1 És feljöve az Ammonita Náhás, és tábort jára Jábes Gileád ellen. És elmondták néki a Jábesbeliek beszédeit. 6 És mikor hallotta e beszédeket, az Úrnak lelke Saulra szálla, és az õ haragja nagyon felgerjede. 7 És vett egy pár ökröt, és feldarabolá azokat, és a követektõl elküldé Izráelnek minden határára, mondván: A ki nem vonul Saul után és Sámuel után, annak ökreivel így cselekesznek. És az Úrnak félelme szálla a népre, és kivonulának mind egy szálig. 8 És megszámlálá õket Bézekben. Adjátok elõ a férfiakat, hogy megöljük õket! 13 Saul azonban azt mondá: Senkit se öljetek meg a mai napon, mert ma szerzett szabadulást az Úr Izráelnek. 14 Sámuel pedig monda a népnek: Jertek, menjünk el Gilgálba, és újítsuk meg ott a királyságot. 15 Elméne azért az egész nép Gilgálba, és ott az Úr elõtt Gilgálban királylyá tették Sault; és áldoztak ott hálaáldozatot az Úr elõtt, és felette örvendezének ott, Saul és Izráelnek minden férfiai.

Saul Defeats the Ammonites

1 Then Nahash the Ammonite went up and besieged Jabesh-gilead, and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, “Make a treaty with us, and we will serve you.” (1Móz 26,28; 2Móz 23,32; 2Móz 34,12; 2Móz 34,15; 5Móz 7,2; Bír 21,8; 1Sám 12,12; 1Kir 20,34; Ez 17,13)

2 But Nahash the Ammonite said to them, “On this condition I will make a treaty with you, that I gouge out all your right eyes, and thus bring disgrace on all Israel.” (1Móz 34,14; 4Móz 16,14; 1Sám 17,26) 3 The elders of Jabesh said to him, “Give us seven days’ respite that we may send messengers through all the territory of Israel. Then, if there is no one to save us, we will give ourselves up to you.” 4 When the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul, they reported the matter in the ears of the people, and all the people wept aloud. 14 Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, let us go to Gilgal and there renew the kingdom.” 15 So all the people went to Gilgal, and there they made Saul king before the Lord in Gilgal.
