1Dann sprach Jesus zu der Volksmenge und zu seinen Jüngern: (Mk 12,38; Lk 20,45)2»Die Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer sind dazu eingesetzt, euch das Gesetz von Mose auszulegen.[1]3Richtet euch nach ihren Worten und tut alles, was sie euch sagen! Nehmt euch aber kein Beispiel an ihren Taten! Denn sie halten selbst nicht ein, was sie von den anderen verlangen.4Sie denken sich schwere, fast unerträgliche Forderungen aus und bürden sie den Menschen auf, doch sie selbst rühren keinen Finger, um diese Lasten zu tragen.5Mit allem, was sie tun, stellen sie sich zur Schau. Sie tragen besonders breite Gebetsriemen und an den Gewändern auffällig lange Quasten.6Bei den Festen wollen sie die Ehrenplätze bekommen, und auch in der Synagoge sitzen sie am liebsten in der ersten Reihe.7Es gefällt ihnen, wenn man sie auf der Straße ehrfurchtsvoll grüßt und ›Rabbi‹ nennt.8Lasst ihr euch nicht so anreden! Nur Gott ist euer Meister, ihr seid untereinander alle Geschwister.9Ihr sollt auch niemandem auf der Erde den Ehrentitel ›Vater‹ geben, denn nur einer ist euer Vater: Gott im Himmel.10Ihr sollt euch auch nicht Lehrer nennen lassen, weil ihr nur einen Lehrer habt: Christus.11Wer unter euch groß sein will, der soll allen anderen dienen.[2]12Alle, die sich selbst ehren, werden gedemütigt werden. Wer sich aber selbst erniedrigt, wird geehrt werden.«
Frommer Schein
13-14»Wehe euch, ihr Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer! Ihr Heuchler! Ihr versperrt anderen den Zugang zu Gottes himmlischem Reich. Denn ihr selbst geht nicht hinein, und die hineinwollen, hindert ihr auch noch daran.[3] (Lk 11,39)15Wehe euch, ihr Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer! Ihr Heuchler! Ihr reist in der Welt herum, um nur einen einzigen Nichtjuden dafür zu gewinnen, eure Gesetze anzuerkennen. Und wenn ihr einen gefunden habt, dann wird er durch euch zu einem Anwärter auf die Hölle, der euch an Bosheit noch übertrifft.16Wehe euch! Ihr wollt andere führen und seid doch selbst blind. So behauptet ihr: ›Beim Tempel Gottes schwören, das hat nichts zu bedeuten. Aber wer beim Gold im Tempel schwört, der muss seinen Eid halten.‹17Ihr blinden Narren! Was ist denn wichtiger: das Gold oder der Tempel, durch den das Gold erst geheiligt wird?18Ihr sagt: ›Ein Eid, beim Altar geschworen, hat keine Bedeutung. Wer aber bei dem Opfer auf dem Altar schwört, der muss sein Versprechen halten.‹19Ihr Verblendeten! Was ist denn wichtiger: die Gabe auf dem Altar oder der Altar, der die Gabe erst zum Opfer werden lässt?20Wer beim Altar schwört, der schwört bei allem, was darauf liegt.21Wer beim Tempel schwört, der ruft Gott zum Zeugen an, der dort wohnt.22Und wer beim Himmel schwört, der schwört bei dem Thron Gottes und damit bei Gott selbst, der auf diesem Thron sitzt.23Wehe euch, ihr Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer! Ihr Heuchler! Sogar von Küchenkräutern wie Minze, Dill und Kümmel gebt ihr Gott den zehnten Teil. Aber die viel wichtigeren Forderungen Gottes nach Gerechtigkeit, Barmherzigkeit und Treue[4] sind euch gleichgültig. Doch gerade darum geht es hier: das Wesentliche tun und das andere nicht unterlassen.24Ihr aber entfernt jede kleine Mücke aus eurem Getränk, doch ganze Kamele schluckt ihr bedenkenlos hinunter. Andere wollt ihr führen, dabei seid ihr selbst blind.25Wehe euch, ihr Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer! Ihr Heuchler! Ihr wascht eure Becher und Schüsseln von außen ab, doch gefüllt sind sie mit dem, was ihr anderen in eurer Gier genommen habt.26Ihr blinden Verführer, reinigt eure Becher erst einmal von innen, dann wird auch ihr Äußeres sauber sein.27Wehe euch, ihr Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer! Ihr Heuchler! Ihr seid wie die weiß getünchten Grabstätten[5]: Von außen erscheinen sie schön, aber innen ist alles voll stinkender Verwesung.28Genauso ist es bei euch: Ihr steht vor den Leuten als solche da, die Gottes Willen tun, aber in Wirklichkeit seid ihr voller Auflehnung und Heuchelei.29Wehe euch, ihr Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer! Ihr Heuchler! Den verstorbenen Propheten baut ihr Denkmäler, und die Gräber derer, die nach Gottes Willen lebten, schmückt ihr.30Dazu behauptet ihr noch: ›Wenn wir damals gelebt hätten, wir hätten die Propheten nicht umgebracht wie unsere Vorfahren.‹31Damit gebt ihr also selbst zu, dass ihr die Nachkommen der Prophetenmörder seid.32Ja, weiter so, macht das Maß eurer Väter nur voll!33Ihr Schlangenbrut! Wie wollt ihr der Hölle entrinnen, zu der Gott euch verurteilen wird?34Deshalb hört her: Ich werde euch Propheten, weise Männer und Lehrer schicken. Einige von ihnen werdet ihr töten, ja sogar kreuzigen. Andere werdet ihr in euren Synagogen auspeitschen und sie von Stadt zu Stadt verfolgen.35Darum werdet ihr auch zur Rechenschaft gezogen werden für den Mord an all jenen Menschen, die nach Gottes Willen gelebt haben, angefangen bei Abel bis zu Secharja, dem Sohn von Berechja, den ihr zwischen Tempel und Brandopferaltar ermordet habt.36Ich versichere euch: Das Strafgericht für all diese Schuld wird noch über diese Generation hereinbrechen.«
Warnung an Jerusalem
37»Jerusalem! O Jerusalem! Du tötest die Propheten und steinigst die Boten, die Gott zu dir schickt. Wie oft schon wollte ich deine Bewohner um mich sammeln, so wie eine Henne ihre Küken unter ihre Flügel nimmt! Aber ihr habt es nicht gewollt. (Lk 13,34)38Und nun? Euer Tempel wird von Gott verlassen sein und völlig zerstört werden.39Und ich sage euch: Mich werdet ihr erst dann wiedersehen, wenn ihr rufen werdet: ›Gepriesen sei, der im Auftrag des Herrn kommt!‹ « (Ps 118,26)

Gesù condanna gli scribi e i farisei
1Allora Gesù parlò alla folla e ai suoi discepoli,2dicendo: «Gli scribi e i farisei siedono sulla cattedra di Mosè.3Fate dunque e osservate tutte le cose che vi diranno, ma non fate secondo le loro opere; perché dicono e non fanno.4Infatti legano dei fardelli pesanti {e difficili da portare} e li mettono sulle spalle della gente; ma loro non li vogliono muovere neppure con un dito.5Tutte le loro opere le fanno per essere osservati dagli uomini; infatti allargano le loro filatterie[1] e allungano le frange[2] dei loro mantelli;6amano i primi posti nei conviti, i primi seggi nelle sinagoghe,7i saluti nelle piazze ed essere chiamati dalla gente: “Rabbì!”8Ma voi non vi fate chiamare “Rabbì”; perché uno solo è il vostro Maestro e voi siete tutti fratelli.9Non chiamate nessuno sulla terra vostro padre, perché uno solo è il Padre vostro, quello che è nei cieli.10Non vi fate chiamare guide, perché una sola è la vostra guida, il Cristo;11ma il maggiore tra di voi sia vostro servitore.12Chiunque si innalzerà sarà abbassato e chiunque si abbasserà sarà innalzato».13Ma guai a voi, scribi e farisei ipocriti, perché serrate il regno dei cieli davanti alla gente; poiché non vi entrate voi, né lasciate entrare quelli che cercano di entrare.14[Guai a voi, scribi e farisei ipocriti, perché divorate le case delle vedove e fate lunghe preghiere per mettervi in mostra; perciò riceverete una maggiore condanna.]15Guai a voi, scribi e farisei ipocriti, perché viaggiate per mare e per terra per fare un proselito; e quando lo avete fatto, lo rendete figlio della geenna il doppio di voi.16Guai a voi, guide cieche, che dite: “Se uno giura per il tempio, non importa; ma se giura per l’oro del tempio, resta obbligato”.17Stolti e ciechi! Che cosa è più grande: l’oro o il tempio che santifica l’oro?18E se uno, voi dite, giura per l’altare, non importa; ma se giura per l’offerta che c’è sopra, resta obbligato.19Ciechi! Che cosa è più grande: l’offerta o l’altare che santifica l’offerta?20Chi dunque giura per l’altare, giura per esso e per tutto quello che c’è sopra;21e chi giura per il tempio, giura per esso e per Colui che lo abita;22e chi giura per il cielo, giura per il trono di Dio e per Colui che vi siede sopra.23Guai a voi, scribi e farisei ipocriti, perché pagate la decima della menta, dell’aneto e del comino e trascurate le cose più importanti della legge: il giudizio, la misericordia e la fede. Queste sono le cose che bisognava fare, senza tralasciare le altre.24Guide cieche, che filtrate il moscerino[3] e inghiottite il cammello!25Guai a voi, scribi e farisei ipocriti, perché pulite l’esterno del bicchiere e del piatto, mentre dentro sono pieni di rapina e d’intemperanza.26Fariseo cieco, pulisci prima l’interno del bicchiere e del piatto, affinché anche l’esterno diventi pulito.27Guai a voi, scribi e farisei ipocriti, perché siete simili a sepolcri imbiancati, che appaiono belli di fuori, ma dentro sono pieni d’ossa di morti e d’ogni immondizia.28Così anche voi, di fuori sembrate giusti alla gente, ma dentro siete pieni d’ipocrisia e d’iniquità.29Guai a voi, scribi e farisei ipocriti, perché costruite i sepolcri ai profeti e adornate le tombe dei giusti30e dite: “Se fossimo vissuti ai tempi dei nostri padri, non saremmo stati loro complici nello spargere il sangue dei profeti!”31In tal modo voi testimoniate contro voi stessi, di essere figli di coloro che uccisero i profeti.32E colmate pure la misura dei vostri padri!33Serpenti, razza di vipere, come scamperete al giudizio della geenna?34Perciò ecco, io vi mando dei profeti, dei saggi e degli scribi; di questi, alcuni ne ucciderete e metterete in croce; altri ne flagellerete nelle vostre sinagoghe e li perseguiterete di città in città,35affinché ricada su di voi tutto il sangue giusto sparso sulla terra, dal sangue del giusto Abele, fino al sangue di Zaccaria, figlio di Berechia, che voi uccideste fra il tempio e l’altare.36Io vi dico in verità che tutto ciò ricadrà su questa generazione.
Il lamento di Gesù su Gerusalemme
37«Gerusalemme, Gerusalemme, che uccidi i profeti e lapidi quelli che ti sono mandati, quante volte ho voluto raccogliere i tuoi figli, come la chioccia raccoglie i suoi pulcini sotto le ali; e voi non avete voluto!38Ecco, la vostra casa sta per esservi lasciata deserta.39Infatti vi dico che da ora in avanti non mi vedrete più, finché non direte: “Benedetto colui che viene nel nome del Signore!”[4]».
