1It was now two days before the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to arrest him by stealth and kill him, (Mt 21:46; Mt 26:2; Lu 22:1; Joh 6:4; Joh 11:53)2for they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar from the people.” (Mt 27:24)
Jesus Anointed at Bethany
3And while he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper,[1] as he was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head. (Mt 21:17; Mt 26:6; Lu 7:37; Joh 11:18; Joh 12:1)4There were some who said to themselves indignantly, “Why was the ointment wasted like that?5For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii[2] and given to the poor.” And they scolded her. (Joh 11:33; Joh 11:38; Joh 13:29)6But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.7For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good for them. But you will not always have me. 12And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb, his disciples said to him, “Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?” (Ex 12:18; Mt 26:17; Lu 22:7; 1Co 5:7)13And he sent two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him, (Mr 11:1)14and wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says, Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ (Lu 2:7; Joh 11:28)15And he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for us.” (Ac 1:13)16And the disciples set out and went to the city and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.17And when it was evening, he came with the twelve. (Mt 26:20; Lu 22:14; Lu 22:21; Joh 13:21)18And as they were reclining at table and eating, Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.” (Ps 41:9; Joh 6:70; Joh 13:18)19They began to be sorrowful and to say to him one after another, “Is it I?”20He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping bread into the dish with me. (Mr 14:10; Mr 14:18)21For the Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! Institution of the Lord’s Supper
22And as they were eating, he took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to them, and said, “Take; this is my body.” (Mt 14:19; Mt 26:26; Lu 22:18; Joh 6:53; 1Co 10:16; 1Co 11:23)23And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it. (Mt 15:36)24And he said to them, “This is my blood of the[3] covenant, which is poured out for many. (Ex 24:8; Zec 9:11; Mt 20:28; Mr 14:22; Heb 13:20)25Truly, I say to you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
Jesus Foretells Peter’s Denial
26And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. (Mt 21:1; Mt 26:30; Lu 22:39; Joh 18:1)27And Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away, for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’ (Zec 13:7; Joh 16:32)28But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee.” (Mt 28:7; Mt 28:10; Mt 28:16; Mr 16:7)29Peter said to him, “Even though they all fall away, I will not.” (Lu 22:31; Lu 22:33)30And Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” (Mr 14:68; Mr 14:72; Lu 22:34; Joh 13:38)31But he said emphatically, “If I must die with you, I will not deny you.” And they all said the same. (Joh 13:37)
Jesus Prays in Gethsemane
32And they went to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” (Mt 26:36; Mr 14:26; Lu 22:40)33And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly distressed and troubled. (Mt 17:23; Mr 5:37; Mr 9:2)34And he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch.”[4] (Ps 42:5; Mt 24:42; Joh 12:27)35And going a little farther, he fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. (Mr 14:41; Lu 22:53; Joh 12:23; Joh 12:27; Joh 13:1; Joh 16:4; Joh 17:1; Heb 5:7)36And he said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” (Mt 19:26; Mr 10:38; Joh 5:30; Joh 6:38; Ro 8:15; Ga 4:6; Php 2:8)37And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour?38Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Mt 6:13; Mr 14:34; 1Pe 4:7)39And again he went away and prayed, saying the same words. (Mr 14:36)40And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy, and they did not know what to answer him. (Mr 9:6; Lu 9:32; Lu 9:33)41And he came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough; the hour has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. (Mr 9:31; Mr 10:33; Mr 14:35; Lu 22:38)42Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”
Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus
43And immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. (Mt 26:47; Mr 14:10; Lu 22:47; Joh 18:3; Ac 1:16)44Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man. Seize him and lead him away under guard.”45And when he came, he went up to him at once and said, “Rabbi!” And he kissed him. (Lu 7:38; Lu 7:45; Lu 15:20; Joh 1:38; Ac 20:37)46And they laid hands on him and seized him.47But one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant[5] of the high priest and cut off his ear. (Lu 22:38)48And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me?49Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. But let the Scriptures be fulfilled.” (Mt 1:22; Mt 4:23; Mt 21:23; Mr 14:21; Lu 2:46; Joh 8:2; Joh 18:20)50And they all left him and fled. (Ps 88:8; Ps 88:18; Mr 14:27; Joh 16:32)
A Young Man Flees
51And a young man followed him, with nothing but a linen cloth about his body. And they seized him, (Jud 14:12; Pr 31:24; Mr 15:46)52but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked.
Jesus Before the Council
53And they led Jesus to the high priest. And all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes came together. (Mt 26:57; Lu 22:54; Joh 18:12; Joh 18:19)54And Peter had followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. And he was sitting with the guards and warming himself at the fire. (Mt 26:3; Mr 14:53; Mr 14:67; Mr 14:68; Joh 7:32; Joh 18:3; Joh 18:15; Joh 18:18)55Now the chief priests and the whole council[6] were seeking testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none.56For many bore false witness against him, but their testimony did not agree. (De 17:6; De 19:15; Ps 27:12; Ps 35:11)57And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying,58“We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.’” (Mr 15:29; Joh 2:19; Ac 6:14; Ac 7:48; Ac 17:24; 2Co 5:1; Heb 9:11; Heb 9:24)59Yet even about this their testimony did not agree.60And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?”[7]61But he remained silent and made no answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” (Isa 53:7; Mt 1:17; Mr 8:29; Mr 15:4; Lu 22:67; Joh 19:9; Ro 1:25)62And Jesus said, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.” (Ps 110:1; Mt 16:27; Mt 24:30; Mr 16:19; Heb 1:3)63And the high priest tore his garments and said, “What further witnesses do we need? (Nu 14:6; Ac 14:14)64You have heard his blasphemy. What is your decision?” And they all condemned him as deserving death. (Le 24:16; Mt 9:3; Lu 23:50; Joh 10:36)65And some began to spit on him and to cover his face and to strike him, saying to him, “Prophesy!” And the guards received him with blows. (Es 7:8; Isa 50:6; Mt 5:39; Mr 10:34; Mr 15:19; Lu 22:63; Ac 23:2)
Peter Denies Jesus
66And as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came, (Mt 26:69; Lu 22:55; Joh 18:16; Joh 18:25)67and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus.” (Mr 14:54)68But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you mean.” And he went out into the gateway[8] and the rooster crowed.[9] (Mr 14:30; Mr 14:72)69And the servant girl saw him and began again to say to the bystanders, “This man is one of them.”70But again he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders again said to Peter, “Certainly you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”71But he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know this man of whom you speak.”72And immediately the rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept.[10] (Mr 14:30; Mr 14:68; Ac 3:13)
1Peste două zile era Paștele și Sărbătoarea Azimelor. Conducătorii preoților și cărturarii căutau cum să pună mâna pe Isus prin viclenie și să‑L omoare. (Mt 26:2; Lu 22:1; Joh 11:45)2Însă ei ziceau: „Nu în timpul sărbătorii, ca nu cumva să se facă tulburare în popor.“
Ungerea lui Isus la Betania
3În timp ce El Se afla în Betania, șezând la masă în casa lui Simon, leprosul, a venit o femeie care avea un vas de alabastru cu parfum de nard pur, foarte scump. Ea a spart vasul de alabastru și a turnat parfumul pe capul Lui. (Mt 26:6; Lu 7:37; Joh 12:1)4Dar unii, indignați, își ziceau între ei: „Pentru ce s‑a făcut risipa aceasta de parfum?5Căci parfumul acesta s‑ar fi putut vinde cu peste trei sute de denari[1], iar banii să fi fost dați săracilor.“ Și o mustrau pe femeie. (Mr 6:37)6Însă Isus a zis: „Lăsați‑o! De ce o necăjiți? Ea a făcut o faptă bună față de Mine!7Căci pe săraci îi aveți întotdeauna cu voi și puteți să le faceți bine oricând vreți, dar pe Mine nu Mă aveți întotdeauna.8Ea a făcut ce a putut: Mi‑a uns trupul mai dinainte, în vederea pregătirii Mele pentru înmormântare.9Adevărat vă spun că oriunde va fi proclamată Evanghelia, în toată lumea, se va spune și ce a făcut această femeie, în amintirea ei.“
Trădarea lui Iuda
10Atunci Iuda Iscarioteanul, unul dintre cei doisprezece, s‑a dus la conducătorii preoților ca să‑L dea pe mâna lor. (Mt 26:14; Lu 22:3)11Când au auzit ei lucrul acesta, s‑au bucurat și i‑au promis că‑i vor da argint[2]. Și el căuta cum să‑L dea pe mâna lor la momentul potrivit. (Mt 26:15)
Masa pascală
12În prima zi a Sărbătorii Azimelor, când se jertfește mielul de Paște,[3] ucenicii Lui L‑au întrebat: – Unde vrei să ne ducem să‑Ți pregătim să mănânci jertfa de Paște? (Le 23:5; Eze 45:21; Mt 26:17; Lu 22:7)13El i‑a trimis pe doi dintre ucenicii Lui în cetate și le‑a zis: – Duceți‑vă în cetate și acolo vă va întâlni un om care duce un vas cu apă. Urmați‑l,14și acolo unde va intra el, spuneți stăpânului casei astfel: „Învățătorul întreabă: «Unde este camera Mea de oaspeți în care urmează să mănânc Paștele împreună cu ucenicii Mei?»“15El vă va arăta sus o cameră mare și gata aranjată. Acolo să faceți pregătirile pentru noi!16Ucenicii au plecat, au ajuns în cetate și au găsit totul așa cum le spusese Isus. Și au pregătit Paștele.
Descoperirea trădătorului
17Când s‑a înserat, Isus a venit împreună cu cei doisprezece. (Mt 26:20; Lu 22:21; 1Co 11:23)18În timp ce ședeau la masă și mâncau, Isus a zis: – Adevărat vă spun că unul dintre voi, care mănâncă împreună cu Mine, Mă va trăda[4].19Ei s‑au întristat foarte tare și unul câte unul au început să‑L întrebe: – Nu cumva sunt eu?20Dar El le‑a zis: – Este unul dintre cei doisprezece, cel care pune mâna în vas împreună cu Mine.[5] (Ps 41:9)21Căci Fiul Omului Se duce după cum este scris cu privire la El, dar vai de omul acela prin care este trădat Fiul Omului! Era mai bine pentru acel om dacă nu s‑ar fi născut!
Cina Domnului
22În timp ce mâncau, Isus a luat o pâine și, după ce a rostit binecuvântarea, a frânt‑o și le‑a dat‑o ucenicilor, zicând: „Luați! Acesta este trupul Meu.“ (1Co 11:23)23Apoi a luat un pahar și, după ce a mulțumit[6], l‑a dat ucenicilor și toți au băut din el.24Isus le‑a zis: „Acesta este sângele Meu, sângele noului legământ, care este vărsat pentru mulți.25Adevărat vă spun că nu voi mai bea din rodul viței până în ziua aceea, când îl voi bea nou în Împărăția lui Dumnezeu.“26După ce au cântat un imn[7], au ieșit îndreptându‑se spre Muntele Măslinilor.
Isus prezice lepădarea lui Petru
27Isus le‑a zis: – Toți vă veți poticni, pentru că este scris: „Voi lovi păstorul, și oile vor fi risipite!“[8] (Zec 13:7; Mt 26:31; Lu 22:31; Joh 13:36)28Dar, după învierea Mea, voi merge înaintea voastră în Galileea.29Petru I‑a răspuns: – Chiar dacă toți se vor poticni, eu nu mă voi poticni!30Isus i‑a zis: – Adevărat îți spun că astăzi, în noaptea aceasta, înainte să cânte cocoșul de două ori[9], te vei lepăda de Mine de trei ori.31Dar Petru a răspuns și mai convins: – Chiar dacă ar trebui să mor împreună cu Tine, nu mă voi lepăda nicidecum de Tine! Și toți au spus la fel.
Ghetsimani
32Apoi s‑au dus într‑un loc numit Ghetsimani, și Isus le‑a zis ucenicilor Săi: – Stați jos aici, până Eu Mă rog! (Mt 26:36; Lu 22:39)33I‑a luat cu El pe Petru, pe Iacov și pe Ioan și a început să Se înspăimânte și să Se tulbure.34El le‑a zis: – Nespus de mâhnit este sufletul Meu, până la moarte! Rămâneți aici și vegheați!35Și, mergând puțin mai înainte, a căzut cu fața la pământ și Se ruga ca, dacă este posibil, să treacă de la El ceasul acela.36El zicea: „Abba[10], Tată, la Tine toate lucrurile sunt posibile! Îndepărtează de la Mine paharul[11] acesta! Totuși, nu cum vreau Eu, ci cum vrei Tu!“ (Mr 10:38)37Apoi a venit la ucenici, dar i‑a găsit dormind. El i‑a zis lui Petru: – Simone, dormi?! N‑ai putut veghea nici măcar o oră?38Vegheați și rugați‑vă, ca să nu cădeți[12] în ispită! Duhul într-adevăr este dornic, dar carnea este neputincioasă.39S‑a îndepărtat și S‑a rugat din nou, zicând aceleași cuvinte.40A venit iarăși la ucenici și i‑a găsit dormind, pentru că li se îngreunaseră ochii de somn. Ei nu știau ce să‑I răspundă.41Când a venit a treia oară, le‑a zis: – Încă mai dormiți și vă odihniți?[13] Destul! A sosit ceasul! Iată că Fiul Omului este predat în mâinile păcătoșilor.42Sculați‑vă! Să mergem! Iată că se apropie cel ce Mă trădează!
Arestarea lui Isus
43Și imediat, în timp ce El încă vorbea, a venit Iuda, unul dintre cei doisprezece, și împreună cu el o mulțime cu săbii și ciomege, trimiși de conducătorii preoților, de către cărturari și de către bătrâni. (Mt 26:47; Lu 22:47; Joh 18:3)44Trădătorul le dăduse un semn, zicând: „Cel pe Care‑L voi săruta, Acela este! Să puneți mâna pe El și să‑L duceți sub pază!“45Când a venit, s‑a apropiat imediat de Isus și a zis: „Rabbi![14]“ Și L‑a sărutat. (Mr 9:5)46Atunci ei au pus mâna pe Isus și L‑au prins.47Unul dintre cei ce stăteau acolo a scos sabia și l‑a lovit pe sclavul marelui preot, tăindu‑i urechea.48Însă Isus, răspunzând, le‑a zis: „Ați ieșit să Mă arestați cu săbii și ciomege, ca pe un răsculat[15]?49În fiecare zi eram cu voi în Templu și dădeam învățătură, dar n‑ați pus mâna pe Mine! Însă trebuie să se împlinească Scripturile.“50Atunci toți L‑au părăsit și au fugit.51Un anumit tânăr, care purta peste trupul gol doar o pânză de in, Îl urma pe Isus. Au pus mâna pe el,52dar el și‑a lăsat pânza de in și a fugit gol.
Isus înaintea Sinedriului
53Pe Isus L‑au dus la marele preot, iar acolo s‑au adunat toți conducătorii preoților, bătrânii și cărturarii. (Mt 26:57; Lu 22:54; Lu 22:63; Joh 18:12; Joh 18:19)54Petru Îl urmase de departe până în curtea marelui preot, iar apoi se așezase împreună cu gărzile și se încălzea la foc.55Conducătorii preoților și întregul Sinedriu[16] căutau vreo mărturie împotriva lui Isus, ca să‑L condamne la moarte, dar n‑au găsit,56pentru că, deși mulți dădeau mărturii false împotriva Lui, mărturiile lor nu se potriveau.57Unii s‑au ridicat și au depus împotriva Lui o mărturie falsă, zicând:58– Noi L‑am auzit zicând: „Eu voi dărâma acest Templu, făcut de mâna omului, și în trei zile voi construi altul, care nu va fi făcut de mâna omului.“59Dar nici așa nu se potrivea mărturia lor.60Marele preot s‑a ridicat în mijlocul lor și L‑a întrebat pe Isus, zicând: – Nu răspunzi nimic? Ce mărturisesc aceștia împotriva Ta?61Dar El tăcea și nu răspundea nimic.[17] Marele preot L‑a întrebat din nou: – Ești Tu Cristosul, Fiul Celui Binecuvântat? (Isa 53:7)62Isus a răspuns: – Eu sunt. Și Îl veți vedea pe Fiul Omului șezând la dreapta Puterii și venind cu norii cerului![18] (Ps 110:1; Da 7:13)63Atunci marele preot, sfâșiindu‑și hainele, a zis: – Ce nevoie mai avem de martori?!64Ați auzit blasfemia! Ce părere aveți? Toți L‑au condamnat considerând că este vrednic de moarte.65Unii au început să‑L scuipe, să‑I acopere fața, să‑L lovească și să‑I zică: – Profețește! Iar gărzile L‑au luat la palme.
Lepădarea lui Petru
66În timp ce Petru se afla jos, în curte, a venit una dintre slujnicele marelui preot (Mt 26:69; Lu 22:54; Joh 18:15; Joh 18:25)67și când l‑a văzut pe Petru încălzindu‑se la foc, s‑a uitat la el și a zis: – Și tu erai cu nazarineanul Acela, Isus!68Dar el a negat, zicând: – Nu știu, nici nu înțeleg despre ce vorbești! A ieșit afară, în fața porții, și atunci a cântat cocoșul.69Slujnica l‑a văzut și a început din nou să le spună celor ce stăteau acolo: – Acesta este unul dintre ei!70Dar el a negat din nou. După puțin timp însă, cei ce stăteau acolo i‑au zis din nou lui Petru: – Cu siguranță și tu ești unul dintre ei, căci ești galileean!71Dar el a început să blesteme și să jure, zicând: – Nu‑L cunosc pe Omul Acesta despre care vorbiți!72Și imediat a cântat cocoșul a doua oară. Atunci Petru și‑a adus aminte cuvântul pe care i‑l spusese Isus: „Înaintea celui de‑al doilea cântat al cocoșului, te vei lepăda de Mine de trei ori!“ Și gândindu‑se la aceasta a început să plângă.[19]
