Gott wählt Gideons Soldaten aus

1 In aller Frühe führte Gideon, den man auch Jerubbaal nannte, sein Heer zur Quelle Harod. Dort schlugen sie ihr Lager auf. Nördlich von ihnen im Tal lagerten die Midianiter am Fuß des Hügels More. 2 Der HERR sprach zu Gideon: »Du hast zu viele Soldaten! Diesem großen Heer will ich nicht den Sieg über die Midianiter schenken! Sonst werden die Israeliten mir gegenüber prahlen: ›Wir haben uns aus eigener Kraft befreit!‹ 3 Ruf deshalb im Lager aus, dass alle, die Angst haben, umkehren sollen!« So verkleinerte Gideon sein Heer.^[1] 22.000 Mann machten kehrt, und 10.000 blieben zurück. 4 Doch der HERR sagte zu Gideon: »Es sind immer noch zu viele! Führ sie zur Quelle hinab. Ich will sie dort selbst noch einmal prüfen und dir dann sagen, wer mit dir ziehen soll und wer nicht.« 5 Gideon ging mit den Männern an die Quelle. Der HERR befahl ihm: »Alle, die das Wasser auflecken wie ein Hund, stell auf die eine Seite! Auf die andere Seite lass alle gehen, die sich zum Trinken hingekniet haben.« 6 300 Mann führten das Wasser mit der Hand zum Mund und leckten es dann auf, alle anderen knieten zum Trinken nieder.^[2] 7 Da sprach der HERR zu Gideon: »Durch die 300 Männer, die das Wasser aus der Hand getrunken haben, werde ich Israel befreien und die Midianiter in deine Gewalt geben! Alle anderen sollen nach Hause gehen.« 8 Gideon entließ die Männer und behielt nur die 300 bei sich. Sie übernahmen die Vorräte und die Signalhörner der anderen. All dies geschah oberhalb der Talebene, in der die Midianiter lagerten.

Gideon schlägt die Midianiter in die Flucht

9 In der Nacht sprach der HERR zu Gideon: »Greif die Midianiter an! Ich gebe ihr Lager in deine Gewalt! 10 Wenn du aber Angst hast, dann geh vorher mit deinem Diener Pura hinunter 11 und hör dir an, was sie dort reden. Das wird dir Mut geben, sie anzugreifen!« Da ging Gideon mit Pura zum Lager hinab und schlich sich an die bewaffneten Vorposten heran. 12 Die Midianiter, Amalekiter und andere Völker aus dem Osten hatten sich im Tal ausgebreitet wie ein Heuschreckenschwarm. Ihre Kamele waren so zahlreich wie der Sand am Meer. 13 Gideon kam ganz nahe an die feindlichen Soldaten heran und hörte, wie ein Mann gerade zu seinem Kameraden sagte: »Ich muss dir etwas erzählen! Ich habe geträumt, dass ein riesiges Gerstenbrot in unser Lager gerollt ist. Es hat ein Zelt getroffen und umgerissen. Alles flog durcheinander und stürzte zu Boden.« 14 Der andere erwiderte: »Das kann nur eins bedeuten: das Schwert des Israeliten Gideon, des Sohnes von Joasch! Gott wird ihm den Sieg über uns Midianiter und unser ganzes Lager schenken!« 15 Als Gideon den Traum und die Deutung gehört hatte, warf er sich nieder und betete Gott an. Dann kehrte er ins israelitische Lager zurück und rief: »Los! Der HERR gibt die Midianiter in eure Gewalt!« 16 Er teilte seine 300 Soldaten in drei Gruppen und gab jedem Mann ein Signalhorn und einen Krug mit einer Fackel darin. 17-18 »Stellt euch rings um das ganze Heerlager auf«, befahl er, »und achtet genau auf das, was ich tue! Wenn ich mit meinen Leuten zu den Wachposten komme, blasen wir die Hörner. Sobald ihr das hört, tut ihr das Gleiche und schreit laut: ›Wir kämpfen für den HERRN und für Gideon!‹« 19 Gideon erreichte mit seinen 100 Mann den Rand des Lagers, als die mittlere Nachtwache begann und die Posten gerade abgelöst worden waren. Da bliesen sie die Hörner und zerschlugen ihre Krüge. 20 Sofort taten die Männer der beiden anderen Abteilungen das Gleiche. In der rechten Hand hielten sie die Hörner, in der linken die Fackeln und riefen: »Wir kämpfen für den HERRN und für Gideon!« 21 Dabei blieben sie rings um das Heerlager stehen. Die feindlichen Soldaten liefen durcheinander, schrien und versuchten zu entkommen. 22 Während die 300 Israeliten die Hörner bliesen, ließ der HERR überall im Lager Kämpfe unter den Verbündeten ausbrechen. Schließlich floh das ganze Heer in Richtung Bet-Schitta, Zereda^[3], Abel-Mehola und Tabbat. (1Kön 11,26) 23 Gideon rief die Männer der Stämme Naftali, Asser und Manasse zusammen, um die Midianiter zu verfolgen. 24 Er sandte auch Boten zum Stamm Ephraim im Gebirge und ließ den Männern dort ausrichten: »Kommt herab und stellt euch den Midianitern in den Weg! Besetzt die Wasserstellen bis nach Bet-Bara und die Übergänge des Jordan!« Die Ephraimiter folgten der Anordnung, 25 sie nahmen zwei midianitische Fürsten, Oreb und Seeb, gefangen und töteten sie. Die Orte, wo dies geschah, nannten sie Oreb-Fels und Seeb-Kelter. Danach nahmen sie die Verfolgung der Midianiter wieder auf. Als sie den Jordan überquert hatten, trafen sie auf Gideon und übergaben ihm die abgeschlagenen Köpfe der beiden Fürsten.

Gideon’s Three Hundred Men

2 The Lord said to Gideon, “The people with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel boast over me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’ (5Mo 8,17; Jes 10,13) 3 Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him return home and hurry away from Mount Gilead.’” Then 22,000 of the people returned, and 10,000 remained. Gideon Defeats Midian

19 So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outskirts of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, when they had just set the watch. And they blew the trumpets and smashed the jars that were in their hands. 20 Then the three companies blew the trumpets and broke the jars. They held in their left hands the torches, and in their right hands the trumpets to blow. And they cried out, “A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!” (Ri 7,18) 21 Every man stood in his place around the camp, and all the army ran. They cried out and fled. (2Kön 7,7) 22 When they blew the 300 trumpets, the Lord set every man’s sword against his comrade and against all the army. 23 And the men of Israel were called out from Naphtali and from Asher and from all Manasseh, and they pursued after Midian. 24 Gideon sent messengers throughout all the hill country of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against the Midianites and capture the waters against them, as far as Beth-barah, and also the Jordan.” So all the men of Ephraim were called out, and they captured the waters as far as Beth-barah, and also the Jordan. Y el campamento de Madián estaba al norte de ellos, en el valle cercano al collado de Moré. 2 Y dijo YHVH a Gedeón: El pueblo que tienes contigo es muy numeroso para que Yo entregue a Madián en su mano, no sea que Israel se enaltezca contra mí, y diga: Mi mano me ha salvado. 3 Pregona pues a oídos del pueblo, diciendo: ¡Quien tema y tiemble, vuélvase, y retírese del monte de Galaad! Y de los del pueblo se volvieron veintidós mil, y quedaron diez mil. 4 Entonces dijo YHVH a Gedeón: Aún el pueblo es mucho. Y el campamento huyó hasta Bet-sita, en dirección de Zerera, hasta el límite de Abel-mehola, cerca de Tabat. 23 Y fueron convocados los israelitas de Neftalí, de Aser y de todo Manasés, y persiguieron a Madián. 24 Luego Gedeón envió mensajeros por toda la serranía de Efraín, diciendo: ¡Bajad al encuentro de los madianitas y tomad antes que ellos las aguas hasta Bet-bara y el Jordán! Quello del quale ti dirò: “Questo vada con te”, andrà con te; e quello del quale ti dirò: “Questo non vada con te”, non andrà». 5 Gedeone fece dunque scendere la gente all’acqua, e il Signore gli disse: «Tutti quelli che leccheranno l’acqua con la lingua, come la lecca il cane, li metterai da parte; così pure tutti quelli che, per bere, si metteranno in ginocchio». 6 Il numero di quelli che leccarono l’acqua, portandosela alla bocca nella mano, fu di trecento uomini; tutto il resto della gente si mise in ginocchio per bere l’acqua. 7 Allora il Signore disse a Gedeone: «Mediante questi trecento uomini che hanno leccato l’acqua io vi libererò e metterò i Madianiti nelle tue mani. Egli dunque scese con Pura, suo servo, fino agli avamposti dell’accampamento. 12 I Madianiti, gli Amalechiti e tutti i popoli dell’Oriente erano sparsi nella valle come una moltitudine di cavallette e i loro cammelli erano innumerevoli come la sabbia che è sulla riva del mare. 13 Quando Gedeone arrivò, un uomo stava raccontando un sogno a un suo compagno e gli diceva: «Ho fatto un sogno. C’era un pane tondo, d’orzo, che rotolava nell’accampamento di Madian; giungeva alla tenda, la investiva in modo da farla cadere, da rovesciarla, da lasciarla per terra». 14 Il suo compagno gli rispose e gli disse: «Questo non è altro che la spada di Gedeone, figlio di Ioas, uomo d’Israele; Dio ha messo nelle sue mani Madian e tutto l’accampamento». 15 Quando Gedeone ebbe udito il racconto del sogno e la sua interpretazione, adorò Dio; poi tornò all’accampamento d’Israele e disse: «Alzatevi, perché il Signore ha messo nelle vostre mani l’accampamento di Madian!» 16 Divise i trecento uomini in tre schiere, consegnò a tutti quanti delle trombe e delle brocche vuote con delle fiaccole nelle brocche, 17 e disse loro: «Guardate me e fate come farò io. Quando sarò giunto all’estremità dell’accampamento, come farò io, così farete voi; 18 e quando io con tutti quelli che sono con me suonerò la tromba, anche voi suonerete le trombe intorno a tutto l’accampamento e direte: “Per il Signore e per Gedeone!”». 19 Gedeone e i cento uomini che erano con lui giunsero all’estremità dell’accampamento, al principio del cambio di mezzanotte^[1], quando si era appena dato il cambio alle sentinelle. Suonarono le trombe e spezzarono le brocche che tenevano in mano. 20 Allora le tre schiere suonarono le trombe e spezzarono le brocche; con la sinistra presero le fiaccole e con la destra le trombe per suonare, e si misero a gridare: «La spada per il Signore e per Gedeone!» 21 Ognuno di loro rimase al suo posto, intorno all’accampamento; e tutti quelli dell’accampamento si misero a correre, a gridare, a fuggire. 22 Mentre quelli suonavano le trecento trombe, il Signore fece rivolgere la spada di ciascuno contro il compagno per tutto l’accampamento. L’esercito madianita fuggì fino a Bet-Sitta, verso Serera, fino al limite di Abel-Meola, presso Tabbat. 23 Gli Israeliti di Neftali, di Ascer e di tutto Manasse si radunarono e inseguirono i Madianiti. 24 Gedeone mandò dei messaggeri per tutta la regione montuosa di Efraim a dire: «Scendete incontro ai Madianiti e tagliate loro il passo delle acque fino a Bet-Bara e i guadi del Giordano». Così tutti gli uomini di Efraim furono radunati e si impadronirono dei passi delle acque fino a Bet-Bara e dei guadi del Giordano. 25 Presero due prìncipi di Madian, Oreb e Zeeb; uccisero Oreb alla roccia di Oreb e Zeeb al torchio di Zeeb; inseguirono i Madianiti e portarono le teste di Oreb e di Zeeb a Gedeone, dall’altro lato del Giordano.
