And they consecrated his son Eleazar to have charge of the ark of the Lord. (2Sa 6:3)2From the day that the ark was lodged at Kiriath-jearim, a long time passed, some twenty years, and all the house of Israel lamented after the Lord.

3And Samuel said to all the house of Israel, “If you are returning to the Lord with all your heart, then put away the foreign gods and the Ashtaroth from among you and direct your heart to the Lord and serve him only, and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.” (Ge 35:2; De 6:13; De 10:20; De 13:4; De 30:2; Jos 24:14; Jos 24:23; Jud 2:13; Jud 10:16; 1Ki 8:48; 2Ch 19:3; 2Ch 30:19; Ezr 7:10; Isa 55:7; Ho 6:1; Joe 2:12; Mt 4:10; Lu 4:8)4So the people of Israel put away the Baals and the Ashtaroth, and they served the Lord only.5Then Samuel said, “Gather all Israel at Mizpah, and I will pray to the Lord for you.” (Jud 20:1)6So they gathered at Mizpah and drew water and poured it out before the Lord and fasted on that day and said there, “We have sinned against the Lord.” And Samuel judged the people of Israel at Mizpah. (Jud 10:10; 1Sa 7:5; 1Sa 31:13; 2Sa 14:14; Ne 9:1)7Now when the Philistines heard that the people of Israel had gathered at Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the people of Israel heard of it, they were afraid of the Philistines.8And the people of Israel said to Samuel, “Do not cease to cry out to the Lord our God for us, that he may save us from the hand of the Philistines.”9So Samuel took a nursing lamb and offered it as a whole burnt offering to the Lord. And Samuel cried out to the Lord for Israel, and the Lord answered him. (Ps 99:6; Jer 15:1)10As Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to attack Israel. But the Lord thundered with a mighty sound that day against the Philistines and threw them into confusion, and they were defeated before Israel. (1Sa 2:10; 2Sa 22:14; Ps 18:13)11And the men of Israel went out from Mizpah and pursued the Philistines and struck them, as far as below Beth-car.12Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen[1] and called its name Ebenezer;[2] for he said, “Till now the Lord has helped us.” (Ge 28:18; Ge 31:45; Ge 35:14; Jos 4:9; Jos 24:26)13So the Philistines were subdued and did not again enter the territory of Israel. And the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel. (Jud 13:1)14The cities that the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron to Gath, and Israel delivered their territory from the hand of the Philistines. There was peace also between Israel and the Amorites.15Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life. (Jud 2:16; 1Sa 7:6; 1Sa 12:11)16And he went on a circuit year by year to Bethel, Gilgal, and Mizpah. And he judged Israel in all these places.17Then he would return to Ramah, for his home was there, and there also he judged Israel. And he built there an altar to the Lord. (Jud 21:4; 1Sa 1:19; 1Sa 14:35)

(1Sa 6:21; 2Sa 6:2; 1Ch 13:6)3Samuel aber sprach zum ganzen Hause Israel: Wenn ihr euch von ganzem Herzen zu dem HERRN bekehren wollt, so tut von euch die fremden Götter und die Astarten und richtet euer Herz zu dem HERRN und dient ihm allein, so wird er euch erretten aus der Hand der Philister. (Ge 20:7; 1Sa 12:23; 1Ki 13:6; Jer 37:3; Jer 37:16)9Samuel nahm ein Milchlamm und opferte dem HERRN ein Brandopfer – als Ganzopfer – und schrie zum HERRN für Israel, und der HERR erhörte ihn.10Und während Samuel das Brandopfer opferte, kamen die Philister heran zum Kampf gegen Israel. Aber der HERR ließ donnern mit großem Schall über die Philister am selben Tage und schreckte sie, dass sie vor Israel geschlagen wurden. (Ge 35:5; Ex 14:24; Jos 10:10; Jud 4:15)11Da zogen die Männer Israels aus von Mizpa und jagten den Philistern nach und schlugen sie bis unterhalb von Bet-Kar.12Da nahm Samuel einen Stein und stellte ihn auf zwischen Mizpa und Schen und nannte ihn »Eben-Eser«[1] und sprach: Bis hierher hat uns der HERR geholfen.13So wurden die Philister gedemütigt und kamen nicht mehr in das Gebiet Israels. Und die Hand des HERRN lag schwer auf den Philistern, solange Samuel lebte.14Also fielen die Städte an Israel zurück, die die Philister ihnen genommen hatten, von Ekron bis Gat, und Israel riss ihr Gebiet aus der Hand der Philister. Und Israel hatte Frieden mit den Amoritern.15Samuel aber richtete Israel sein Leben lang (Jud 10:1; Jud 12:7)16und zog Jahr für Jahr umher und kam nach Bethel und Gilgal und Mizpa. Und wenn er Israel an allen diesen Orten gerichtet hatte,17kam er wieder nach Rama – denn da war sein Haus –, und dort richtete er Israel. Auch baute er dort dem HERRN einen Altar. (1Sa 1:19)

Vingt années avaient passé. Alors toute la communauté d'Israël poussa des gémissements vers l'Eternel.3Samuel dit à toute la communauté d'Israël: «Si c'est de tout votre cœur que vous revenez à l'Eternel, enlevez du milieu de vous les dieux étrangers et les Astartés, dirigez votre cœur vers l'Eternel et servez-le lui seul. Il vous délivrera alors de l'oppression des Philistins.»4Les Israélites enlevèrent du milieu d'eux les Baals[1] et les Astartés[2], et ils servirent l'Eternel seul.5Samuel dit: «Rassemblez tout Israël à Mitspa et je prierai l'Eternel pour vous.» Et ils se rassemblèrent à Mitspa.6Ils puisèrent de l'eau et la versèrent devant l'Eternel, et ils jeûnèrent ce jour-là en disant: «Nous avons péché contre l'Eternel!» Samuel jugea les Israélites à Mitspa.7Les Philistins apprirent que les Israélites s'étaient rassemblés à Mitspa, et les princes des Philistins montèrent pour attaquer Israël. A cette nouvelle, les Israélites eurent peur des Philistins,8et ils dirent à Samuel: «N'arrête pas de crier pour nous à l'Eternel, notre Dieu, afin qu'il nous sauve de la domination des Philistins.»9Samuel prit un tout jeune agneau et l'offrit tout entier en holocauste à l'Eternel. Il cria à l'Eternel pour Israël et l'Eternel l'exauça.10Pendant que Samuel offrait l'holocauste, les Philistins s'approchèrent pour attaquer Israël. L'Eternel fit gronder ce jour-là son tonnerre sur les Philistins et les mit en déroute. Ils furent battus devant Israël.11Les hommes d'Israël sortirent de Mitspa, poursuivirent les Philistins et les battirent jusqu'au-dessous de Beth-Car.12Samuel prit une pierre qu'il plaça entre Mitspa et Shen, et il l'appela Eben-Ezer[3] en disant: «Jusqu'ici l'Eternel nous a secourus.»13Ainsi, les Philistins furent humiliés et ils ne vinrent plus sur le territoire d'Israël. La main de l'Eternel fut contre les Philistins pendant toute la vie de Samuel.14Les villes que les Philistins avaient prises à Israël retournèrent à Israël, depuis Ekron jusqu'à Gath, avec leur territoire; Israël les arracha à la domination des Philistins. Il y eut aussi paix entre Israël et les Amoréens.15Samuel fut juge en Israël pendant toute sa vie.16Il allait chaque année faire le tour de Béthel, de Guilgal et de Mitspa, et il jugeait Israël dans toutes ces villes.17Puis il revenait à Rama, où se trouvait sa maison. Il y jugeait Israël et il construisit là un autel en l'honneur de l'Eternel.
