Johannes 12

Lutherbibel 2017

King James Version

1 Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead.2 There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him.3 Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.4 Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which should betray him,5 Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.7 Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this.8 For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.9 Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.10 But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death;11 Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.12 On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,13 Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.14 And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written,15 Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt.16 These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him.17 The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record.18 For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle.19 The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.20 And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast:21 The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus.22 Philip cometh and telleth Andrew: and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus.23 And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.25 He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.26 If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.27 Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.28 Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.29 The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him.30 Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.33 This he said, signifying what death he should die.34 The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man?35 Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.36 While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.37 But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him:38 That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?39 Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again,40 He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.41 These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.42 Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue:43 For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.44 Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me.45 And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.47 And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.49 For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.50 And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.

English Standard Version

von Crossway
1 Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. (Mt 26,6; Mk 14,3; Joh 11,1; Joh 11,55; Joh 12,12; Joh 12,20)2 So they gave a dinner for him there. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table. (Lk 10,38; Lk 10,40)3 Mary therefore took a pound[1] of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. (Lk 7,37)4 But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said,5 “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii[2] and given to the poor?” (Joh 13,29)6 He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it. (Joh 12,5)7 Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it[3] for the day of my burial.8 For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.”9 When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus[4] was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. (Joh 11,44)10 So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well, (Lk 16,31)11 because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus. (Joh 11,45; Joh 12,18)

The Triumphal Entry

12 The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. (Mt 21,4; Mk 11,7; Lk 19,35)13 So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” (Ps 118,25; Joh 1,49; Joh 5,43; Offb 7,9)14 And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,15 “Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!” (Sach 9,9)16 His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him. (Mk 9,32; Joh 2,22; Joh 7,39; Joh 12,23; Joh 13,7)17 The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. (Lk 19,37)18 The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign. (Joh 12,9)19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.” (Joh 3,26; Joh 11,47)20 Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. (1Kön 8,41; Mk 7,26; Joh 7,35; Apg 8,27; Apg 17,4)21 So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” (Joh 1,44)22 Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. (Mk 13,3)23 And Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. (Mk 14,41; Joh 2,4; Joh 12,16; Joh 12,27; Joh 13,31; Joh 17,1)24 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. (1Kor 15,36)25 Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. (Mt 10,39; Lk 14,26; Joh 11,25)26 If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him. (1Sam 2,30; Ps 91,15; Joh 8,12; Joh 14,3; Joh 14,21; Joh 14,23; Joh 16,27; Joh 17,24; Joh 21,18; 2Kor 5,8; 1Thess 4,17)27 “Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to this hour. (Mk 14,35; Lk 22,44; Joh 11,33; Joh 12,23; Joh 13,21; Joh 18,37; Hebr 5,7)28 Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” (Mt 3,17; Mt 17,5; Mk 1,11; Mk 9,7; Lk 3,22; Lk 9,35; 2Petr 1,17)29 The crowd that stood there and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.” (Apg 23,9)30 Jesus answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not mine. (Joh 11,42)31 Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. (Mt 13,19; Lk 4,6; Lk 10,18; Joh 14,30; Joh 16,11; Joh 16,33; 2Kor 4,4; Eph 2,2; Eph 6,12; Kol 2,15; 1Joh 3,8; 1Joh 4,4; 1Joh 5,19)32 And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” (Joh 3,14; Joh 6,44; Joh 8,28; Röm 5,18; Röm 8,32; 2Kor 5,15; 1Tim 2,6; Hebr 2,9; 1Joh 2,2)33 He said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die. (Joh 18,32)34 So the crowd answered him, “We have heard from the Law that the Christ remains forever. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?” (Ps 89,4; Ps 110,4; Jes 9,7; Hes 37,25; Lk 1,33; Joh 12,32)35 So Jesus said to them, “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. (Jes 9,2; Jer 13,16; Joh 1,4; Joh 1,9; Joh 7,33; Joh 8,12; Joh 11,10; Joh 12,46; Eph 5,8; 1Thess 5,4; 1Joh 1,6; 1Joh 2,11)36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them. (Lk 10,6)37 Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him,38 so that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “Lord, who has believed what he heard from us, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” (Jes 53,1; Mt 1,22; Röm 10,16)39 Therefore they could not believe. For again Isaiah said, (Joh 5,44)40 “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, lest they see with their eyes, and understand with their heart, and turn, and I would heal them.” (Jes 6,10; Mt 13,14; Mk 6,52)41 Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory and spoke of him. (Jes 6,1; Joh 5,46)42 Nevertheless, many even of the authorities believed in him, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue; (Joh 3,1; Joh 7,13; Joh 7,48; Joh 9,22)43 for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God. (Joh 5,44)44 And Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. (Mt 10,40; Joh 5,24; Joh 13,20; Joh 14,1; 1Petr 1,21)45 And whoever sees me sees him who sent me. (Joh 6,40; Joh 14,9)46 I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. (Joh 1,4; Joh 1,9; Joh 8,12; Joh 12,35)47 If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. (Joh 3,17; Joh 3,36; Joh 4,42; Joh 8,15)48 The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day. (5Mo 18,18; Lk 10,16; Röm 2,16)49 For I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment—what to say and what to speak. (Joh 3,17; Joh 5,19; Joh 5,30; Joh 15,10)50 And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has told me.”

1 Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.2 Here a dinner was given in Jesus’ honour. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him.3 Then Mary took about half a litre of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.4 But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected,5 ‘Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages.[1]6 He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.7 ‘Leave her alone,’ Jesus replied. ‘It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial.8 You will always have the poor among you,[2] but you will not always have me.’ (5Mo 15,11)9 Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.10 So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well,11 for on account of him many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and believing in him.12 The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem.13 They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, ‘Hosanna![3]’ ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ‘Blessed is the king of Israel!’ (Ps 118,25; Ps 118,26)14 Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it, as it is written:15 ‘Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.’ (Sach 9,9)16 At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realise that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him.17 Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word.18 Many people, because they had heard that he had performed this sign, went out to meet him.19 So the Pharisees said to one another, ‘See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!’20 Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the festival.21 They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. ‘Sir,’ they said, ‘we would like to see Jesus.’22 Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus.23 Jesus replied, ‘The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.24 Very truly I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.25 Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.26 Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honour the one who serves me.27 ‘Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? “Father, save me from this hour”? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour.28 Father, glorify your name!’ Then a voice came from heaven, ‘I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.’29 The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.30 Jesus said, ‘This voice was for your benefit, not mine.31 Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out.32 And I, when I am lifted up[4] from the earth, will draw all people to myself.’33 He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.34 The crowd spoke up, ‘We have heard from the Law that the Messiah will remain for ever, so how can you say, “The Son of Man must be lifted up”? Who is this “Son of Man”?’35 Then Jesus told them, ‘You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going.36 Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light.’ When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.37 Even after Jesus had performed so many signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him.38 This was to fulfil the word of Isaiah the prophet: ‘Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?’ (Jes 53,1)39 For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:40 ‘He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, so they can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn – and I would heal them.’ (Jes 6,10)41 Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus’ glory and spoke about him.42 Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;43 for they loved human praise more than praise from God.44 Then Jesus cried out, ‘Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me.45 The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me.46 I have come into the world as a light, so that no-one who believes in me should stay in darkness.47 ‘If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.48 There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; the very words I have spoken will condemn them at the last day.49 For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me to say all that I have spoken.50 I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say.’

1 It was six days before the Passover Feast. Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived. Lazarus was the one Jesus had raised from the dead.2 A dinner was given at Bethany to honour Jesus. Martha served the food. Lazarus was among the people at the table with Jesus.3 Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard. It was an expensive perfume. She poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped them with her hair. The house was filled with the sweet smell of the perfume.4 But Judas Iscariot didn’t like what Mary did. He was one of Jesus’ disciples. Later he was going to hand Jesus over to his enemies. Judas said,5 ‘Why wasn’t this perfume sold? Why wasn’t the money given to poor people? It was worth a year’s pay.’6 He didn’t say this because he cared about the poor. He said it because he was a thief. Judas was in charge of the money bag. He used to help himself to what was in it.7 ‘Leave her alone,’ Jesus replied. ‘The perfume was meant for the day I am buried.8 You will always have the poor among you. But you won’t always have me.’9 Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there, so they came. But they did not come only because of Jesus. They also came to see Lazarus. After all, Jesus had raised him from the dead.10 So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus too.11 Because of Lazarus, many of the Jews were starting to follow Jesus. They were believing in him.12 The next day the large crowd that had come for the feast heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem.13 So they took branches from palm trees and went out to meet him. They shouted, ‘Hosanna!’ ‘Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ‘Blessed is the king of Israel!’ (Ps 118,25; Ps 118,26)14 Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it. This is just as it is written in Scripture. It says,15 ‘City of Zion, do not be afraid. See, your king is coming. He is sitting on a donkey’s colt.’ (Sach 9,9)16 At first, Jesus’ disciples did not understand all this. They realised it only after he had received glory. Then they realised that these things had been written about him. They realised that these things had been done to him.17 A crowd had been with Jesus when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead. So they continued to tell everyone about what had happened.18 Many people went out to meet him. They had heard that he had done this sign.19 So the Pharisees said to one another, ‘This isn’t getting us anywhere. Look how the whole world is following him!’20 There were some Greeks among the people who went up to worship during the feast.21 They came to ask Philip for a favour. Philip was from Bethsaida in Galilee. ‘Sir’, they said, ‘we would like to see Jesus.’22 Philip went to tell Andrew. Then Andrew and Philip told Jesus.23 Jesus replied, ‘The time has come for the Son of Man to receive glory.24 What I’m about to tell you is true. Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only one seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.25 Anyone who loves their life will lose it. But anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it and have eternal life.26 Anyone who serves me must follow me. And where I am, my servant will also be. My Father will honour the one who serves me.27 ‘My soul is troubled. What should I say? “Father, keep me from having to go through with this”? No. This is the very reason I have come to this point in my life.28 Father, bring glory to your name!’ Then a voice came from heaven. It said, ‘I have brought glory to my name. I will bring glory to it again.’29 The crowd there heard the voice. Some said it was thunder. Others said an angel had spoken to Jesus.30 Jesus said, ‘This voice was for your benefit, not mine.31 Now it is time for the world to be judged. Now the prince of this world will be thrown out.32 And I am going to be lifted up from the earth. When I am, I will bring all people to myself.’33 He said this to show them how he was going to die.34 The crowd spoke up. ‘The Law tells us that the Messiah will remain for ever,’ they said. ‘So how can you say, “The Son of Man must be lifted up”? Who is this “Son of Man”?’35 Then Jesus told them, ‘You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light. Do this before darkness catches up with you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going.36 While you have the light, believe in it. Then you can become children of light.’ When Jesus had finished speaking, he left and hid from them.37 Jesus had performed so many signs in front of them. But they still would not believe in him.38 This happened as Isaiah the prophet had said it would. He had said, ‘Lord, who has believed what we’ve been saying? Who has seen the Lord’s saving power?’ (Jes 53,1)39 For this reason, they could not believe. As Isaiah says in another place,40 ‘The Lord has blinded their eyes. He has closed their minds. So they can’t see with their eyes. They can’t understand with their minds. They can’t turn to the Lord. If they could, he would heal them.’ (Jes 6,10)41 Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus’ glory and spoke about him.42 At the same time that Jesus did those signs, many of the Jewish leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees, they would not openly admit they believed. They were afraid they would be thrown out of the synagogue.43 They loved praise from people more than praise from God.44 Then Jesus cried out, ‘Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only. They also believe in the one who sent me.45 The one who looks at me sees the one who sent me.46 I have come into the world to be its light. So no one who believes in me will stay in darkness.47 ‘I don’t judge a person who hears my words but does not obey them. I didn’t come to judge the world. I came to save the world.48 But there is a judge for anyone who does not accept me and my words. These words I have spoken will judge them on the last day.49 I did not speak on my own. The Father who sent me commanded me to say all that I have said.50 I know that his command leads to eternal life. So everything I say is just what the Father has told me to say.’
