Ustedes vieron lo que les hice a Jerusalén y a todas las ciudades de Judá. Como consecuencia de sus actos de maldad yacen ahora en ruinas y cenizas, sin persona viva. Pues mi cólera se descargó contra ellas porque adoraron a otros dioses, «dioses» que ni ellos ni ustedes ni ninguno de sus antepasados conoció jamás. 4 Una y otra vez envié a mis siervos los profetas a protestar y a suplicarles que no cometieran este horrible acto que yo detesto, 5 pero no quisieron oír ni abandonar sus malas acciones, sino que han continuado rindiéndole honores a esos«dioses». 6 Así es que hicieron hervir mi cólera y mi furia, las que solté contra ustedes y las ciudades de Judá y las calles de Jerusalén como si fueran fuego, de modo que por eso allí hay desolación hasta el día de hoy. 7 Y ahora el SEÑOR, el Dios de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel, les pregunta: ¿Por qué se dañan tanto a sí mismos? ¡Porque si siguen obrando tan mal ninguno de ustedes vivirá: ni un solo hombre, mujer, niño o niña entre los que han venido acá desde Judá, ni siquiera los niños de brazos! 8 Porque están provocando mi cólera con los ídolos que han hecho y adorado allí en Egipto, ofreciéndoles agradables perfumes y provocándome a que los aniquile y los convierta en maldición y motivo de burla de todas las naciones de la tierra. 9 ¿Han olvidado las malas acciones que cometieron sus antepasados, y las maldades de los reyes y las reinas de Judá, y los suyos propios, y las de sus esposas en Judá y Jerusalén? 10 Y hasta la hora presente no han presentado excusa; nadie ha querido volverse a mí, o seguir las instrucciones que di a ustedes y a sus antepasados. 11 Por lo tanto el SEÑOR de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel, dice: ¡Mi atención está puesta en ustedes y estoy planeando la manera de castigarlos! 12 ¡Tomaré a este remanente de Judá que insistió en venir acá a Egipto y los consumiré como hace el fuego! ¡Caerán aquí en Egipto, muertos por el hambre y las heridas de las espadas; todos morirán, desde el más pequeño al más grande! Serán despreciados y odiados, maldecidos y detestados. 13 Los castigaré en Egipto como los castigué en Jerusalén, mediante las heridas de las espadas, el hambre y la enfermedad. 14 Ni uno de ellos escapará a mi cólera excepto los que se arrepientan de haber venido y huyan de los demás para volver a su propio país. 15 Entonces todas las mujeres que estaban presentes y los hombres que sabían que sus esposas habían ofrecido agradables perfumes en honor a los ídolos (era una gran multitud de todos los judíos en el sur de Egipto) respondieron a Jeremías: 16 «¡No vamos a escuchar los falsos mensajes que dices de parte del SEÑOR! 17 Haremos lo que se nos antoje. Ofreceremos perfumes agradables en honor a la Reina del Cielo y le sacrificaremos cuanto nos plazca, igual que lo hicimos nosotros y nuestros antepasados, y nuestros reyes y príncipes en las ciudades de Judá y en las calles de Jerusalén; porque en aquellos días teníamos abundancia de alimentos y estábamos bien acomodados y felices. 18 Pero desde que dejamos de ofrecer perfumes agradables en honor a la Reina del Cielo y dejamos de rendirle homenaje, hemos estado en gran tribulación y hemos sido destruidos por las heridas de espada y el hambre. 19 »Además —añadieron las mujeres—, ¿piensas que le rendíamos homenaje a la Reina del Cielo y le derramábamos bebidas en señal de reconocimiento y le hacíamos tortas en que grabábamos su imagen, sin que nuestros maridos lo supieran y nos ayudaran? ¡Claro que no!». 20 Entonces Jeremías les dijo a todos, a los hombres y las mujeres que le habían dado esa respuesta: 21 ¿Piensan acaso que el SEÑOR no sabía que ustedes, sus antepasados, sus reyes y príncipes y todo el pueblo ofrecían perfumes agradables a los ídolos en las ciudades de Judá y en las calles de Jerusalén? 22 Fue por no poder soportar más todas las maldades que cometían que él desoló su tierra, convirtiéndola en increíble ruina, reseca, despoblada, tal como está hoy. 23 Precisamente la razón por la cual les han acontecido todas estas terribles cosas es que han ofrecido perfume agradable en homenaje a los ídolos y así han ofendido al SEÑOR, y se han negado a seguir sus instrucciones. 24 Luego Jeremías les dijo a todo el pueblo, hombres y mujeres: ¡Escuchen el consejo del SEÑOR, ustedes todos ciudadanos de Judá que están en Egipto! 25 El SEÑOR de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel, dice: Tanto ustedes como sus esposas han dicho que jamás renunciarán a su devoción y práctica de rendir homenaje a la«Reina del Cielo» y así lo han demostrado con sus actos. ¡Pues adelante; cumplan las promesas y votos que le han hecho! 26 Pero escuchen el mensaje del SEÑOR, todos ustedes, judíos que viven en tierra de Egipto: Por mi gran fama he jurado, dice el SEÑOR, que de nada les servirá ya buscar mi auxilio y bendición, diciendo: «¡Oh SEÑOR Dios nuestro, ayúdanos!». 27 Porque sobre ustedes pondré mi atención, ¡pero no para bien! ¡Yo me encargaré de que les sobrevengan males, y serán destruidos por la guerra y el hambre hasta que todos perezcan! 28 Únicamente los que vuelvan a Judá (será sólo un pequeño grupo de sobrevivientes) escaparán a mi cólera, pero todos los que se nieguen a regresar —quienes insistan en vivir en Egipto— descubrirán quién dice la verdad, si yo o ellos. 29 Y esta es la prueba que les doy de que todas mis amenazas se cumplirán en ustedes, y de que los castigaré aquí: 30 Entregaré al faraón Hofra, rey de Egipto, en manos de quienes procuran matarlo, así como entregué a Sedequías, rey de Judá, en manos de Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia.

2 “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: You have seen all the disaster that I brought upon Jerusalem and upon all the cities of Judah. Behold, this day they are a desolation, and no one dwells in them, (Jer 44:6) 3 because of the evil that they committed, provoking me to anger, in that they went to make offerings and serve other gods that they knew not, neither they, nor you, nor your fathers. 8 Why do you provoke me to anger with the works of your hands, making offerings to other gods in the land of Egypt where you have come to live, so that you may be cut off and become a curse and a taunt among all the nations of the earth? 10 They have not humbled themselves even to this day, nor have they feared, nor walked in my law and my statutes that I set before you and before your fathers. (Pr 28:14) 11 “Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will set my face against you for harm, to cut off all Judah. 13 I will punish those who dwell in the land of Egypt, as I have punished Jerusalem, with the sword, with famine, and with pestilence, (Jer 43:11) 14 so that none of the remnant of Judah who have come to live in the land of Egypt shall escape or survive or return to the land of Judah, to which they desire to return to dwell there. 23 It is because you made offerings and because you sinned against the Lord and did not obey the voice of the Lord or walk in his law and in his statutes and in his testimonies that this disaster has happened to you, as at this day.” (Dt 31:29; Jer 40:3) 24 Jeremiah said to all the people and all the women, “Hear the word of the Lord, all you of Judah who are in the land of Egypt. 27 Behold, I am watching over them for disaster and not for good. All the men of Judah who are in the land of Egypt shall be consumed by the sword and by famine, until there is an end of them.
