El rey Joacim quema el rollo de Jeremías

1 El cuarto año del reinado del rey Joacim de Judá, hijo de Josías, el SEÑOR dio a Jeremías este mensaje: 2 Toma un rollo y escribe todos mis mensajes contra Israel, Judá y las demás naciones. Comienza con el primer mensaje desde los días de Josías, y escribe luego cada uno de los demás. 3 Quizá cuando el pueblo de Judá vea por escrito todas las terribles cosas que voy a hacerles, se arrepientan, y entonces podré perdonarlos. 4 Entonces Jeremías envió a llamar a Baruc, hijo de Nerías, y conforme Jeremías dictaba, Baruc escribía todas las profecías. 5 Cuando todo estuvo terminado, Jeremías le dijo a Baruc: ―Ya que estoy preso aquí, 6 lee tú el rollo en el templo el próximo día de Ayuno, porque ese día habrá allí gente de todo Judá. 7 Quizá todavía se vuelvan de sus malas conductas y le pidan al SEÑOR perdón antes que sea demasiado tarde, aunque ya se les hayan echado estas predicciones de castigo de Dios. 8 Baruc hizo como Jeremías le ordenaba, y leyó todos estos mensajes del SEÑOR al pueblo en el templo, tal como Jeremías le había pedido. 9 Esto ocurrió el día de Ayuno que se celebró en diciembre del quinto año del reinado del rey Joacim, hijo de Josías. Y llegó gente de todo Judá para asistir a los servicios del templo aquel día. 10 Baruc fue a la oficina de Guemarías el escriba, hijo de Safán, para leer el rollo. (Este cuarto quedaba al lado del salón de asambleas que el templo tenía arriba, cerca de la entrada de la Puerta Nueva). 11 Cuando Micaías, hijo de Guemarías, hijo de Safán, oyó los mensajes del SEÑOR, 12 bajó al palacio, al salón de conferencias en donde estaban reunidos los encargados de la administración. Elisama (el escriba) estaba allí, así como Delaías, hijo de Semaías, Elnatán, hijo de Acbor, Guemarías, hijo de Safán, Sedequías, hijo de Ananías, y todos los demás que tenían cargos administrativos semejantes. 13 Cuando Micaías les contó acerca de los mensajes que Baruc estaba leyéndole al pueblo, 14-15 los dignatarios enviaron a Yehudi, hijo de Netanías, hijo de Selemías, hijo de Cusí, a pedirle a Baruc que viniera a leerles a ellos también los mensajes, y Baruc lo hizo. 16 Cuando terminó, estaban llenos de temor. ―Tenemos que contárselo al rey —dijeron—. 17 Pero primero, dinos cómo obtuviste estos mensajes. 18 Entonces Baruc les explicó que Jeremías se los había dictado palabra por palabra, y él los había escrito con tinta en el rollo. 19 ―Escóndanse tú y Jeremías —le dijeron los dignatarios a Baruc—. ¡No le digan a nadie dónde están! 20 Luego los dignatarios ocultaron el rollo en el cuarto de Elisama el escriba y fueron a hablarle al rey. 21 El rey envió a Yehudi que trajera el rollo. Yehudi lo trajo del cuarto de Elisama el escriba y se lo leyó al rey mientras todos los dignatarios se mantenían de pie. 22 El rey estaba por entonces en un aposento de invierno en el palacio, sentado al frente de un gran brasero con fuego, porque era diciembre y hacía frío. 23 Y cada vez que Yehudi terminaba de leer tres o cuatro columnas, el rey tomaba su cuchillo, cortaba la sección del rollo y la arrojaba al fuego, hasta que se consumió todo el rollo. 24-25 Y nadie protestó, sino Elnatán, Delaías y Guemarías. Suplicaron al rey que no quemara el rollo, pero no les hizo caso. Ninguno de los otros dignatarios del rey dio señales de temor o ira por lo que había hecho. 26 Entonces el rey ordenó a Jeramel, su hijo, a Seraías, hijo de Azriel, y a Selemías, hijo de Abdel, que detuvieran a Baruc y a Jeremías. Pero el SEÑOR los ocultó. 27 Después que el rey quemó el rollo, el SEÑOR le dijo a Jeremías: 28 Consigue otro rollo y escribe todo de nuevo igual que hiciste primero, 29 y dile esto al rey: El SEÑOR dice: Tú quemaste el rollo porque decía que el rey de Babilonia destruiría esta tierra y cuanto en ella hay. 30 Y ahora el SEÑOR añade esto respecto a ti, Joacim, rey de Judá: Este no tendrá un heredero que ocupe el trono de David. Su cadáver será dejado sin sepultar a la intemperie, expuesto al ardiente sol y a las heladas noches, 31 y yo lo castigaré a él y a su familia, así como a sus oficiales, por causa de sus malvadas acciones. Haré que sufran todo el mal que he anunciado; sobre ellos y sobre todo el pueblo de Judá y Jerusalén, porque no quisieron escuchar mis advertencias. 32 Entonces Jeremías tomó otro rollo y volvió a dictarle a Baruc todo lo que había escrito antes, sólo que esta vez el SEÑOR añadió mucho más.

Jehoiakim Burns Jeremiah’s Scroll

1 In the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord: (Jer 25:1; Jer 36:9; Jer 45:1) 2 “Take a scroll and write on it all the words that I have spoken to you against Israel and Judah and all the nations, from the day I spoke to you, from the days of Josiah until today. 4 Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah, and Baruch wrote on a scroll at the dictation of Jeremiah all the words of the Lord that he had spoken to him. (Jer 32:12; Jer 36:2) 5 And Jeremiah ordered Baruch, saying, “I am banned from going to the house of the Lord, (Jer 32:2; Jer 33:1; Jer 36:4; Jer 39:15)

6 so you are to go, and on a day of fasting in the hearing of all the people in the Lord’s house you shall read the words of the Lord from the scroll that you have written at my dictation. You shall read them also in the hearing of all the men of Judah who come out of their cities. (Jer 36:9) 7 It may be that their plea for mercy will come before the Lord, and that every one will turn from his evil way, for great is the anger and wrath that the Lord has pronounced against this people.” (Jer 36:3) 8 And Baruch the son of Neriah did all that Jeremiah the prophet ordered him about reading from the scroll the words of the Lord in the Lord’s house. 9 In the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the ninth month, all the people in Jerusalem and all the people who came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem proclaimed a fast before the Lord. 12 he went down to the king’s house, into the secretary’s chamber, and all the officials were sitting there: Elishama the secretary, Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, Elnathan the son of Achbor, Gemariah the son of Shaphan, Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the officials. 13 And Micaiah told them all the words that he had heard, when Baruch read the scroll in the hearing of the people. 14 Then all the officials sent Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, son of Shelemiah, son of Cushi, to say to Baruch, “Take in your hand the scroll that you read in the hearing of the people, and come.” So Baruch the son of Neriah took the scroll in his hand and came to them. 15 And they said to him, “Sit down and read it.” So Baruch read it to them. 16 When they heard all the words, they turned one to another in fear. And they said to Baruch, “We must report all these words to the king.” (Jer 36:20) 17 Then they asked Baruch, “Tell us, please, how did you write all these words? Was it at his dictation?” 18 Baruch answered them, “He dictated all these words to me, while I wrote them with ink on the scroll.” (Jer 36:32; Ro 16:22) 19 Then the officials said to Baruch, “Go and hide, you and Jeremiah, and let no one know where you are.” 20 So they went into the court to the king, having put the scroll in the chamber of Elishama the secretary, and they reported all the words to the king. (Jer 36:12) 21 Then the king sent Jehudi to get the scroll, and he took it from the chamber of Elishama the secretary. And Jehudi read it to the king and all the officials who stood beside the king. 22 It was the ninth month, and the king was sitting in the winter house, and there was a fire burning in the fire pot before him. (Jer 36:9; Am 3:15; Jn 10:22) 23 As Jehudi read three or four columns, the king would cut them off with a knife and throw them into the fire in the fire pot, until the entire scroll was consumed in the fire that was in the fire pot. 24 Yet neither the king nor any of his servants who heard all these words was afraid, nor did they tear their garments. (Jos 7:6; Jer 36:16) 25 Even when Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah urged the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them. (Is 59:16; Jer 36:12) 26 And the king commanded Jerahmeel the king’s son and Seraiah the son of Azriel and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel to seize Baruch the secretary and Jeremiah the prophet, but the Lord hid them. 27 Now after the king had burned the scroll with the words that Baruch wrote at Jeremiah’s dictation, the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 28 “Take another scroll and write on it all the former words that were in the first scroll, which Jehoiakim the king of Judah has burned. 29 And concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah you shall say, ‘Thus says the Lord, You have burned this scroll, saying, “Why have you written in it that the king of Babylon will certainly come and destroy this land, and will cut off from it man and beast?” (Jer 26:9) 30 Therefore thus says the Lord concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah: He shall have none to sit on the throne of David, and his dead body shall be cast out to the heat by day and the frost by night. 31 And I will punish him and his offspring and his servants for their iniquity. I will bring upon them and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem and upon the people of Judah all the disaster that I have pronounced against them, but they would not hear.’” (Jer 1:16) 32 Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah, who wrote on it at the dictation of Jeremiah all the words of the scroll that Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire. And many similar words were added to them. (Jer 36:4; Jer 36:18)
