1 There was a man of Benjamin whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, son of Zeror, son of Becorath, son of Aphiah, a Benjaminite, a man of wealth. (1Sa 14:51; 1Ch 8:33; 1Ch 9:39) 2 And he had a son whose name was Saul, a handsome young man. There was not a man among the people of Israel more handsome than he. From his shoulders upward he was taller than any of the people. (1Sa 8:16; 1Sa 10:23) 3 Now the donkeys of Kish, Saul’s father, were lost. So Kish said to Saul his son, “Take one of the young men with you, and arise, go and look for the donkeys.” 4 And he passed through the hill country of Ephraim and passed through the land of Shalishah, but they did not find them. And they passed through the land of Shaalim, but they were not there. Then they passed through the land of Benjamin, but did not find them. (Jos 24:33; 2Ki 4:42) 5 When they came to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant[1] who was with him, “Come, let us go back, lest my father cease to care about the donkeys and become anxious about us.” (1Sa 10:2) 6 But he said to him, “Behold, there is a man of God in this city, and he is a man who is held in honor; all that he says comes true. So now let us go there. Perhaps he can tell us the way we should go.” (De 33:1; Jud 13:6; 1Sa 3:19; 1Ki 13:1) 7 Then Saul said to his servant, “But if we go, what can we bring the man? For the bread in our sacks is gone, and there is no present to bring to the man of God. What do we have?” (1Ki 14:3; 2Ki 4:42; 2Ki 8:8) 8 The servant answered Saul again, “Here, I have with me a quarter of a shekel[2] of silver, and I will give it to the man of God to tell us our way.” 9 (Formerly in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, he said, “Come, let us go to the seer,” for today’s “prophet” was formerly called a seer.) (Ge 25:22) 10 And Saul said to his servant, “Well said; come, let us go.” So they went to the city where the man of God was. 11 As they went up the hill to the city, they met young women coming out to draw water and said to them, “Is the seer here?” (Ge 24:11) 12 They answered, “He is; behold, he is just ahead of you. Hurry. He has come just now to the city, because the people have a sacrifice today on the high place. (Ge 31:54; 1Sa 10:5; 1Sa 16:2; 1Sa 20:29; 1Ki 3:2) 13 As soon as you enter the city you will find him, before he goes up to the high place to eat. For the people will not eat till he comes, since he must bless the sacrifice; afterward those who are invited will eat. Now go up, for you will meet him immediately.” 14 So they went up to the city. As they were entering the city, they saw Samuel coming out toward them on his way up to the high place. 15 Now the day before Saul came, the Lord had revealed to Samuel: (Ru 4:4; 1Sa 15:1; Ac 13:21) 16 “Tomorrow about this time I will send to you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be prince[3] over my people Israel. He shall save my people from the hand of the Philistines. For I have seen[4] my people, because their cry has come to me.” (Ex 2:25; Ex 3:7; Ex 3:9; 1Sa 10:1) 17 When Samuel saw Saul, the Lord told him, “Here is the man of whom I spoke to you! He it is who shall restrain my people.” (1Sa 16:12) 18 Then Saul approached Samuel in the gate and said, “Tell me where is the house of the seer?” 19 Samuel answered Saul, “I am the seer. Go up before me to the high place, for today you shall eat with me, and in the morning I will let you go and will tell you all that is on your mind. 20 As for your donkeys that were lost three days ago, do not set your mind on them, for they have been found. And for whom is all that is desirable in Israel? Is it not for you and for all your father’s house?” (1Sa 9:3) 21 Saul answered, “Am I not a Benjaminite, from the least of the tribes of Israel? And is not my clan the humblest of all the clans of the tribe of Benjamin? Why then have you spoken to me in this way?” (Jud 6:15; Jud 20:46; Jud 21:6; 1Sa 15:17; Ps 68:27) 22 Then Samuel took Saul and his young man and brought them into the hall and gave them a place at the head of those who had been invited, who were about thirty persons. 23 And Samuel said to the cook, “Bring the portion I gave you, of which I said to you, ‘Put it aside.’” 24 So the cook took up the leg and what was on it and set them before Saul. And Samuel said, “See, what was kept is set before you. Eat, because it was kept for you until the hour appointed, that you might eat with the guests.”[5] So Saul ate with Samuel that day. (Ex 29:22; Ex 29:27; Le 7:32; Eze 24:4) 25 And when they came down from the high place into the city, a bed was spread for Saul on the roof, and he lay down to sleep.[6] (De 22:8; 2Sa 11:2; 2Sa 16:22; Ne 8:16; Mt 24:17; Ac 10:9) 26 Then at the break of dawn[7] Samuel called to Saul on the roof, “Up, that I may send you on your way.” So Saul arose, and both he and Samuel went out into the street. 27 As they were going down to the outskirts of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to pass on before us, and when he has passed on, stop here yourself for a while, that I may make known to you the word of God.”

1 قيس از مردان ثروتمند و متنفذ قبيلهٔ بنيامين بود. قيس پسر ابیئيل بود و ابیئيل پسر صرور، صرور پسر بكورت و بكورت پسر افيح. 2 قيس پسری داشت به نام شائول كه خوشاندامترين مرد اسرائيل بود. وقتی او در ميان مردم میايستاد، از شانه به بالا از همه بلندقدتر بود. 3 روزی الاغهای قيس گم شدند، پس او يكی از نوكران خود را همراه شائول به جستجوی الاغها فرستاد. 4 آنها تمام كوهستان افرايم، زمين شليشه، نواحی شعليم و تمام سرزمين بنيامين را گشتند، ولی نتوانستند الاغها را پيدا كنند. 5 سرانجام پس از جستجوی زياد وقتی به صوف رسيدند، شائول به نوكرش گفت: «بيا برگرديم، الان پدرمان برای ما بيشتر نگران است تا برای الاغها!» 6 اما نوكرش گفت: «صبر كن! در اين شهر مرد مقدسی زندگی میكند كه مردم احترام زيادی برايش قائلند، زيرا هر چه میگويد، درست درمیآيد. بيا پيش او برويم شايد به ما بگويد كه الاغها كجا هستند.» 7 شائول جواب داد: «ولی ما چيزی نداريم به او بدهيم، حتی خوراكی هم كه داشتيم تمام شده است.» 8 نوكر گفت: «من يک سكهٔ كوچک نقره دارم. میتوانيم آن را به او بدهيم تا ما را راهنمايی كند.» 9-11 شائول موافقت كرد و گفت: «بسيار خوب، برويم.» آنها روانهٔ شهری شدند كه آن مرد مقدس در آن زندگی میكرد. در حالی که از تپهای كه شهر در بالای آن قرار داشت بالا میرفتند، ديدند چند دختر جوان برای كشيدن آب میآيند. از آنها پرسيدند: «آيا رايی در شهر است؟» (در آن زمان به نبی، رايی میگفتند، پس هر كه میخواست از خدا سؤال كند، میگفت: «پيش رايی میروم.») 12-13 دخترها گفتند: «بلی! اگر از همين راه برويد به او خواهيد رسيد. او امروز به شهر آمده تا در مراسم قربانی كه در بالای تپه برگزار میشود، شركت نمايد. تا او نيايد و قربانی را بركت ندهد، مردم چيزی نخواهند خورد. پس عجله كنيد تا قبل از آنكه به تپه برسد او را ببينيد.» 14 پس آنها وارد شهر شدند و به سموئيل كه به طرف تپه میرفت برخوردند. 15 خداوند روز قبل به سموئيل چنين گفته بود: 16 «فردا همين موقع مردی را از سرزمين بنيامين نزد تو خواهم فرستاد. او را به عنوان رهبر قوم من با روغن تدهين كن. او ايشان را از دست فلسطينیها خواهد رهانيد، زيرا من ناله و دعای ايشان را شنيدهام.» 17 وقتی سموئيل شائول را ديد، خداوند به سموئيل گفت: «اين همان مردی است كه دربارهاش با تو صحبت كردم. او بر قوم من حكومت خواهد كرد.» 18 كنار دروازهٔ شهر، شائول به سموئيل رسيد و از او پرسيد: «آيا ممكن است بگوييد كه خانهٔ رايی كجاست؟» 19 سموئيل پاسخ داد: «من همان شخص هستم. جلوتر از من به بالای آن تپه برويد تا امروز در آنجا با هم غذا بخوريم. فردا صبح آنچه را كه میخواهی بدانی خواهم گفت و شما را مرخص خواهم كرد. 20 برای الاغهايی كه سه روز پيش گم شدهاند نگران نباش، چون پيدا شدهاند. در ضمن، بدان كه اميد تمام قوم اسرائيل بر تو و بر خاندان پدرت است.» 21 شائول گفت: «ولی من از قبيلهٔ بنيامين هستم كه كوچكترين قبيلهٔ اسرائيل است و خاندان من هم كوچكترين خاندان قبيلهٔ بنيامين است. چرا اين سخنان را به من میگويی.» 22 سموئيل، شائول و نوكرش را به تالار مراسم قربانی آورد و آنها را بر صدر دعوتشدگان كه تقريباً سی نفر بودند، نشاند. 23 آنگاه سموئيل به آشپز گفت: «آن قسمت از گوشتی را كه به تو گفتم نزد خود نگاه داری، بياور.» 24 آشپز ران را با مخلفاتش آورده، جلو شائول گذاشت. سموئيل گفت: «بخور! اين گوشت را برای تو نگاه داشتهام تا همراه كسانی كه دعوت كردهام از آن بخوری.» پس سموئيل و شائول با هم خوراک خوردند. 25 پس از پايان مراسم قربانی، مردم به شهر برگشتند و سموئيل، شائول را به پشت بام خانهٔ خود برد و با او به گفتگو پرداخت. 26 روز بعد، صبح زود سموئيل، شائول را كه در پشت بام خوابيده بود صدا زد و گفت: «بلند شو، وقت رفتن است!» پس شائول برخاسته، روانه شد و سموئيل تا بيرون شهر، ايشان را بدرقه كرد. 27 چون به بيرون شهر رسيدند، سموئيل به شائول گفت: «به نوكرت بگو كه جلوتر از ما برود.» نوكر جلوتر رفت. آنگاه سموئيل به شائول گفت: «من از جانب خدا برای تو پيغامی دارم؛ بايست تا آن را به تو بگويم.»
