1De HERE zei tegen mij: ‘Koop een linnen riem en doe die om, maar zorg dat hij niet nat wordt.’2Ik kocht een riem en deed hem om mijn middel.3Toen sprak de HERE opnieuw tegen mij en zei:4‘Neem de riem mee naar de Eufraat en verberg hem daar in een grot tussen de rotsen.’5Dat deed ik, ik verborg de riem, zoals de HERE mij had opgedragen.6Een hele tijd later zei de HERE tegen mij: ‘Ga weer naar de rivier en haal de riem op.’7Ik deed dat en groef de riem op uit de grot waarin ik hem had verborgen. Maar hij was helemaal verrot en viel uit elkaar. Hij was onbruikbaar geworden!8-9Toen zei de HERE: ‘Dit laat zien hoe Ik de trots van Juda en Jeruzalem zal breken.10Dit slechte volk weigert naar Mij te luisteren, volgt zijn eigen zondige verlangens en vereert afgoden. Daarom zal het net als deze riem totaal onbruikbaar worden.11Zoals een riem rond de heupen van een man vastzit, zo zaten Juda en Israël aan Mij vast,’ zegt de HERE. ‘Zij waren mijn volk en deden mijn naam eer aan. Maar toen keerden zij Mij de rug toe.12Zeg hun dit: de HERE, de God van Israël zegt: al uw kruiken moeten vol zitten met wijn. En zij zullen antwoorden: natuurlijk, we weten zelf ook wel dat kruiken gevuld moeten zijn.13Zeg dan tegen hen: dit is wat de HERE u te zeggen heeft: Ik zal ieder die in dit land woont dronken maken, de koning die op de troon van David zit, de priesters, de profeten en heel Jeruzalem.14Ik zal vaders en zonen tegen elkaar aan stukken slaan,’ zegt de HERE. ‘Ik zal niet toelaten dat medelijden of genade hen van de totale verwoesting redden.15Och, was u maar niet zo trots en koppig! Dan zou u wel luisteren naar de woorden van de HERE.16Geef alle eer aan de HERE, uw God, voordat het te laat is. Voordat Hij een diepe, ondoordringbare duisternis op u laat neerdalen, zodat u struikelt op de donkere bergen. Als u dan zoekt naar licht, zult u alleen een vreselijke duisternis vinden.17Weigert u nog steeds te luisteren? Dan zal Ik in eenzaamheid huilen om uw trots. Mijn ogen zullen zich met tranen vullen, omdat het volk van de HERE in slavernij zal worden weggevoerd.18Zeg tegen de koning en de koningin-moeder: kom van uw tronen af, want uw prachtige kronen worden u afgenomen. Zij zijn niet langer van u.19De steden van de Negev tot aan de zuidkant van Jeruzalem hebben hun poorten voor de vijand gesloten. Zij moeten zichzelf verdedigen, want Jeruzalem kan niet helpen. Er woont helemaal niemand meer in Juda.20Kijk eens hoe de legers uit het noorden oprukken! Waar is uw kudde, Jeruzalem, de prachtige kudde waarover Ik u de verantwoordelijkheid heb gegeven en waarop u zo trots was?21Hoe zult u zich voelen als Ik uw bondgenoten als heersers over u aanstel? U zult kronkelen van pijn als een vrouw die een kind baart.22Als u zich afvraagt: “Waarom overkomt mij dit?” dan is dat om uw vele zonden, daarom zijn uw kleren afgerukt en wordt uw eer geschonden.23Kan de Ethiopiër zijn huidskleur veranderen? Kan een luipaard zijn vlekken laten verdwijnen? Net zomin kunt u, die zo gewend bent kwaad te doen, beginnen goed te doen.24-25Omdat u Mij uit uw gedachten hebt verbannen en hebt vertrouwd op valse goden, zal Ik u verspreiden als kaf, dat wordt weggeblazen door de woestijnwind. Dit is het lot dat u zichzelf op de hals hebt gehaald en dat Ik u heb toegewezen.26Ik zal zorgen dat uw naaktheid en schande door iedereen gezien worden.27Ik heb het allemaal gezien: uw overspel en uw begeren, uw ontrouw tegenover Mij en uw afschuwelijke afgoderij in de velden en op de heuvels. Pas op Jeruzalem! Hoelang duurt het nog voordat u weer rein wordt?’
1Thus says the Lord to me, “Go and buy a linen loincloth and put it around your waist, and do not dip it in water.” (Ex 28:39; Lev 16:4; Hand 21:11)2So I bought a loincloth according to the word of the Lord, and put it around my waist.3And the word of the Lord came to me a second time,4“Take the loincloth that you have bought, which is around your waist, and arise, go to the Euphrates and hide it there in a cleft of the rock.” (Jes 7:19; Jer 51:59; Jer 51:63)5So I went and hid it by the Euphrates, as the Lord commanded me.6And after many days the Lord said to me, “Arise, go to the Euphrates, and take from there the loincloth that I commanded you to hide there.” (Jer 13:1)7Then I went to the Euphrates, and dug, and I took the loincloth from the place where I had hidden it. And behold, the loincloth was spoiled; it was good for nothing. (Jer 13:1; Jer 18:4; Ez 15:4)8Then the word of the Lord came to me:9“Thus says the Lord: Even so will I spoil the pride of Judah and the great pride of Jerusalem. (Lev 26:19; Ps 137:1)10This evil people, who refuse to hear my words, who stubbornly follow their own heart and have gone after other gods to serve them and worship them, shall be like this loincloth, which is good for nothing. (Jer 3:17; Jer 13:7; Jer 16:11)11For as the loincloth clings to the waist of a man, so I made the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah cling to me, declares the Lord, that they might be for me a people, a name, a praise, and a glory, but they would not listen. The Jars Filled with Wine
12“You shall speak to them this word: ‘Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, “Every jar shall be filled with wine.”’ And they will say to you, ‘Do we not indeed know that every jar will be filled with wine?’ (Jer 48:12)13Then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord: Behold, I will fill with drunkenness all the inhabitants of this land: the kings who sit on David’s throne, the priests, the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem. Exile Threatened
15Hear and give ear; be not proud, for the Lord has spoken.16Give glory to the Lord your God before he brings darkness, before your feet stumble on the twilight mountains, and while you look for light he turns it into gloom and makes it deep darkness.
