1A long time afterward, when the Lord had given rest to Israel from all their surrounding enemies, and Joshua was old and well advanced in years, (Jos 11:23; Jos 13:1)2Joshua summoned all Israel, its elders and heads, its judges and officers, and said to them, “I am now old and well advanced in years. (De 31:28; Jos 24:1; 1Ch 28:1)3And you have seen all that the Lord your God has done to all these nations for your sake, for it is the Lord your God who has fought for you. (Ex 14:14; Jos 10:14; Jos 10:42)4Behold, I have allotted to you as an inheritance for your tribes those nations that remain, along with all the nations that I have already cut off, from the Jordan to the Great Sea in the west. (Jos 13:2)5The Lord your God will push them back before you and drive them out of your sight. And you shall possess their land, just as the Lord your God promised you. (Ex 23:30; Ex 33:2; Ex 34:11; Nu 33:53; De 11:23; Jos 13:6)6Therefore, be very strong to keep and to do all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, turning aside from it neither to the right hand nor to the left, (De 5:32; De 28:14; Jos 1:7)7that you may not mix with these nations remaining among you or make mention of the names of their gods or swear by them or serve them or bow down to them, (Ex 23:13; Ex 23:33; De 7:2; Ps 16:4; Jer 5:7; Zep 1:5)8but you shall cling to the Lord your God just as you have done to this day. (De 10:20; De 11:22; De 13:4; Jos 22:5)9For the Lord has driven out before you great and strong nations. And as for you, no man has been able to stand before you to this day. (Ex 23:30; Ex 33:2; Ex 34:11; De 11:23; Jos 1:5; Jos 10:8; Jos 13:6; Jos 21:44)10One man of you puts to flight a thousand, since it is the Lord your God who fights for you, just as he promised you. (Ex 14:14; Le 26:8; De 3:22; De 32:30; Jos 23:3)11Be very careful, therefore, to love the Lord your God. (Jos 22:5)12For if you turn back and cling to the remnant of these nations remaining among you and make marriages with them, so that you associate with them and they with you, (Ex 34:16; De 7:3)13know for certain that the Lord your God will no longer drive out these nations before you, but they shall be a snare and a trap for you, a whip on your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from off this good ground that the Lord your God has given you. (Ex 23:33; Nu 33:55; De 7:16; Jud 2:3; Jud 2:21)14“And now I am about to go the way of all the earth, and you know in your hearts and souls, all of you, that not one word has failed of all the good things[1] that the Lord your God promised concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one of them has failed. (Jos 21:45; 1Ki 2:2)15But just as all the good things that the Lord your God promised concerning you have been fulfilled for you, so the Lord will bring upon you all the evil things, until he has destroyed you from off this good land that the Lord your God has given you, (Le 26:14; De 28:15)16if you transgress the covenant of the Lord your God, which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them. Then the anger of the Lord will be kindled against you, and you shall perish quickly from off the good land that he has given to you.”
1L'Eternel avait depuis longtemps donné du repos à Israël en le délivrant de tous les ennemis qui l'entouraient. Josué était vieux, il était d'un âge avancé.2Alors Josué convoqua tout Israël, ses anciens, ses chefs, ses juges et ses officiers. Il leur dit: «Je suis vieux, je suis d'un âge avancé.3Vous avez vu tout ce que l'Eternel, votre Dieu, a fait à toutes ces nations devant vous. En effet, c'est l'Eternel, votre Dieu, qui a combattu pour vous.4Voyez, par tirage au sort je vous ai donné en héritage pour vos tribus les nations qui restent et toutes celles que j'ai exterminées, à partir du Jourdain et jusqu'à la mer Méditerranée vers le soleil couchant.5C'est l'Eternel, votre Dieu, qui les détruira et les chassera devant vous. Vous posséderez leur pays, comme l'Eternel, votre Dieu, vous l'a dit.6»Appliquez-vous avec force à respecter et à mettre en pratique tout ce qui est écrit dans le livre de la loi de Moïse, sans vous en écarter ni à droite ni à gauche.7Ne vous mélangez pas avec les nations qui sont restées parmi vous. Ne prononcez pas le nom de leurs dieux et ne l'employez pas pour prêter serment. Ne les servez pas et ne vous prosternez pas devant eux.8Attachez-vous au contraire à l'Eternel, votre Dieu, comme vous l'avez fait jusqu'à aujourd'hui.9L'Eternel a chassé devant vous des nations grandes et puissantes et personne, jusqu'à aujourd'hui, n'a pu vous résister.10Un seul parmi vous en poursuivait 1000 parce que l'Eternel, votre Dieu, combattait pour vous, comme il vous l'a dit.11Veillez donc attentivement sur vous-mêmes afin d'aimer l'Eternel, votre Dieu.12Si vous vous détournez de l'Eternel et que vous vous attachez aux nations qui restent encore parmi vous, si vous vous unissez à elles par des mariages et que vous vous mélangez les uns aux autres,13soyez certains que l'Eternel, votre Dieu, ne continuera pas à chasser ces nations devant vous. Elles seront au contraire un filet et un piège pour vous, un fouet contre vos flancs et des épines dans vos yeux, jusqu'à ce que vous ayez disparu de ce bon terrain que l'Eternel, votre Dieu, vous a donné.14»Je m'en vais maintenant par le chemin commun à toute la terre. Reconnaissez de tout votre cœur et de toute votre âme qu'aucune des bonnes paroles dites à votre sujet par l'Eternel, votre Dieu, n'est restée sans effet. Toutes se sont réalisées pour vous, aucune n'est restée sans effet.15Et de même que toutes les bonnes paroles que l'Eternel, votre Dieu, vous avait dites se sont accomplies pour vous, de même il accomplira toutes les paroles mauvaises contre vous, jusqu'à ce qu'il vous ait détruits et fait disparaître de ce bon terrain qu'il vous a donné.16Si vous violez l'alliance que l'Eternel, votre Dieu, vous a prescrite et si vous allez servir d'autres dieux et vous prosterner devant eux, la colère de l'Eternel s'enflammera contre vous et vous ne tarderez pas à disparaître du bon pays qu'il vous a donné.»
