1 When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death: 2 And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor. 3 Then Judas, which had betrayeth him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, 4 Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that. 5 And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself. 6 And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood. 7 And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in. 8 Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day. 9 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value; 10 And gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me. 11 And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest. 12 And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing. 13 Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee? 14 And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly. 15 Now at that feast the governor was wont to release unto the people a prisoner, whom they would. 16 And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas. 17 Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ? 18 For he knew that for envy they had delivered him. 19 When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him. 20 But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus. 21 The governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas. 22 Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified. 23 And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified. 24 When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it. 25 Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children. 26 Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified. 27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers. 28 And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe. 29 And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews! 30 And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head. 31 And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him. 32 And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross. 33 And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull, 34 They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink. 35 And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots. 36 And sitting down they watched him there; 37 And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS. 38 Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left. 39 And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, 40 And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross. 41 Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, 42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. 43 He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God. 44 The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth. 45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? 47 Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias. 48 And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink. 49 The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him. 50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. 51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; 52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, 53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many. 54 Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God. 55 And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him: 56 Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's children. 57 When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple: 58 He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered. 59 And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed. 61 And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre. 62 Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate, 63 Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again. 64 Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first. 65 Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can. 66 So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.

Iuda se spânzură

3 Atunci lui Iuda, trădătorul, când a văzut că Isus a fost condamnat, i‑a părut rău și a dus înapoi cei treizeci de arginți^[2] la conducătorii preoților și la bătrâni, (Mt 26:15; Ac 1:16) 4 zicând: – Am păcătuit, căci am trădat sânge nevinovat! Ei i‑au răspuns: – Ce ne pasă nouă? Treaba ta! 5 Iuda a aruncat arginții în Templu și a plecat. Apoi s‑a dus și s‑a spânzurat. 6 Conducătorii preoților au luat arginții și au zis: „Nu este voie să fie puși în vistierie^[3], pentru că sunt preț de sânge.“ 7 Și după ce s‑au sfătuit, au cumpărat cu ei Ogorul Olarului ca loc de înmormântare pentru străini. 8 Iată de ce ogorul acela a fost numit „Ogorul Sângelui“ până în ziua de azi. 9 Atunci s‑a împlinit ceea ce a fost spus prin profetul Ieremia^[4], care zice: „Au^[5] luat cei treizeci de arginți, prețul Celui prețuit, la care l‑au prețuit unii dintre fiii lui Israel, (Mr 1:2) 10 și i‑au^[6] dat pe Ogorul Olarului, după cum mi‑a poruncit Domnul“^[7]. Isus înaintea lui Pilat

11 Isus a fost adus deci înaintea guvernatorului. Guvernatorul L‑a întrebat, zicând: – Ești Tu Împăratul iudeilor? Isus a zis: – Tu o spui! (Mr 15:2; Lu 23:2; Joh 18:29) 12 Dar când a fost acuzat de conducătorii preoților și de bătrâni, n‑a răspuns nimic. 13 Atunci Pilat I‑a zis: – Nu auzi de câte lucruri Te învinuiesc ei? 14 Dar Isus nu i‑a răspuns la niciun cuvânt, astfel că guvernatorul era foarte uimit.

Condamnarea lui Isus

15 Guvernatorul obișnuia ca la fiecare sărbătoare să elibereze mulțimii un prizonier pe care‑l voiau ei. (Mr 15:6; Lu 23:13; Joh 18:39) 16 La acea vreme aveau un prizonier vestit, numit Isus^[8] Barabba^[9]. 17 Așadar, după ce s‑a adunat mulțimea, Pilat i‑a întrebat: – Pe cine vreți să vi‑l eliberez, pe Isus Barabba sau pe Isus, Cel numit Cristos? 18 Căci știa că din invidie Îl dăduseră pe mâna lui. 19 În timp ce stătea pe scaunul de judecată, soția lui a trimis să‑i spună: „Să n‑ai nimic de‑a face cu Acel Om drept, pentru că azi am suferit mult în vis din cauza Lui!“ 20 Dar conducătorii preoților și bătrânii au convins mulțimile să‑l ceară pe Barabba, iar Isus să fie omorât. 21 Guvernatorul a răspuns, zicându‑le: – Pe care dintre aceștia doi vreți să vi‑l eliberez? Ei au zis: – Pe Barabba! 22 Pilat a zis: – Și atunci ce să fac cu Isus, numit Cristos? Ei au răspuns cu toții: – Să fie răstignit! 23 El i‑a întrebat: – Dar ce rău a făcut? Însă ei strigau și mai tare: – Să fie răstignit! 24 Când a văzut Pilat că nu ajunge nicăieri, ci că mai degrabă se face tulburare, a luat apă și s‑a spălat pe mâini înaintea mulțimii, zicând: – Eu sunt nevinovat de sângele Acestui Om! Treaba voastră! 25 Și tot poporul, răspunzând, i‑a zis: – Sângele Lui să fie peste noi și peste copiii noștri! 26 Atunci le‑a eliberat pe Barabba, iar pe Isus, după ce a pus să‑L biciuiască^[10], L‑a dat să fie răstignit.

Isus, batjocorit de soldați

27 Atunci soldații guvernatorului L‑au adus pe Isus în pretoriu^[11] și au adunat în jurul Lui toată cohorta^[12]. (Mr 15:16; Joh 19:2) 28 L‑au dezbrăcat și au pus pe El o mantie cărămizie, 29 au împletit o coroană de spini, I‑au așezat‑o pe cap, I‑au pus o trestie în mâna dreaptă și apoi au îngenuncheat înaintea Lui și și‑au bătut joc de El, zicând: „Plecăciune, Împărate al iudeilor!^[13]“ 30 Ei Îl scuipau, Îi luau trestia și‑L loveau peste cap. 31 După ce și‑au bătut joc de El astfel, L‑au dezbrăcat de mantie, L‑au îmbrăcat cu hainele Lui și L‑au dus să‑L răstignească.

Răstignirea

32 Când au ieșit, au găsit un om din Cirena, pe nume Simon, și l‑au obligat pe acesta să ducă crucea lui Isus. (Mr 15:21; Lu 23:26; Joh 19:17) 33 Când au ajuns la locul numit Golgota, căruia i se mai zice și „Locul Craniului“^[14], 34 I‑au dat să bea vin amestecat cu fiere^[15], dar când l‑a gustat, n‑a vrut să‑l bea.^[16] (Ps 69:21; Mr 15:23) 35 După ce L‑au răstignit, și‑au împărțit hainele Lui între ei, aruncând sorții, ca să se împlinească ceea ce a fost spus prin profet: „Și‑au împărțit hainele Mele între ei și au aruncat sorții pentru cămașa Mea.“^[17] (Ps 22:18) 36 Apoi s‑au așezat jos și Îl păzeau acolo. 37 Îi puseseră deasupra capului acuzația pe care era scris: „Acesta este Isus, Împăratul iudeilor.“ 38 Tot atunci au fost răstigniți împreună cu El doi răsculați^[18], unul la dreapta și unul la stânga Lui. 39 Cei ce treceau pe acolo blasfemiau împotriva Lui, dădeau din cap 40 și ziceau: „Tu, Cel Care dărâmi Templul și‑l reconstruiești în trei zile, salvează‑Te pe Tine Însuți! Dacă ești Fiul lui Dumnezeu,^[19] dă‑Te jos de pe cruce!“ 41 Tot astfel și conducătorii preoților, împreună cu cărturarii și bătrânii, Îl batjocoreau, zicând: 42 „Pe alții i‑a salvat, dar pe Sine Însuși nu Se poate salva! Doar este Împăratul lui Israel! Să Se coboare acum de pe cruce și vom crede în El! 43 S‑a încrezut în Dumnezeu; să‑L scape acum Dumnezeu, dacă vrea!^[20] Căci a zis: «Eu sunt Fiul lui Dumnezeu!»“ (Ps 22:8) 44 La fel Îl insultau și răsculații care erau răstigniți împreună cu El.

Moartea lui Isus

45 De la ceasul al șaselea și până la ceasul al nouălea^[21] s‑a făcut întuneric peste toată țara. (Mt 12:1; Mt 15:1; Mr 15:33; Lu 23:44; Joh 19:28)

46 Cam pe la ceasul al nouălea, Isus a strigat cu glas tare, zicând: „Eli, Eli, lema sabactani?“^[22], care înseamnă „Dumnezeul Meu, Dumnezeul Meu, de ce M‑ai părăsit?“^[23] (Ps 22:1) 47 Unii dintre cei ce stăteau acolo L‑au auzit și au zis: „Acest Om îl strigă pe Ilie!“ 48 Imediat unul dintre ei a alergat și a luat un burete, l‑a umplut cu oțet de vin^[24], l‑a pus într‑o trestie și I l‑a dat să‑l bea. 49 Dar ceilalți ziceau: „Lasă să vedem dacă vine Ilie să‑L salveze!“ 50 Isus a strigat din nou cu glas tare și apoi Și‑a dat duhul. 51 Și iată că draperia^[25] Templului s‑a rupt în două, de sus până jos; pământul s‑a cutremurat, stâncile s‑au despicat, (Heb 9:1; Heb 10:14) 52 mormintele s‑au deschis și multe trupuri ale sfinților adormiți au fost înviate. 53 Ei au ieșit din morminte, după învierea Lui, au intrat în Cetatea Sfântă și li s‑au arătat multora. 54 Centurionul^[26] și cei ce‑L păzeau pe Isus împreună cu el, când au văzut cutremurul și cele întâmplate, s‑au înspăimântat foarte tare și au zis: „Într-adevăr Acesta era Fiul lui Dumnezeu!“ (Mt 8:5) 55 Acolo mai erau și multe femei care priveau de departe, cele care Îl urmaseră pe Isus din Galileea și Îi slujiseră. 56 Printre ele erau Maria Magdalena, Maria – mama lui Iacov și a lui Iosif – și mama fiilor lui Zebedei.

Înmormântarea lui Isus

57 Când s‑a făcut seară, a venit un om bogat din Arimateea, pe nume Iosif, care devenise și el ucenic al lui Isus. (Mr 15:42; Lu 23:50; Joh 19:38) 58 Acesta s‑a dus la Pilat și i‑a cerut trupul lui Isus. Atunci Pilat a poruncit să‑i fie dat. 59 Iosif a luat trupul, L‑a înfășurat într‑o pânză de in curată 60 și L‑a pus în propriul său mormânt nou, pe care‑l săpase în stâncă. Apoi a rostogolit o piatră mare la intrarea mormântului și a plecat. 61 Maria Magdalena și cealaltă Maria erau și ele acolo, șezând înaintea mormântului.

Mormântul este păzit

62 A doua zi^[27], cea de după Ziua Pregătirii, conducătorii preoților și fariseii s‑au adunat la Pilat 63 și i‑au zis: – Stăpâne, ne‑am amintit că înșelătorul acela, în timp ce trăia, a zis: „După trei zile voi învia!“ 64 Așadar, poruncește ca mormântul să fie întărit până a treia zi, ca nu cumva ucenicii Lui să vină noaptea și să‑L fure, iar apoi să spună poporului: „A fost înviat dintre cei morți!“ Atunci această înșelăciune din urmă ar fi mai rea decât prima! 65 Pilat le‑a răspuns: – Aveți o gardă.^[28] Duceți‑vă și întăriți‑L cum știți! 66 Ei s‑au dus împreună cu garda și au întărit mormântul, sigilând piatra.
