1But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. (Mt 28,1; Mk 16,1; Lk 23,56; Joh 20,1)2And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, (Mt 27,60; Mk 15,46)3but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.4While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. (Joh 20,12; Apg 1,10; Apg 10,30)5And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? (Lk 24,37)6He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, (Mt 17,22; Mk 9,30; Lk 9,22; Lk 9,44; Lk 24,44)7that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.” (Mt 20,19; Lk 9,22; Lk 13,33; Lk 24,6)8And they remembered his words, (Joh 2,22; Joh 12,1)9and returning from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. (Joh 20,18)10Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles, (Mt 27,56; Mk 15,40; Lk 8,3)11but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them. (Mk 16,11; Mk 16,16)12But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home marveling at what had happened. (Joh 19,40; Joh 20,3)
On the Road to Emmaus
13That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles[1] from Jerusalem, (Mk 16,12)14and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened.15While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them.16But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. (Lk 9,45; Lk 18,34; Lk 24,31; Joh 20,14; Joh 21,4)17And he said to them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad.18Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”19And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, (Mt 21,11; Apg 2,22; Apg 7,22)20and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. (Lk 23,13; Lk 23,35; Joh 3,1; Joh 7,26; Joh 7,48; Joh 12,42; Apg 2,23; Apg 3,17; Apg 4,5; Apg 4,8; Apg 5,30; Apg 13,27; 1Kor 2,8; 1Thess 2,15)21But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened. (Lk 1,68; Lk 24,7; 1Petr 1,18)22Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning, (Lk 24,1)23and when they did not find his body, they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. (Lk 24,3; Lk 24,4; Lk 24,9)24Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.” (Lk 24,12; Joh 20,3)25And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!26Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” (Mt 1,17; Lk 9,26; Lk 24,7; Lk 24,44; Lk 24,46; Apg 3,18; Hebr 2,10; Hebr 12,2; 1Petr 1,11)27And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. (1Mo 3,15; 1Mo 12,3; 1Mo 22,18; 4Mo 21,9; 4Mo 24,17; 2Sam 7,12; Jes 7,14; Jes 9,6; Jes 50,6; Jes 52,13; Jes 61,1; Jer 23,5; Dan 7,13; Dan 9,24; Mi 5,2; Sach 6,12; Sach 9,9; Sach 12,10; Sach 13,7; Joh 1,45; Joh 5,46; Apg 8,35; Apg 13,27)28So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were going farther, (Mk 6,48)29but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them. (Lk 9,12)30When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. (Mt 14,19)31And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight. (Lk 4,30; Lk 24,16)32They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?” (Ps 39,3; Lk 24,45)33And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, (Mk 16,13; Apg 1,14; Apg 17,3)34saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!” (1Kor 15,5)35Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread. (Lk 24,30; Apg 2,42)
Jesus Appears to His Disciples
36As they were talking about these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!” (Mk 16,14; Joh 20,19)37But they were startled and frightened and thought they saw a spirit. (Mt 14,26; Mk 6,49; Lk 21,9; Lk 24,5)38And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts?39See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” (Joh 20,27; 1Joh 1,1)40And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. (Joh 20,20)41And while they still disbelieved for joy and were marveling, he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” (1Mo 45,26; Joh 21,5; Apg 12,14)42They gave him a piece of broiled fish,[2]43and he took it and ate before them.44Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” (Lk 24,6; Lk 24,27)45Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, (Hi 33,16; Ps 119,18; Lk 24,32; Apg 16,14; 1Joh 5,20)46and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, (Mt 26,24; Lk 24,7; Lk 24,26; Joh 20,9)47and that repentance for[3] the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. (1Mo 12,3; Ps 22,27; Jes 2,2; Jes 49,6; Hos 2,23; Mal 1,11; Mt 28,19; Lk 2,32; Apg 2,38; Apg 4,12; Apg 5,31; Apg 10,37; Gal 3,8)48You are witnesses of these things. (Joh 15,27; Apg 1,8; Apg 1,22; Apg 2,32; Apg 3,15; Apg 5,32; Apg 10,39; Apg 10,41; Apg 13,31; 1Kor 15,15; 1Petr 5,1)49And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.” (Hi 29,14; Ps 132,9; Jes 32,15; Lk 1,78; Joh 14,26; Apg 1,4; Apg 1,8; Apg 2,16; Apg 2,33; Eph 1,13)
1On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb.2They found the stone rolled away from the tomb,3but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.4While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them.5In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, ‘Why do you look for the living among the dead?6He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee:7“The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.” ’8Then they remembered his words.9When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others.10It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles.11But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense.12Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.
On the road to Emmaus
13Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles[1] from Jerusalem.14They were talking with each other about everything that had happened.15As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them;16but they were kept from recognising him.17He asked them, ‘What are you discussing together as you walk along?’ They stood still, their faces downcast.18One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, ‘Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?’19‘What things?’ he asked. ‘About Jesus of Nazareth,’ they replied. ‘He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people.20The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him;21but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. Jesus appears to the disciples
36While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’37They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost.38He said to them, ‘Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds?39Look at my hands and my feet. The ascension of Jesus
50When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them.51While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven.52Then they worshipped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy.53And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.
1It was very early in the morning on the first day of the week. The women took the spices they had prepared. Then they went to the tomb.2They found the stone rolled away from it.3When they entered the tomb, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.4They were wondering about this. 13That same day two of Jesus’ followers were going to a village called Emmaus. He said to Jesus, ‘Are you the only person visiting Jerusalem who doesn’t know? Don’t you know about the things that have happened there in the last few days?’19‘What things?’ Jesus asked. ‘About Jesus of Nazareth,’ they replied. ‘He was a prophet. He was powerful in what he said and did in the sight of God and all the people.20The chief priests and our rulers handed Jesus over to be sentenced to death. They nailed him to a cross.21But we had hoped that he was the one who was going to set Israel free. Also, it is the third day since all this happened.22Some of our women amazed us too. Early this morning they went to the tomb.23But they didn’t find his body. So they came and told us what they had seen. They saw angels, who said Jesus was alive.24Then some of our friends went to the tomb. They saw it was empty, just as the women had said. They didn’t see Jesus’ body there.’25Jesus said to them, ‘How foolish you are! How long it takes you to believe all that the prophets said!26Didn’t the Messiah have to suffer these things and then receive his glory?’27Jesus explained to them what was said about himself in all the Scriptures. He began with Moses and all the Prophets.28They approached the village where they were going. Jesus kept walking as if he were going further.29But they tried hard to keep him from leaving. They said, ‘Stay with us. It is nearly evening. The day is almost over.’ So he went in to stay with them.30He joined them at the table. Then he took bread and gave thanks. He broke it and began to give it to them.31Their eyes were opened, and they recognised him. But then he disappeared from their sight.32They said to each other, ‘He explained to us what the Scriptures meant. Weren’t we excited as he talked with us on the road?’33They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the 11 disciples and those with them. They were all gathered together.34They were saying, ‘It’s true! The Lord has risen! He has appeared to Simon!’35Then the two of them told what had happened to them on the way. They told how they had recognised Jesus when he broke the bread.
Jesus appears to the disciples
36The disciples were still talking about this when Jesus himself suddenly stood among them. He said, ‘May you have peace!’37They were surprised and terrified. They thought they were seeing a ghost.38Jesus said to them, ‘Why are you troubled? Why do you have doubts in your minds?39Look at my hands and my feet. It’s really me! Touch me and see. A ghost does not have a body or bones. But you can see that I do.’40After he said that, he showed them his hands and feet.41But they still did not believe it. They were amazed and filled with joy. So Jesus asked them, ‘Do you have anything here to eat?’42They gave him a piece of cooked fish.43He took it and ate it in front of them.44Jesus said to them, ‘This is what I told you while I was still with you. Everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms must come true.’45Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.46He told them, ‘This is what is written. The Messiah will suffer. He will rise from the dead on the third day.47His followers will preach in his name. They will tell others to turn away from their sins and be forgiven. People from every nation will hear it, beginning at Jerusalem.48You have seen these things with your own eyes.49I am going to send you what my Father has promised. But for now, stay in the city. Stay there until you have received power from heaven.’
Jesus is taken up into heaven
50Jesus led his disciples out to the area near Bethany. Then he lifted up his hands and blessed them.51While he was blessing them, he left them. He was taken up into heaven.52Then they worshipped him. With great joy, they returned to Jerusalem.53Every day they went to the temple, praising God.
