Der Stamm Ephraim fühlt sich übergangen

1 Die Männer vom Stamm Ephraim machten Gideon heftige Vorwürfe: »Warum hast du uns nicht zu Hilfe gerufen, als du gegen die Midianiter in den Kampf gezogen bist? Wie konntest du uns das antun?« 2 »Wart ihr nicht viel erfolgreicher als ich?«, erwiderte Gideon. »Ist eure Nachlese nicht besser als die ganze Ernte meiner Sippe? 3 Zwei Fürsten der Midianiter hat Gott in eure Hand gegeben, Oreb und Seeb! Ihr habt weit mehr erreicht als ich!« Mit diesen Worten gelang es ihm, die Ephraimiter zu besänftigen.

Die Bewohner von Sukkot und Pnuël helfen Gideon nicht

4 Gideon hatte mit seinen 300 Mann den Jordan überquert. Immer noch verfolgten sie die Feinde und waren sehr erschöpft. 5 Deshalb bat Gideon die Bewohner der nahen Stadt Sukkot: »Gebt doch meinen Soldaten etwas Brot! Sie sind übermüdet, denn wir verfolgen die midianitischen Könige Sebach und Zalmunna!« 6 Doch die führenden Männer von Sukkot antworteten: »Warum sollten wir deiner Truppe Brot geben? Habt ihr Sebach und Zalmunna etwa schon gefasst?« 7 Gideon erwiderte: »Sobald der HERR die beiden Könige in meine Gewalt gegeben hat, werde ich euch mit Dornen und Disteln auspeitschen lassen!« 8 Dann zog er mit seinen Soldaten nach Pnuël weiter und bat auch dort um Brot. Er erhielt die gleiche Antwort wie in Sukkot. 9 »Wenn ich heil zurückkomme, reiße ich den Turm eurer Stadt nieder!«, drohte Gideon.

Gideon besiegt die Midianiter

10 Sebach und Zalmunna hatten mit ihren Truppen in Karkor Halt gemacht. Nur noch 15.000 Soldaten waren vom großen Heer aus dem Osten übrig geblieben, 120.000 waren gefallen. 11 Gideon folgte den Midianitern auf der Karawanenstraße östlich von Nobach und Jogboha. Dann griff er ihr Heerlager an, während sie sich noch in Sicherheit wähnten. 12 Die Feinde gerieten in Angst und Schrecken. Sebach und Zalmunna flohen, doch Gideon jagte ihnen nach und nahm sie gefangen. 13 Nach der Schlacht machte er sich auf den Rückweg. Als er den Pass von Heres hinabstieg, 14 traf er einen jungen Mann aus Sukkot. Gideon packte ihn und befahl ihm, die Namen der führenden Männer und Beamten der Stadt aufzuschreiben. Es waren 77. 15 Gideon ging zu ihnen und erklärte: »Hier sind Sebach und Zalmunna! Ihr habt mich ihretwegen verspottet und gesagt, ihr würdet meiner erschöpften Truppe kein Brot geben, solange wir die Könige nicht gefasst hätten.« 16 Er nahm die führenden Männer fest und ließ sie mit Dornen und Disteln auspeitschen. 17 Dann ging er nach Pnuël, tötete die Männer der Stadt und riss ihren Turm nieder. 18 Schließlich wandte sich Gideon an Sebach und Zalmunna; er fragte: »Wie sahen die Männer aus, die ihr am Berg Tabor umgebracht habt?« »Es waren Männer wie du«, antworteten sie, »jeder sah aus wie ein Königssohn.« 19 Da rief Gideon: »Sie waren meine Brüder, die Söhne meiner Mutter! Ich schwöre euch beim HERRN: Wenn ihr sie am Leben gelassen hättet, würde ich euch nicht töten!« 20 Dann befahl er seinem ältesten Sohn Jeter: »Steh auf und stich sie nieder!« Doch Jeter zögerte, sein Schwert zu ziehen, denn er war noch jung und hatte Angst. 21 Da sagten Sebach und Zalmunna zu Gideon: »Töte du uns! Dazu braucht es einen Mann!« Gideon stand auf und erstach die beiden. Die Halbmonde, die als Amulette an den Hälsen ihrer Kamele hingen, nahm er mit.

Gideon verführt Israel zum Götzendienst

22 Die Israeliten kamen zu Gideon und sagten: »Du hast uns von den Midianitern befreit! Du sollst über uns herrschen und nach dir dein Sohn und dein Enkel!« 23 Er entgegnete: »Ich will nicht über euch herrschen, und mein Sohn darf es auch nicht tun. Der HERR allein soll euch regieren. 24 Nur eine Bitte habe ich an euch«, fügte er hinzu, »gebt mir die Ringe, die ihr erbeutet habt!« Ihre Feinde hatten nämlich goldene Ringe getragen, weil sie Ismaeliter waren. 25 »Das tun wir gern!«, antworteten die Israeliten. Sie breiteten einen Mantel aus und warfen alle erbeuteten Ringe darauf. 26 Das Gold wog insgesamt etwa 20 Kilogramm. Außerdem hatten die Israeliten Halbmonde, Ohrgehänge und königliche Purpurgewänder erbeutet, dazu den kostbaren Halsschmuck der Kamele. 27 Gideon fertigte aus dem Gold ein Gottesbild^[1] an und stellte es in seiner Heimatstadt Ofra auf. Es wurde ihm und seiner Familie zum Verhängnis. Ganz Israel betete das Bild an und brach damit dem Herrn die Treue. 28 Die Midianiter hatten eine schwere Niederlage erlitten, nun forderten sie die Israeliten nicht mehr heraus. Vierzig Jahre, solange Gideon noch lebte, herrschte Frieden im Land. 29 Gideon^[2], der Sohn von Joasch, wohnte weiterhin in Ofra. (Ri 6,32) 30 Er hatte viele Frauen und siebzig Söhne. 31 Eine seiner Nebenfrauen wohnte in Sichem. Sie brachte einen Sohn zur Welt, den er Abimelech nannte. 32 Gideon starb in hohem Alter und wurde neben seinem Vater Joasch in Ofra begraben, der Stadt der Abiësriter. 33 Sobald Gideon nicht mehr lebte, wandten sich die Israeliten schon wieder den Götzen zu. Sie verehrten Baal-Berit 34 und vergaßen den HERRN, ihren Gott, der sie aus der Gewalt ihrer Feinde ringsum befreit hatte. 35 Auch der Familie Gideons erwiesen die Israeliten keinen Dank für all das Gute, das er für sie getan hatte.

The Death of Gideon

29 Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and lived in his own house. (Ri 6,32; Ri 7,1) 30 Now Gideon had seventy sons, his own offspring,^[3] for he had many wives. 33 Dopo la morte di Gedeone, i figli d’Israele ricominciarono a prostituirsi agli idoli di Baal e presero Baal-Berit come loro dio. 34 I figli d’Israele non si ricordarono del Signore, del loro Dio, che li aveva liberati dalle mani di tutti i nemici che li circondavano; 35 e non dimostrarono nessuna gratitudine alla casa di Ierubbaal, ossia di Gedeone, per tutto il bene che egli aveva fatto a Israele.
