1Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. (Lu 10:38; Lu 10:39)2It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill. I Am the Resurrection and the Life
17Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. (Joh 11:39)18Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles[3] off,19and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother. (Job 2:11; Joh 11:31)20So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house. Jesus Weeps
28When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in private, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” (Mt 26:18; Mr 14:14; Lu 13:13; Lu 22:11)29And when she heard it, she rose quickly and went to him.30Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him.31When the Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary rise quickly and go out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there. (Joh 11:19)32Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” (Joh 11:21)33When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved[5] in his spirit and greatly troubled. Jesus Raises Lazarus
38Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. (Isa 22:16; Mt 27:60; Mr 15:46; Lu 24:2; Joh 11:33; Joh 20:1)39Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days.” (Joh 11:17)40Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?” (Joh 11:4; Joh 11:25; Ro 6:4)41So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. (Joh 17:1)42I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me.” (Mt 26:53; Joh 3:17; Joh 12:29; Joh 12:30; Joh 17:8; Joh 17:21)43When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.”44The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. The Plot to Kill Jesus
45Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what he did, believed in him, (Joh 2:23; Joh 11:19; Joh 12:11; Ac 9:42)46but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.47So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the council and said, “What are we to do? For this man performs many signs. (Mt 5:22; Mt 26:3; Joh 12:19; Ac 4:16)48If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.” (Joh 6:15; Joh 18:36; Joh 18:37; Ac 21:28)49But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all. (Mt 26:3; Joh 11:51; Joh 18:13)50Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.” (Joh 18:14)51He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, (Ex 28:30; Nu 27:21; 1Sa 23:9; 1Sa 30:7; Ezr 2:63; Ne 7:65; Joh 11:49)52and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. (Isa 49:6; Joh 10:16; 1Jo 2:2)53So from that day on they made plans to put him to death. (Joh 7:1)54Jesus therefore no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there to the region near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim, and there he stayed with the disciples. (Joh 7:1; Joh 7:4)55Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves. (2Ch 18:28; 2Ch 30:17; 2Ch 30:18; Lu 2:42; Joh 6:4; Ac 21:24)56They were looking for[6] Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think? That he will not come to the feast at all?” (Joh 7:11)57Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should let them know, so that they might arrest him.

Car cet homme fait beaucoup de miracles.48Si nous le laissons faire, tous croiront en lui, et les Romains viendront détruire et notre ville et notre nation.49L'un d'eux, Caïphe, qui était souverain sacrificateur cette année-là, leur dit: Vous n'y entendez rien;50vous ne réfléchissez pas qu'il est dans votre intérêt qu'un seul homme meure pour le peuple, et que la nation entière ne périsse pas.51Or, il ne dit pas cela de lui-même; mais étant souverain sacrificateur cette année-là, il prophétisa que Jésus devait mourir pour la nation.52Et ce n'était pas pour la nation seulement; c'était aussi afin de réunir en un seul corps les enfants de Dieu dispersés.53Dès ce jour, ils résolurent de le faire mourir.54C'est pourquoi Jésus ne se montra plus ouvertement parmi les Juifs; mais il se retira dans la contrée voisine du désert, dans une ville appelée Éphraïm; et là il demeurait avec ses disciples.55La Pâque des Juifs était proche. Et beaucoup de gens du pays montèrent à Jérusalem avant la Pâque, pour se purifier.56Ils cherchaient Jésus, et ils se disaient les uns aux autres dans le temple: Que vous en semble? Ne viendra-t-il pas à la fête?57Or, les principaux sacrificateurs et les pharisiens avaient donné l'ordre que, si quelqu'un savait où il était, il le déclarât, afin qu'on se saisît de lui.
