Parábola del alfarero

1 Otro mensaje que Jeremías recibió del SEÑOR: 2 ¡Baja al taller donde hacen ollas y tinajas, que allí te comunicaré mi mensaje! 3 Hice como el SEÑOR me pidió, y encontré al alfarero trabajando en su torno. 4 Pero la tinaja que estaba haciendo no le salió como quería; entonces la redujo a una bola de arcilla y de nuevo comenzó a darle forma. 5 Entonces el SEÑOR dijo: 6 Oh Israel, ¿acaso no puedo yo hacer contigo lo que este alfarero hace con su arcilla? Como la arcilla en las manos del alfarero, así estás tú en mis manos. 7 Siempre que anuncie yo que una nación ha de ser tomada y destruida, 8 si esa nación se aparta de su mala conducta, no la destruiré según había planeado. 9 Y si anuncio que determinada nación será fortalecida y engrandecida, 10 pero ella cambia de actitud, empieza a cometer maldades y rehúsa obedecerme, también yo cambiaré de actitud y no bendeciré a esa nación como lo había dicho. 11 Ve por tanto y adviértele a todo Judá y Jerusalén diciendo: Oigan la palabra del SEÑOR: Estoy planeando hacerles mucho mal en vez de otorgarles beneficios; apártense de su mala conducta y hagan lo bueno. 12 Pero ellos replicaron: «No pierdas tu tiempo. No tenemos ninguna intención de hacer lo que Dios dice. Seguiremos viviendo como nos dé la gana, libres de todo lo que nos frene, así nos sentimos bien». 13 Luego el SEÑOR dijo: ¡Ni entre los paganos se oyó jamás cosa tal! Mi pueblo ha hecho algo tan espantoso que no se entiende. 14 En lo alto del Líbano jamás se derrite la nieve. Las frías corrientes que manan de las grietas del monte Hermón jamás se secan. 15 En eso se puede confiar porque pasa con regularidad, pero no en mi pueblo. Porque me han abandonado y puesto su confianza en ídolos que no sirven para nada. Se han alejado de una vida honesta y ahora viven dedicados a cometer toda clase de delitos. 16 Por lo tanto su tierra será desolada, de modo que cuantos pasen por allí abrirán la boca y moverán la cabeza asombrados al ver tanta destrucción. 17 Esparciré a mi pueblo ante sus enemigos como el viento del este esparce el polvo. Y cuando estén atribulados les volveré la espalda y rehusaré poner atención a su desesperación. 18 Entonces el pueblo dijo: «Vamos, librémonos de Jeremías. Nosotros tenemos sacerdotes, sabios y profetas, no necesitamos su consejo. Acallémoslo para que no hable más contra nosotros ni nos vuelva a molestar». 19 ¡Oh SEÑOR, ayúdame! ¡Mira lo que traman contra mí! 20 ¿Habrán de pagarme mal por bien? Han armado una emboscada para matarme, por más que yo te haya hablado bien de ellos y haya procurado defenderlos de tu cólera. 21 Ahora, SEÑOR, ¡mi deseo es que mueran de hambre sus hijos y les caigan encima guerras terribles! ¡Que queden viudas sus mujeres y pierdan todos sus hijos! ¡Que mueran sus hombres por la peste y sus muchachos en la batalla! 22 Deseo que se escuche en todas sus casas llanto amargo mientras súbitamente son asaltadas por los soldados, pues cavaron un hoyo para que yo cayera en él y han puesto trampas ocultas para atraparme y darme muerte. 23 SEÑOR, tú conoces todos sus planes homicidas en contra mía. No los perdones, no te hagas el disimulado ante tanta perversidad, sino hazlos morir ante tu presencia. ¡Encárgate de ellos como se merecen!

The Potter and the Clay

1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2 “Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will let you hear^[1] my words.” (1 Cr 4:23; Jer 19:1; Zac 11:13) 3 So I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was working at his wheel. (1 Cr 4:23; Jer 19:1; Zac 11:13) 4 And the vessel he was making of clay was spoiled in the potter’s hand, and he reworked it into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to do. (Jer 13:7; Ro 9:21) 5 Then the word of the Lord came to me: 6 “O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter has done? declares the Lord. 7 If at any time I declare concerning a nation or a kingdom, that I will pluck up and break down and destroy it, (Jer 1:10; Jer 42:10) 8 and if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turns from its evil, I will relent of the disaster that I intended to do to it. 9 And if at any time I declare concerning a nation or a kingdom that I will build and plant it, (Jer 18:7) 10 and if it does evil in my sight, not listening to my voice, then I will relent of the good that I had intended to do to it. 11 Now, therefore, say to the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: ‘Thus says the Lord, Behold, I am shaping disaster against you and devising a plan against you. 18 Then they said, “Come, let us make plots against Jeremiah, for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. 19 Hear me, O Lord, and listen to the voice of my adversaries. (Sal 35:1; Is 49:25) 20 Should good be repaid with evil? Yet they have dug a pit for my life. 21 Therefore deliver up their children to famine; give them over to the power of the sword; let their wives become childless and widowed. May their men meet death by pestilence, their youths be struck down by the sword in battle. (Sal 109:9; Sal 109:10) 22 May a cry be heard from their houses, when you bring the plunderer suddenly upon them! For they have dug a pit to take me and laid snares for my feet.
