1 Cuando Jeremías terminó de dar este recado de parte del SEÑOR a todo el pueblo, 2-3 Azarías, hijo de Osaías, y Johanán, hijo de Carea, y todos los otros hombres orgullosos le dijeron a Jeremías: ―¡Mientes! ¡El SEÑOR nuestro Dios no te ha mandado que nos digas que no vayamos a Egipto! Baruc, hijo de Nerías, te ha puesto contra nosotros y te ha dicho que nos digas esto para que nos quedemos acá y seamos muertos por los babilonios o llevados cautivos a Babilonia. 4 De modo que Johanán y todos los jefes guerrilleros y todo el pueblo se negaron a obedecer al SEÑOR y quedarse en Judá. 5 Todos, inclusive cuantos habían regresado de las regiones aledañas a donde habían huido, emprendieron el viaje a Egipto al mando de Johanán y los demás capitanes. 6 Entre la multitud había hombres, mujeres, niños y niñas, las hijas del rey y todos aquellos a quienes Nabuzaradán, el capitán de la guardia, había dejado con Guedalías. Hasta obligaron a Jeremías y a Baruc a ir con ellos. 7 Así es que llegaron a Egipto, a la ciudad de Tafnes, pues no quisieron seguir la recomendación del SEÑOR. 8 Entonces en Tafnes, el SEÑOR habló a Jeremías otra vez y le dijo: 9 Reúne a gente de Judá y, mientras te observan, entierra piedras grandes en medio de las baldosas a la entrada del palacio del faraón aquí en Tafnes, 10 y diles esto a la gente de Judá: El SEÑOR de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel, dice: No tengan la menor duda de que traeré a Egipto a Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, pues él es mi siervo. Pondré su trono sobre estas piedras que he escondido; sobre ellas extenderá su pabellón. 11 Y cuando venga, destruirá la tierra de Egipto, matando a cuantos yo quiera que mate, y capturando a los que yo quiera que capture, y muchos morirán a consecuencia de la peste. 12 Incendiará los templos de los dioses de Egipto, quemará los ídolos y se llevará cautivo al pueblo. Y saqueará la tierra de Egipto, como pastor que saca pulgas de su capa; pero él saldrá ileso. 13 Y quebrantará los obeliscos que se levantan en la ciudad de Bet Semes, y quemará los templos de los dioses de Egipto.

Jeremiah Taken to Egypt

1 When Jeremiah finished speaking to all the people all these words of the Lord their God, with which the Lord their God had sent him to them, 2 Azariah the son of Hoshaiah and Johanan the son of Kareah and all the insolent men said to Jeremiah, “You are telling a lie. The Lord our God did not send you to say, ‘Do not go to Egypt to live there,’ (Sal 86:14; Is 13:11; Jer 40:8; Jer 42:1; Jer 42:19; Mal 4:1)

3 but Baruch the son of Neriah has set you against us, to deliver us into the hand of the Chaldeans, that they may kill us or take us into exile in Babylon.” (Jer 32:12; Jer 37:13; Jer 38:22) 4 So Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces and all the people did not obey the voice of the Lord, to remain in the land of Judah. (Jer 40:13; Jer 43:2) 5 But Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces took all the remnant of Judah who had returned to live in the land of Judah from all the nations to which they had been driven— (Jer 40:11) 6 the men, the women, the children, the princesses, and every person whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan; also Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch the son of Neriah. 7 And they came into the land of Egypt, for they did not obey the voice of the Lord. And they arrived at Tahpanhes. (Is 30:4; Jer 2:16; Jer 44:1; Jer 46:14)

8 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah in Tahpanhes: (Jer 43:7) 9 “Take in your hands large stones and hide them in the mortar in the pavement that is at the entrance to Pharaoh’s palace in Tahpanhes, in the sight of the men of Judah, (Jer 43:7) 10 and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will send and take Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and I will set his throne above these stones that I have hidden, and he will spread his royal canopy over them. (Jer 1:15; Jer 25:9) 11 He shall come and strike the land of Egypt, giving over to the pestilence those who are doomed to the pestilence, to captivity those who are doomed to captivity, and to the sword those who are doomed to the sword. (Jer 15:2; Jer 44:13; Jer 46:13) 12 I shall kindle a fire in the temples of the gods of Egypt, and he shall burn them and carry them away captive. And he shall clean the land of Egypt as a shepherd cleans his cloak of vermin, and he shall go away from there in peace. 13 He shall break the obelisks of Heliopolis, which is in the land of Egypt, and the temples of the gods of Egypt he shall burn with fire.’” (Ex 23:24; Jer 43:12)
