1Eines Tages ging Gideons Sohn Abimelech nach Sichem zu den Brüdern seiner Mutter und ihren anderen Verwandten. Er bat sie:2»Fragt die Leute von Sichem, ob sie lieber von den siebzig Söhnen Gideons regiert werden möchten oder von einem einzigen Mann. Erinnert sie daran, dass ich mit euch verwandt bin.«3Die Brüder seiner Mutter erzählten allen Einwohnern von Sichem, was Abimelech ihnen aufgetragen hatte. Die Sichemiter dachten: »Er ist einer von uns«, und entschieden sich für ihn.4Sie gaben ihm 70 Silberstücke aus dem Tempelschatz des Götzen Baal-Berit. Mit dem Geld heuerte Abimelech eine Bande gewissenloser Männer an5und zog mit ihnen nach Ofra, wo die Familie seines Vaters lebte. Dort ermordete er seine eigenen Brüder, die siebzig Söhne von Gideon. Er tötete sie alle auf ein und demselben Felsblock. Nur Jotam, Gideons jüngster Sohn, blieb am Leben, weil er sich versteckt hatte.6Danach versammelten sich alle Einwohner von Sichem und die Bewohner der Festung bei dem Baum, der als Denkmal diente. Dort ernannten sie Abimelech zum König.
Jotam verflucht Abimelech und die Einwohner von Sichem
7Als Jotam davon erfuhr, stieg er auf den Gipfel des Berges Garizim und rief mit lauter Stimme: »Hört mich an, Einwohner von Sichem, dann wird Gott auch auf euch hören!8Einst beschlossen die Bäume, sich einen König zu wählen. Sie baten den Ölbaum: ›Sei unser König!‹9Aber der Ölbaum lehnte ab: ›Soll ich etwa mein Öl aufgeben, das die Götter und die Menschen so sehr an mir schätzen, nur um über den anderen Bäumen zu thronen?‹10Da wandten die Bäume sich an den Feigenbaum: ›Komm du und werde unser König!‹11Der Feigenbaum entgegnete: ›Soll ich aufhören, süße und herrliche Früchte zu tragen, nur um von nun an über euch zu herrschen?‹12Als Nächstes forderten die Bäume den Weinstock auf, ihr König zu werden.13Doch der Weinstock sagte nur: ›Dann könnte ich ja keinen Most mehr geben, der die Götter und die Menschen erfreut! Das kommt nicht in Frage!‹14Schließlich baten die Bäume das Dorngestrüpp: ›Sei du unser König!‹15Das Dorngestrüpp fragte sie: ›Wollt ihr wirklich, dass ich über euch regiere? Dann kommt und vertraut euch mir an, stellt euch in meinen Schatten! Sonst wird aus meinen Dornen ein Feuer hervorbrechen, das sogar die Zedern auf dem Libanon verbrennt!‹16Sagt mir«, fuhr Jotam fort, »war es etwa gut und richtig, dass ihr Abimelech zum König gemacht habt? Habt ihr Gideon und seiner Familie damit einen Dienst getan? Habt ihr ihm den Dank erwiesen, den er verdient hat?17Mein Vater hat für euch gekämpft und sein Leben aufs Spiel gesetzt, um euch von den Midianitern zu befreien!18Aber ihr seid heute über seine Familie hergefallen. Ihr habt seine Söhne auf einem Felsblock abgeschlachtet, siebzig Mann! Abimelech, den Sohn seiner Sklavin, habt ihr zum König von Sichem gemacht, weil er mit euch verwandt ist.19Wenn es wirklich gut und richtig war, was ihr Gideon und seiner Familie angetan habt, dann wünsche ich euch viel Freude mit Abimelech, und ihm mit euch!20Wenn es aber ein Unrecht war, dann soll Feuer von Abimelech ausgehen und euch verzehren, ihr Einwohner von Sichem und ihr Bewohner der Festung. Und danach soll das Feuer von euch auf Abimelech übergreifen und auch ihn vernichten!«21Nachdem Jotam das gerufen hatte, floh er aus Angst vor seinem Bruder Abimelech nach Beer und wohnte dort.
Die Sichemiter lehnen sich gegen Abimelech auf
22Abimelech herrschte drei Jahre über Israel.23Dann schickte Gott einen bösen Geist, der dafür sorgte, dass es zwischen Abimelech und den Sichemitern zum Bruch kam und sie sich von nun an gegen ihn auflehnten.24Denn er sollte bestraft werden für das Verbrechen an seinen eigenen Brüdern, den siebzig Söhnen von Gideon. Auch die Einwohner von Sichem, die ihn zu diesen Morden ermutigt hatten, mussten jetzt dafür büßen.25Bei den Gebirgspässen legten sich die Sichemiter auf die Lauer und raubten jeden aus, der vorüberkam. Das wurde Abimelech berichtet.26Zu dieser Zeit kam Gaal, der Sohn von Ebed, mit seinen Brüdern nach Sichem und gewann das Vertrauen der Menschen dort.27Gemeinsam zogen sie auf die Felder hinaus, hielten Lese in den Weinbergen und kelterten die Trauben. Sie feierten ein rauschendes Erntefest im Tempel ihres Gottes, aßen, tranken und verfluchten Abimelech.28Gaal rief: »Wer ist denn dieser Abimelech schon? Warum sollen wir Sichemiter ihm dienen, diesem Sohn von Gideon? Meint er etwa, wir würden uns Sebul unterwerfen, den er uns als Aufseher vorgesetzt hat? Was glaubt er eigentlich, wer wir sind? Gehorcht lieber den Männern aus der Sippe von Hamor, der diese Stadt gegründet hat!29Wenn ich hier das Sagen hätte, würde ich Abimelech beseitigen. Ja, Abimelech, sammle deine Truppen und stell dich zum Kampf!«
Abimelech kämpft gegen Sichem
30Als Sebul, der führende Mann von Sichem, hörte, was Gaal gesagt hatte, packte ihn der Zorn.31Er sandte heimlich Boten zu Abimelech und ließ ihm ausrichten: »Gaal, der Sohn von Ebed, ist mit seinen Brüdern nach Sichem gekommen und wiegelt die ganze Stadt gegen dich auf!32Bring deine Truppen im Schutz der Dunkelheit hierher. Haltet euch bis zum Morgen in der Umgebung versteckt!33Bei Sonnenaufgang greift an! Wenn Gaal dir dann mit seinen Männern entgegenzieht, kannst du mit ihm tun, was du willst.«34Abimelech brach mit seinem Heer in der Nacht auf. Er teilte es in vier Gruppen ein, die sich an verschiedenen Stellen um Sichem in den Hinterhalt legten.35Als Gaal am Morgen ins Stadttor trat, kamen Abimelech und seine Soldaten aus ihren Verstecken.36Gaal entdeckte sie und sagte zu Sebul: »Siehst du das? Da steigen doch Truppen von den Bergen herab!« Sebul entgegnete: »Was du für Männer hältst, sind nur Schatten auf den Bergen.«37Doch Gaal blieb dabei: »Nein, es sind Truppen, die vom Garizim[1] herunterkommen! Und dort nähert sich eine Abteilung auf der Straße zum Orakelbaum!«38Da sagte Sebul zu ihm: »Du hast den Mund zu voll genommen mit deinen Sprüchen. ›Wer ist schon Abimelech? Warum sollen wir ihm dienen?‹, hast du gesagt. Dort kommen die Leute, die du verspottet hast. Nun geh und kämpf mit ihnen!«39Da rückte Gaal mit den Männern von Sichem aus und führte sie in den Kampf gegen Abimelech.40Der aber trieb sie zurück in die Stadt. Viele kamen bei der Schlacht ums Leben, bis ans Tor war alles mit Leichen übersät.41Dann machte Abimelech kehrt und zog mit seinen Soldaten nach Aruma. Sebul jagte Gaal und seine Brüder noch am selben Tag aus der Stadt.42Am nächsten Morgen wollten die Einwohner von Sichem aufs Feld gehen. Als Abimelech davon erfuhr,43-44teilte er sein Heer in drei Verbände auf, die sich wieder rings um Sichem in den Hinterhalt legten. Er wartete, bis er die Menschen aus der Stadt kommen sah. Dann brach er mit seiner Abteilung aus dem Versteck hervor und versperrte das Stadttor. Die beiden anderen Gruppen fielen über die Leute auf dem Feld her und töteten sie alle.45Danach griff Abimelech die Stadt an. Den ganzen Tag dauerten die Kämpfe, schließlich nahm er Sichem ein und brachte alle Einwohner um. Er zerstörte die Stadt und streute als Zeichen ihrer endgültigen Vernichtung Salz auf die Trümmer.46Als die Bewohner der Festung das sahen, verschanzten sie sich im Kellergewölbe unter dem Tempel des Götzen Baal-Berit.47Das wurde Abimelech gemeldet.48Da stieg er mit seinen Männern auf den Berg Zalmon, hieb mit einer Axt von einem Baum einen großen Ast ab und legte ihn sich auf die Schulter. »Schnell!«, befahl er. »Macht es wie ich!«49Die Männer schlugen sich jeder einen Ast ab und kehrten damit zur Festung zurück. Sie warfen das Holz auf die Decke des Gewölbes, in das sich die Bewohner der Festung geflüchtet hatten, und zündeten es an. Alle Menschen im Gewölbe kamen ums Leben, etwa tausend Männer und Frauen.
Abimelechs Tod
50Von dort zog Abimelech nach Tebez. Er belagerte die Stadt und eroberte sie.51Mitten in Tebez aber stand eine starke Festung. Dorthin flohen alle Bewohner, Männer und Frauen. Sie verriegelten die Tore und stiegen aufs Dach.52Abimelech kämpfte sich an die Festung heran und versuchte, das Tor in Brand zu stecken.53Da warf ihm eine Frau von oben einen Mühlstein auf den Kopf und zerschmetterte ihm den Schädel.54Abimelech rief seinen jungen Waffenträger zu sich und befahl ihm: »Zieh dein Schwert und töte mich! Sonst heißt es: ›Eine Frau hat ihn umgebracht.‹« Da erstach ihn der junge Mann.55Als die Soldaten sahen, dass Abimelech tot war, gingen sie nach Hause.56So strafte Gott Abimelech dafür, dass er seine siebzig Brüder ermordet und seinem Vater ein solches Unrecht angetan hatte. Abimelechs eigene Bosheit hatte ihn schließlich eingeholt!57Auch die Sichemiter mussten für ihr Verbrechen büßen: Gott ließ den Fluch wahr werden, den Gideons Sohn Jotam über sie ausgesprochen hatte.

1Now Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem to his mother’s relatives and said to them and to the whole clan of his mother’s family, (Ri 8,31)2“Say in the ears of all the leaders of Shechem, ‘Which is better for you, that all seventy of the sons of Jerubbaal rule over you, or that one rule over you?’ Remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.” (1Mo 29,14; Ri 8,30; Ri 9,1)3And his mother’s relatives spoke all these words on his behalf in the ears of all the leaders of Shechem, and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech, for they said, “He is our brother.” (Ri 9,18)4And they gave him seventy pieces of silver out of the house of Baal-berith with which Abimelech hired worthless and reckless fellows, who followed him. The Downfall of Abimelech
22Abimelech ruled over Israel three years.23And God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the leaders of Shechem, and the leaders of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech, (1Sam 16,14; 1Sam 18,10; 1Sam 19,9; Jes 33,1)24that the violence done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid on Abimelech their brother, who killed them, and on the men of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to kill his brothers. (Ri 9,56; 1Kön 2,32; Est 9,25; Ps 7,16; Mt 23,35)25And the leaders of Shechem put men in ambush against him on the mountaintops, and they robbed all who passed by them along that way. And it was told to Abimelech.26And Gaal the son of Ebed moved into Shechem with his relatives, and the leaders of Shechem put confidence in him.27And they went out into the field and gathered the grapes from their vineyards and trod them and held a festival; and they went into the house of their god and ate and drank and reviled Abimelech. Diría a Abimelec: ¡Refuerza tu ejército y sal!30Y al oír Zebul, gobernador de la ciudad, las palabras de Gaal ben Ebed, se encendió su ira,31y envió secretamente emisarios a Abimelec, diciendo: He aquí Gaal ben Ebed y sus hermanos han venido a Siquem, y están sublevando la ciudad contra ti.32Ahora pues, ven de noche con la gente que está contigo, y tiende una emboscada en el campo.33Por la mañana, al salir el sol, levántate pronto e irrumpe contra la ciudad; cuando él y el pueblo que lo acompaña salgan hacia ti, haz con él según te venga a mano.34Abimelec entonces, con toda la gente que estaba con él, se levantó de noche y tendió una emboscada contra Siquem, en cuatro escuadrones.35Entonces salió Gaal ben Ebed y se paró a la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad, en tanto que Abimelec y toda la gente que estaba con él, salían de la emboscada.36Y viendo Gaal al pueblo, dijo a Zebul: ¡Mira la gente que baja de las cumbres de los montes! Zebul le respondió: ¡La sombra de los montes te parecen hombres!37Pero Gaal volvió a insistir diciendo: ¡Ve allí gente que baja del Ombligo de la Tierra, y un escuadrón que viene por el camino de Elón-Meonenim.38Y Zebul le respondió: ¿Dónde está esa boca que decía: ¿Quién es Abimelec para que le sirvamos? ¿No es este el pueblo que despreciaste? ¡Sal pues ahora, y pelea con él!39Entonces Gaal salió al frente de los siquemitas, y entabló batalla con Abimelec.40Pero Abimelec lo persiguió, y muchos cayeron muertos cuando huían hacia las puertas de la ciudad.41Luego Abimelec se volvió a Aruma, mientras que Zebul expulsó a Gaal y a sus parientes, impidiéndoles permanecer en Siquem.42Y aconteció que al día siguiente el pueblo salió al campo y se lo comunicaron a Abimelec,43quien tomó a su gente y la repartió en tres escuadrones, y tendió una emboscada en el campo. Cuando vio que el pueblo salía de la ciudad, surgió contra ellos para atacarlos.44Abimelec y el escuadrón que iba con él se desplegaron y se pararon a la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad, mientras los otros dos escuadrones se lanzaron contra todos los que estaban en el campo, y los derrotaron.45Abimelec combatió contra la ciudad todo aquel día, y la conquistó, y mató a la gente que había en ella, arrasó la ciudad y la sembró de sal.46Al oírlo, todos los habitantes de la torre de Siquem se replegaron a la cripta del templo de ’El-Berit.47Cuando se dio aviso a Abimelec de que todos los moradores de la torre de Siquem estaban reunidos,48Abimelec subió al monte Salmón con toda la gente que lo acompañaba. Luego tomó Abimelec el hacha de doble filo en su mano, cortó una rama del árbol, la cual alzó sobre su hombro, y dijo al pueblo que estaba con él: Lo que me habéis visto hacer, apresuraos a hacerlo como yo.49Y todo el pueblo cortó también su rama, y cada uno siguió a Abimelec, y colocándolas contra la fortaleza, prendieron fuego con ellas a la fortaleza, de modo que todos los habitantes de la torre de Siquem murieron, unos mil entre hombres y mujeres.50Después Abimelec marchó a Tebes, puso sitio a Tebes, y la capturó.51Pero en medio de la ciudad había una torre fuerte, donde estaban refugiados todos los hombres y mujeres, los habitantes todos de la ciudad, los cuales, encerrándose dentro, habían subido a la azotea de la torre.52Llegando Abimelec a la torre, la embistió y se acercó hasta su puerta para prenderle fuego.53Entonces, cierta mujer arrojó una piedra encimera de molino sobre la cabeza de Abimelec y le partió el cráneo.54Él llamó apresuradamente a su joven escudero, y le dijo: Desenvaina tu espada y mátame, para que no se diga de mí: ¡Una mujer lo mató! Y el muchacho lo traspasó y murió.55En cuanto los hombres de Israel vieron que Abimelec había muerto, marcharon cada cual a su lugar.56Así retribuyó ’Elohim a Abimelec el mal que había hecho contra su padre, al asesinar a sus setenta hermanos.57También toda la maldad de los hombres de Siquem la hizo volver ’Elohim sobre sus propias cabezas, de manera que vino sobre ellos la maldición de Jotam ben Jerobaal.

1Abimelec, figlio di Ierubbaal, andò a Sichem dai fratelli di sua madre e parlò loro e a tutta la famiglia del padre di sua madre, e disse:2«Vi prego, dite ai Sichemiti, in modo che tutti odano: “Che cos’è meglio per voi, che settanta uomini, tutti figli di Ierubbaal, regnino su di voi, oppure che regni su di voi uno solo?” Ricordatevi ancora che io sono vostre ossa e vostra carne».3I fratelli di sua madre parlarono di lui, ripetendo a tutti i Sichemiti tutte quelle parole; e il cuore loro si inclinò a favore di Abimelec, perché dissero: «È nostro fratello».4Gli diedero settanta sicli d’argento, che tolsero dal tempio di Baal-Berit, con i quali Abimelec assoldò degli avventurieri audaci che lo seguirono.5Egli andò alla casa di suo padre, a Ofra, e uccise sopra una stessa pietra i suoi fratelli, settanta uomini, figli di Ierubbaal; ma Iotam, figlio minore di Ierubbaal, scampò perché si era nascosto.6Poi tutti i Sichemiti e tutta la casa di Millo si radunarono e andarono a proclamare re Abimelec, presso la quercia del monumento che si trova a Sichem.
Avvertimento di Iotam
7Iotam, essendo stato informato della cosa, salì sulla vetta del monte Gherizim e, alzando la voce, gridò: «Ascoltatemi, Sichemiti, e vi ascolti Dio!8Un giorno, gli alberi si misero in cammino per ungere un re che regnasse su di loro; e dissero all’ulivo: “Regna tu su di noi”.9Ma l’ulivo rispose loro: “E io dovrei rinunciare al mio olio che Dio e gli uomini onorano in me per andare ad agitarmi al di sopra degli alberi?”10Allora gli alberi dissero al fico: “Vieni tu a regnare su di noi”.11Ma il fico rispose loro: “E io dovrei rinunciare alla mia dolcezza e al mio frutto squisito per andare ad agitarmi al di sopra degli alberi?”12Poi gli alberi dissero alla vite: “Vieni tu a regnare su di noi”.13Ma la vite rispose loro: “E io dovrei rinunciare al mio vino, che rallegra Dio e gli uomini, per andare ad agitarmi al di sopra degli alberi?”14Allora tutti gli alberi dissero al pruno: “Vieni tu a regnare su di noi”.15Il pruno rispose agli alberi: “Se è proprio in buona fede che volete ungermi re per regnare su di voi, venite a rifugiarvi sotto la mia ombra; se no, esca un fuoco dal pruno e divori i cedri del Libano!”16Ora, avete agito con fedeltà e con integrità proclamando re Abimelec? Avete agito bene verso Ierubbaal e la sua casa? Avete ricompensato mio padre di quello che ha fatto per voi?17Infatti egli ha combattuto per voi, ha messo a repentaglio la sua vita e vi ha liberati dalle mani di Madian,18mentre voi, oggi, siete insorti contro la casa di mio padre, avete ucciso i suoi figli, settanta uomini, sopra una stessa pietra, e avete proclamato re dei Sichemiti Abimelec, figlio della sua serva, perché è vostro fratello.19Se oggi avete agito con fedeltà e con integrità verso Ierubbaal e la sua casa, godetevi Abimelec e Abimelec si goda voi!20Se no, esca da Abimelec un fuoco, che divori i Sichemiti e la casa di Millo; ed esca dai Sichemiti e dalla casa di Millo un fuoco che divori Abimelec!»21Poi Iotam corse via, fuggì a Beer, e rimase lì per paura di Abimelec, suo fratello.
Castigo di Sichem; morte violenta di Abimelec
22Abimelec signoreggiò sopra Israele per tre anni.23Poi Dio mandò un cattivo spirito fra Abimelec e i Sichemiti; e i Sichemiti non furono più fedeli ad Abimelec,24affinché la violenza fatta ai settanta figli di Ierubbaal ricevesse il suo castigo e il loro sangue ricadesse sopra Abimelec, loro fratello, che li aveva uccisi, e sopra i Sichemiti che lo avevano aiutato a uccidere i suoi fratelli.25I Sichemiti posero in agguato contro di lui, sulla cima dei monti, della gente che derubava chiunque passasse per la strada, vicino a loro. Abimelec venne a saperlo.26Poi Gaal, figlio di Ebed, e i suoi fratelli vennero a Sichem e i Sichemiti riposero in lui la loro fiducia.27Usciti nei campi vendemmiarono le loro vigne, pigiarono l’uva e fecero festa. Poi entrarono nella casa del loro dio, mangiarono, bevvero e maledissero Abimelec.28Gaal, figlio di Ebed, disse: «Chi è Abimelec e chi è Sichem, che dobbiamo servirlo? Non è forse il figlio di Ierubbaal? Zebul non è forse il suo commissario? Servite gli uomini di Camor, padre di Sichem! Ma noi perché serviremmo costui?29Ah, se questo popolo fosse ai miei ordini, io scaccerei Abimelec!» Poi disse ad Abimelec: «Rinforza il tuo esercito e fatti avanti!»30Zebul, governatore della città, avendo udito le parole di Gaal, figlio di Ebed, si accese d’ira31e mandò segretamente dei messaggeri ad Abimelec per dirgli: «Ecco, Gaal, figlio di Ebed, e i suoi fratelli sono venuti a Sichem e sobillano la città contro di te.32Àlzati dunque di notte, con la gente che è con te, e fa’ un’imboscata nella campagna;33domani mattina, allo spuntar del sole, ti sveglierai e piomberai sulla città. Quando Gaal e i suoi uomini usciranno contro di te, tu gli farai quel che sarà necessario».34Abimelec e tutta la gente che era con lui si alzarono di notte e si appostarono nei dintorni di Sichem, divisi in quattro schiere.35Intanto Gaal, figlio di Ebed, uscì e si fermò all’ingresso della porta della città; e Abimelec uscì dall’imboscata con la gente che era con lui.36Gaal, veduta quella gente, disse a Zebul: «C’è della gente che scende dall’alto dei monti». Zebul gli rispose: «Tu vedi l’ombra dei monti e la prendi per uomini».37Gaal riprese a dire: «Guarda, c’è gente che scende dalle alture del paese e una schiera che giunge per la via della quercia degli indovini».38Allora Zebul gli disse: «Dov’è ora la tua millanteria di quando dicevi: “Chi è Abimelec, che dobbiamo servirlo?” Non è questo il popolo che disprezzavi? Ora, fatti avanti e combatti contro di lui!»39Allora Gaal uscì alla testa dei Sichemiti e diede battaglia ad Abimelec.40Ma Abimelec lo inseguì ed egli fuggì davanti a lui, e molti uomini caddero morti fino all’ingresso della porta.41Abimelec si fermò ad Aruma, e Zebul scacciò Gaal e i suoi fratelli, che non poterono più rimanere a Sichem.42Il giorno seguente il popolo di Sichem andò nei campi; Abimelec ne fu informato.43Egli prese allora la sua gente, la divise in tre schiere e fece un’imboscata nei campi; e quando vide che il popolo usciva dalla città, mosse contro di loro e ne fece strage.44Poi Abimelec e la gente che era con lui corsero avanti e vennero a porsi all’ingresso della porta della città, mentre le altre due schiere si gettarono su tutti quelli che erano nei campi e ne fecero strage.45Abimelec attaccò la città per tutta la giornata, la prese e uccise la gente che vi si trovava; poi spianò la città e vi sparse sopra del sale.46Tutti gli abitanti della torre di Sichem, udito ciò, si ritirarono nel torrione del tempio di El-Berit.47Fu riferito ad Abimelec che tutti gli abitanti della torre di Sichem si erano radunati lì.48Allora Abimelec salì sul monte Salmon con tutta la gente che era con lui; prese una scure, tagliò un ramo d’albero, lo sollevò e se lo mise sulla spalla; poi disse a quelli che erano con lui: «Quello che mi avete visto fare fatelo presto anche voi!»49Tutti tagliarono dei rami, ognuno il suo, e seguirono Abimelec; posero i rami contro al torrione e lo incendiarono con quelli che vi erano dentro. Così perì tutta la gente della torre di Sichem, circa mille persone, fra uomini e donne.50Poi Abimelec andò a Tebes, la cinse d’assedio e se ne impadronì.51In mezzo alla città vi era una forte torre, dove si rifugiarono tutti gli abitanti della città, uomini e donne; vi si rinchiusero dentro e salirono sul tetto della torre.52Abimelec, giunto alla torre, l’attaccò e si accostò alla porta per appiccarvi il fuoco.53Ma una donna gettò giù un pezzo di macina sulla testa di Abimelec e gli spezzò il cranio.54Egli chiamò subito il giovane che gli portava le armi e gli disse: «Estrai la spada e uccidimi, affinché non si dica: “Lo ha ammazzato una donna!”». Il suo servo allora lo trafisse ed egli morì.55Quando gli Israeliti videro che Abimelec era morto, se ne andarono ognuno a casa sua.56Così Dio fece ricadere sopra Abimelec il male che egli aveva fatto contro suo padre uccidendo i suoi settanta fratelli.57Dio fece anche ricadere sul capo degli uomini di Sichem tutto il male che avevano fatto; e su di loro si compì la maledizione di Iotam, figlio di Ierubbaal.
