1 Then Pilate took Jesus and flogged him. (Mt 20:19; Mt 27:26; Mr 15:15; Lu 23:16)2 And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and arrayed him in a purple robe. (Mt 27:27; Mr 15:16)3 They came up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and struck him with their hands.4 Pilate went out again and said to them, “See, I am bringing him out to you that you may know that I find no guilt in him.” (Joh 18:38; Joh 19:6)5 So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold the man!” (Joh 19:2; Joh 19:14)6 When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no guilt in him.” (Joh 18:31; Joh 19:4)7 The Jews[1] answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has made himself the Son of God.” (Le 24:16; Mt 26:63; Lu 22:70; Joh 5:17; Joh 10:33; Joh 10:36)8 When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid. (Mt 27:19)9 He entered his headquarters again and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. (Mt 26:63; Joh 7:27; Joh 18:33; Joh 18:37)10 So Pilate said to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?”11 Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin.” (Mt 27:2; Joh 9:41; Joh 18:14; Joh 18:28; Ro 13:1)12 From then on Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.” (Lu 23:2; Ac 3:13)13 So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic[2] Gabbatha. (Mt 27:19)14 Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour.[3] He said to the Jews, “Behold your King!” (Mt 27:62; Joh 18:28; Joh 19:5)15 They cried out, “Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” (Lu 23:18; Ac 21:36)16 So he delivered him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus, (Mt 27:26; Mr 15:15; Lu 23:25; Joh 18:36)17 and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. (Mt 27:32; Mt 27:33; Mr 15:21; Mr 15:22; Lu 14:27; Lu 23:26; Lu 23:33)18 There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. (Mt 27:38; Mr 15:24; Mr 15:27; Lu 23:32)19 Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” (Mt 27:37; Mr 15:26; Lu 23:38)20 Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. (Nu 15:35; Joh 19:17; Heb 13:12)21 So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’”22 Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.” (Ge 43:14; Es 4:16)23 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic.[4] But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, (Mt 27:35; Mr 15:24; Lu 23:34)24 so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says, “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” So the soldiers did these things, (Ps 22:18; Joh 13:18)25 but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. (Mt 27:55; Mr 15:40; Lu 23:49)26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” (Joh 2:4; Joh 13:23)27 Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. (Joh 16:32)28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” (Ps 69:21; Joh 4:6; Joh 19:24; Joh 19:30)29 A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. (Mt 27:48; Mr 15:36; Lu 23:36)30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. (Mt 27:50; Mr 15:37; Lu 23:46; Joh 17:4; Joh 19:28; Ac 13:29)31 Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. (Ex 12:16; De 21:23; Jos 8:29; Jos 10:26; Joh 19:14)32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him. (Joh 19:18)33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water. (1Jo 5:6; 1Jo 5:8)35 He who saw it has borne witness—his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—that you also may believe. (Joh 15:27; Joh 20:31; Joh 21:24; 1Jo 1:1; Re 1:2)36 For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.” (Ex 12:46; Nu 9:12; Ps 34:20; Mt 1:22; 1Co 5:7)37 And again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they have pierced.” (Zec 12:10; Re 1:7)38 After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. (Mt 27:57; Mr 15:42; Lu 23:50; Joh 7:13)39 Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus[5] by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds[6] in weight. (Ps 45:8; Pr 7:17; So 4:14; Mr 16:1; Lu 24:1; Joh 3:1; Joh 7:50)40 So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. (2Ch 16:14; Lu 24:12; Joh 11:44; Joh 20:5; Ac 5:6)41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 1 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.2 The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe3 and went up to him again and again, saying, ‘Hail, king of the Jews!’ And they slapped him in the face.4 Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, ‘Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.’5 When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, ‘Here is the man!’6 As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, ‘Crucify! Crucify!’ But Pilate answered, ‘You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.’7 The Jewish leaders insisted, ‘We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God.’8 When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid,9 and he went back inside the palace. ‘Where do you come from?’ he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer.10 ‘Do you refuse to speak to me?’ Pilate said. ‘Don’t you realise I have power either to free you or to crucify you?’11 Jesus answered, ‘You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.’12 From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, ‘If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar.’13 When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic is Gabbatha).14 It was the day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about noon. ‘Here is your king,’ Pilate said to the Jews.15 But they shouted, ‘Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!’ ‘Shall I crucify your king?’ Pilate asked. ‘We have no king but Caesar,’ the chief priests answered.16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took charge of Jesus.17 Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha).18 There they crucified him, and with him two others – one on each side and Jesus in the middle.19 Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: Jesus of Nazareth, the king of the Jews.20 Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek.21 The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, ‘Do not write “The King of the Jews”, but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.’22 Pilate answered, ‘What I have written, I have written.’23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.24 ‘Let’s not tear it,’ they said to one another. ‘Let’s decide by lot who will get it.’ This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled that said, ‘They divided my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.’ So this is what the soldiers did. (Ps 22:18)25 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing near by, he said to her, ‘Woman,[1] here is your son,’27 and to the disciple, ‘Here is your mother.’ From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.28 Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, ‘I am thirsty.’29 A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips.30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, ‘It is finished.’ With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.31 Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down.32 The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other.33 But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.35 The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe.36 These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: ‘Not one of his bones will be broken,’[2] (Ex 12:46; Nu 9:12; Ps 34:20)37 and, as another scripture says, ‘They will look on the one they have pierced.’ (Zec 12:10)38 Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders. With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away.39 He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about thirty-five kilograms.40 Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.41 At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no-one had ever been laid.42 Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and since the tomb was near by, they laid Jesus there.
