1Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem and summoned the elders, the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel. And they presented themselves before God. (Jos 23:2; Jos 24:25; Jos 24:32; 1Sa 10:19)2And Joshua said to all the people, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Long ago, your fathers lived beyond the Euphrates,[1] Terah, the father of Abraham and of Nahor; and they served other gods. (Ge 11:27; Ge 31:30; Ge 35:2)3Then I took your father Abraham from beyond the River[2] and led him through all the land of Canaan, and made his offspring many. I gave him Isaac. Choose Whom You Will Serve
14“Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. (De 10:12; Jos 24:2; Jos 24:23; 1Sa 12:24)15And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Ge 18:19; Ex 23:24; Ex 23:32; Ex 34:15; De 13:7; De 29:18; Jos 24:14; Jos 24:22; Jud 6:10; 1Ki 18:21; Eze 20:39)16Then the people answered, “Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods,17for it is the Lord our God who brought us and our fathers up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and who did those great signs in our sight and preserved us in all the way that we went, and among all the peoples through whom we passed.18And the Lord drove out before us all the peoples, the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve the Lord, for he is our God.”19But Joshua said to the people, “You are not able to serve the Lord, for he is a holy God. He is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions or your sins. And he took a large stone and set it up there under the terebinth that was by the sanctuary of the Lord. Joshua’s Death and Burial
29After these things Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died, being 110 years old. (Jud 2:7)30And they buried him in his own inheritance at Timnath-serah, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, north of the mountain of Gaash. (Jos 19:50)31Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua and had known all the work that the Lord did for Israel. (De 11:2; De 31:13; Jud 2:7)32As for the bones of Joseph, which the people of Israel brought up from Egypt, they buried them at Shechem, in the piece of land that Jacob bought from the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for a hundred pieces of money.[3] It became an inheritance of the descendants of Joseph. (Ge 33:19; Ge 50:25; Ex 13:19)33And Eleazar the son of Aaron died, and they buried him at Gibeah, the town of Phinehas his son, which had been given him in the hill country of Ephraim. (Ge 11:26)3Da holte ich euren Vater Abraham von jenseits des Stroms und ließ ihn durch das ganze Land Kanaan ziehen. Ich schenkte ihm zahlreiche Nachkommenschaft und gab ihm Isaak. Schafft die Götter fort, denen eure Väter jenseits des Stroms und in Ägypten gedient haben, und dient dem HERRN!15Wenn es euch aber nicht gefällt, dem HERRN zu dienen, dann entscheidet euch heute, wem ihr dienen wollt: den Göttern, denen eure Väter jenseits des Stroms dienten, oder den Göttern der Amoriter, in deren Land ihr wohnt. Ich aber und mein Haus, wir wollen dem HERRN dienen.16Das Volk antwortete: Das sei uns fern, dass wir den HERRN verlassen und anderen Göttern dienen.17Denn der HERR, unser Gott, war es, der uns und unsere Väter aus dem Sklavenhaus Ägypten herausgeführt hat und der vor unseren Augen alle die großen Wunder getan hat. Er hat uns beschützt auf dem ganzen Weg, den wir gegangen sind, und unter allen Völkern, durch deren Gebiet wir gezogen sind.18Der HERR hat alle Völker vertrieben, auch die Amoriter, die vor uns im Land wohnten. Auch wir wollen dem HERRN dienen; denn er ist unser Gott.19Da sagte Josua zum Volk: Ihr seid nicht imstande, dem HERRN zu dienen, denn er ist ein heiliger Gott, ein eifersüchtiger Gott; er wird euch eure Frevel und eure Sünden nicht verzeihen. (Ex 20:5)20Wenn ihr den HERRN verlasst und fremden Göttern dient, dann wird er sich von euch abwenden, wird Unglück über euch bringen und euch ein Ende bereiten, obwohl er euch zuvor Gutes getan hat.21Das Volk aber sagte zu Josua: Nein, wir wollen dem HERRN dienen.22Josua antwortete dem Volk: Ihr seid Zeugen gegen euch selbst, dass ihr selbst euch den HERRN erwählt habt, um ihm zu dienen. Sie antworteten: Wir sind Zeugen.23Schafft also jetzt die fremden Götter ab, die noch bei euch sind, und neigt eure Herzen dem HERRN zu, dem Gott Israels!24Das Volk sagte zu Josua: Dem HERRN, unserem Gott, wollen wir dienen und auf seine Stimme hören.25So schloss Josua an jenem Tag einen Bund für das Volk und gab dem Volk Gesetz und Recht in Sichem.26Josua schrieb alle diese Worte in das Buch der Weisung Gottes und er nahm einen großen Stein und stellte ihn in Sichem unter der Eiche auf, die im Heiligtum des HERRN steht. (Ge 35:4; Jud 9:6)27Dabei sagte er zu dem ganzen Volk: Seht her, dieser Stein wird ein Zeuge sein gegen uns; denn er hat alle Worte des HERRN gehört, die er zu uns gesprochen hat. Die Gräber Josuas, Josefs und Eleasars
29Nach diesen Ereignissen starb Josua, der Sohn Nuns, der Diener des HERRN, im Alter von hundertzehn Jahren. (Jud 2:8)30Man begrub ihn in Timnat-Serach, im Gebiet seines Erbbesitzes auf dem Gebirge Efraim, nördlich vom Berg Gaasch.31Israel aber diente dem HERRN, solange Josua lebte und solange die Ältesten am Leben waren, die Josua überlebten und alles wussten, was der HERR für Israel getan hatte.
