Jehoiakim Burns Jeremiah’s Scroll

1 In the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord: (Jer 25:1; Jer 36:9; Jer 45:1) 2 “Take a scroll and write on it all the words that I have spoken to you against Israel and Judah and all the nations, from the day I spoke to you, from the days of Josiah until today. 3 It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the disaster that I intend to do to them, so that every one may turn from his evil way, and that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin.” (Jer 18:8; Jer 26:3; Jer 31:34; Eze 12:3; Am 5:15; Zep 2:3)

4 Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah, and Baruch wrote on a scroll at the dictation of Jeremiah all the words of the Lord that he had spoken to him. (Jer 32:12; Jer 36:2) 5 And Jeremiah ordered Baruch, saying, “I am banned from going to the house of the Lord, (Jer 32:2; Jer 33:1; Jer 36:4; Jer 39:15)

6 so you are to go, and on a day of fasting in the hearing of all the people in the Lord’s house you shall read the words of the Lord from the scroll that you have written at my dictation. You shall read them also in the hearing of all the men of Judah who come out of their cities. (Jer 36:9) 7 It may be that their plea for mercy will come before the Lord, and that every one will turn from his evil way, for great is the anger and wrath that the Lord has pronounced against this people.” (Jer 36:3) 8 And Baruch the son of Neriah did all that Jeremiah the prophet ordered him about reading from the scroll the words of the Lord in the Lord’s house. 9 In the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the ninth month, all the people in Jerusalem and all the people who came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem proclaimed a fast before the Lord. (2Ch 20:3; Jer 36:1; Jer 36:22) 10 Then, in the hearing of all the people, Baruch read the words of Jeremiah from the scroll, in the house of the Lord, in the chamber of Gemariah the son of Shaphan the secretary, which was in the upper court, at the entry of the New Gate of the Lord’s house. (Jer 35:2) 11 When Micaiah the son of Gemariah, son of Shaphan, heard all the words of the Lord from the scroll, (2Ch 34:8; 2Ch 34:15; 2Ch 34:18; Jer 26:24; Jer 40:5)

12 he went down to the king’s house, into the secretary’s chamber, and all the officials were sitting there: Elishama the secretary, Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, Elnathan the son of Achbor, Gemariah the son of Shaphan, Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the officials. 13 And Micaiah told them all the words that he had heard, when Baruch read the scroll in the hearing of the people. 14 Then all the officials sent Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, son of Shelemiah, son of Cushi, to say to Baruch, “Take in your hand the scroll that you read in the hearing of the people, and come.” So Baruch the son of Neriah took the scroll in his hand and came to them. 15 And they said to him, “Sit down and read it.” So Baruch read it to them. 16 When they heard all the words, they turned one to another in fear. And they said to Baruch, “We must report all these words to the king.” (Jer 36:20) 17 Then they asked Baruch, “Tell us, please, how did you write all these words? Was it at his dictation?” 18 Baruch answered them, “He dictated all these words to me, while I wrote them with ink on the scroll.” (Jer 36:32; Ro 16:22) 19 Then the officials said to Baruch, “Go and hide, you and Jeremiah, and let no one know where you are.” 20 So they went into the court to the king, having put the scroll in the chamber of Elishama the secretary, and they reported all the words to the king. (Jer 36:12) 21 Then the king sent Jehudi to get the scroll, and he took it from the chamber of Elishama the secretary. And Jehudi read it to the king and all the officials who stood beside the king. 22 It was the ninth month, and the king was sitting in the winter house, and there was a fire burning in the fire pot before him. (Jer 36:9; Am 3:15; Joh 10:22) 23 As Jehudi read three or four columns, the king would cut them off with a knife and throw them into the fire in the fire pot, until the entire scroll was consumed in the fire that was in the fire pot. 24 Yet neither the king nor any of his servants who heard all these words was afraid, nor did they tear their garments. (Jos 7:6; Jer 36:16) 25 Even when Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah urged the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them. (Isa 59:16; Jer 36:12) 26 And the king commanded Jerahmeel the king’s son and Seraiah the son of Azriel and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel to seize Baruch the secretary and Jeremiah the prophet, but the Lord hid them. 27 Now after the king had burned the scroll with the words that Baruch wrote at Jeremiah’s dictation, the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 28 “Take another scroll and write on it all the former words that were in the first scroll, which Jehoiakim the king of Judah has burned. 29 And concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah you shall say, ‘Thus says the Lord, You have burned this scroll, saying, “Why have you written in it that the king of Babylon will certainly come and destroy this land, and will cut off from it man and beast?” (Jer 26:9) 30 Therefore thus says the Lord concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah: He shall have none to sit on the throne of David, and his dead body shall be cast out to the heat by day and the frost by night. 31 And I will punish him and his offspring and his servants for their iniquity. I will bring upon them and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem and upon the people of Judah all the disaster that I have pronounced against them, but they would not hear.’” (Jer 1:16) 32 Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah, who wrote on it at the dictation of Jeremiah all the words of the scroll that Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire. And many similar words were added to them. (Jer 36:4; Jer 36:18)

1 Esta palabra del Señor vino a Jeremías en el año cuarto del rey Joacim hijo de Josías: 2 «Toma un rollo y escribe en él todas las palabras que desde los tiempos de Josías, desde que comencé a hablarte hasta ahora, te he dicho acerca de Israel, de Judá y de las otras naciones. 3 Cuando los de Judá se enteren de todas las calamidades que pienso enviar contra ellos, tal vez abandonen su mal camino y pueda yo perdonarles su iniquidad y su pecado.» 4 Jeremías llamó a Baruc hijo de Nerías, y mientras le dictaba, Baruc escribía en el rollo todo lo que el Señor le había dicho al profeta. 5 Luego Jeremías le dio esta orden a Baruc: «Estoy detenido y no puedo ir a la casa del Señor. 6 Por tanto, ve a la casa del Señor en el día de ayuno, y lee en voz alta ante el pueblo de Jerusalén las palabras del Señor que te he dictado y que escribiste en el rollo. Léeselas también a toda la gente de Judá que haya venido de sus ciudades. 7 ¡A lo mejor su oración llega a la presencia del Señor y cada uno se convierte de su mal camino! ¡Ciertamente son terribles la ira y el furor con que el Señor ha amenazado a este pueblo!» 8 Baruc hijo de Nerías hizo tal y como le había ordenado el profeta Jeremías: Leyó en la casa del Señor las palabras contenidas en el rollo. 9 En el mes noveno del año quinto de Joacim hijo de Josías, rey de Judá, todo el pueblo de Jerusalén y todos los que habían venido de las otras ciudades de Judá fueron convocados a ayunar en honor del Señor. 10 Baruc se dirigió al atrio superior de la casa del Señor, a la entrada de la Puerta Nueva, y desde la sala de Guemarías hijo de Safán, el cronista, leyó ante todo el pueblo el rollo que contenía las palabras de Jeremías. 11 Micaías hijo de Guemarías, nieto de Safán, escuchó todas las palabras del Señor que estaban escritas en el rollo. 12 Entonces bajó al palacio del rey, a la sala del cronista, donde estaban reunidos todos los jefes, es decir, el cronista Elisama, Delaías hijo de Semaías, Elnatán hijo de Acbor, Guemarías hijo de Safán, Sedequías hijo de Ananías, y todos los demás jefes. 13 Micaías les contó todo lo que había escuchado de lo que Baruc había leído ante el pueblo. 14 Entonces todos los jefes enviaron a Yehudi hijo de Netanías, nieto de Selemías y bisnieto de Cusí, para que le dijera a Baruc: «Toma el rollo que has leído ante el pueblo, y ven.» Baruc hijo de Nerías lo tomó y se presentó ante ellos. 15 Los jefes le dijeron: —Siéntate y léenos lo que está en el rollo. Baruc lo leyó ante ellos. 16 Terminada la lectura, se miraron temerosos unos a otros y le dijeron: —Tenemos que informar de todo esto al rey. 17 Luego le preguntaron a Baruc: —Dinos, ¿cómo fue que escribiste todo esto? ¿Te lo dictó Jeremías? 18 —Sí —les respondió Baruc—, él me lo dictó, y yo lo escribí con tinta, en el rollo. 19 Entonces los jefes le dijeron a Baruc: —Tú y Jeremías, vayan a esconderse. ¡Que nadie sepa donde están! 20 Después de dejar el rollo en la sala del cronista Elisama, los jefes se presentaron en el atrio, delante del rey, y lo pusieron al tanto de todo lo ocurrido. 21 El rey envió a Yehudi a buscar el rollo, y Yehudi lo tomó de la sala de Elisama y lo leyó en presencia del rey y de todos los jefes que estaban con él. 22 Era el mes noveno, y por eso el rey estaba en su casa de invierno, sentado junto a un brasero encendido. 23 A medida que Yehudi terminaba de leer tres o cuatro columnas, el rey las cortaba con un estilete de escriba y las echaba al fuego del brasero. Así lo hizo con todo el rollo, hasta que éste se consumió en el fuego. 24 Ni el rey ni los jefes que escucharon todas estas palabras tuvieron temor ni se rasgaron las vestiduras. 25 Esto sucedió a pesar de que Elnatán, Delaías y Guemarías le habían suplicado al rey que no quemara el rollo; pero el rey no les hizo caso. 26 Por el contrario, mandó a Jeramel, su hijo, a Seraías hijo de Azriel, y a Selemías hijo de Abdel que arrestaran al escriba Baruc y al profeta Jeremías. Pero el Señor los había escondido. 27 Luego que el rey quemó el rollo con las palabras que Jeremías le había dictado a Baruc, la palabra del Señor vino a Jeremías: 28 «Toma otro rollo, y escribe exactamente lo mismo que estaba escrito en el primer rollo quemado por Joacim, rey de Judá. 29 Y adviértele a Joacim que así dice el Señor: “Tú quemaste aquel rollo, diciendo: ‘¿Por qué has escrito en él que con toda seguridad el rey de Babilonia vendrá a destruir esta tierra, y a borrar de ella a toda persona y animal?’ ” 30 Por eso, así dice el Señor acerca de Joacim, rey de Judá: “Ninguno de sus descendientes ocupará el trono de David; su cadáver será arrojado, y quedará expuesto al calor del día y a las heladas de la noche. 31 Castigaré la iniquidad de él, la de su descendencia y la de sus siervos. Enviaré contra ellos, y contra los habitantes de Jerusalén y de Judá, todas las calamidades con que los amenacé, porque no me hicieron caso.” » 32 Entonces Jeremías tomó otro rollo y se lo dio al escriba Baruc hijo de Nerías. Baruc escribió en el rollo todo lo que Jeremías le dictó, lo cual era idéntico a lo escrito en el rollo quemado por el rey Joacim. Se agregaron, además, muchas otras cosas semejantes.
