1In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. (Lu 3:1; Ac 5:37; Ac 17:7)2This was the first registration when[1] Quirinius was governor of Syria. (Lu 2:1; Lu 3:1)3And all went to be registered, each to his own town.4And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, (1Sa 16:1; Mt 2:1; Mt 2:23; Lu 1:26; Lu 1:27; Lu 2:11; Joh 7:42)5to be registered with Mary, his betrothed,[2] who was with child.6And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. (Lu 2:4)7And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.[3] (Lu 2:12; Lu 2:16; Lu 22:11)
The Shepherds and the Angels
8And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.9And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. (Lu 9:31; Lu 24:4; Ac 7:55; Ac 12:7; 2Co 3:18)10And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. (Zec 9:9; Lu 2:32; Joh 11:50)11For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. (Lu 2:7; Lu 2:12)17And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child.18And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them.19But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. Jesus Presented at the Temple
22And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (1Sa 1:22; 1Sa 1:24; Lu 2:21; Lu 2:27; Ga 4:4)23(as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”) (Ex 13:2; Ex 13:9; Ex 13:12; 2Ch 31:3; Lu 2:39)24and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.” (Le 12:8; Lu 2:23)25Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. (Ge 49:18; Isa 25:9; Isa 40:1; Isa 57:18; Mr 15:43; Lu 1:6; Lu 2:38; Lu 23:51; Ac 2:5; Ac 8:2; Ac 22:12)26And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. (1Sa 24:6; Ps 89:48; Lu 9:20; Lu 23:35; Joh 8:51; Ac 2:27; Heb 11:5)27And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law, (Lu 2:33; Lu 2:41; Lu 2:43; Lu 2:48)28he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said, (Lu 1:64)29“Lord, now you are letting your servant[5] depart in peace, according to your word; (Ge 15:15; Lu 2:26)30for my eyes have seen your salvation (Isa 52:10; Lu 3:6)31that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, (Ps 98:2; Lu 24:47)32a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.” (Isa 42:6; Isa 45:25; Isa 46:13; Isa 49:6; Isa 52:10; Isa 60:3; Lu 2:10; Joh 8:12; Ac 13:47; Ac 26:23)33And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him. (Lu 2:27)34And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed (Isa 8:14; Mt 21:44; Joh 9:39; Ac 28:22; 1Co 1:23; 2Co 2:16; 1Pe 2:8)35(and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.”36And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from when she was a virgin, (Ex 15:20)37and then as a widow until she was eighty-four.[6] She did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day. (Mt 6:16; Lu 5:33; Ac 13:2; Ac 14:23; 2Co 6:5; 2Co 11:27; 1Ti 5:5)38And coming up at that very hour she began to give thanks to God and to speak of him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem. The Return to Nazareth
39And when they had performed everything according to the Law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. (Lu 2:4; Lu 2:23)40And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of God was upon him. (Lu 1:80)
The Boy Jesus in the Temple
41Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. (Ex 23:15; De 16:1; 1Sa 1:3; Lu 2:27; Joh 2:13)42And when he was twelve years old, they went up according to custom. (Joh 11:55)43And when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it, (Ex 12:15; Le 23:8; De 16:3; Lu 2:41)44but supposing him to be in the group they went a day’s journey, but then they began to search for him among their relatives and acquaintances,45and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, searching for him.46After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. (Mt 26:55; Lu 5:17)47And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.48And when his parents[7] saw him, they were astonished. And his mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been searching for you in great distress.” (Lu 2:27; Lu 2:49)49And he said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?”[8] (Lu 13:33; Joh 2:16; Joh 14:2)50And they did not understand the saying that he spoke to them. (Mr 9:32; Lu 18:34)51And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart. (Lu 2:19)52And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature[9] and in favor with God and man. (1Sa 2:26)
1A cette époque-là parut un édit de l'empereur Auguste qui ordonnait le recensement de tout l'Empire.2Ce premier recensement eut lieu pendant que Quirinius était gouverneur de Syrie.3Tous allaient se faire inscrire, chacun dans sa ville d'origine.4Joseph aussi monta de la Galilée, de la ville de Nazareth, pour se rendre en Judée dans la ville de David, appelée Bethléhem, parce qu'il était de la famille et de la lignée de David.5Il y alla pour se faire inscrire avec sa femme Marie qui était enceinte.6Pendant qu'ils étaient là, le moment où Marie devait accoucher arriva,7et elle mit au monde son fils premier-né. Elle l'enveloppa de langes et le coucha dans une mangeoire parce qu'il n'y avait pas de place pour eux dans la salle des hôtes.8Il y avait dans la même région des bergers qui passaient la nuit dans les champs pour y garder leur troupeau.9Un ange du Seigneur leur apparut et la gloire du Seigneur resplendit autour d'eux. Ils furent saisis d'une grande frayeur.10Mais l'ange leur dit: «N'ayez pas peur, car je vous annonce une bonne nouvelle qui sera une source de grande joie pour tout le peuple:11aujourd'hui, dans la ville de David, il vous est né un Sauveur qui est le Messie[1], le Seigneur.12Voici à quel signe vous le reconnaîtrez: vous trouverez un nouveau-né enveloppé de langes et couché dans une mangeoire.»13Et tout à coup une foule d'anges de l'armée céleste se joignit à l'ange. Ils adressaient des louanges à Dieu et disaient:14«Gloire à Dieu dans les lieux très hauts, paix sur la terre et bienveillance parmi les hommes!»15Lorsque les anges les eurent quittés pour retourner au ciel, les bergers se dirent les uns aux autres: «Allons jusqu'à Bethléhem pour voir ce qui est arrivé, ce que le Seigneur nous a fait connaître.»16Ils se dépêchèrent d'y aller et ils trouvèrent Marie et Joseph, ainsi que le nouveau-né couché dans la mangeoire.17Après l'avoir vu, ils racontèrent ce qui leur avait été dit au sujet de ce petit enfant.18Tous ceux qui entendirent les bergers furent étonnés de ce qu'ils leur disaient.19Marie gardait le souvenir de tout cela et le méditait dans son cœur.20Puis les bergers repartirent en célébrant la gloire de Dieu et en lui adressant des louanges à cause de tout ce qu'ils avaient entendu et vu et qui était conforme à ce qui leur avait été annoncé.
Jésus présenté dans le temple
21Huit jours plus tard, ce fut le moment de circoncire l'enfant; on lui donna le nom de Jésus, nom que l'ange avait indiqué avant sa conception.22Quand la période de leur purification prit fin, conformément à la loi de Moïse, Joseph et Marie l'amenèrent à Jérusalem pour le présenter au Seigneur23– suivant ce qui est écrit dans la loi du Seigneur: Tout mâle premier-né sera consacré au Seigneur[2] – (Ex 13:2)24et pour offrir en sacrifice un couple de tourterelles ou deux jeunes pigeons[3], comme cela est prescrit dans la loi du Seigneur. (Le 12:8)25Or il y avait à Jérusalem un homme appelé Siméon. Cet homme était juste et pieux, il attendait la consolation d'Israël et l'Esprit saint était sur lui.26Le Saint-Esprit lui avait révélé qu'il ne mourrait pas avant d'avoir vu le Messie du Seigneur.27Il vint au temple, poussé par l'Esprit. Et quand les parents amenèrent le petit enfant Jésus pour accomplir à son sujet ce que prescrivait la loi,28il le prit dans ses bras, bénit Dieu et dit:29«Maintenant, Seigneur, tu laisses ton serviteur s'en aller en paix, conformément à ta promesse,30car mes yeux ont vu ton salut,31salut que tu as préparé devant tous les peuples,32lumière pour éclairer les nations et gloire d'Israël, ton peuple.»33Joseph et la mère [de Jésus] étaient émerveillés de ce qu'on disait de lui.34Siméon les bénit et dit à Marie, sa mère: «Cet enfant est destiné à amener la chute et le relèvement de beaucoup en Israël et à devenir un signe qui provoquera la contradiction.35Toi-même, une épée te transpercera l'âme. Ainsi, les pensées de beaucoup de cœurs seront révélées.»36Il y avait aussi une prophétesse, Anne, fille de Phanuel, de la tribu d'Aser. Elle était d'un âge très avancé. Elle n'avait vécu que 7 ans avec son mari après son mariage.37Restée veuve et âgée de 84 ans, elle ne quittait pas le temple; elle servait Dieu nuit et jour dans le jeûne et dans la prière.38Arrivée elle aussi à la même heure, elle disait publiquement sa reconnaissance envers Dieu et parlait de Jésus à tous ceux qui attendaient la délivrance à Jérusalem.39Après avoir accompli tout ce que prescrivait la loi du Seigneur, Joseph et Marie retournèrent en Galilée, à Nazareth, leur ville.40Or l'enfant grandissait et se fortifiait [en esprit]. Il était rempli de sagesse et la grâce de Dieu était sur lui.
Jésus à 12 ans dans le temple
41Les parents de Jésus allaient chaque année à Jérusalem pour la fête de la Pâque.42Lorsqu'il eut 12 ans, ils y montèrent avec lui comme c'était la coutume pour cette fête.43Puis, quand la fête fut terminée, ils repartirent, mais l'enfant Jésus resta à Jérusalem sans que sa mère et Joseph s'en aperçoivent.44Croyant qu'il était avec leurs compagnons de voyage, ils firent une journée de chemin, tout en le cherchant parmi leurs parents et leurs connaissances.45Mais ils ne le trouvèrent pas et ils retournèrent à Jérusalem pour le chercher.46Au bout de trois jours, ils le trouvèrent dans le temple, assis au milieu des maîtres; il les écoutait et les interrogeait.47Tous ceux qui l'entendaient étaient stupéfaits de son intelligence et de ses réponses.48Quand ses parents le virent, ils furent frappés d'étonnement, et sa mère lui dit: «Mon enfant, pourquoi as-tu agi ainsi avec nous? Ton père et moi, nous te cherchions avec angoisse.»49Il leur dit: «Pourquoi me cherchiez-vous? Ne saviez-vous pas qu'il faut que je m'occupe des affaires de mon Père[4]?»50Mais ils ne comprirent pas ce qu'il leur disait.51Puis il descendit avec eux pour aller à Nazareth et il leur était soumis. Sa mère gardait précieusement toutes ces choses dans son cœur.52Jésus grandissait en sagesse, en taille et en grâce devant Dieu et devant les hommes.
