Gideon Defeats Zebah and Zalmunna

1 Then the men of Ephraim said to him, “What is this that you have done to us, not to call us when you went to fight against Midian?” And they accused him fiercely. (Jud 12:1; 2Sa 19:41) 2 And he said to them, “What have I done now in comparison with you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the grape harvest of Abiezer? 3 God has given into your hands the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb. What have I been able to do in comparison with you?” Then their anger^[1] against him subsided when he said this. (Jud 7:24; Pr 15:1) 4 And Gideon came to the Jordan and crossed over, he and the 300 men who were with him, exhausted yet pursuing. (Jud 7:6) 5 So he said to the men of Succoth, “Please give loaves of bread to the people who follow me, for they are exhausted, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.” (Ge 33:17; Ps 60:6) 6 And the officials of Succoth said, “Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your hand, that we should give bread to your army?” (1Sa 25:11; 1Ki 20:11) 7 So Gideon said, “Well then, when the Lord has given Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, I will flail your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.” (Jud 8:16) 8 And from there he went up to Penuel, and spoke to them in the same way, and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered. (Ge 32:30; 1Ki 12:25) 9 And he said to the men of Penuel, “When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.” (Jud 8:17; 1Ki 22:27) 10 Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor with their army, about 15,000 men, all who were left of all the army of the people of the East, for there had fallen 120,000 men who drew the sword. 11 And Gideon went up by the way of the tent dwellers east of Nobah and Jogbehah and attacked the army, for the army felt secure. (Nu 32:35; Nu 32:42; Jud 18:27) 12 And Zebah and Zalmunna fled, and he pursued them and captured the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and he threw all the army into a panic. (Ps 83:11) 13 Then Gideon the son of Joash returned from the battle by the ascent of Heres. 14 And he captured a young man of Succoth and questioned him. And he wrote down for him the officials and elders of Succoth, seventy-seven men. 15 And he came to the men of Succoth and said, “Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, about whom you taunted me, saying, ‘Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your hand, that we should give bread to your men who are exhausted?’” (Jud 8:6) 16 And he took the elders of the city, and he took thorns of the wilderness and briers and with them taught the men of Succoth a lesson. 17 And he broke down the tower of Penuel and killed the men of the city. (1Ki 12:25) 18 Then he said to Zebah and Zalmunna, “Where are the men whom you killed at Tabor?” They answered, “As you are, so were they. Every one of them resembled the son of a king.” (Jud 4:6) 19 And he said, “They were my brothers, the sons of my mother. As the Lord lives, if you had saved them alive, I would not kill you.” (Ru 3:13) 20 So he said to Jether his firstborn, “Rise and kill them!” But the young man did not draw his sword, for he was afraid, because he was still a young man. 21 Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, “Rise yourself and fall upon us, for as the man is, so is his strength.” And Gideon arose and killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and he took the crescent ornaments that were on the necks of their camels. Gideon’s Ephod

22 Then the men of Israel said to Gideon, “Rule over us, you and your son and your grandson also, for you have saved us from the hand of Midian.” 23 Gideon said to them, “I will not rule over you, and my son will not rule over you; the Lord will rule over you.” (1Sa 8:7; 1Sa 10:19; 1Sa 12:12; 1Sa 12:17; 1Sa 12:19)

24 And Gideon said to them, “Let me make a request of you: every one of you give me the earrings from his spoil.” (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.) (Ge 37:25; Ge 37:28; Ge 37:36; Ge 39:1)

25 And they answered, “We will willingly give them.” And they spread a cloak, and every man threw in it the earrings of his spoil. 26 And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was 1,700 shekels^[2] of gold, besides the crescent ornaments and the pendants and the purple garments worn by the kings of Midian, and besides the collars that were around the necks of their camels. (Jud 8:21; Isa 3:19) 27 And Gideon made an ephod of it and put it in his city, in Ophrah. And all Israel whored after it there, and it became a snare to Gideon and to his family. 28 So Midian was subdued before the people of Israel, and they raised their heads no more. And the land had rest forty years in the days of Gideon. (Jud 3:11; Jud 5:31)

The Death of Gideon

29 Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and lived in his own house. (Jud 6:32; Jud 7:1) 30 Now Gideon had seventy sons, his own offspring,^[3] for he had many wives. (Jud 9:2; Jud 9:5) 31 And his concubine who was in Shechem also bore him a son, and he called his name Abimelech. (Jud 9:1) 32 And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age and was buried in the tomb of Joash his father, at Ophrah of the Abiezrites. (Ge 15:15; Ge 25:8; Jud 6:24; Job 5:26)

33 As soon as Gideon died, the people of Israel turned again and whored after the Baals and made Baal-berith their god. (Jud 2:19; Jud 8:27; Jud 9:4; Jud 9:46)

34 And the people of Israel did not remember the Lord their God, who had delivered them from the hand of all their enemies on every side, (Ps 78:11; Ps 78:42; Ps 106:13; Ps 106:21)

35 and they did not show steadfast love to the family of Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) in return for all the good that he had done to Israel. (Jud 9:16)

Gobierno y muerte de Gedeón

1 Entonces los hombres de Efraín le dijeron: ¿Qué cosa es esta que nos has hecho, de no llamarnos cuando fuiste a la campaña contra Madián? Y lo increparon con aspereza. 2 Pero él les dijo: ¿Qué he hecho yo en comparación con vosotros? ¿Acaso no son mejores los rebuscos de Efraín que la vendimia de Abiezer? 3 ’Elohim ha entregado en vuestras manos a Oreb y a Zeeb, jefes de Madián, ¿qué podía hacer yo en comparación con vosotros? Entonces su enojo se aplacó cuando dijo esto. 4 Entretanto Gedeón había llegado al Jordán, y lo había pasado, él y los trescientos hombres que tenía consigo, los cuales estaban cansados, pero continuaban la persecución. 5 Y dijo a los hombres de Sucot: Os ruego que deis panes a la gente que me sigue, porque están cansados, y estoy persiguiendo a Zeba y a Zalmuna, reyes de Madián. 6 Pero los gobernantes de Sucot le respondieron: ¿Está ya en tu poder la mano de Zeba y Zalmuna, para que demos pan a tu tropa? 7 A lo que respondió Gedeón: Por esto, cuando YHVH haya entregado en mi mano a Zeba y a Zalmuna, trillaré vuestra carne con espinos y abrojos del desierto. 8 Y subió de allí a Peniel, y les habló de la misma manera, y los hombres de Peniel le respondieron de la misma manera que los hombres de Sucot. 9 Entonces él habló también a los hombres de Peniel, diciendo: Cuando regrese en paz, derribaré esta torre. 10 Y Zeba y Zalmuna estaban en Carcor, y su ejército con ellos, como de quince mil hombres, todos los que habían quedado de todo el campamento de los orientales, pues habían caído ciento veinte mil hombres armados de espada. 11 Así, Gedeón subió por la vía de los que habitan en tiendas, al oriente de Noba y de Jogbeá, y atacó el campamento, que se hallaba desguarnecido. 12 Y huyeron Zeba y Zalmuna, pero él fue en su persecución y capturó a los dos reyes de Madián, a Zeba y a Zalmuna, e hizo estremecer a todo su ejército. 13 Y volviendo de la batalla por la cuesta de Hares, Gedeón ben Joás 14 prendió e interrogó a un joven de los de Sucot, el cual le dio por escrito los nombres de los principales de Sucot y de sus ancianos: setenta y siete varones. 15 Y llegando ante los hombres de Sucot, les dijo: Mirad a Zeba y a Zalmuna, acerca de quienes os mofasteis de mí, diciéndome: ¿Está ya en tu poder la mano de Zeba y de Zalmuna, para que demos pan a tus hombres cansados? 16 Y tomó a los ancianos de la ciudad, y azotó con espinos y abrojos del desierto a los varones de Sucot. 17 Asimismo derribó la torre de Peniel, y mató a los varones de la ciudad. 18 Luego preguntó a Zeba y a Zalmuna: ¿Cómo eran los hombres que matasteis en Tabor? Y ellos respondieron: Como tú, así eran ellos, cada uno con apariencia de hijos del rey. 19 Y él dijo: ¡Mis hermanos! ¡Los hijos de mi misma madre! Vive YHVH, que no os mataría si no les hubierais dado muerte. 20 Y dijo a Jéter su primogénito: ¡Levántate y mátalos! Pero el joven no desenvainó su espada, pues tuvo temor, porque aún era muchacho. 21 Entonces dijeron Zeba y Zalmuna: ¡Levántate tú y arremete contra nosotros, pues como es el varón, tal es su valentía! Y Gedeón se levantó y mató a Zeba y a Zalmuna, y tomó las lunetas que sus camellos traían al cuello. 22 Y los hombres de Israel dijeron a Gedeón: Gobierna tú, y tu hijo, y el hijo de tu hijo sobre nosotros, pues nos has librado de la mano de Madián. 23 Pero Gedeón respondió: Yo no gobernaré sobre vosotros, ni mi hijo gobernará sobre vosotros. YHVH gobernará sobre vosotros. 24 Luego Gedeón les dijo: Os haré una petición: que cada uno me dé los zarcillos de su botín (pues tenían zarcillos de oro, porque eran ismaelitas). 25 Ellos dijeron: Con gusto te los daremos. Y tendieron el manto, y cada uno echó allí los zarcillos de su botín. 26 Y el peso de los zarcillos de oro que él pidió fue mil setecientos siclos de oro, aparte de las lunetas, los pendientes y los vestidos de púrpura que llevaban los reyes de Madián, y aparte de los collares que llevaban sus camellos al cuello. 27 Y Gedeón hizo con ellos un efod y lo colocó en su ciudad, en Ofra, y todo Israel se prostituyó allí por aquelloº, y se tornó en una trampa para Gedeon y su casa. 28 Así fue humillado Madián ante los hijos de Israel, y no volvieron a levantar cabeza. Y la tierra tuvo cuarenta años de descanso en los días de Gedeón. 29 Y Jerobaal ben Joás se fue y habitó en su propia casa. 30 Y tuvo Gedeón setenta hijos salidos de su muslo, porque tenía muchas mujeres. 31 Y su concubina, que vivía en Siquem, también ella le dio a luz un hijo, y le puso por nombre Abimelec. 32 Y Gedeón ben Joás murió en buena vejez, y fue sepultado en el sepulcro de Joás su padre, en Ofra de los abiezeritas. 33 Pero tan pronto como murió Gedeón, sucedió que los hijos de Israel volvieron a prostituirse en pos de los baales, e hicieron de Baal-berit su dios. 34 Y los hijos de Israel no se acordaron de YHVH su Dios, el cual los había librado de mano de todos sus enemigos alrededor. 35 Tampoco se mostraron agradecidos con la casa de Jerobaal (el cual es Gedeón), por todo el bien que él había hecho a Israel.
