Ninive war eine große Stadt vor Gott; man brauchte drei Tage, um sie zu durchqueren.4Jona begann, in die Stadt hineinzugehen; er ging einen Tag lang und rief: Noch vierzig Tage und Ninive ist zerstört!5Und die Leute von Ninive glaubten Gott. Sie riefen ein Fasten aus und alle, Groß und Klein, zogen Bußgewänder an. (1Kön 21,9; Mt 12,41; Lk 11,30)6Als die Nachricht davon den König von Ninive erreichte, stand er von seinem Thron auf, legte seinen Königsmantel ab, hüllte sich in ein Bußgewand und setzte sich in die Asche. (Jer 36,24; Hes 26,16)7Er ließ in Ninive ausrufen: Befehl des Königs und seiner Großen: Alle Menschen und Tiere, Rinder, Schafe und Ziegen, sollen nichts essen, nicht weiden und kein Wasser trinken. (1Mo 6,7)8Sie sollen sich in Bußgewänder hüllen, Menschen und Tiere. Sie sollen mit aller Kraft zu Gott rufen und jeder soll umkehren von seinem bösen Weg und von der Gewalt, die an seinen Händen klebt. (Jer 18,11; Hes 27,30; Jdt 4,10)9Wer weiß, vielleicht kehrt er um und es reut Gott und er lässt ab von seinem glühenden Zorn, sodass wir nicht zugrunde gehen. (Jer 18,8; Joe 2,14; Am 5,15)10Und Gott sah ihr Verhalten; er sah, dass sie umkehrten und sich von ihren bösen Taten abwandten. Da reute Gott das Unheil, das er ihnen angedroht hatte, und er tat es nicht. (1Mo 6,6; Jer 26,3)
1A message from the LORD came to Jonah a second time. The LORD said,2‘Go to the great city of Nineveh. Announce to its people the message I give you.’3Jonah obeyed the LORD. He went to Nineveh. It was a very large city. In fact, it took about three days to go through it.4Jonah began by going one whole day into the city. As he went, he announced, ‘In 40 days Nineveh will be destroyed.’5The people of Nineveh believed God’s warning. So they decided not to eat any food for a while. And all of them put on the rough clothing people wear when they’re sad. That’s what everyone did, from the least important of them to the most important.6Jonah’s warning reached the king of Nineveh. He got up from his throne. He took off his royal robes. He also dressed himself in the clothing of sadness. And then he sat down in the dust.7Here is the message he sent out to the people of Nineveh. ‘I and my nobles give this order. Don’t let people or animals taste anything. That includes your herds and flocks. People and animals must not eat or drink anything.8Let people and animals alike be covered with the clothing of sadness. All of you must call out to God with all your hearts. Stop doing what is evil. Don’t harm others.9Who knows? God might take pity on us. He might not be angry with us anymore. Then we won’t die.’10God saw what they did. He saw that they stopped doing what was evil. So he took pity on them. He didn’t destroy them as he had said he would.
