1There was a man of Benjamin whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, son of Zeror, son of Becorath, son of Aphiah, a Benjaminite, a man of wealth. (1Sa 14:51; 1Ch 8:33; 1Ch 9:39)2And he had a son whose name was Saul, a handsome young man. There was not a man among the people of Israel more handsome than he. From his shoulders upward he was taller than any of the people. (1Sa 8:16; 1Sa 10:23)3Now the donkeys of Kish, Saul’s father, were lost. So Kish said to Saul his son, “Take one of the young men with you, and arise, go and look for the donkeys.”4And he passed through the hill country of Ephraim and passed through the land of Shalishah, but they did not find them. And they passed through the land of Shaalim, but they were not there. Then they passed through the land of Benjamin, but did not find them. (Jos 24:33; 2Ki 4:42)5When they came to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant[1] who was with him, “Come, let us go back, lest my father cease to care about the donkeys and become anxious about us.” (1Sa 10:2)6But he said to him, “Behold, there is a man of God in this city, and he is a man who is held in honor; all that he says comes true. So now let us go there. Perhaps he can tell us the way we should go.” (De 33:1; Jud 13:6; 1Sa 3:19; 1Ki 13:1)7Then Saul said to his servant, “But if we go, what can we bring the man? For the bread in our sacks is gone, and there is no present to bring to the man of God. What do we have?” (1Ki 14:3; 2Ki 4:42; 2Ki 8:8)8The servant answered Saul again, “Here, I have with me a quarter of a shekel[2] of silver, and I will give it to the man of God to tell us our way.”9(Formerly in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, he said, “Come, let us go to the seer,” for today’s “prophet” was formerly called a seer.) (Ge 25:22)10And Saul said to his servant, “Well said; come, let us go.” So they went to the city where the man of God was.11As they went up the hill to the city, they met young women coming out to draw water and said to them, “Is the seer here?” (Ge 24:11)12They answered, “He is; behold, he is just ahead of you. Hurry. He has come just now to the city, because the people have a sacrifice today on the high place. (Ge 31:54; 1Sa 10:5; 1Sa 16:2; 1Sa 20:29; 1Ki 3:2)13As soon as you enter the city you will find him, before he goes up to the high place to eat. For the people will not eat till he comes, since he must bless the sacrifice; afterward those who are invited will eat. Now go up, for you will meet him immediately.”14So they went up to the city. As they were entering the city, they saw Samuel coming out toward them on his way up to the high place.15Now the day before Saul came, the Lord had revealed to Samuel: (Ru 4:4; 1Sa 15:1; Ac 13:21)16“Tomorrow about this time I will send to you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be prince[3] over my people Israel. He shall save my people from the hand of the Philistines. For I have seen[4] my people, because their cry has come to me.” (Ex 2:25; Ex 3:7; Ex 3:9; 1Sa 10:1)17When Samuel saw Saul, the Lord told him, “Here is the man of whom I spoke to you! He it is who shall restrain my people.” (1Sa 16:12)18Then Saul approached Samuel in the gate and said, “Tell me where is the house of the seer?”19Samuel answered Saul, “I am the seer. Go up before me to the high place, for today you shall eat with me, and in the morning I will let you go and will tell you all that is on your mind.20As for your donkeys that were lost three days ago, do not set your mind on them, for they have been found. And for whom is all that is desirable in Israel? Is it not for you and for all your father’s house?” (1Sa 9:3)21Saul answered, “Am I not a Benjaminite, from the least of the tribes of Israel? And is not my clan the humblest of all the clans of the tribe of Benjamin? Why then have you spoken to me in this way?” (Jud 6:15; Jud 20:46; Jud 21:6; 1Sa 15:17; Ps 68:27)22Then Samuel took Saul and his young man and brought them into the hall and gave them a place at the head of those who had been invited, who were about thirty persons.23And Samuel said to the cook, “Bring the portion I gave you, of which I said to you, ‘Put it aside.’”24So the cook took up the leg and what was on it and set them before Saul. And Samuel said, “See, what was kept is set before you. Eat, because it was kept for you until the hour appointed, that you might eat with the guests.”[5] So Saul ate with Samuel that day. (Ex 29:22; Ex 29:27; Le 7:32; Eze 24:4)25And when they came down from the high place into the city, a bed was spread for Saul on the roof, and he lay down to sleep.[6] (De 22:8; 2Sa 11:2; 2Sa 16:22; Ne 8:16; Mt 24:17; Ac 10:9)26Then at the break of dawn[7] Samuel called to Saul on the roof, “Up, that I may send you on your way.” So Saul arose, and both he and Samuel went out into the street.27As they were going down to the outskirts of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to pass on before us, and when he has passed on, stop here yourself for a while, that I may make known to you the word of God.”

Und Kisch sprach zu seinem Sohn Saul: Nimm einen der Knechte mit dir, mach dich auf, geh hin und suche die Eselinnen.4Und sie gingen durch das Gebirge Ephraim und durch das Gebiet von Schalischa und fanden sie nicht; sie gingen durch das Gebiet von Schaalim, aber da waren sie nicht; sie gingen durchs Gebiet von Benjamin und fanden sie nicht.5Als sie aber ins Gebiet von Zuf kamen, sprach Saul zu dem Knecht, der bei ihm war: Komm, lass uns wieder heimgehen; mein Vater könnte sich sonst statt um die Eselinnen um uns sorgen. (1Sa 10:2)6Der aber sprach zu ihm: Siehe, es ist ein berühmter Mann Gottes in dieser Stadt; alles, was er sagt, das trifft ein. Nun lass uns dahin gehen; vielleicht sagt er uns unsern Weg, den wir gehen müssen.7Saul aber sprach zu seinem Knecht: Wenn wir schon hingehen, was bringen wir dem Mann? Denn das Brot in unserm Sack ist verzehrt, und wir haben keine Gabe, die wir dem Mann Gottes bringen könnten. Was haben wir sonst? (1Ki 13:7; 2Ki 8:8)8Der Knecht antwortete Saul abermals und sprach: Siehe, ich hab einen Viertel-Silberschekel bei mir; den will ich dem Mann Gottes geben, dass er uns unsern Weg sage.9[1] Vorzeiten sagte man in Israel, wenn man ging, Gott zu befragen: Kommt, lasst uns zu dem Seher gehen! Denn die man jetzt Propheten nennt, die nannte man vorzeiten Seher. –10[2] Saul sprach zu seinem Knecht: Du hast recht geredet; komm, lass uns gehen! Und als sie hingingen zu der Stadt, wo der Mann Gottes war,11und den Aufgang zur Stadt hinaufstiegen, trafen sie Mädchen, die herausgingen, um Wasser zu schöpfen. Zu ihnen sprachen sie: Ist der Seher hier? – (Ge 24:11)12Sie antworteten ihnen: Ja, siehe, da ist er; eile, denn er ist heute in die Stadt gekommen, weil das Volk heute ein Opferfest hat auf der Höhe.13Wenn ihr in die Stadt kommt, so werdet ihr ihn finden, bevor er hinaufgeht auf die Höhe, um zu essen. Denn das Volk wird nicht essen, ehe er kommt; er segnet erst das Opfer, danach essen die, die geladen sind. Darum geht hinauf, denn jetzt werdet ihr ihn treffen.14Und als sie hinauf zur Stadt kamen und in die Stadt eintraten, siehe, da kam Samuel heraus ihnen entgegen und wollte auf die Höhe gehen.
Samuel salbt Saul zum König
15Aber der HERR hatte Samuel das Ohr aufgetan, einen Tag bevor Saul kam, und gesagt:16Morgen um diese Zeit will ich einen Mann zu dir senden aus dem Lande Benjamin, den sollst du zum Fürsten salben über mein Volk Israel, dass er mein Volk errette aus der Philister Hand. Denn ich habe das Elend meines Volks angesehen, und sein Schreien ist vor mich gekommen. (Ex 2:23; Ex 3:7)17Als nun Samuel Saul sah, tat ihm der HERR kund: Siehe, das ist der Mann, von dem ich dir gesagt habe, dass er über mein Volk herrschen soll.18Da trat Saul auf Samuel zu im Tor und sprach: Sage mir doch, wo ist hier das Haus des Sehers?19Samuel antwortete Saul: Ich bin der Seher. Geh vor mir hinauf auf die Höhe, denn ihr sollt heute mit mir essen; morgen früh will ich dich ziehen lassen, und alles, was in deinem Herzen ist, will ich dir kundtun.20Und um die Eselinnen, die du vor drei Tagen verloren hast, sorge dich jetzt nicht; sie sind gefunden. Wem gehört denn alles, was wertvoll ist in Israel? Gehört es nicht dir und dem ganzen Hause deines Vaters?21Saul antwortete: Bin ich nicht ein Benjaminiter und aus einem der kleinsten Stämme Israels, und ist nicht mein Geschlecht das geringste unter allen Geschlechtern des Stammes Benjamin? Warum sagst du mir solches? (Jud 6:15; 1Sa 15:17)22Samuel aber nahm Saul und seinen Knecht und führte sie in die Halle und setzte sie obenan unter die Geladenen; und das waren etwa dreißig Mann.23Und Samuel sprach zu dem Koch: Gib das Stück her, das ich dir gab und befahl, du solltest es bei dir behalten.24Da trug der Koch eine Keule auf und den Fettschwanz. Und er legte sie Saul vor und sprach: Siehe, hier ist das Übriggebliebene, lege es vor dich hin und iss; denn als ich das Volk einlud, ist es für dich aufbewahrt worden für diese Stunde. So aß Saul mit Samuel an jenem Tage.25Und als sie hinabgegangen waren von der Höhe der Stadt, machten sie Saul ein Lager auf dem Dach,26und er legte sich schlafen. Und als die Morgenröte aufging, rief Samuel zum Dach hinauf und sprach zu Saul: Steh auf, dass ich dich geleite! Und Saul stand auf, und die beiden gingen miteinander hinaus, er und Samuel.27Und als sie hinabkamen an das Ende der Stadt, sprach Samuel zu Saul: Sage dem Knecht, dass er uns vorangehe – und er ging voran –, du aber steh jetzt still, dass ich dir kundtue, was Gott gesagt hat.
1Il y avait un homme de Benjamin, appelé Kis. Il était fils d'Abiel, petit-fils de Tseror, descendant de Becorath, d'Aphiach, lui-même fils d'un Benjaminite. C'était un vaillant guerrier.2Il avait un fils du nom de Saül, qui était jeune et beau, plus beau que tous les Israélites, et qui les dépassait tous d'une tête.3Les ânesses de Kis, le père de Saül, s'égarèrent et Kis dit à son fils Saül: «Prends avec toi l'un des serviteurs, lève-toi et va à la recherche des ânesses.»4Saül traversa la région montagneuse d'Ephraïm et le pays de Shalisha sans les trouver; ils passèrent par le pays de Shaalim et elles n'y étaient pas; ils parcoururent le pays de Benjamin et ils ne les trouvèrent pas.5Ils étaient arrivés dans le pays de Tsuph, lorsque Saül dit au serviteur qui l'accompagnait: «Viens, retournons chez nous. Sinon mon père oubliera les ânesses et s'inquiétera pour nous.»6Le serviteur lui dit: «Il y a dans cette ville un homme de Dieu, et c'est un homme estimé. Tout ce qu'il dit arrive à coup sûr. Allons-y donc! Peut-être nous fera-t-il connaître le chemin que nous devons prendre.»7Saül dit à son serviteur: «Mais si nous y allons, qu'apporterons-nous à l'homme de Dieu? En effet, il n'y a plus de provisions dans nos sacs et nous n'avons aucun cadeau à lui offrir. Qu'avons-nous?»8Le serviteur reprit la parole et dit à Saül: «J'ai sur moi un peu d'argent; je le donnerai à l'homme de Dieu et il nous indiquera notre chemin.»9Quand on allait consulter Dieu, on disait autrefois en Israël: «Venez, allons trouver le voyant!» Celui qu'on appelle aujourd'hui «prophète» s'appelait en effet autrefois «voyant».10Saül dit à son serviteur: «Tu as raison. Viens, allons-y!» Et ils se rendirent à la ville où se trouvait l'homme de Dieu.11Alors qu'ils montaient à la ville, ils rencontrèrent des jeunes filles sorties pour puiser de l'eau et ils leur demandèrent: «Le voyant est-il ici?»12Elles leur répondirent: «Oui, il est devant toi, mais dépêche-toi: il est venu aujourd'hui en ville parce qu'il y a un sacrifice pour le peuple sur le haut lieu[1].13Dès que vous serez entrés dans la ville, vous pourrez le trouver avant qu'il ne monte au haut lieu pour manger. En effet, le peuple ne mangera pas avant son arrivée, parce qu'il doit bénir le sacrifice; après cela seulement, les invités mangeront. Montez donc, car vous le trouverez maintenant.»14Ils montèrent alors à la ville. Ils étaient arrivés au milieu de la ville quand ils rencontrèrent Samuel qui sortait pour monter au haut lieu.15Or, un jour avant l'arrivée de Saül, l'Eternel avait averti Samuel en disant:16«Demain, à cette heure-ci, je t'enverrai un homme du pays de Benjamin. Tu le désigneras par onction comme chef de mon peuple, d'Israël. Il sauvera mon peuple de l'oppression des Philistins. En effet, j'ai regardé mon peuple parce que son cri est venu jusqu'à moi.»17Lorsque Samuel eut aperçu Saül, l'Eternel lui dit: «Voici l'homme dont je t'ai parlé, c'est lui qui régnera sur mon peuple.»18Saül s'approcha de Samuel au milieu de la porte de la ville et lui dit: «Indique-moi, je t'en prie, où se trouve la maison du voyant.»19Samuel répondit à Saül: «C'est moi qui suis le voyant. Monte devant moi au haut lieu et vous mangerez aujourd'hui avec moi. Je te laisserai partir demain, après t'avoir donné réponse pour tout ce qui te préoccupe.20Ne t'inquiète pas pour les ânesses que tu as perdues il y a trois jours, car elles sont retrouvées. Et pour qui est réservé tout ce qu'il y a de précieux en Israël? N'est-ce pas pour toi et pour toute ta famille?»21Saül répondit: «Ne suis-je pas benjaminite, membre de l'une des plus petites tribus d'Israël, et mon clan n'est-il pas le plus insignifiant de tous ceux que compte la tribu de Benjamin? Pourquoi donc me tiens-tu ce discours?»22Samuel prit Saül et son serviteur, les fit entrer dans la salle et leur donna une place à la tête des invités. Il y avait là une trentaine d'hommes.23Samuel dit au cuisinier: «Sers la portion que je t'ai donnée en te disant de la mettre à part.»24Le cuisinier préleva la cuisse et ce qui l'entoure, et il la servit à Saül. Samuel dit: «Voici ce qui a été réservé. Sers-toi et mange, car on l'a gardé pour toi lorsque j'ai invité le peuple.» Ainsi, Saül mangea avec Samuel ce jour-là.25Ils redescendirent du haut lieu à la ville et Samuel s'entretint avec Saül sur la terrasse du toit.26Puis ils se levèrent de bon matin. A l'aurore, Samuel appela Saül sur le toit en disant: «Viens et je te laisserai partir.» Saül se leva et ils sortirent tous les deux, Samuel et lui.27Quand ils furent descendus à la limite de la ville, Samuel dit à Saül: «Dis à ton serviteur de passer devant nous.» Le serviteur passa devant. «Arrête-toi maintenant, reprit Samuel, et je vais te faire connaître la parole de Dieu.»
