3Es fuhr aber der Satan in Judas, genannt Iskariot, der zur Zahl der Zwölf gehörte. (Lk 4,13)4Und er ging hin und redete mit den Hohenpriestern und mit den Hauptleuten darüber, wie er ihnen Jesus überantworten könnte.5Und sie wurden froh und kamen überein, ihm Geld zu geben.6Und er sagte es zu und suchte eine Gelegenheit, dass er ihn an sie ausliefere ohne Aufsehen.
Das Abendmahl
7Es kam nun der Tag der Ungesäuerten Brote, an dem man das Passalamm opfern musste. (2Mo 12,3; 2Mo 12,18)8Und er sandte Petrus und Johannes und sprach: Geht hin und bereitet uns das Passalamm, damit wir’s essen.9Sie aber fragten ihn: Wo willst du, dass wir’s bereiten?10Er sprach zu ihnen: Siehe, wenn ihr hineinkommt in die Stadt, wird euch ein Mensch begegnen, der trägt einen Wasserkrug; folgt ihm in das Haus, in das er hineingeht,11und sagt zu dem Hausherrn: Der Meister lässt dir sagen: Wo ist die Herberge, in der ich das Passalamm essen kann mit meinen Jüngern?12Und er wird euch einen großen Saal zeigen, schön ausgelegt; dort bereitet das Mahl.13Sie gingen hin und fanden’s, wie er ihnen gesagt hatte, und bereiteten das Passalamm. (Lk 19,32)14Und als die Stunde kam, setzte er sich nieder und die Apostel mit ihm.15Und er sprach zu ihnen: Mich hat herzlich verlangt, dies Passalamm mit euch zu essen, ehe ich leide.16Denn ich sage euch, dass ich es nicht mehr essen werde, bis es erfüllt wird im Reich Gottes. (Lk 13,29)17Und er nahm den Kelch, dankte und sprach: Nehmt ihn und teilt ihn unter euch;18denn ich sage euch: Ich werde von nun an nicht trinken von dem Gewächs des Weinstocks, bis das Reich Gottes kommt.19Und er nahm das Brot, dankte und brach’s und gab’s ihnen und sprach: Das ist mein Leib, der für euch gegeben wird; das tut zu meinem Gedächtnis. (1Kor 10,16; 1Kor 11,23)20Desgleichen auch den Kelch nach dem Mahl und sprach: Dieser Kelch ist der neue Bund[1] in meinem Blut, das für euch vergossen wird! (2Mo 24,8; Jer 31,31)21Doch siehe, die Hand meines Verräters ist mit mir am Tisch.22Denn der Menschensohn geht zwar dahin, wie es beschlossen ist; doch weh dem Menschen, durch den er verraten wird!23Und sie fingen an, untereinander zu fragen, wer es wohl wäre unter ihnen, der das tun würde.
Gespräche mit den Jüngern
24Es erhob sich auch ein Streit unter ihnen, wer von ihnen als der Größte gelten sollte. (Mt 20,25; Mk 10,42; Lk 9,46)25Er aber sprach zu ihnen: Die Könige herrschen über ihre Völker, und ihre Machthaber lassen sich Wohltäter nennen.26Ihr aber nicht so! Sondern der Größte unter euch soll sein wie der Jüngste und der Vornehmste wie ein Diener.27Denn wer ist größer: der zu Tisch sitzt oder der dient? Ist’s nicht der, der zu Tisch sitzt? Ich aber bin unter euch wie ein Diener.28Ihr aber seid’s, die ihr ausgeharrt habt bei mir in meinen Anfechtungen. (Joh 6,67)29Und wie mir mein Vater das Reich bestimmt hat, so bestimme ich für euch, (Lk 12,32)30dass ihr essen und trinken sollt an meinem Tisch in meinem Reich und sitzen auf Thronen und richten die zwölf Stämme Israels. (Mt 19,28)31Simon, Simon, siehe, der Satan hat begehrt, euch zu sieben wie den Weizen. (2Kor 2,11)32Ich aber habe für dich gebeten, dass dein Glaube nicht aufhöre. Und wenn du dann umkehrst, so stärke deine Brüder. (Joh 17,9; Joh 17,11; Joh 17,15)33Er aber sprach zu ihm: Herr, ich bin bereit, mit dir ins Gefängnis und in den Tod zu gehen.34Er aber sprach: Petrus, ich sage dir: Der Hahn wird heute nicht krähen, ehe du dreimal geleugnet hast, dass du mich kennst.35Und er sprach zu ihnen: Als ich euch ausgesandt habe ohne Geldbeutel, ohne Tasche und ohne Schuhe, habt ihr je Mangel gehabt? Sie sprachen: Nein, keinen. (Lk 9,3; Lk 10,4)36Da sprach er zu ihnen: Aber nun, wer einen Geldbeutel hat, der nehme ihn, desgleichen auch eine Tasche, und wer’s nicht hat, verkaufe seinen Mantel und kaufe ein Schwert.37Denn ich sage euch: Es muss das an mir vollendet werden, was geschrieben steht: »Er ist zu den Übeltätern gerechnet worden.« Denn was von mir geschrieben ist, das hat ein Ende.38Sie sprachen aber: Herr, siehe, hier sind zwei Schwerter. Er aber sprach zu ihnen: Es ist genug.
Jesus in Gethsemane
39Und er ging nach seiner Gewohnheit hinaus an den Ölberg. Es folgten ihm aber auch die Jünger. (Lk 21,37)40Und als er dahin kam, sprach er zu ihnen: Betet, dass ihr nicht in Anfechtung fallt!41Und er riss sich von ihnen los, etwa einen Steinwurf weit, und kniete nieder, betete42und sprach: Vater, willst du, so nimm diesen Kelch von mir; doch nicht mein, sondern dein Wille geschehe! (Mt 6,10; Joh 18,11)43[Es erschien ihm aber ein Engel vom Himmel und stärkte ihn.44Und er geriet in Todesangst und betete heftiger. Und sein Schweiß wurde wie Blutstropfen, die auf die Erde fielen.][2]45Und er stand auf von dem Gebet und kam zu seinen Jüngern und fand sie schlafend vor Traurigkeit46und sprach zu ihnen: Was schlaft ihr? Steht auf und betet, damit ihr nicht in Anfechtung fallt!
Jesu Gefangennahme
47Als er aber noch redete, siehe, da kam eine Schar; und einer von den Zwölfen, der mit dem Namen Judas, ging vor ihnen her und nahte sich Jesus, um ihn zu küssen.48Jesus aber sprach zu ihm: Judas, verrätst du den Menschensohn mit einem Kuss?49Als aber, die um ihn waren, sahen, was geschehen würde, sprachen sie: Herr, sollen wir mit dem Schwert dreinschlagen?50Und einer von ihnen schlug nach dem Knecht des Hohenpriesters und hieb ihm sein rechtes Ohr ab.51Da sprach Jesus: Lasst ab! Nicht weiter! Und er rührte sein Ohr an und heilte ihn.52Jesus aber sprach zu den Hohenpriestern und Hauptleuten des Tempels und den Ältesten, die zu ihm hergekommen waren: Ihr seid wie gegen einen Räuber mit Schwertern und mit Stangen ausgezogen?53Ich bin täglich bei euch im Tempel gewesen, und ihr habt nicht Hand an mich gelegt. Aber dies ist eure Stunde und die Macht der Finsternis. (Lk 19,47; Lk 20,19; Joh 7,30; Joh 8,20)
Die Verleugnung des Petrus
54Sie ergriffen ihn aber und führten ihn ab und brachten ihn in das Haus des Hohenpriesters. Petrus aber folgte von ferne.55Da zündeten sie ein Feuer an mitten im Hof und setzten sich zusammen; und Petrus setzte sich mitten unter sie.56Da sah ihn eine Magd im Licht sitzen und sah ihn genau an und sprach: Dieser war auch mit ihm.57Er aber leugnete und sprach: Frau, ich kenne ihn nicht.58Und nach einer kleinen Weile sah ihn ein anderer und sprach: Du bist auch einer von denen. Petrus aber sprach: Mensch, ich bin’s nicht.59Und nach einer Weile, etwa nach einer Stunde, bekräftigte es ein anderer und sprach: Wahrhaftig, dieser war auch mit ihm; denn er ist auch ein Galiläer.60Petrus aber sprach: Mensch, ich weiß nicht, was du sagst. Und alsbald, während er noch redete, krähte der Hahn.61Und der Herr wandte sich und sah Petrus an. Und Petrus gedachte an des Herrn Wort, wie er zu ihm gesagt hatte: Ehe heute der Hahn kräht, wirst du mich dreimal verleugnen.62Und Petrus ging hinaus und weinte bitterlich.
Jesu Verspottung
63Die Männer aber, die Jesus gefangen hielten, verspotteten ihn und schlugen ihn,64verdeckten sein Angesicht und fragten: Weissage, wer ist’s, der dich schlug?65Und viele andere Lästerungen sagten sie gegen ihn.
Jesus vor dem Hohen Rat
66Und als es Tag wurde, versammelte sich der Rat der Ältesten des Volkes – Hohepriester und Schriftgelehrte –, und sie führten ihn vor ihren Hohen Rat67und sprachen: Bist du der Christus, so sage es uns! Er sprach aber zu ihnen: Sage ich’s euch, so glaubt ihr’s nicht; (Joh 3,12; Joh 10,24)68frage ich aber, so antwortet ihr nicht.69Aber von nun an wird der Menschensohn sitzen zur Rechten der Kraft Gottes. (Ps 110,1; Apg 7,56)70Da sprachen sie alle: Bist du denn Gottes Sohn? Er sprach zu ihnen: Ihr sagt es, ich bin es.71Sie aber sprachen: Was bedürfen wir noch eines Zeugnisses? Wir haben’s selbst gehört aus seinem Munde. (Lk 11,54)
1The Feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was near.2The chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for a way to get rid of Jesus. They were afraid of the people.3Then Satan entered Judas, who was called Iscariot. Judas was one of the 12 disciples.4He went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard. He talked with them about how he could hand Jesus over to them.5They were delighted and agreed to give him money.6Judas accepted their offer. He watched for the right time to hand Jesus over to them. He wanted to do it when no crowd was around.
The Last Supper
7Then the day of Unleavened Bread came. That was the time the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.8Jesus sent Peter and John on ahead. ‘Go’, he told them. ‘Prepare for us to eat the Passover meal.’9‘Where do you want us to prepare for it?’ they asked.10Jesus replied, ‘When you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house he enters.11Then say to the owner of the house, “The Teacher asks, ‘Where is the guest room? Where can I eat the Passover meal with my disciples?’ ”12He will show you a large upstairs room with furniture already in it. Prepare for us to eat there.’13Peter and John left. They found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover meal.14When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles took their places at the table.15He said to them, ‘I have really looked forward to eating this Passover meal with you. I wanted to do this before I suffer.16I tell you, I will not eat the Passover meal again until it is celebrated in God’s kingdom.’17After Jesus took the cup, he gave thanks. He said, ‘Take this cup and share it among yourselves.18I tell you, I will not drink wine with you again until God’s kingdom comes.’19Then Jesus took bread. He gave thanks and broke it. He handed it to them and said, ‘This is my body. It is given for you. Every time you eat it, do this in memory of me.’20In the same way, after the supper he took the cup. He said, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood. It is poured out for you.21But someone here is going to hand me over to my enemies. His hand is with mine on the table.22The Son of Man will go to his death, just as God has already decided. But how terrible it will be for the one who hands him over!’23The apostles began to ask one another about this. They wondered which one of them would do it.24They also started to argue. They disagreed about which of them was thought to be the most important person.25Jesus said to them, ‘The kings of the Gentiles hold power over their people. And those who order them around call themselves Protectors.26But you must not be like that. Instead, the most important among you should be like the youngest. The one who rules should be like the one who serves.27Who is more important? Is it the one at the table, or the one who serves? Isn’t it the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.28You have stood by me during my troubles.29And I give you a kingdom, just as my Father gave me a kingdom.30Then you will eat and drink at my table in my kingdom. And you will sit on thrones, judging the 12 tribes of Israel.31‘Simon, Simon! Satan has asked to sift all of you disciples like wheat.32But I have prayed for you, Simon. I have prayed that your faith will not fail. When you have turned back, help your brothers to be strong.’33But Simon replied, ‘Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.’34Jesus answered, ‘I tell you, Peter, you will say three times that you don’t know me. And you will do it before the cockerel crows today.’35Then Jesus asked the disciples, ‘Did you need anything when I sent you without a purse, bag or sandals?’ ‘Nothing’, they answered.36He said to them, ‘But now if you have a purse, take it. And also take a bag. If you don’t have a sword, sell your coat and buy one.37It is written, “He was counted among those who had committed crimes.” I tell you that what is written about me must come true. Yes, it is already coming true.’ (Jes 53,12)38The disciples said, ‘See, Lord, here are two swords.’ ‘Two swords are enough!’ he replied.
Jesus prays on the Mount of Olives
39Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives. His disciples followed him.40When they reached the place, Jesus spoke. ‘Pray that you won’t fall into sin when you are tempted,’ he said to them.41Then he went a short distance away from them. There he got down on his knees and prayed.42He said, ‘Father, if you are willing, take this cup of suffering away from me. But do what you want, not what I want.’43An angel from heaven appeared to Jesus and gave him strength.44Because he was very sad and troubled, he prayed even harder. His sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.45After that, he got up from prayer and went back to the disciples. He found them sleeping. They were worn out because they were very sad.46‘Why are you sleeping?’ he asked them. ‘Get up! Pray that you won’t fall into sin when you are tempted.’
Jesus is arrested
47While Jesus was still speaking, a crowd came up. The man named Judas was leading them. He was one of the 12 disciples. Judas approached Jesus to kiss him.48But Jesus asked him, ‘Judas, are you handing over the Son of Man with a kiss?’49Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen. So they said, ‘Lord, should we use our swords against them?’50One of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear.51But Jesus answered, ‘Stop this!’ And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.52Then Jesus spoke to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders. They had all come for him. ‘Am I leading a band of armed men against you?’ he asked. ‘Do you have to come with swords and clubs?53Every day I was with you in the temple courtyard. And you didn’t lay a hand on me. But this is your hour. This is when darkness rules.’
Peter says he does not know Jesus
54Then the men arrested Jesus and led him away. They took him into the high priest’s house. Peter followed from far away.55Some people there started a fire in the middle of the courtyard. Then they sat down together. Peter sat down with them.56A female servant saw him sitting there in the firelight. She looked closely at him. Then she said, ‘This man was with Jesus.’57But Peter said he had not been with him. ‘Woman, I don’t know him,’ he said.58A little later someone else saw Peter. ‘You also are one of them,’ he said. ‘No’, Peter replied. ‘I’m not!’59About an hour later, another person spoke up. ‘This fellow must have been with Jesus,’ he said. ‘He is from Galilee.’60Peter replied, ‘Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!’ Just as he was speaking, the cockerel crowed.61The Lord turned and looked right at Peter. Then Peter remembered what the Lord had spoken to him. ‘The cockerel will crow today,’ Jesus had said. ‘Before it does, you will say three times that you don’t know me.’62Peter went outside. He broke down and cried.
The guards make fun of Jesus
63There were men guarding Jesus. They began laughing at him and beating him.64They blindfolded him. They said, ‘Prophesy! Who hit you?’65They also said many other things to make fun of him.
Jesus is brought to Pilate and Herod
66At dawn the elders of the people met together. These included the chief priests and the teachers of the law. Jesus was led to them.67‘If you are the Messiah,’ they said, ‘tell us.’ Jesus answered, ‘If I tell you, you will not believe me.68And if I asked you, you would not answer.69But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.’70They all asked, ‘Are you the Son of God then?’ He replied, ‘You say that I am.’71Then they said, ‘Why do we need any more witnesses? We have heard it from his own lips.’
