1When Samuel became old, he made his sons judges over Israel. (De 16:18)2The name of his firstborn son was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah; they were judges in Beersheba.3Yet his sons did not walk in his ways but turned aside after gain. They took bribes and perverted justice. (Ex 18:21; Ex 23:8; De 16:19; Ps 15:5)4Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah (1Sa 7:17)5and said to him, “Behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations.” (De 17:14; 1Sa 8:19; Ho 13:10; Ac 13:21)6But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” And Samuel prayed to the Lord.7And the Lord said to Samuel, “Obey the voice of the people in all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them. (Ex 16:8; 1Sa 10:19)8According to all the deeds that they have done, from the day I brought them up out of Egypt even to this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are also doing to you.9Now then, obey their voice; only you shall solemnly warn them and show them the ways of the king who shall reign over them.” (1Sa 8:11)
Samuel’s Warning Against Kings
10So Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people who were asking for a king from him.11He said, “These will be the ways of the king who will reign over you: he will take your sons and appoint them to his chariots and to be his horsemen and to run before his chariots. (De 17:16; 1Sa 10:25; 1Sa 14:52)12And he will appoint for himself commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and some to plow his ground and to reap his harvest, and to make his implements of war and the equipment of his chariots. (Ge 45:6)13He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers.14He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive orchards and give them to his servants. (1Ki 21:7; Eze 46:18)15He will take the tenth of your grain and of your vineyards and give it to his officers and to his servants.16He will take your male servants and female servants and the best of your young men[1] and your donkeys, and put them to his work.17He will take the tenth of your flocks, and you shall be his slaves.18And in that day you will cry out because of your king, whom you have chosen for yourselves, but the Lord will not answer you in that day.” (Pr 1:28; Isa 1:15; Mic 3:4)
The Lord Grants Israel’s Request
19But the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel. And they said, “No! But there shall be a king over us,20that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.” (1Sa 8:5)21And when Samuel had heard all the words of the people, he repeated them in the ears of the Lord.22And the Lord said to Samuel, “Obey their voice and make them a king.” Samuel then said to the men of Israel, “Go every man to his city.” (1Sa 8:7; Ho 13:11)

So setze nun einen König über uns, der uns richte, wie ihn alle Völker haben. (De 17:14; Ac 13:21)6Das missfiel Samuel, dass sie sagten: Gib uns einen König, der uns richte. Und Samuel betete zum HERRN.7Der HERR aber sprach zu Samuel: Gehorche der Stimme des Volks in allem, was sie zu dir sagen; denn sie haben nicht dich, sondern mich verworfen, dass ich nicht mehr König über sie sein soll. (Ex 15:18; De 33:5; Ps 24:7; Ps 74:12; Ho 8:4)8So wie sie immer getan haben von dem Tage an, da ich sie aus Ägypten führte, bis auf diesen Tag, dass sie mich verlassen und andern Göttern gedient haben, so tun sie nun auch dir.9So gehorche nun ihrer Stimme. Doch warne sie und verkünde ihnen das Recht des Königs, der über sie herrschen wird.10Und Samuel sagte alle Worte des HERRN dem Volk, das von ihm einen König forderte,11und sprach: Das wird des Königs Recht sein, der über euch herrschen wird: Eure Söhne wird er nehmen für seinen Wagen und seine Gespanne, und dass sie vor seinem Wagen herlaufen,12und zu Hauptleuten über Tausend und über Fünfzig, und dass sie ihm seinen Acker bearbeiten und seine Ernte einsammeln und dass sie seine Kriegswaffen machen und was zu seinen Wagen gehört.13Eure Töchter aber wird er nehmen, dass sie Salben bereiten, kochen und backen.14Eure besten Äcker und Weinberge und Ölgärten wird er nehmen und seinen Großen geben.15Dazu von euren Kornfeldern und Weinbergen wird er den Zehnten nehmen und seinen Kämmerern und Großen geben.16Und eure Knechte und Mägde und eure besten Rinder[1] und eure Esel wird er nehmen und in seinen Dienst stellen.17Von euren Herden wird er den Zehnten nehmen, und ihr müsst seine Knechte sein.18Wenn ihr dann schreien werdet zu der Zeit über euren König, den ihr euch erwählt habt, so wird euch der HERR zu derselben Zeit nicht erhören. (Eze 8:18)19Aber das Volk weigerte sich, auf die Stimme Samuels zu hören, und sie sprachen: Nein, sondern ein König soll über uns sein,20dass wir auch seien wie alle Völker, dass uns unser König richte und vor uns her ausziehe und unsere Kriege führe!21Und als Samuel alle Worte des Volks gehört hatte, sagte er sie vor den Ohren des HERRN.22Der HERR aber sprach zu Samuel: Höre auf ihre Stimme und mache ihnen einen König. Und Samuel sprach zu den Männern Israels: Geht hin, ein jeder in seine Stadt.

Maintenant, établis sur nous un roi pour nous juger, comme on en trouve dans toutes les nations.»6Cela déplut à Samuel qu'ils disent: «Donne-nous un roi pour nous juger», et il pria l'Eternel.7L'Eternel dit à Samuel: «Ecoute le peuple dans tout ce qu'il te dira, car ce n'est pas toi qu'ils rejettent, c'est moi, afin que je ne règne plus sur eux.8Ils agissent envers toi comme ils l'ont toujours fait depuis que je les ai fait sortir d'Egypte jusqu'à aujourd'hui: ils m'ont abandonné pour servir d'autres dieux.9Ecoute-les donc, mais donne-leur des avertissements, fais-leur connaître les droits du roi qui régnera sur eux.»10Samuel rapporta toutes les paroles de l'Eternel au peuple qui lui demandait un roi.11Il dit: «Voici quels seront les droits du roi qui régnera sur vous. Il prendra vos fils et les mettra sur ses chars ou parmi ses cavaliers, ou encore ils devront courir devant son char.12Il fera d'eux des chefs de milliers et des chefs de cinquantaines. Il les emploiera à labourer ses terres, à récolter ses moissons, à fabriquer ses armes de guerre et l'équipement de ses chars.13Il prendra vos filles pour faire d'elles des parfumeuses, des cuisinières et des boulangères.14Il prendra la meilleure partie de vos champs, de vos vignes et de vos oliviers et la donnera à ses serviteurs.15Il prendra la dîme du produit de vos champs et de vos vignes et la donnera à ses serviteurs.16Il prendra vos esclaves et vos servantes, vos meilleurs bœufs et vos ânes et se servira d'eux pour ses travaux.17Il prendra la dîme de vos troupeaux et vous serez vous-mêmes ses esclaves.18Alors vous crierez contre votre roi, celui que vous vous serez choisi, mais l'Eternel ne vous exaucera pas.»19Le peuple refusa d'écouter Samuel. «Cela ne fait rien, dirent-ils, il y aura quand même un roi sur nous,20et nous aussi nous serons pareils à toutes les nations: notre roi nous jugera, il marchera à notre tête et conduira nos guerres.»21Après avoir entendu toutes les paroles du peuple, Samuel les répéta à l'Eternel,22et l'Eternel lui dit: «Ecoute-les et établis un roi sur eux.» Samuel dit aux hommes d'Israël: «Que chacun retourne dans sa ville.»
