1Die Israeliten taten, was dem HERRN missfiel. Da ließ er die Midianiter sieben Jahre lang über sie herrschen.2Die Israeliten wurden von ihnen so schwer unterdrückt, dass sie sich in Felsklüften, in Höhlen und auf den Bergen verstecken mussten.3Immer wenn sie ihre Felder in der Ebene bestellt hatten, kamen die Midianiter, die Amalekiter und andere Völker aus dem Osten,4machten sich im Land breit und vernichteten die ganze Ernte bis nach Gaza am Mittelmeer. Sie ließen nichts übrig, wovon das Volk Israel sich ernähren konnte, und raubten auch alle Schafe, Ziegen, Rinder und Esel.5Mit ihren Herden und Zelten fielen sie wie ein Heuschreckenschwarm über Israel her. Niemand konnte sie und ihre Kamele zählen. So drangen sie immer wieder ins Land ein und verwüsteten es.6-7Die Israeliten gerieten dadurch tief ins Elend. Als sie zum HERRN um Hilfe schrien,8sandte er einen Propheten zu ihnen, der verkündete: »So spricht der HERR, der Gott Israels: Ich habe euch aus der Sklaverei in Ägypten befreit und hierhergebracht.9Aus der Gewalt der Ägypter und aller anderen Unterdrücker habe ich euch gerettet. Ich vertrieb sie und gab euch ihr Land.10Damals sagte ich zu euch: Ich bin der HERR, euer Gott. Verehrt nicht die Götter der Amoriter, in deren Land ihr wohnt. – Aber ihr habt nicht auf mich gehört!«
Der Herr beruft Gideon
11Der Engel des HERRN kam nach Ofra und setzte sich unter eine Eiche auf dem Grundstück, das Joasch gehörte, einem Mann aus der Sippe Abiëser. Joaschs Sohn Gideon drosch gerade Weizen in einer Kelter, um das Getreide vor den Midianitern in Sicherheit zu bringen.12Da erschien ihm der Engel des HERRN und sagte: »Der HERR steht dir bei, du starker Kämpfer!«13Gideon erwiderte: »Ach, mein Herr, wenn Gott uns wirklich beisteht, warum geht es uns dann so schlecht? Wo sind all die Wunder, von denen unsere Eltern uns erzählt haben? Sie sagen, der HERR habe uns aus Ägypten befreit. Aber was ist jetzt? Er hat uns verlassen und den Midianitern ausgeliefert!«14Der HERR sah Gideon an und sagte: »Ich gebe dir einen Auftrag: Geh und rette Israel aus der Gewalt der Midianiter! Du hast die Kraft dazu!«15»Aber wie soll ich Israel denn retten?«, rief Gideon. »Meine Sippe ist die kleinste in Manasse, und ich bin der Jüngste in unserer Familie.«16Der HERR versprach: »Ich stehe dir bei! Du wirst die Midianiter schlagen, als hättest du es nur mit einem einzigen Mann zu tun.«17Gideon entgegnete: »Wenn du wirklich zu mir stehst, dann erlaube mir eine Bitte: Gib mir doch ein Zeichen, dass du, der jetzt mit mir spricht, wirklich Gott bist.18Ich möchte dir eine Gabe holen. Bitte geh nicht weg, bis ich wiederkomme.« Der Herr antwortete: »Ich bleibe, bis du zurück bist.«19Gideon ging ins Haus, nahm gut zehn Kilogramm Mehl und backte ungesäuerte Brote. Danach schlachtete er einen jungen Ziegenbock und bereitete ihn zu; das Fleisch legte er in einen Korb, und die Brühe goss er in einen Topf. Nun brachte er das Essen hinaus zur Eiche und bot es seinem Gast an.20Doch der Engel Gottes sagte zu ihm: »Nimm das Fleisch und das Brot und leg es auf den Felsen hier! Die Brühe gieß aus!« Gideon gehorchte.21Der Engel des HERRN streckte seinen Stab aus und berührte damit das Fleisch und das Brot. Da kam Feuer aus dem Felsen und verzehrte das Essen. Zugleich verschwand der Engel des HERRN.22Nun hatte Gideon keinen Zweifel mehr, er rief: »HERR, mein Gott, ich muss sterben! Denn ich habe den Engel des HERRN von Angesicht zu Angesicht gesehen!«23Da sprach der HERR zu ihm: »Hab keine Angst! Du wirst nicht sterben. Mein Friede ist mit dir.«24Da baute Gideon an dieser Stelle einen Altar und gab ihm den Namen: »Der HERR ist Friede«. Er steht bis heute bei Ofra, der Stadt der Abiësriter.
Gideon zerstört den Altar Baals
25In der folgenden Nacht sprach der HERR zu Gideon: »Nimm den siebenjährigen Stier deines Vaters, das zweitbeste Tier aus seiner Herde![1] Reiß den Altar Baals nieder, der deinem Vater gehört, und hau den Pfahl der Göttin Aschera um, der dort steht! (2Mo 13,11)26Dann bau für mich, den HERRN, deinen Gott, einen Altar an der höchsten Stelle eurer Bergfestung. Schichte das Holz des Pfahles darauf und bring den Stier als Brandopfer dar!«27Gideon nahm zehn seiner Knechte mit und führte aus, was der HERR ihm befohlen hatte. Er tat es jedoch nicht am Tag, sondern in der Nacht, weil er Angst vor der Familie seines Vaters und vor den Männern der Stadt hatte.28Am frühen Morgen entdeckten die Bewohner der Stadt, dass der Altar Baals niedergerissen und der Pfahl der Aschera umgehauen war. Sie sahen auch den neuen Altar, auf dem Gideon den Stier geopfert hatte.29»Wer hat das getan?«, fragten sie einander. Man forschte nach und fand schließlich heraus: »Gideon, der Sohn von Joasch, war es!«30Da forderten die Männer der Stadt von Joasch: »Liefere uns deinen Sohn aus! Er muss sterben, weil er den Altar Baals niedergerissen und den geweihten Pfahl umgehauen hat.«31Joasch antwortete den Versammelten: »Wollt ihr etwa Baal verteidigen? Wollt ihr ihn retten? Wer für Baal kämpft, wird noch in dieser Nacht getötet! Wenn Baal wirklich ein Gott ist, dann soll er sich doch selbst dafür rächen, dass sein Altar zerstört worden ist.«32Weil Gideon den Altar Baals niedergerissen hatte, nannte man ihn von da an Jerubbaal (»Baal soll sich an ihm rächen«).
Gideon bittet Gott um ein Zeichen
33Alle Midianiter, Amalekiter und die Völker aus dem Osten versammelten sich, überquerten den Jordan und schlugen ihr Lager in der Jesreel-Ebene auf.34Da wurde Gideon vom Geist des HERRN ergriffen. Er blies das Horn und rief die Männer der Sippe Abiëser auf, ihm zu folgen.35Er sandte auch Boten zum ganzen Stamm Manasse und zu den Stämmen Asser, Sebulon und Naftali. Sie folgten dem Aufruf und schlossen sich Gideons Truppe an.36Gideon betete: »Bitte gib mir ein Zeichen, dass du Israel wirklich durch mich befreien willst, wie du es angekündigt hast.37Ich lege frisch geschorene Wolle auf den Dreschplatz. Lass doch morgen früh die Wolle vom Tau nass sein, den Boden ringsum aber trocken! Dann weiß ich, dass du Israel durch mich retten möchtest, wie du es gesagt hast.«38Was Gideon erbeten hatte, geschah. Als er am nächsten Morgen früh aufgestanden war, presste er den Tau aus der Wolle. Das Wasser füllte eine ganze Schale.39Da sagte Gideon zu Gott: »Sei nicht zornig, wenn ich dich noch einmal um etwas bitte! Ich möchte es nur noch dies eine Mal mit der Wolle versuchen. Lass sie trocken bleiben und den ganzen Boden nass vom Tau sein.«40In der folgenden Nacht erhörte Gott wieder sein Gebet: Die Wolle allein blieb trocken, und auf dem Boden ringsum lag Tau.
1The people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord gave them into the hand of Midian seven years. (1Mo 25,2; 4Mo 25,17; Ri 2,19; Hab 3,7)2And the hand of Midian overpowered Israel, and because of Midian the people of Israel made for themselves the dens that are in the mountains and the caves and the strongholds. (1Sam 13,6; Hebr 11,38)3For whenever the Israelites planted crops, the Midianites and the Amalekites and the people of the East would come up against them. (1Mo 29,1; Ri 3,13; Ri 6,33; Ri 7,12; Ri 8,10; 1Kön 4,30; Hi 1,3)4They would encamp against them and devour the produce of the land, as far as Gaza, and leave no sustenance in Israel and no sheep or ox or donkey. And he said to them, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: I led you up from Egypt and brought you out of the house of slavery. The Call of Gideon
11Now the angel of the Lord came and sat under the terebinth at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, while his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress to hide it from the Midianites. (Jos 17,2; Ri 8,2; Hebr 11,32)12And the angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to him, “The Lord is with you, O mighty man of valor.” (Jos 1,5; Ri 13,3; Lk 1,11; Apg 10,3)13And Gideon said to him, “Please, my lord, if the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all his wonderful deeds that our fathers recounted to us, saying, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt?’ But now the Lord has forsaken us and given us into the hand of Midian.” (Ps 44,1; Ps 89,49; Jes 63,15)14And the Lord[1] turned to him and said, “Go in this might of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian; do not I send you?” (Jos 1,9; 1Sam 12,11)15And he said to him, “Please, Lord, how can I save Israel? (2Mo 4,1; 2Mo 33,13; Ri 6,36; 2Kön 20,8; Jes 7,11)18Please do not depart from here until I come to you and bring out my present and set it before you.” And he said, “I will stay till you return.” (1Mo 18,3; Ri 13,15)19So Gideon went into his house and prepared a young goat and unleavened cakes from an ephah[2] of flour. The meat he put in a basket, and the broth he put in a pot, and brought them to him under the terebinth and presented them. (1Mo 18,6)20And the angel of God said to him, “Take the meat and the unleavened cakes, and put them on this rock, and pour the broth over them.” And he did so. (Ri 13,19; 1Kön 18,33)21Then the angel of the Lord reached out the tip of the staff that was in his hand and touched the meat and the unleavened cakes. And fire sprang up from the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened cakes. And the angel of the Lord vanished from his sight. (3Mo 9,24; 1Kön 18,38; 2Chr 7,1)22Then Gideon perceived that he was the angel of the Lord. And Gideon said, “Alas, O Lord God! For now I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face.” (1Mo 32,30; 2Mo 33,20; 5Mo 5,26; Ri 13,21)23But the Lord said to him, “Peace be to you. Do not fear; you shall not die.” (Dan 10,19)24Then Gideon built an altar there to the Lord and called it, The Lord Is Peace. To this day it still stands at Ophrah, which belongs to the Abiezrites. (1Mo 22,14; 2Mo 17,15; Ri 6,11; Ri 8,27; Ri 8,32; Hes 48,35)25That night the Lord said to him, “Take your father’s bull, and the second bull seven years old, and pull down the altar of Baal that your father has, and cut down the Asherah that is beside it (Ri 3,7)26and build an altar to the Lord your God on the top of the stronghold here, with stones laid in due order. Then take the second bull and offer it as a burnt offering with the wood of the Asherah that you shall cut down.” (Dan 11,7; Dan 11,10; Dan 11,31)27So Gideon took ten men of his servants and did as the Lord had told him. But because he was too afraid of his family and the men of the town to do it by day, he did it by night.
Gideon Destroys the Altar of Baal
28When the men of the town rose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah beside it was cut down, and the second bull was offered on the altar that had been built.29And they said to one another, “Who has done this thing?” And after they had searched and inquired, they said, “Gideon the son of Joash has done this thing.”30Then the men of the town said to Joash, “Bring out your son, that he may die, for he has broken down the altar of Baal and cut down the Asherah beside it.”31But Joash said to all who stood against him, “Will you contend for Baal? Or will you save him? Whoever contends for him shall be put to death by morning. If he is a god, let him contend for himself, because his altar has been broken down.”32Therefore on that day Gideon[3] was called Jerubbaal, that is to say, “Let Baal contend against him,” because he broke down his altar. (Ri 7,1; 1Sam 12,11; 2Sam 11,21)33Now all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the people of the East came together, and they crossed the Jordan and encamped in the Valley of Jezreel. (Jos 17,16; Ri 6,3)34But the Spirit of the Lord clothed Gideon, and he sounded the trumpet, and the Abiezrites were called out to follow him. (Ri 3,10; Ri 3,27)35And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh, and they too were called out to follow him. And he sent messengers to Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali, and they went up to meet them. (Ri 7,24)
The Sign of the Fleece
36Then Gideon said to God, “If you will save Israel by my hand, as you have said, (2Mo 4,1)37behold, I am laying a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew on the fleece alone, and it is dry on all the ground, then I shall know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you have said.”38And it was so. When he rose early next morning and squeezed the fleece, he wrung enough dew from the fleece to fill a bowl with water.39Then Gideon said to God, “Let not your anger burn against me; let me speak just once more. Please let me test just once more with the fleece. Please let it be dry on the fleece only, and on all the ground let there be dew.” (1Mo 18,32)40And God did so that night; and it was dry on the fleece only, and on all the ground there was dew.

Y Él dijo: Yo me quedaré hasta que vuelvas.19Entonces Gedeón entró y preparó un cabrito y un efa de harina de panes sin levadura; luego puso la carne en una canasta y el caldo en una olla, y lo sacó y se lo ofreció bajo la encina.20Y el ángel de Dios le dijo: Toma la carne y el pan ázimo y ponlos sobre esta peña, y vierte el caldo sobre ellos. Y él lo hizo así.21Entonces el ángel de YHVH extendió el cayado que tenía en su mano, y la punta tocó la carne y el pan ázimo, y subió el fuego de la peña, que consumió la carne y el ázimo. Y el ángel de YHVH desapareció de su vista.22Viendo Gedeón que era el ángel de YHVH, dijo: ¡Ay de mí, Adonay YHVH, porque he visto al ángel de YHVH cara a cara!23Pero YHVH le dijo: ¡Paz sea contigo! No temas, no morirás.24Y Gedeón construyó allí un altar a YHVH, y lo llamó YHVH Shalom, el cual permanece hasta el día de hoy en Ofra de los abiezeritas.25Pues aconteció en aquella misma noche que YHVH le dijo: Toma el novillo que tiene tu padre, el novillo rojo, todo bermejo, y derriba con él el altar de Baal que tiene tu padre, y tala la Asera que está a su lado.26Y construye debidamente un altar a YHVH tu Dios en la parte más alta de esta peña. Luego toma el buey rojo, y ofrécelo en holocausto con la madera de la Asera que habrás cortado.27Tomó pues Gedeón diez hombres de sus siervos, e hizo como le había dicho YHVH. Pero, por temor a la casa de su padre y a los hombres de la ciudad, no hizo eso de día, sino que lo hizo de noche.28Cuando los hombres de la ciudad se levantaron por la mañana, he aquí el altar de Baal estaba demolido y la Asera que había junto a él estaba cortada, y el novillo rojo había sido ofrecido en holocausto sobre el altar construido.29Y se decían unos a otros: ¿Quién ha hecho esto? Y cuando indagaron y preguntaron, se les dijo: Gedeón ben Joás ha hecho esto. Por lo cual los hombres de la ciudad dijeron a Joás:30Saca a tu hijo, para que muera; porque ha demolido el altar de Baal y ha talado la Asera que había junto a él.31Pero Joás respondió a todos los que estaban ante él: ¿Pretendéis contender por Baal, o queréis ayudarle? Quien pretenda contender por él, será muerto antes de la mañana. Si es ’Elohim, que contienda por sí mismo con el que demolió su altar.32Por esto fue apellidado en aquel día Jerobaal, es decir: Contienda con él Baal, por cuanto derribó su altar.33Entre tanto, todos los madianitas, los amalecitas y los hijos del oriente se reunieron a una, y pasando adelante acamparon en el valle de Jezreel.34Entonces el Espíritu de YHVH revistió a Gedeón, el cual resonó el shofar, y se juntaron los abiezeritas en pos de él.35Igualmente envió mensajeros por todo Manasés, y ellos también se reunieron con él. Asimismo envió mensajeros por Aser, Zabulón y Neftalí, los cuales también subieron a su encuentro.36Dijo entonces Gedeón a Ha-’Elohim: Si has de librar por mi mano a Israel, conforme has dicho,37he aquí que voy a poner este vellón de lana en el granero. Si cae el rocío sobre el vellón mientras todo el suelo queda seco, entonces sabré que librarás por mi mano a Israel, conforme has dicho.38Y sucedió así, pues cuando se levantó de madrugada, exprimió el vellón y sacó de él rocío hasta llenar un tazón de agua.39Dijo entonces Gedeón a Ha-’Elohim: No se encienda tu ira contra mí, y hablaré sólo una vez más. ¡Ruégote me permitas probar sólo esta vez con el vellón! Te ruego que quede seco el vellón, en tanto que en todo el suelo haya rocío.40Y ’Elohim lo hizo así aquella noche, y la sequedad estuvo solamente en el vellón, mientras que hubo rocío en toda la tierra.

Peccato d’Israele; oppressione di Madian
1Ma i figli d’Israele fecero ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore, e il Signore li diede nelle mani di Madian per sette anni.2La mano di Madian fu potente contro Israele; e, per la paura dei Madianiti, i figli d’Israele si fecero quelle grotte che sono nei monti, delle caverne e dei forti.3Quando Israele aveva seminato, i Madianiti con gli Amalechiti e con i popoli dell’oriente salivano contro di lui,4si accampavano contro gli Israeliti, distruggevano tutti i prodotti del paese fino a Gaza e non lasciavano in Israele né viveri, né pecore, né buoi, né asini.5Infatti salivano con le loro greggi e con le loro tende e arrivavano come una moltitudine di cavallette; essi e i loro cammelli erano innumerevoli e venivano nel paese per devastarlo.6Israele dunque fu ridotto in grande miseria a causa di Madian; e i figli d’Israele gridarono al Signore.7Quando i figli d’Israele gridarono al Signore a causa di Madian,8il Signore mandò ai figli d’Israele un profeta, che disse loro: «Così dice il Signore, il Dio d’Israele: “Io vi feci salire dall’Egitto e vi feci uscire dalla casa di schiavitù;9vi liberai dalla mano degli Egiziani e dalla mano di tutti quelli che vi opprimevano; li scacciai davanti a voi, vi diedi il loro paese10e vi dissi: ‘Io sono il Signore, il vostro Dio; non adorate gli dèi degli Amorei nel paese dei quali abitate’; ma voi non avete ascoltato la mia voce”».

11Poi venne l’angelo del Signore e si sedette sotto il terebinto di Ofra, che apparteneva a Ioas, abiezerita; e Gedeone, figlio di Ioas, trebbiava il grano nello strettoio per nasconderlo ai Madianiti.12L’angelo del Signore gli apparve e gli disse: «Il Signore è con te, o uomo forte e valoroso!»13Gedeone gli rispose: «Ahimè, mio signore, se il Signore è con noi, perché ci è accaduto tutto questo? Dove sono tutte quelle sue meraviglie che i nostri padri ci hanno narrate dicendo: “Il Signore non ci ha forse fatti uscire dall’Egitto?” Ma ora il Signore ci ha abbandonati e ci ha dati nelle mani di Madian».14Allora il Signore si rivolse a lui e gli disse: «Va’ con questa tua forza e salva Israele dalla mano di Madian; non sono io che ti mando?»15Egli rispose: «Ah, signore mio, con che salverò Israele? Ecco, la mia famiglia è la più povera di Manasse, e io sono il più piccolo nella casa di mio padre».16Il Signore gli disse: «Io sarò con te e tu sconfiggerai i Madianiti come se fossero un uomo solo».17Gedeone a lui: «Se ho trovato grazia agli occhi tuoi, dammi un segno che sei proprio tu che mi parli.18Ti prego, non te ne andare di qui prima che io torni da te, ti porti la mia offerta e te la metta davanti». Il Signore disse: «Aspetterò finché tu ritorni».19Allora Gedeone entrò in casa, preparò un capretto e, con un efa di farina, fece delle focacce azzime; mise la carne in un canestro, il brodo in una pentola, gli portò tutto sotto il terebinto e glielo offrì.20L’angelo di Dio gli disse: «Prendi la carne e le focacce azzime, mettile su questa roccia e versavi su il brodo». Egli fece così.21Allora l’angelo del Signore stese la punta del bastone che aveva in mano e toccò la carne e le focacce azzime; dalla roccia uscì un fuoco che consumò la carne e le focacce azzime; e l’angelo del Signore scomparve dalla sua vista.22Allora Gedeone vide che era l’angelo del Signore e disse: «Misero me, Signore, Dio, perché ho visto l’angelo del Signore faccia a faccia!»23Il Signore gli disse: «Sta’ in pace, non temere, non morirai!»24Allora Gedeone costruì un altare al Signore e lo chiamò Signore-Pace. Esso esiste anche al giorno d’oggi, a Ofra degli Abiezeriti.
Distruzione dell’altare di Baal
25Quella stessa notte il Signore gli disse: «Prendi il toro di tuo padre e il secondo toro di sette anni, demolisci l’altare di Baal che è di tuo padre, abbatti l’idolo che gli sta vicino26e costruisci un altare al Signore, al tuo Dio, in cima a questa roccia, disponendo ogni cosa con ordine; poi prendi il secondo toro e offrilo come olocausto usando il legno dell’idolo che avrai abbattuto.27Allora Gedeone prese dieci uomini tra i suoi servitori e fece come il Signore gli aveva detto; ma non osando farlo di giorno, per paura della casa di suo padre e della gente della città, lo fece di notte.28Quando la gente della città l’indomani mattina si alzò, ecco che l’altare di Baal era stato demolito, che l’idolo postovi accanto era abbattuto e che il secondo toro era offerto in olocausto sull’altare che era stato costruito.29Si dissero l’un l’altro: «Chi ha fatto questo?» Dopo essersi informati e dopo aver fatto delle ricerche, fu loro detto: «Gedeone, figlio di Ioas, ha fatto questo».30Allora la gente della città disse a Ioas: «Conduci fuori tuo figlio e sia messo a morte, perché ha demolito l’altare di Baal e ha abbattuto l’idolo che gli stava vicino».31Ioas rispose a tutti quelli che insorgevano contro di lui: «Volete difendere la causa di Baal? Volete venirgli in soccorso? Chi vorrà difendere la sua causa sarà messo a morte prima di domattina; se esso è un dio, difenda egli stesso la sua causa, visto che hanno demolito il suo altare».32Perciò quel giorno Gedeone fu chiamato Ierubbaal[1], perché si disse: «Difenda Baal la sua causa contro di lui, visto che egli ha demolito il suo altare».33Tutti i Madianiti, gli Amalechiti e i popoli dell’Oriente si radunarono, attraversarono il Giordano e si accamparono nella valle di Izreel.34Ma lo Spirito del Signore rivestì Gedeone, il quale suonò la tromba, e gli Abiezeriti furono convocati per seguirlo.35Egli mandò anche dei messaggeri in tutto Manasse, invitandolo a seguirlo; mandò dei messaggeri nelle tribù di Ascer, di Zabulon e di Neftali, e anche queste salirono a incontrarli.36Gedeone disse a Dio: «Se vuoi salvare Israele per mano mia, come hai detto,37ecco, io metterò un vello di lana sull’aia: se c’è della rugiada sul vello soltanto e tutto il terreno resta asciutto, io saprò che tu salverai Israele per mia mano come hai detto».38Così avvenne. La mattina dopo, Gedeone si alzò presto, strizzò il vello e ne spremette la rugiada: una coppa piena d’acqua.39Gedeone disse a Dio: «Non si accenda l’ira tua contro di me. Io non parlerò che questa volta soltanto. Permetti che io faccia un’altra prova con il vello: resti asciutto soltanto il vello e ci sia della rugiada su tutto il terreno».40Dio fece così quella notte: il vello soltanto restò asciutto e ci fu della rugiada su tutto il terreno.
