Hezekiah Seeks Isaiah’s Help

1 As soon as King Hezekiah heard it, he tore his clothes and covered himself with sackcloth and went into the house of the Lord. 2 And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the secretary, and the senior priests, covered with sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz. (Isa 1:1) 3 They said to him, “Thus says Hezekiah, ‘This day is a day of distress, of rebuke, and of disgrace; children have come to the point of birth, and there is no strength to bring them forth. (Isa 13:8; Isa 22:5; Ho 13:13) 4 It may be that the Lord your God will hear the words of the Rabshakeh, whom his master the king of Assyria has sent to mock the living God, and will rebuke the words that the Lord your God has heard; therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.’” (Isa 1:9; Isa 37:28) 5 When the servants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah, 6 Isaiah said to them, “Say to your master, ‘Thus says the Lord: Do not be afraid because of the words that you have heard, with which the young men of the king of Assyria have reviled me. 7 Behold, I will put a spirit in him, so that he shall hear a rumor and return to his own land, and I will make him fall by the sword in his own land.’” (Isa 19:14; Isa 37:9; Isa 37:38) 8 The Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria fighting against Libnah, for he had heard that the king had left Lachish. (Jos 10:31) 9 Now the king heard concerning Tirhakah king of Cush,^[1] “He has set out to fight against you.” And when he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying, (Isa 18:1; Isa 20:5) 10 “Thus shall you speak to Hezekiah king of Judah: ‘Do not let your God in whom you trust deceive you by promising that Jerusalem will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria. (Isa 36:14) 11 Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, devoting them to destruction. And shall you be delivered? 12 Have the gods of the nations delivered them, the nations that my fathers destroyed, Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the people of Eden who were in Telassar? (Ge 11:31; 2Ki 17:6; Isa 36:18) 13 Where is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, the king of the city of Sepharvaim, the king of Hena, or the king of Ivvah?’” (Isa 37:12)

Hezekiah’s Prayer for Deliverance

14 Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it; and Hezekiah went up to the house of the Lord, and spread it before the Lord. 15 And Hezekiah prayed to the Lord: 16 “O Lord of hosts, God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, you are the God, you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; you have made heaven and earth. 17 Incline your ear, O Lord, and hear; open your eyes, O Lord, and see; and hear all the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to mock the living God. (2Ch 6:40; 2Ch 32:19) 18 Truly, O Lord, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations and their lands, (Isa 10:13) 19 and have cast their gods into the fire. For they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone. Therefore they were destroyed. 20 So now, O Lord our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you alone are the Lord.”

Sennacherib’s Fall

21 Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Because you have prayed to me concerning Sennacherib king of Assyria, 22 this is the word that the Lord has spoken concerning him: “‘She despises you, she scorns you— the virgin daughter of Zion; she wags her head behind you— the daughter of Jerusalem. (Isa 1:8; Mic 4:13) 23 “Whom have you mocked and reviled? Against whom have you raised your voice and lifted your eyes to the heights? Against the Holy One of Israel! (Isa 10:17) 24 By your servants you have mocked the Lord, and you have said, With my many chariots I have gone up the heights of the mountains, to the far recesses of Lebanon, to cut down its tallest cedars, its choicest cypresses, to come to its remotest height, its most fruitful forest. (Isa 8:7; Isa 14:8) 25 I dug wells and drank waters, to dry up with the sole of my foot all the streams of Egypt. (Isa 19:6; Isa 20:4) 26 “Have you not heard that I determined it long ago? I planned from days of old what now I bring to pass, that you should make fortified cities crash into heaps of ruins, (Isa 10:5; Isa 10:15; Isa 25:1) 27 while their inhabitants, shorn of strength, are dismayed and confounded, and have become like plants of the field and like tender grass, like grass on the housetops, blighted^[2] before it is grown. 28 “I know your sitting down and your going out and coming in, and your raging against me. 29 Because you have raged against me and your complacency has come to my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth, and I will turn you back on the way by which you came.’ (Isa 10:12; Isa 37:34) 30 “And this shall be the sign for you: this year you shall eat what grows of itself, and in the second year what springs from that. Then in the third year sow and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat their fruit. 31 And the surviving remnant of the house of Judah shall again take root downward and bear fruit upward. (Isa 27:6) 32 For out of Jerusalem shall go a remnant, and out of Mount Zion a band of survivors. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this. (Isa 9:7; Isa 14:32) 33 “Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the king of Assyria: He shall not come into this city or shoot an arrow there or come before it with a shield or cast up a siege mound against it. (Hab 1:10; Lu 19:43) 34 By the way that he came, by the same he shall return, and he shall not come into this city, declares the Lord. 35 For I will defend this city to save it, for my own sake and for the sake of my servant David.” (Isa 29:1; Isa 31:5; Isa 38:6) 36 And the angel of the Lord went out and struck down 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians. And when people arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies. (Isa 10:33; Isa 14:25; Isa 17:14; Isa 29:5; Isa 30:31; Isa 31:8)

37 Then Sennacherib king of Assyria departed and returned home and lived at Nineveh. (Ge 10:11; Jon 1:2; Jon 3:3; Jon 4:11)

38 And as he was worshiping in the house of Nisroch his god, Adrammelech and Sharezer, his sons, struck him down with the sword. And after they escaped into the land of Ararat, Esarhaddon his son reigned in his place. (Ge 8:4; Ezr 4:2)

(Isa 66:9; Ho 13:13) 4 Vielleicht hört der HERR, dein Gott, die Worte des Rabschake, den sein Herr, der König von Assyrien, gesandt hat, den lebendigen Gott zu schmähen, und straft die Worte, die der HERR, dein Gott, gehört hat! So tu Fürbitte für die Übriggebliebenen, die noch vorhanden sind. 5 Und die Großen des Königs Hiskia kamen zu Jesaja. 6 Jesaja aber sprach zu ihnen: So sollt ihr eurem Herrn sagen: So spricht der HERR: Fürchte dich nicht vor den Worten, die du gehört hast, mit denen mich die Knechte des Königs von Assyrien gelästert haben! (Isa 10:24) 7 Siehe, ich gebe in ihn einen Geist, dass er ein Gerücht hört und in sein Land zurückkehrt, und ich will ihn durchs Schwert fällen in seinem Lande. (Isa 31:8) 8 Als aber der Rabschake zurückkam, fand er den König von Assyrien im Kampf gegen Libna; denn er hatte gehört, dass dieser von Lachisch abgezogen war. 9 Denn der König von Assyrien hatte gehört über Tirhaka, den König von Kusch: Er ist ausgezogen, gegen dich zu kämpfen. Als er das hörte, sandte er Boten zu Hiskia und ließ ihm sagen: 10 So sprecht zu Hiskia, dem König von Juda: Lass dich durch deinen Gott nicht betrügen, auf den du dich verlässt und sprichst: Jerusalem wird nicht in die Hand des Königs von Assyrien gegeben werden. (Isa 36:15) 11 Siehe, du hast gehört, was die Könige von Assyrien allen Ländern getan haben, dass sie den Bann an ihnen vollstreckten, und du allein solltest errettet werden? 12 Haben denn die Götter der Völker die Länder errettet, die von meinen Vätern vernichtet wurden: Gosan, Haran, Rezef und die von Eden in Telassar? (Isa 36:18) 13 Wo ist der König von Hamat und der König von Arpad und der König der Stadt Sefarwajim, von Hena und Awa? 14 Und als Hiskia den Brief von den Boten empfangen und gelesen hatte, ging er hinauf in das Haus des HERRN und breitete ihn aus vor dem HERRN. 15 Und Hiskia betete zum HERRN und sprach: 16 HERR Zebaoth, du Gott Israels, der du über den Cherubim thronst, du bist allein Gott über alle Königreiche auf Erden, du hast Himmel und Erde gemacht. (1Sa 4:4; Ps 80:2) 17 HERR, neige deine Ohren und höre doch; HERR, tu deine Augen auf und sieh doch! Höre doch alle die Worte Sanheribs, die er gesandt hat, um den lebendigen Gott zu schmähen. (Da 9:18) 18 Wahr ist’s, HERR, die Könige von Assyrien haben alle Königreiche verwüstet samt ihren Ländern 19 und haben ihre Götter ins Feuer geworfen; denn sie waren nicht Götter, sondern Werk von Menschenhänden, Holz und Stein. Die haben sie vertilgt. 20 Nun aber, HERR, unser Gott, errette uns aus seiner Hand, damit alle Königreiche auf Erden erfahren, dass du allein der HERR bist! (Isa 40:5; Isa 45:6) 21 Da sandte Jesaja, der Sohn des Amoz, zu Hiskia und ließ ihm sagen: So spricht der HERR, der Gott Israels: Was du von mir erbeten hast wegen des Königs Sanherib von Assyrien, habe ich gehört. 22 Dies ist’s, was der HERR über ihn spricht: Die Jungfrau, die Tochter Zion, verachtet dich und spottet deiner; die Tochter Jerusalem schüttelt das Haupt hinter dir her. 23 Wen hast du geschmäht und gelästert? Über wen hast du die Stimme erhoben? Du hobst deine Augen empor wider den Heiligen Israels. 24 Durch deine Knechte hast du den Herrn geschmäht und gesagt: »Ich bin mit der Menge meiner Wagen heraufgezogen auf die Höhe der Berge in den innersten Libanon und habe seine hohen Zedern abgehauen samt seinen auserwählten Zypressen und bin bis zu seiner äußersten Höhe gekommen, in seinen dichtesten Wald. (Isa 10:13) 25 Ich habe gegraben und Wasser getrunken und habe mit meinen Fußsohlen ausgetrocknet alle Flüsse Ägyptens.« 26 Hast du nicht gehört, dass ich es lange zuvor bereitet und von Anfang an geplant habe? Jetzt aber habe ich’s kommen lassen, dass du feste Städte zerstören solltest zu Steinhaufen, 27 und ihre Einwohner sollten ohne Kraft werden und sich fürchten und zuschanden werden und wie Feldgras werden und wie grünes Kraut, wie Gras auf den Dächern, das vor dem Ostwind verdorrt. (Ps 129:6) 28 Ich weiß von deinem Aufstehen und Sitzen, von deinem Ausziehen und Einziehen und dass du tobst gegen mich. 29 Weil du nun gegen mich tobst und dein Stolz vor meine Ohren gekommen ist, will ich dir meinen Ring in die Nase legen und meinen Zaum in dein Maul und will dich den Weg wieder zurückführen, den du gekommen bist. 30 Und das sei dir, Hiskia, ein Zeichen: In diesem Jahr isst man, was von selber nachwächst, im nächsten Jahr, was auch dann noch wächst; im dritten Jahr sät und erntet, pflanzt Weinberge und esst ihre Früchte. 31 Und die Erretteten vom Hause Juda und was übrig geblieben ist werden von Neuem nach unten Wurzeln schlagen und oben Frucht tragen. (Isa 27:6) 32 Denn von Jerusalem werden ausgehen, die übrig geblieben sind, und die Erretteten vom Berge Zion. Solches wird tun der Eifer des HERRN Zebaoth. (Isa 9:6) 33 Darum spricht der HERR über den König von Assyrien: Er soll nicht in diese Stadt kommen und soll auch keinen Pfeil hineinschießen und mit keinem Schild gegen sie vorrücken und soll keinen Wall gegen sie aufschütten, 34 sondern auf dem Wege, den er gekommen ist, soll er zurückkehren und nicht in diese Stadt kommen, spricht der HERR. 35 Denn ich will diese Stadt beschirmen, dass ich sie errette um meinetwillen und um meines Knechtes David willen. (Isa 31:5; Isa 38:6) 36 Da fuhr aus der Engel des HERRN und schlug im Lager der Assyrer hundertfünfundachtzigtausend Mann. Und als man sich früh am Morgen aufmachte, siehe, da lag alles voller Leichen. (Isa 17:14; Isa 31:8) 37 Und Sanherib, der König von Assyrien, brach auf, zog ab, kehrte zurück und blieb zu Ninive. 38 Es begab sich aber, als er anbetete im Hause Nisrochs, seines Gottes, erschlugen ihn seine Söhne Adrammelech und Sarezer mit dem Schwert, und sie flohen ins Land Ararat. Und sein Sohn Asarhaddon wurde König an seiner statt.

Délivrance d'Ezéchias et de Juda

1 A l'écoute de ce rapport, le roi Ezéchias déchira ses habits, se couvrit d'un sac et alla dans la maison de l'Eternel. 2 Il envoya Eliakim, le chef du palais royal, Shebna, le secrétaire, et les plus anciens des prêtres, tous couverts de sacs, vers le prophète Esaïe, fils d'Amots. 3 Ils lui dirent: «Voici ce que dit Ezéchias: Ce jour est un jour d'angoisse, de punition et de honte, car les enfants sont près de sortir du ventre maternel et il n'y a pas de force pour l'accouchement. 4 Peut-être l'Eternel, ton Dieu, a-t-il entendu les paroles de Rabshaké, l'homme que le roi d'Assyrie, son seigneur, a envoyé pour insulter le Dieu vivant, et peut-être l'Eternel, ton Dieu, punira-t-il les paroles qu'il a entendues. Fais donc monter une prière pour le reste qui subsiste encore!» 5 Les serviteurs du roi Ezéchias allèrent donc trouver Esaïe, 6 et celui-ci leur dit: «Vous transmettrez le message suivant à votre maître: ‘Voici ce que dit l'Eternel: Ne te laisse pas effrayer par les paroles que tu as entendues et par lesquelles les serviteurs du roi d'Assyrie m'ont insulté. 7 Je vais mettre en lui un état d'esprit tel que, sur une nouvelle qu'il recevra, il retournera dans son pays, et là-bas je le ferai tomber par l'épée.’» 8 Rabshaké se retira et alla rejoindre le roi d'Assyrie au beau milieu de son combat contre Libna, car il avait appris son départ de Lakis. 9 C'est alors que le roi d'Assyrie reçut une nouvelle au sujet de Tirhaka, le roi d'Ethiopie. On lui dit: «Il s'est mis en marche pour te faire la guerre.» A cette nouvelle, il envoya des messagers à Ezéchias 10 avec l'ordre de dire à Ezéchias, le roi de Juda: «Que ton Dieu, celui dans lequel tu places ta confiance, ne te trompe pas en prétendant que Jérusalem ne sera pas livrée entre les mains du roi d'Assyrie. 11 Tu as bien appris ce que les rois d'Assyrie ont fait à tous les pays, la manière dont ils les ont voués à la destruction. Et toi, tu serais délivré? 12 Les dieux des nations que mes prédécesseurs ont détruites les ont-ils délivrées? Considère ce qui est arrivé à Gozan, Charan, Retseph et aux Edénites qui se trouvent à Telassar! 13 Où sont les rois de Hamath, d'Arpad, de la ville de Sepharvaïm, d'Héna et d'Ivva?» 14 Ezéchias prit la lettre de la main des messagers et la lut. Puis il monta à la maison de l'Eternel et la déroula devant l'Eternel. 15 Il lui adressa cette prière: 16 «Eternel, maître de l'univers, Dieu d'Israël, toi qui sièges entre les chérubins^[1], c'est toi qui es le seul Dieu de tous les royaumes de la terre, c'est toi qui as fait le ciel et la terre. (Ex 25:18) 17 Eternel, tends l'oreille et écoute! Eternel, ouvre tes yeux et regarde! Ecoute toutes les paroles que Sanchérib a envoyées pour insulter le Dieu vivant! 18 Il est vrai, Eternel, que les rois d'Assyrie ont dévasté tous les pays et leur territoire 19 et qu'ils ont jeté leurs dieux dans le feu, mais ce n'étaient pas des dieux: ils avaient été fabriqués par la main des hommes, c'était du bois et de la pierre. Voilà pourquoi ils ont pu les faire disparaître. 20 Maintenant, Eternel, notre Dieu, délivre-nous de Sanchérib et que tous les royaumes de la terre reconnaissent que toi seul es l'Eternel!» 21 Alors Esaïe, fils d'Amots, fit dire à Ezéchias: «Voici ce que dit l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël: J'ai entendu la prière que tu m'as adressée au sujet de Sanchérib, le roi d'Assyrie. 22 Voici la parole que l'Eternel a prononcée contre lui: »Elle te méprise, elle se moque de toi, la vierge, la fille de Sion. Elle hoche la tête sur toi, la fille de Jérusalem. 23 Qui as-tu défié et insulté? A qui t'es-tu attaqué par tes paroles? Tu as lancé un regard insolent vers le Saint d'Israël! 24 Par l'intermédiaire de tes serviteurs, tu as défié le Seigneur, tu as dit: ‘C'est grâce à mes nombreux chars que j'ai gravi le sommet des montagnes, les pentes du Liban. Je couperai les plus grands de ses cèdres, les plus beaux de ses cyprès, et j'atteindrai sa dernière cime, sa forêt pareille à un verger. 25 J'ai creusé des puits et j'en ai bu l'eau. Je mettrai à sec, avec la plante de mes pieds, tous les fleuves de l'Egypte.’ 26 »N'as-tu pas appris que j'ai préparé ces événements depuis longtemps, que je les ai prévus dans un lointain passé? Maintenant j'ai permis qu'ils s'accomplissent et que tu transformes des villes fortifiées en tas de ruines. 27 Leurs habitants sont impuissants, épouvantés et pleins de honte, ils sont comme l'herbe des champs et la tendre verdure, comme le gazon des toits et le champ avant que le blé ne soit mûr. 28 »Mais je sais quand tu t'assieds, quand tu sors et quand tu entres, et quand tu es furieux contre moi. 29 Oui, tu es furieux contre moi et ton arrogance est montée à mes oreilles. C'est pourquoi je vais mettre mon anneau à tes narines et mon mors entre tes lèvres, et je vais te faire repartir par le chemin que tu as pris à l'aller. 30 »Voici ce qui te servira de signe: on mangera cette année ce que produit le grain tombé en terre, et une deuxième année ce qui pousse tout seul, mais la troisième année semez, moissonnez, plantez des vignes et mangez-en le fruit! 31 Les rescapés de la communauté de Juda, ceux qui seront restés, plongeront de nouvelles racines vers le bas et porteront du fruit vers le haut. 32 En effet, un reste sortira de Jérusalem, et du mont Sion des rescapés. Voilà ce que fera le zèle de l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers. 33 »C'est pourquoi, voici ce que dit l'Eternel à l'intention du roi d'Assyrie: Il n'entrera pas dans cette ville, il n'y tirera pas de flèches, il ne lui opposera pas de boucliers et ne construira pas de retranchements contre elle. 34 Il repartira par le chemin qu'il a pris à l'aller et il n'entrera pas dans cette ville, déclare l'Eternel. 35 Je protégerai cette ville pour la sauver à cause de moi-même et à cause de mon serviteur David.» 36 L'ange de l'Eternel sortit et frappa 185'000 hommes dans le camp des Assyriens. Quand on se leva le matin, ce n'étaient plus que des cadavres. 37 Alors Sanchérib, le roi d'Assyrie, leva le camp et repartit, et il resta à Ninive. 38 Un jour où il était prosterné dans le temple de son dieu Nisroc, ses fils Adrammélec et Sharetser le frappèrent de l'épée avant de se réfugier au pays d'Ararat. Son fils Esar-Haddon devint roi à sa place.
