Die Bundeslade bei den Philistern

1 Die Philister aber hatten die Lade Gottes genommen und brachten sie von Eben-Eser nach Aschdod. 2 Und die Philister nahmen die Lade Gottes und brachten sie in das Haus Dagons und stellten sie neben Dagon. (Ri 16,23) 3 Und als die Leute von Aschdod am andern Morgen sich früh aufmachten und in das Haus Dagons kamen, sahen sie Dagon auf seinem Antlitz liegen auf der Erde vor der Lade des HERRN. Und sie nahmen Dagon und stellten ihn wieder an seinen Ort. 4 Aber als sie am andern Morgen früh sich wieder aufmachten, fanden sie Dagon abermals auf seinem Antlitz auf der Erde vor der Lade des HERRN liegen, aber sein Haupt und seine beiden Hände abgeschlagen auf der Schwelle, dass der Rumpf allein dalag. 5 Darum treten die Priester Dagons und alle, die in Dagons Haus gehen, nicht auf die Schwelle Dagons in Aschdod bis auf diesen Tag. (Zef 1,9) 6 Aber die Hand des HERRN lag schwer auf den Leuten von Aschdod, und er brachte Verderben über sie und schlug sie mit bösen Beulen, Aschdod und sein Gebiet. (2Mo 9,10; Ps 78,66) 7 Als aber die Leute von Aschdod sahen, dass es so zuging, sprachen sie: Lasst die Lade des Gottes Israels nicht bei uns bleiben; denn seine Hand liegt zu hart auf uns und unserm Gott Dagon. 8 Und sie sandten hin und versammelten alle Fürsten der Philister zu sich und sprachen: Was sollen wir mit der Lade des Gottes Israels machen? Da antworteten sie: Lasst die Lade des Gottes Israels nach Gat tragen. Und sie trugen die Lade des Gottes Israels dorthin. 9 Als man sie aber dorthin getragen hatte, entstand durch die Hand des HERRN in der Stadt ein sehr großer Schrecken; denn er schlug die Leute in der Stadt, Klein und Groß, sodass an ihnen Beulen ausbrachen. 10 Da sandten sie die Lade Gottes nach Ekron. Als aber die Lade Gottes nach Ekron kam, schrien die Leute von Ekron: Sie haben die Lade des Gottes Israels hergetragen zu mir, dass sie mich töte und mein Volk! 11 Da sandten sie hin und versammelten alle Fürsten der Philister und sprachen: Sendet die Lade des Gottes Israels zurück an ihren Ort, dass sie mich und mein Volk nicht töte. Denn es kam ein tödlicher Schrecken über die ganze Stadt; die Hand Gottes lag schwer auf ihr. 12 Und die Leute, die nicht starben, wurden geschlagen mit Beulen, und das Geschrei der Stadt stieg auf gen Himmel.

The ark in Ashdod and Ekron

1 The Philistines had captured the ark of God. They took it from Ebenezer to Ashdod. 2 They carried the ark into the temple of their god Dagon. They set it down beside the statue of Dagon. 3 The people of Ashdod got up early the next day. They saw the statue of Dagon. There it was, lying on the ground! It had fallen on its face in front of the ark of the LORD. So they picked up the statue of Dagon. They put it back in its place. 4 But the following morning when they got up, they saw the statue of Dagon. There it was, lying on the ground again! It had fallen on its face in front of the ark of the LORD. Its head and hands had been broken off. Only the body of the statue was left. Its head and hands were lying in the doorway of the temple. 5 That’s why to this day no one steps on the bottom part of the doorway of Dagon’s temple at Ashdod. Not even the priests of Dagon step there. 6 The LORD’s power was against the people of Ashdod and the settlements near it. He destroyed them. He made them suffer with growths in their bodies. 7 The people of Ashdod saw what was happening. They said, ‘The ark of the god of Israel must not stay here with us. His power is against us and against our god Dagon.’ 8 So they called together all the rulers of the Philistines. They asked them, ‘What should we do with the ark of the god of Israel?’ The rulers answered, ‘Let the ark be moved to Gath.’ So they moved it. 9 But after the people of Ashdod had moved the ark, the LORD’s power was against Gath. That threw its people into a great panic. The LORD made them break out with growths in their bodies. It happened to young people and old people alike. 10 So the ark of God was sent to Ekron. As the ark was entering Ekron, the people of the city cried out. They shouted, ‘They’ve brought the ark of the god of Israel to us. They want to kill us and our people.’ 11 So they called together all the rulers of the Philistines. They said, ‘Send the ark of the god of Israel away. Let it go back to its own place. If you don’t, it will kill us and our people.’ The death of so many people had filled the city with panic. God’s power was against the city. 12 Those who didn’t die suffered with growths in their bodies. The people of Ekron cried out to heaven for help.
