1Und es geschah, als Jesus die Unterweisung der zwölf Jünger beendet hatte, zog er weiter, um in den Städten zu lehren und zu predigen.
Die Frage des Täufers und seine Bedeutung
2Johannes hörte im Gefängnis von den Taten des Christus. Da schickte er seine Jünger zu ihm (Mt 14,3; Lk 7,18)3und ließ ihn fragen: Bist du der, der kommen soll, oder sollen wir auf einen anderen warten?4Jesus antwortete ihnen: Geht und berichtet Johannes, was ihr hört und seht:5Blinde sehen wieder und Lahme gehen; Aussätzige werden rein und Taube hören; Tote stehen auf und Armen wird das Evangelium verkündet. (Jes 26,19; Jes 29,18; Jes 35,5; Jes 61,1)6Selig ist, wer an mir keinen Anstoß nimmt.7Als sie gegangen waren, begann Jesus zu der Menge über Johannes zu reden: Was habt ihr denn sehen wollen, als ihr in die Wüste hinausgegangen seid? Ein Schilfrohr, das im Wind schwankt?8Oder was habt ihr sehen wollen, als ihr hinausgegangen seid? Einen Mann in feiner Kleidung? Siehe, die fein gekleidet sind, findet man in den Palästen der Könige.9Oder wozu seid ihr hinausgegangen? Um einen Propheten zu sehen? Ja, ich sage euch: sogar mehr als einen Propheten.10Dieser ist es, von dem geschrieben steht:
Siehe, ich sende meinen Boten vor dir her, / der deinen Weg vor dir bahnen wird. (2Mo 23,20; Mal 3,1; Mk 1,2; Lk 1,76)11Amen, ich sage euch: Unter den von einer Frau Geborenen ist kein Größerer aufgetreten als Johannes der Täufer; doch der Kleinste im Himmelreich ist größer als er.12Seit den Tagen Johannes des Täufers bis heute wird dem Himmelreich Gewalt angetan und Gewalttätige reißen es an sich. Sie gleicht Kindern, die auf den Marktplätzen sitzen und anderen zurufen:17Wir haben für euch auf der Flöte gespielt und ihr habt nicht getanzt; wir haben die Totenklage angestimmt und ihr habt euch nicht an die Brust geschlagen.18Denn Johannes ist gekommen, er isst nicht und trinkt nicht und sie sagen: Er hat einen Dämon. (Mt 9,14)19Der Menschensohn ist gekommen, er isst und trinkt und sie sagen: Siehe, ein Fresser und Säufer, ein Freund der Zöllner und Sünder! Und doch hat die Weisheit durch ihre Taten Recht bekommen.
Das Wehe-Wort Jesu über die galiläischen Städte
20Dann begann er den Städten, in denen er die meisten Machttaten getan hatte, Vorwürfe zu machen, weil sie nicht Buße getan hatten: (Lk 10,12)21Weh dir, Chorazin! Weh dir, Betsaida! Denn wenn in Tyrus und Sidon die Machttaten geschehen wären, die bei euch geschehen sind - längst schon wären sie in Sack und Asche umgekehrt. (Est 4,1; Joe 4,4)22Das sage ich euch: Tyrus und Sidon wird es am Tag des Gerichts erträglicher ergehen als euch.23Und du, Kafarnaum, wirst du etwa bis zum Himmel erhoben werden? Bis zur Unterwelt wirst du hinabsteigen. Wenn in Sodom die Machttaten geschehen wären, die bei dir geschehen sind, dann stünde es noch heute. Der Lobpreis Jesu
25In jener Zeit sprach Jesus: Ich preise dich, Vater, Herr des Himmels und der Erde, weil du das vor den Weisen und Klugen verborgen und es den Unmündigen offenbart hast. Woe to Unrepentant Cities

For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. Gesù rimprovera le città impenitenti
20Allora egli prese a rimproverare le città nelle quali era stata fatta la maggior parte delle sue opere potenti, perché non si erano ravvedute:21«Guai a te, Corazin! Guai a te, Betsaida! perché se in Tiro e Sidone fossero state fatte le opere potenti compiute tra di voi, già da molto tempo si sarebbero pentite, con sacco e cenere[5].22Perciò vi dichiaro che nel giorno del giudizio la sorte di Tiro e di Sidone sarà più tollerabile della vostra.23E tu, o Capernaum, sarai forse innalzata fino al cielo? No, tu scenderai fino all’Ades[6]. Perché se in Sodoma fossero state fatte le opere potenti compiute in te, essa sarebbe durata fino ad oggi.24Perciò vi dichiaro che nel giorno del giudizio la sorte del paese di Sodoma sarà più tollerabile della tua».
La relazione personale del discepolo con il suo Signore
25In quel tempo Gesù prese a dire: «Io ti rendo lode, o Padre, Signore del cielo e della terra, perché hai nascosto queste cose ai sapienti e agli intelligenti, e le hai rivelate ai piccoli.26Sì, Padre, perché così ti è piaciuto.27Ogni cosa mi è stata data in mano dal Padre mio; e nessuno conosce il Figlio, se non il Padre; e nessuno conosce il Padre, se non il Figlio, e colui al quale il Figlio voglia rivelarlo.28Venite a me, voi tutti che siete affaticati e oppressi, e io vi darò riposo.29Prendete su di voi il mio giogo e imparate da me, perché io sono mansueto e umile di cuore; e voi troverete riposo per le anime vostre[7];30poiché il mio giogo è dolce e il mio carico è leggero».
