1 Ich sage aber: Solange der Erbe unmündig ist, unterscheidet er sich in keiner Hinsicht von einem Sklaven, obwohl er Herr ist über alles; 2 er steht unter Vormundschaft und sein Erbe wird verwaltet bis zu der Zeit, die sein Vater festgesetzt hat. 3 So waren auch wir, solange wir unmündig waren, Sklaven der Elementarmächte dieser Welt. (Kol 2,20) 4 Als aber die Zeit erfüllt war, sandte Gott seinen Sohn, geboren von einer Frau und dem Gesetz unterstellt, (Mk 1,15) 5 damit er die freikaufe, die unter dem Gesetz stehen, und damit wir die Sohnschaft erlangen. (Gal 3,13) 6 Weil ihr aber Söhne seid, sandte Gott den Geist seines Sohnes in unsere Herzen, den Geist, der ruft: Abba, Vater.^[1] (Mk 14,36; Röm 8,15; Gal 3,26) 7 Daher bist du nicht mehr Sklave, sondern Sohn; bist du aber Sohn, dann auch Erbe, Erbe durch Gott. Warnung vor Rückfall in die alte Knechtschaft

8 Doch einst, als ihr Gott noch nicht kanntet, wart ihr Sklaven der Götter, die in Wirklichkeit keine sind. (1Kor 12,2) 9 Wie aber könnt ihr jetzt, da ihr Gott erkannt habt, mehr noch von Gott erkannt worden seid, wieder zu den schwachen und armseligen Elementarmächten zurückkehren? Warum wollt ihr von Neuem ihre Sklaven werden? (Kol 2,20) 10 Warum achtet ihr so ängstlich auf Tage, Monate, bestimmte Zeiten und Jahre? 11 Ich fürchte, ich habe mich vergeblich um euch bemüht. 12 Werdet wie ich, denn auch ich bin wie ihr geworden, ich bitte euch darum, Brüder und Schwestern. Kein Unrecht habt ihr mir getan. 13 Ihr wisst aber, dass ich euch in der Schwachheit des Fleisches das Evangelium damals verkündet habe, 14 ihr aber habt auf meine Schwäche, die für euch eine Versuchung war, nicht mit Verachtung und Abscheu geantwortet, sondern mich wie einen Engel Gottes aufgenommen, wie Christus Jesus. 15 Wo also ist eure Seligpreisung? Ich bezeuge euch: Wäre es möglich gewesen, ihr hättet euch die Augen ausgerissen, um sie mir zu geben. 16 Bin ich also euer Feind geworden, weil ich euch die Wahrheit sage? 17 Jene Leute eifern um euch nicht in guter Absicht; sie wollen euch abtrünnig machen, damit ihr um sie eifert. (Gal 1,7; Gal 6,12) 18 Gut ist es, allezeit um das Gute zu eifern, und nicht nur, wenn ich bei euch bin, 19 meine Kinder, für die ich von Neuem Geburtswehen erleide, bis Christus in euch Gestalt annimmt. (1Kor 4,15) 20 Ich wollte, ich könnte jetzt bei euch sein und in anderem Ton mit euch reden; denn ihr macht mich ratlos.

Das Zeugnis der Schrift

21 Sagt mir, die ihr euch dem Gesetz unterstellen wollt, habt ihr niemals das Gesetz gehört? 22 Es steht doch geschrieben, dass Abraham zwei Söhne hatte, einen von der Sklavin, den andern von der Freien. (1Mo 16,15; 1Mo 21,2) 23 Der von der Sklavin wurde gemäß dem Fleisch gezeugt, der von der Freien aufgrund der Verheißung. (Röm 4,19; Röm 9,7) 24 Das ist bildlich gesprochen: Diese Frauen bedeuten zwei Bundesschlüsse. Der eine stammt vom Berg Sinai und gebiert zur Sklaverei; das ist Hagar, (2Mo 19,20) 25 denn Hagar steht für den Berg Sinai in Arabien. Ihr entspricht jedoch das jetzige Jerusalem, denn es dient mit seinen Kindern als Sklaven. 26 Aber das Jerusalem oben ist frei; und dieses ist unsre Mutter. (Hebr 12,22; Offb 21,2) 27 Denn geschrieben steht: Freu dich, du Unfruchtbare, die nie geboren hat, / brich in Jubel aus und jauchze, die du nie in Wehen lagst! / Denn viele Kinder hat die Einsame, / mehr als die den Mann hat. (Jes 54,1) 28 Ihr aber, Brüder und Schwestern, seid Kinder der Verheißung wie Isaak! 29 Doch wie damals der Sohn, der gemäß dem Fleisch gezeugt war, den verfolgte, der gemäß dem Geist gezeugt war, so geschieht es auch jetzt. 30 In der Schrift aber heißt es: Stoß die Sklavin und ihren Sohn hinaus! Denn der Sohn der Sklavin soll nicht Erbe sein zusammen mit dem Sohn der Freien. (1Mo 21,10) 31 Daraus folgt also, meine Brüder und Schwestern, dass wir nicht Kinder der Sklavin sind, sondern Kinder der Freien.

1 Here is what I have been saying. As long as your own children are young, they are no different from slaves in your house. They are no different, even though they will own all the property. 2 People are in charge of the property. And other people are in charge of the children. The children remain under their care until they become adults. At that time their fathers give them the property. 3 It is the same with us. When we were children, we were slaves to the basic spiritual powers of the world. 4 But then the chosen time came. God sent his Son. A woman gave birth to him. He was born under the authority of the law. 5 He came to set free those who were under the authority of the law. He wanted us to be adopted as children with all the rights children have. 6 Because you are his children, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts. He is the Holy Spirit. By his power we call God Abba. Abba means Father. 7 So you aren’t a slave any longer. You are God’s child. Because you are his child, God gives you the rights of those who are his children.

Paul’s concern for the believers in Galatia

8 At one time you didn’t know God. You were slaves to gods that are really not gods at all. 9 But now you know God. Even better, God knows you. So why are you turning back to those weak and worthless powers? Do you want to be slaves to them all over again? 10 You are observing special days and months and seasons and years! 11 I am afraid for you. I am afraid that somehow I have wasted my efforts on you. 12 I make my appeal to you, brothers and sisters. I’m asking you to become like me. After all, I became like you. You didn’t do anything wrong to me. 13 Remember when I first preached the good news to you? Remember I did that because I was ill. 14 And my illness was hard on you. But you weren’t mean to me. You didn’t make fun of me. Instead, you welcomed me as if I were an angel of God. You welcomed me as if I were Christ Jesus himself. 15 So why aren’t you treating me the same way now? Suppose you could have torn out your own eyes and given them to me. Then you would have done it. I am a witness to this. 16 Have I become your enemy now by telling you the truth? 17 Those people are trying hard to win you over. But it is not for your good. They want to take you away from us. They want you to commit yourselves to them. 18 It is fine to be committed to something, if the purpose is good. And you shouldn’t be committed only when I am with you. You should always be committed. 19 My dear children, I am in pain for you, just as I was when we first met. I have pain like a woman giving birth. And my pain will continue until Christ makes you like himself. 20 I wish I could be with you now. I wish I could change my tone of voice. As it is, I don’t understand you.

Hagar and Sarah

21 You who want to be under the authority of the law, tell me something. Don’t you know what the law says? 22 It is written that Abraham had two sons. The slave woman gave birth to one of them. The free woman gave birth to the other one. 23 Abraham’s son by the slave woman was born in the usual way. But his son by the free woman was born because of God’s promise. 24 These things are examples. The two women stand for two covenants. One covenant comes from Mount Sinai. It gives birth to children who are going to be slaves. It is Hagar. 25 Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia. She stands for the present city of Jerusalem. That’s because she and her children are slaves. 26 But the Jerusalem that is above is free. She is our mother. 27 It is written, ‘Be glad, woman, you who have never had children. Shout for joy and cry out loud, you who have never had labour pains. The woman who is all alone has more children than the woman who has a husband.’ (Jes 54,1) 28 Brothers and sisters, you are children because of God’s promise just as Isaac was. 29 At that time, the son born in the usual way tried to hurt the other son. The other son was born by the power of the Holy Spirit. It is the same now. 30 But what does Scripture say? ‘Get rid of the slave woman. Get rid of her son. The slave woman’s son will never have a share of the family’s property. He’ll never share it with the free woman’s son.’ (1Mo 21,10) 31 Brothers and sisters, we are not the slave woman’s children. We are the free woman’s children.
