Lukas 21

1 Jesus[1] looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box, (2Kön 12,9; Mk 12,41; Joh 8,20)2 and he saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins.[2] (Lk 12,59)3 And he said, “Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them. (2Kor 8,2; 2Kor 8,12)4 For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.” (Lk 8,43; Phil 4,11)5 And while some were speaking of the temple, how it was adorned with noble stones and offerings, he said, (Mt 24,1; Mk 13,1)6 “As for these things that you see, the days will come when there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.” (Lk 17,22; Lk 19,43)7 And they asked him, “Teacher, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?” (Apg 1,6)8 And he said, “See that you are not led astray. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!’ and, ‘The time is at hand!’ Do not go after them. (Jer 14,14; Jer 29,8; Mt 3,2; Mt 4,17; Mk 1,15; Joh 8,24; Eph 5,6; Kol 2,8; 2Thess 2,3; 1Joh 2,18; 1Joh 3,7)9 And when you hear of wars and tumults, do not be terrified, for these things must first take place, but the end will not be at once.” (Lk 24,37; Offb 1,1)10 Then he said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. (2Chr 15,6; Jes 19,2; Offb 6,4)11 There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven. (Jes 19,17; Mt 16,1; Mk 8,11; Lk 11,16; Lk 21,25; Apg 11,28; Offb 6,8; Offb 6,12; Offb 12,1; Offb 12,3; Offb 13,13; Offb 15,1)12 But before all this they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors for my name’s sake. (Mt 10,17; Apg 4,3; Apg 5,18; Apg 8,3; Apg 12,4; Apg 16,19; Apg 16,24; Apg 17,6; Apg 18,12; Apg 22,19; Apg 24,1; Apg 24,27; Apg 25,6; Apg 26,11; Apg 27,24; 2Kor 11,23)13 This will be your opportunity to bear witness. (Phil 1,13; Phil 1,19)14 Settle it therefore in your minds not to meditate beforehand how to answer, (Lk 12,11)15 for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict. (2Mo 4,12; Jer 1,9; Apg 4,14; Apg 6,10)16 You will be delivered up even by parents and brothers[3] and relatives and friends, and some of you they will put to death. (Mt 10,35; Lk 12,53)17 You will be hated by all for my name’s sake. (Lk 6,22; Joh 15,18)18 But not a hair of your head will perish. (1Sam 14,45; Lk 21,16; Joh 10,28)19 By your endurance you will gain your lives. (Mt 10,22; Mt 24,13; Röm 5,3; Hebr 10,36)20 “But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near. (Dan 9,27; Lk 19,43)21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and let those who are inside the city depart, and let not those who are out in the country enter it,22 for these are days of vengeance, to fulfill all that is written. (Jes 34,8; Jes 63,4; Hos 9,7; Mt 1,22; Lk 18,7)23 Alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! For there will be great distress upon the earth and wrath against this people. (Lk 23,29; 1Thess 2,16)24 They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive among all nations, and Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. (5Mo 28,64; Ps 79,1; Jes 63,3; Jes 63,18; Dan 8,13; Dan 12,7; Sach 12,3; Röm 11,25; Offb 11,2)25 “And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves, (Ps 65,7; Jes 13,10; Jes 14,12; Jes 24,23; Jes 34,4; Hes 32,7; Joe 2,10; Joe 2,31; Joe 3,15; Am 5,20; Am 8,9; Zef 1,15; Apg 2,20; Offb 6,12; Offb 6,13; Offb 8,12)26 people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken. (Jes 34,4)27 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. (Dan 7,13; Mt 25,31; Mt 26,64; Mk 9,1)28 Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” (Hi 10,15; Lk 1,68; Röm 8,23; Röm 13,11; Eph 4,30)29 And he told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree, and all the trees.30 As soon as they come out in leaf, you see for yourselves and know that the summer is already near. (Mt 16,3; Lk 12,57)31 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near.32 Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all has taken place. (Lk 9,27)33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. (Ps 102,26; Ps 119,89; Jes 40,8; Jes 51,6; Mt 5,18; Hebr 12,27; 1Petr 1,23; 1Petr 1,25; 2Petr 3,10)34 “But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap. (Pred 9,12; Jes 24,17; Mt 13,22; Lk 12,40; Röm 13,13; 1Thess 5,3; 1Thess 5,6; Jak 5,5; 1Petr 4,7)35 For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth.36 But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.” (Hos 12,4; Mt 25,13; Mt 26,41; Mk 14,34; Lk 12,37; Lk 18,1; Apg 20,31; 1Kor 16,13; 1Thess 5,6; 1Petr 5,8; Offb 6,17)37 And every day he was teaching in the temple, but at night he went out and lodged on the mount called Olivet. (Mt 21,1; Mt 21,17; Mt 26,55; Mk 11,19; Lk 22,39; Joh 8,1; Joh 18,2)38 And early in the morning all the people came to him in the temple to hear him. (Lk 21,37)

1 As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury.2 He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins.3 ‘Truly I tell you,’ he said, ‘this poor widow has put in more than all the others.4 All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.’5 Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said,6 ‘As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down.’7 ‘Teacher,’ they asked, ‘when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?’8 He replied: ‘Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, “I am he,” and, “The time is near.” Do not follow them.9 When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.’10 Then he said to them: ‘Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.11 There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.12 ‘But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and put you in prison, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name.13 And so you will bear testimony to me.14 But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves.15 For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.16 You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death.17 Everyone will hate you because of me.18 But not a hair of your head will perish.19 Stand firm, and you will win life.20 ‘When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near.21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city.22 For this is the time of punishment in fulfilment of all that has been written.23 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people.24 They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.25 ‘There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea.26 People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.27 At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.28 When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.’29 He told them this parable: ‘Look at the fig-tree and all the trees.30 When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near.31 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near.32 ‘Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.34 ‘Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap.35 For it will come on all those who live on the face of the whole earth.36 Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.’37 Each day Jesus was teaching at the temple, and each evening he went out to spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives,38 and all the people came early in the morning to hear him at the temple.

1 As Jesus looked up, he saw rich people putting their gifts into the temple offering boxes.2 He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins.3 ‘What I’m about to tell you is true,’ Jesus said. ‘That poor widow has put in more than all the others.4 All these other people gave a lot because they are rich. But even though she is poor, she put in everything. She had nothing left to live on.’5 Some of Jesus’ disciples were talking about the temple. They spoke about how it was decorated with beautiful stones and with gifts that honoured God. But Jesus asked,6 ‘Do you see all this? The time will come when not one stone will be left on top of another. Every stone will be thrown down.’7 ‘Teacher’, they asked, ‘when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?’8 Jesus replied, ‘Keep watch! Be careful that you are not fooled. Many will come in my name. They will claim, “I am he!” And they will say, “The time is near!” Do not follow them.9 Do not be afraid when you hear about wars and about fighting against rulers. Those things must happen first. But the end will not come right away.’10 Then Jesus said to them, ‘Nation will fight against nation. Kingdom will fight against kingdom.11 In many places there will be powerful earthquakes. People will go hungry. There will be terrible diseases. Things will happen that will make people afraid. There will be great and miraculous signs from heaven.12 ‘But before all this, people will arrest you and treat you badly. They will hand you over to synagogues and put you in prison. You will be brought to kings and governors. All this will happen to you because of my name.13 And so you will be witnesses about me.14 But make up your mind not to worry in advance about how to stand up for yourselves.15 I will give you words of wisdom. None of your enemies will be able to withstand them or prove them wrong.16 Even your parents, brothers, sisters, relatives and friends will hand you over to the authorities. The authorities will put some of you to death.17 Everyone will hate you because of me.18 But not a hair on your head will be harmed.19 Remain strong in the faith, and you will receive eternal life.20 ‘A time is coming when you will see armies surround Jerusalem. Then you will know that it will soon be destroyed.21 Those who are in Judea should then escape to the mountains. Those in the city should get out. Those in the country should not enter the city.22 This is the time when God will punish Jerusalem. Everything will come true, just as it has been written.23 How awful it will be in those days for pregnant women! How awful for nursing mothers! There will be terrible suffering in the land. There will be great anger against those people.24 Some will be killed by the sword. Others will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be taken over by Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles come to an end.25 ‘There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. The nations of the earth will be in terrible pain. They will be puzzled by the roaring and tossing of the sea.26 Terror will make people faint. They will be worried about what is happening in the world. The sun, moon and stars will be shaken from their places.27 At that time people will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud. He will come with power and great glory.28 When these things begin to take place, stand up. Hold your head up with joy and hope. The time when you will be set free will be very close.’29 Jesus told them a story. ‘Look at the fig tree and all the trees,’ he said.30 ‘When you see leaves appear on the branches, you know that summer is near.31 In the same way, when you see these things happening, you will know that God’s kingdom is near.32 ‘What I’m about to tell you is true. The people living now will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.33 Heaven and earth will pass away. But my words will never pass away.34 ‘Be careful. If you aren’t, your hearts will be loaded down with wasteful living, drunkenness and the worries of life. Then the day the Son of Man returns will close on you like a trap. It will happen suddenly.35 That day will come on every person who lives on the whole earth.36 Always keep watching. Pray that you will be able to escape all that is about to happen. Also, pray that you will not be judged guilty when the Son of Man comes.’37 Each day Jesus taught at the temple. And each evening he went to spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives.38 All the people came to the temple early in the morning. They wanted to hear Jesus speak.
