(Mt 24,28)
1And he said to his disciples, “Temptations to sin[1] are sure to come, but woe to the one through whom they come! (Mt 13,41; Mt 18,7; Lk 22,22)2It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were cast into the sea than that he should cause one of these little ones to sin.[2] (Mt 18,6; Mk 9,42)3Pay attention to yourselves! If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him, (3Mo 19,17; Mt 6,14; Mt 18,15; Mt 18,21)4and if he sins against you seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive him.” (Mt 18,21)
Increase Our Faith
5The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” (Mk 6,30; Mk 9,24)6And the Lord said, “If you had faith like a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you. (Mt 13,31; Mt 17,20; Lk 19,4)
Unworthy Servants
7“Will any one of you who has a servant[3] plowing or keeping sheep say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come at once and recline at table’?8Will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare supper for me, and dress properly,[4] and serve me while I eat and drink, and afterward you will eat and drink’? (Lk 12,35; Lk 12,37; Joh 13,4)9Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded?10So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, ‘We are unworthy servants;[5] we have only done what was our duty.’” (Hi 22,2; Hi 35,7; Mt 25,30; Röm 11,35)
Jesus Cleanses Ten Lepers
11On the way to Jerusalem he was passing along between Samaria and Galilee. (Mt 19,1; Lk 9,51; Joh 4,3)12And as he entered a village, he was met by ten lepers,[6] who stood at a distance (3Mo 13,45)13and lifted up their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.”14When he saw them he said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went they were cleansed. (3Mo 13,2; Mt 8,4; Lk 5,14)15Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; (Lk 13,13)16and he fell on his face at Jesus’ feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. (4Mo 16,22; Mt 10,5; Mt 26,39; Lk 5,12)17Then Jesus answered, “Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? (Lk 17,12)18Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?” (Jes 66,5; Joh 9,24)19And he said to him, “Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well.”[7] (Mk 10,52)
The Coming of the Kingdom
20Being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, he answered them, “The kingdom of God is not coming in ways that can be observed, (Lk 12,39; Lk 19,11; Apg 1,6)21nor will they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or ‘There!’ for behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you.”[8] (Lk 17,23)22And he said to the disciples, “The days are coming when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. (Am 5,18; Mt 9,15; Mk 2,20; Lk 5,35; Lk 19,43; Lk 21,6; Lk 23,29; Joh 4,21; Joh 8,56)23And they will say to you, ‘Look, there!’ or ‘Look, here!’ Do not go out or follow them. (Mt 24,23; Mk 13,21; Lk 17,21; Lk 21,8)24For as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so will the Son of Man be in his day.[9] (Mt 24,27; 1Kor 1,8)25But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. (Mt 16,21; Mt 17,22; Mk 8,31; Lk 13,33)26Just as it was in the days of Noah, so will it be in the days of the Son of Man. (1Mo 6,5; 1Mo 7,7; Mt 24,37; 1Thess 5,3; Hebr 11,7; 1Petr 3,20; 2Petr 2,5)27They were eating and drinking and marrying and being given in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. (Mt 24,38)28Likewise, just as it was in the days of Lot—they were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building, (2Petr 2,7)29but on the day when Lot went out from Sodom, fire and sulfur rained from heaven and destroyed them all— (1Mo 19,16; 1Mo 19,24; 2Petr 2,6)30so will it be on the day when the Son of Man is revealed. (Mt 16,27; Mt 24,44; 1Kor 1,7; 2Thess 1,7; 1Petr 1,7; 1Petr 1,13; 1Petr 4,13)31On that day, let the one who is on the housetop, with his goods in the house, not come down to take them away, and likewise let the one who is in the field not turn back. (Mt 24,17; Mk 13,15; Lk 5,19; Lk 21,21)32Remember Lot’s wife. (1Mo 19,26)33Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will keep it. (Mt 10,39; Apg 7,19)34I tell you, in that night there will be two in one bed. One will be taken and the other left.35There will be two women grinding together. One will be taken and the other left.”[10] (2Mo 11,5; Jes 47,2; Mt 24,41)37And they said to him, “Where, Lord?” He said to them, “Where the corpse[11] is, there the vultures[12] will gather.” (Hi 39,30; Mt 24,28)
1Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Things that cause people to stumble are bound to come, but woe to anyone through whom they come.2It would be better for them to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied round their neck than to cause one of these little ones to stumble.3So watch yourselves. ‘If your brother or sister[1] sins against you, rebuke them; and if they repent, forgive them.4Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying “I repent,” you must forgive them.’5The apostles said to the Lord, ‘Increase our faith!’6He replied, ‘If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, “Be uprooted and planted in the sea,” and it will obey you.7‘Suppose one of you has a servant ploughing or looking after the sheep. Will he say to the servant when he comes in from the field, “Come along now and sit down to eat”?8Won’t he rather say, “Prepare my supper, get yourself ready and wait on me while I eat and drink; after that you may eat and drink”?9Will he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do?10So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, “We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.” ’
Jesus heals ten men with leprosy
11Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus travelled along the border between Samaria and Galilee.12As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy[2] met him. They stood at a distance13and called out in a loud voice, ‘Jesus, Master, have pity on us!’14When he saw them, he said, ‘Go, show yourselves to the priests.’ And as they went, they were cleansed.15One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice.16He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him – and he was a Samaritan.17Jesus asked, ‘Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine?18Has no-one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?’19Then he said to him, ‘Rise and go; your faith has made you well.’
The coming of the kingdom of God
20Once, on being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, ‘The coming of the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed,21nor will people say, “Here it is,” or “There it is,” because the kingdom of God is in your midst.’[3]22Then he said to his disciples, ‘The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it.23People will tell you, “There he is!” or “Here he is!” Do not go running off after them.24For the Son of Man in his day[4] will be like the lightning, which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other.25But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.26‘Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man.27People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all.28‘It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building.29But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulphur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.30‘It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed.31On that day no-one who is on the housetop, with possessions inside, should go down to get them. Likewise, no-one in the field should go back for anything.32Remember Lot’s wife!33Whoever tries to keep their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life will preserve it.34I tell you, on that night two people will be in one bed; one will be taken and the other left.35-36Two women will be grinding corn together; one will be taken and the other left.’[5] (Mt 24,40)37‘Where, Lord?’ they asked. He replied, ‘Where there is a dead body, there the vultures will gather.’
1Jesus spoke to his disciples. ‘Things that make people sin are sure to come,’ he said. ‘But how terrible it will be for anyone who causes those things to come!2Suppose people lead one of these little ones to sin. It would be better for those people to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around their neck.3So watch what you do. ‘If your brother or sister sins against you, tell them they are wrong. Then if they turn away from their sins, forgive them.4Suppose they sin against you seven times in one day. And suppose they come back to you each time and say, “I’m sorry.” You must forgive them.’5The apostles said to the Lord, ‘Give us more faith!’6He replied, ‘Suppose you have faith as small as a mustard seed. Then you can say to this mulberry tree, “Be pulled up. Be planted in the sea.” And it will obey you.7‘Suppose one of you has a servant ploughing or looking after the sheep. And suppose the servant came in from the field. Will you say to him, “Come along now and sit down to eat”?8No. Instead, you will say, “Prepare my supper. Get yourself ready. Wait on me while I eat and drink. Then after that you can eat and drink.”9Will you thank the servant because he did what he was told to do?10It’s the same with you. Suppose you have done everything you were told to do. Then you should say, “We are not worthy to serve you. We have only done our duty.” ’
Jesus heals ten men who have a skin disease
11Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. He travelled along the border between Samaria and Galilee.12As he was going into a village, ten men met him. They had a skin disease. They were standing close by.13And they called out in a loud voice, ‘Jesus! Master! Have pity on us!’14Jesus saw them and said, ‘Go. Show yourselves to the priests.’ While they were on the way, they were healed.15When one of them saw that he was healed, he came back. He praised God in a loud voice.16He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him. The man was a Samaritan.17Jesus asked, ‘Weren’t all ten healed? Where are the other nine?18Didn’t anyone else return and give praise to God except this outsider?’19Then Jesus said to him, ‘Get up and go. Your faith has healed you.’
The coming of God’s kingdom
20Once the Pharisees asked Jesus when God’s kingdom would come. He replied, ‘The coming of God’s kingdom is not something you can see.21People will not say, “Here it is.” Or, “There it is.” That’s because God’s kingdom is among you.’22Then Jesus spoke to his disciples. ‘The time is coming,’ he said, ‘when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man. But you won’t see it.23People will tell you, “There he is!” Or, “Here he is!” Don’t go running off after them.24When the Son of Man comes, he will be like the lightning. It flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other.25But first the Son of Man must suffer many things. He will not be accepted by the people of today.26‘Remember how it was in the days of Noah. It will be the same when the Son of Man comes.27People were eating and drinking. They were getting married. They were giving their daughters to be married. They did all those things right up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all.28‘It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking. They were buying and selling. They were planting and building.29But on the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulphur rained down from heaven. And all the people were destroyed.30‘It will be just like that on the day the Son of Man is shown to the world.31Suppose someone is on the housetop on that day. And suppose what they own is inside the house. They should not go down to get what they own. No one in the field should go back for anything either.32Remember Lot’s wife!33Whoever tries to keep their life will lose it. Whoever loses their life will keep it.34I tell you, on that night two people will be in one bed. One person will be taken and the other left.35-36Two women will be grinding corn together. One will be taken and the other left.’37‘Where, Lord?’ his disciples asked. He replied, ‘The vultures will gather where there is a dead body.’
