13“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. (Mr 9:50; Lu 14:34)14“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. (Joh 8:12; Eph 5:8; Php 2:15)15Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Christ Came to Fulfill the Law
17“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. (Mt 7:12; Ro 3:31; Ro 10:4; Ro 13:8; Ga 3:24)18For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. (Mt 24:35; Lu 16:17)19Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. Anger
21“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ (Ex 20:13; De 5:17; De 16:18; Mt 5:27; Mt 5:31; Mt 5:33; Mt 5:38; Mt 5:43; Mt 19:18; Mr 10:19; Lu 18:20; Ro 13:9; Jas 2:11)22But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother[3] will be liable to judgment; whoever insults[4] his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell[5] of fire. (Mt 5:21; Mt 5:29; Mt 18:9; Mr 9:43; Jas 3:6; 1Jo 3:15)23So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, (Mt 6:15; Mt 8:4; Mt 23:18; Mr 11:25)24leave your gift there before the altar and go. Lust
27“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ (Ex 20:14; De 5:18; Mt 5:21)28But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. (2Sa 11:2; Job 31:1; Pr 6:25)29If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. (Mt 5:22; Mt 10:28; Mt 13:41; Mt 18:8; Mt 23:15; Mt 23:33; Mr 9:43; Lu 12:5; Lu 17:1)30And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell. (Mt 5:29)
Divorce
31“It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ (De 24:1; Jer 3:1; Mt 5:27; Mt 19:7)32But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. (Mt 19:9; Mr 10:11; Lu 16:18; Ro 7:3; 1Co 7:10)
Oaths
33“Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ (Le 19:12; Nu 30:2; De 23:21; Ec 5:4; Mt 5:27; 1Ti 1:10)34But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, (Isa 66:1; Mt 23:22; Ac 7:49; Jas 5:12; Re 4:2)35or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. (Ps 48:2)36And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.37Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.[7] (Pr 10:19)
Retaliation
38“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ (Ex 21:24; Le 24:20; De 19:21; Mt 5:27)39But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. (Isa 50:6; La 3:30; Mt 26:67; Lu 6:29; Ro 12:17; 1Pe 2:23)40And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic,[8] let him have your cloak as well. (Mt 5:39)41And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. (Mt 27:32)42Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you. Love Your Enemies
43“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ (Le 19:18; Mt 5:21; Mt 19:19)44But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, (Ex 23:4; Job 31:29; Ps 7:4; Lu 6:27; Lu 23:34; Ac 7:60; Ro 12:20; 2Ti 4:16; 1Pe 3:9)45so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. (Lu 6:35; Ac 14:17; Eph 5:1; Php 2:15)46For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? (Lu 6:32)47And if you greet only your brothers,[9] what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 1Cuando vio a las multitudes, subió a la ladera de una montaña y se sentó. Sus discípulos se le acercaron,2y tomando él la palabra, comenzó a enseñarles diciendo:3«Dichosos los pobres en espíritu, porque el reino de los cielos les pertenece.4Dichosos los que lloran, porque serán consolados.5Dichosos los humildes, porque recibirán la tierra como herencia.6Dichosos los que tienen hambre y sed de justicia, porque serán saciados.7Dichosos los compasivos, porque serán tratados con compasión.8Dichosos los de corazón limpio, porque ellos verán a Dios.9Dichosos los que trabajan por la paz, porque serán llamados hijos de Dios.10Dichosos los perseguidos por causa de la justicia, porque el reino de los cielos les pertenece.11»Dichosos serán ustedes cuando por mi causa la gente los insulte, los persiga y levante contra ustedes toda clase de calumnias.12Alégrense y llénense de júbilo, porque les espera una gran recompensa en el cielo. Así también persiguieron a los profetas que los precedieron a ustedes.
La sal y la luz
13Üstedes son la sal de la tierra. Pero si la sal se vuelve insípida, ¿cómo recobrará su sabor? Ya no sirve para nada, sino para que la gente la deseche y la pisotee.14Üstedes son la luz del mundo. Una ciudad en lo alto de una colina no puede esconderse.15Ni se enciende una lámpara para cubrirla con un cajón. Por el contrario, se pone en la repisa para que alumbre a todos los que están en la casa.16Hagan brillar su luz delante de todos, para que ellos puedan ver las buenas obras de ustedes y alaben al Padre que está en el cielo.
El cumplimiento de la ley
17»No piensen que he venido a anular la ley o los profetas; no he venido a anularlos sino a darles cumplimiento.18Les aseguro que mientras existan el cielo y la tierra, ni una letra ni una tilde de la ley desaparecerán hasta que todo se haya cumplido.19Todo el que infrinja uno solo de estos mandamientos, por pequeño que sea, y enseñe a otros a hacer lo mismo, será considerado el más pequeño en el reino de los cielos; pero el que los practique y enseñe será considerado grande en el reino de los cielos.20Porque les digo a ustedes, que no van a entrar en el reino de los cielos a menos que su justicia supere a la de los fariseos y de los maestros de la ley.
El homicidio
21Üstedes han oído que se dijo a sus antepasados: “No mates,[1] y todo el que mate quedará sujeto al juicio del tribunal.”22Pero yo les digo que todo el que se enoje[2] con su hermano quedará sujeto al juicio del tribunal. Es más, cualquiera que insulte a su hermano quedará sujeto al juicio del Consejo. Pero cualquiera que lo maldiga quedará sujeto al juicio del infierno.23»Por lo tanto, si estás presentando tu ofrenda en el altar y allí recuerdas que tu hermano tiene algo contra ti,24deja tu ofrenda allí delante del altar. Ve primero y reconcíliate con tu hermano; luego vuelve y presenta tu ofrenda.25»Si tu adversario te va a denunciar, llega a un acuerdo con él lo más pronto posible. Hazlo mientras vayan de camino al juzgado, no sea que te entregue al juez, y el juez al guardia, y te echen en la cárcel.26Te aseguro que no saldrás de allí hasta que pagues el último centavo.[3]
El adulterio
27Üstedes han oído que se dijo: “No cometas adulterio.”[4]28Pero yo les digo que cualquiera que mira a una mujer y la codicia ya ha cometido adulterio con ella en el corazón.29Por tanto, si tu ojo derecho te hace pecar, sácatelo y tíralo. Más te vale perder una sola parte de tu cuerpo, y no que todo él sea arrojado al infierno.[5]30Y si tu mano derecha te hace pecar, córtatela y arrójala. Más te vale perder una sola parte de tu cuerpo, y no que todo él vaya al infierno.
El divorcio
31»Se ha dicho: “El que repudia a su esposa debe darle un certificado de divorcio.”[6]32Pero yo les digo que, excepto en caso de infidelidad conyugal, todo el que se divorcia de su esposa, la induce a cometer adulterio, y el que se casa con la divorciada comete adulterio también.
Los juramentos
33»También han oído que se dijo a sus antepasados: “No faltes a tu juramento, sino cumple con tus promesas al Señor.”34Pero yo les digo: No juren de ningún modo: ni por el cielo, porque es el trono de Dios;35ni por la tierra, porque es el estrado de sus pies; ni por Jerusalén, porque es la ciudad del gran Rey.36Tampoco jures por tu cabeza, porque no puedes hacer que ni uno solo de tus cabellos se vuelva blanco o negro.37Cuando ustedes digan “sí”, que sea realmente sí; y cuando digan “no”, que sea no. Cualquier cosa de más, proviene del maligno.
Ojo por ojo
38Üstedes han oído que se dijo: “Ojo por ojo y diente por diente.”[7]39Pero yo les digo: No resistan al que les haga mal. Si alguien te da una bofetada en la mejilla derecha, vuélvele también la otra.40Si alguien te pone pleito para quitarte la capa, déjale también la camisa.41Si alguien te obliga a llevarle la carga un kilómetro, llévasela dos.42Al que te pida, dale; y al que quiera tomar de ti prestado, no le vuelvas la espalda.
El amor a los enemigos
43Üstedes han oído que se dijo: “Ama a tu prójimo[8]y odia a tu enemigo.”44Pero yo les digo: Amen a sus enemigos y oren por quienes los persiguen,[9]45para que sean hijos de su Padre que está en el cielo. Él hace que salga el sol sobre malos y buenos, y que llueva sobre justos e injustos.46Si ustedes aman solamente a quienes los aman, ¿qué recompensa recibirán? ¿Acaso no hacen eso hasta los recaudadores de impuestos?47Y si saludan a sus hermanos solamente, ¿qué de más hacen ustedes? ¿Acaso no hacen esto hasta los gentiles?48Por tanto, sean perfectos, así como su Padre celestial es perfecto.
