1 Brothers,^[1] my heart’s desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. 2 For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. (Ac 21:20; Ro 9:31) 3 For, being ignorant of the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. (Ro 1:17) 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.^[2] (Mt 5:17; Ga 3:24)

The Message of Salvation to All

5 For Moses writes about the righteousness that is based on the law, that the person who does the commandments shall live by them. (Le 18:5; Ne 9:29; Eze 20:11; Eze 20:13; Eze 20:21; Mt 19:17; Lu 10:28; Ro 7:10; Ga 3:12)

6 But the righteousness based on faith says, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down) (De 30:12; Ro 9:30) 7 “or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). (Heb 13:20; Re 9:1) 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); (De 30:14) 9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11 For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” (Ro 9:33) 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Joe 2:32; Ac 2:21) 14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” (Isa 52:7; Na 1:15; Eph 6:15) 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. 20 Then Isaiah is so bold as to say, “I have been found by those who did not seek me; I have shown myself to those who did not ask for me.” (Isa 65:1; Ro 9:30) 21 But of Israel he says, “All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people.” (Isa 65:2)

1 Brothers and sisters, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. 2 For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. 3 Since they did not know the righteousness of God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. 4 Christ is the culmination of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes. 5 Moses writes this about the righteousness that is by the law: ‘The person who does these things will live by them.’ (Le 18:5) 6 But the righteousness that is by faith says: ‘Do not say in your heart, “Who will ascend into heaven?” ’ (that is, to bring Christ down) (De 30:12) 7 ‘or “Who will descend into the deep?” ’ (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 1 Brothers and sisters, with all my heart I long for the people of Israel to be saved. I pray to God for them. 2 I can tell you for certain that they really want to serve God. But how they are trying to do it is not based on knowledge. 3 They didn’t know that God’s power makes people right with himself. They tried to get right with God in their own way. They didn’t do it in God’s way. 4 Christ has fulfilled everything the law was meant to do. So now everyone who believes can be right with God. 5 Moses writes about how the law could help a person do what God requires. He writes, ‘The person who does these things will live by them.’ (Le 18:5) 6 But the way to do what God requires must begin by having faith in him. Scripture says, ‘Do not say in your heart, “Who will go up into heaven?” ’ That means to go up into heaven and bring Christ down. (De 30:12) 7 ‘And do not say, “Who will go down into the grave?” ’ That means to bring Christ up from the dead. (De 30:13) 8 But what does it say? ‘The message is near you. It’s in your mouth and in your heart.’ This means the message about faith that we are preaching.
