Abimelech’s Conspiracy

1 Now Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem to his mother’s relatives and said to them and to the whole clan of his mother’s family, (Jud 8:31) 2 “Say in the ears of all the leaders of Shechem, ‘Which is better for you, that all seventy of the sons of Jerubbaal rule over you, or that one rule over you?’ Remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.” (Ge 29:14; Jud 8:30; Jud 9:1) 3 And his mother’s relatives spoke all these words on his behalf in the ears of all the leaders of Shechem, and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech, for they said, “He is our brother.” (Jud 9:18) 4 And they gave him seventy pieces of silver out of the house of Baal-berith with which Abimelech hired worthless and reckless fellows, who followed him. 5 And he went to his father’s house at Ophrah and killed his brothers the sons of Jerubbaal, seventy men, on one stone. But Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left, for he hid himself. (Jud 6:24; 2Ki 11:1) 6 And all the leaders of Shechem came together, and all Beth-millo, and they went and made Abimelech king, by the oak of the pillar at Shechem. 16 “Now therefore, if you acted in good faith and integrity when you made Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house and have done to him as his deeds deserved— (Jud 6:32; Jud 8:35; Pr 12:14; Isa 3:11)

17 for my father fought for you and risked his life and delivered you from the hand of Midian, 18 and you have risen up against my father’s house this day and have killed his sons, seventy men on one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his female servant, king over the leaders of Shechem, because he is your relative— (Jud 8:31; Jud 9:3; Jud 9:5) 19 if you then have acted in good faith and integrity with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you. The Downfall of Abimelech

22 Abimelech ruled over Israel three years. 23 And God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the leaders of Shechem, and the leaders of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech, (1Sa 16:14; 1Sa 18:10; 1Sa 19:9; Isa 33:1)

24 that the violence done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid on Abimelech their brother, who killed them, and on the men of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to kill his brothers. (Jud 9:56; 1Ki 2:32; Es 9:25; Ps 7:16; Mt 23:35)

25 And the leaders of Shechem put men in ambush against him on the mountaintops, and they robbed all who passed by them along that way. And it was told to Abimelech. 26 And Gaal the son of Ebed moved into Shechem with his relatives, and the leaders of Shechem put confidence in him. 27 And they went out into the field and gathered the grapes from their vineyards and trod them and held a festival; and they went into the house of their god and ate and drank and reviled Abimelech. (Jud 9:4; Jud 9:46) 28 And Gaal the son of Ebed said, “Who is Abimelech, and who are we of Shechem, that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerubbaal, and is not Zebul his officer? Serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem; but why should we serve him? (Ge 34:2; Ge 34:6; 1Sa 25:10) 29 Would that this people were under my hand! Then I would remove Abimelech. I would say^[1] to Abimelech, ‘Increase your army, and come out.’” 30 When Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was kindled. 31 And he sent messengers to Abimelech secretly,^[2] saying, “Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his relatives have come to Shechem, and they are stirring up^[3] the city against you. 32 Now therefore, go by night, you and the people who are with you, and set an ambush in the field. 33 Then in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, rise early and rush upon the city. And when he and the people who are with him come out against you, you may do to them as your hand finds to do.” (Ec 9:10) 34 So Abimelech and all the men who were with him rose up by night and set an ambush against Shechem in four companies. 35 And Gaal the son of Ebed went out and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city, and Abimelech and the people who were with him rose from the ambush. 36 And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, “Look, people are coming down from the mountaintops!” And Zebul said to him, “You mistake^[4] the shadow of the mountains for men.” (Jud 9:7; Jud 9:25) 37 Gaal spoke again and said, “Look, people are coming down from the center of the land, and one company is coming from the direction of the Diviners’ Oak.” 38 Then Zebul said to him, “Where is your mouth now, you who said, ‘Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him?’ Are not these the people whom you despised? Go out now and fight with them.” (Jud 9:28) 39 And Gaal went out at the head of the leaders of Shechem and fought with Abimelech. 40 And Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him. And many fell wounded, up to the entrance of the gate. 41 And Abimelech lived at Arumah, and Zebul drove out Gaal and his relatives, so that they could not dwell at Shechem. 42 On the following day, the people went out into the field, and Abimelech was told. 43 He took his people and divided them into three companies and set an ambush in the fields. And he looked and saw the people coming out of the city. So he rose against them and killed them. 44 Abimelech and the company that was with him rushed forward and stood at the entrance of the gate of the city, while the two companies rushed upon all who were in the field and killed them. (Jud 20:37) 45 And Abimelech fought against the city all that day. He captured the city and killed the people who were in it, and he razed the city and sowed it with salt. (De 29:23; 2Ki 3:25) 46 When all the leaders of the Tower of Shechem heard of it, they entered the stronghold of the house of El-berith. (Jud 8:33; Jud 9:4; Jud 9:49) 47 Abimelech was told that all the leaders of the Tower of Shechem were gathered together. 48 And Abimelech went up to Mount Zalmon, he and all the people who were with him. And Abimelech took an axe in his hand and cut down a bundle of brushwood and took it up and laid it on his shoulder. And he said to the men who were with him, “What you have seen me do, hurry and do as I have done.” (Ps 68:14) 49 So every one of the people cut down his bundle and following Abimelech put it against the stronghold, and they set the stronghold on fire over them, so that all the people of the Tower of Shechem also died, about 1,000 men and women. (Jud 9:46) 50 Then Abimelech went to Thebez and encamped against Thebez and captured it. 51 But there was a strong tower within the city, and all the men and women and all the leaders of the city fled to it and shut themselves in, and they went up to the roof of the tower. 52 And Abimelech came to the tower and fought against it and drew near to the door of the tower to burn it with fire. 53 And a certain woman threw an upper millstone on Abimelech’s head and crushed his skull. (2Sa 11:21) 54 Then he called quickly to the young man his armor-bearer and said to him, “Draw your sword and kill me, lest they say of me, ‘A woman killed him.’” And his young man thrust him through, and he died. (1Sa 31:4) 55 And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, everyone departed to his home. 56 Thus God returned the evil of Abimelech, which he committed against his father in killing his seventy brothers. Abimelec

1 Pues Abimelec ben Jerobaal había ido a Siquem, a los parientes de su madre, y había hablado con ellos y con toda la familia de la casa del padre de su madre, diciendo: 2 Os ruego que digáis a oídos de todos los señores de Siquem: ¿Es mejor para vosotros que os gobiernen setenta hombres, todos los hijos de Jerobaal, o que os gobierne un solo varón? Recordad también que yo soy vuestro hueso y vuestra carne. 3 Refirieron pues los hermanos de su madre todas estas palabras acerca de él en oídos de todos los hombres de Siquem, y el corazón de ellos se inclinó tras Abimelec, pues decían: Es nuestro hermano. 4 Y del templo de Baal-berit le dieron setenta siclos de plata, con los cuales Abimelec contrató hombres ociosos y vagabundos, que lo siguieron. 5 Luego fue a casa de su padre, en Ofra, y sobre una misma piedra mató a sus hermanos, los hijos de Jerobaal, que eran setenta varones, salvo Jotam, el hijo menor de Jerobaal, porque se escondió. 6 Entonces todos los vecinos de Siquem y todos los de Bet-milo, se reunieron y fueron e hicieron que Abimelec gobernara como rey, junto a la encina del pilar erigido en Siquem. 7 Cuando se lo declararon a Jotam, fue y se puso en la cumbre del monte Gerizim, y alzando su voz, clamó y les dijo: Escuchadme, señores de Siquem, Para que escuche ’Elohim: 8 Fueron una vez los árboles a ungir sobre ellos rey, Y dijeron al olivo: Reina sobre nosotros. 9 Pero les dijo el olivo: ¿Dejaré mi aceite, con el cual ’Elohim y los hombres son honrados, Para mecerme por encima de los árboles? 10 Entonces los árboles dijeron a la higuera: ¡Ven tú, reina sobre nosotros! 11 Pero la higuera les dijo: ¿Dejaré mi dulzura y mi buen fruto, Para mecerme por encima de los árboles? 12 Dijeron luego los árboles a la vid: ¡Ven tú, reina sobre nosotros! 13 Y la vid les respondió: ¿Dejaré mi mosto, Que alegra a ’Elohim y a los hombres, Para mecerme por encima de los árboles? 14 Entonces todos los árboles dijeron a la zarza: ¡Ven tú, reina sobre nosotros! 15 Y la zarza dijo a los árboles: ¡Si en verdad queréis ungirme por rey sobre vosotros, venid a refugiaros bajo mi sombra! De lo contrario, saldrá fuego de la zarza y devorará los cedros del Líbano. 16 Ahora pues, si con verdad y rectitud habéis hecho que Abimelec gobernara como rey , y si habéis obrado bien con Jerobaal y con su casa, y si lo habéis tratado conforme al mérito de sus manos, 17 pues mi padre combatió por vosotros, y exponiendo su vida os libró de mano de Madián, 18 pero hoy vosotros os habéis levantado contra la casa de mi padre y habéis matado a sus hijos, a setenta varones sobre una misma piedra, y habéis puesto por rey sobre los señores de Siquem a Abimelec, hijo de su esclava, por cuanto es vuestro hermano, 19 si con verdad y rectitud, pues, habéis procedido en este día con Jerobaal y con su casa, entonces regocijaos en Abimelec y regocíjese él también en vosotros. 20 Pero si no, entonces que de Abimelec salga fuego y consuma a los señores de Siquem y a Bet-milo, y que de los señores de Siquem y de Bet-milo salga fuego que consuma a Abimelec. 21 Luego Jotam huyó y se puso a salvo marchando a Beer, donde permaneció por temor a su hermano Abimelec. 22 Y Abimelec imperó sobre Israel tres años. 23 Luego ’Elohim suscitó un espíritu maligno entre Abimelec y los señores de Siquem, de modo que los señores de Siquem traicionaron a Abimelec, 24 devolviendo así la violencia hecha a los setenta hijos de Jerobaal, y haciendo recaer su sangre sobre Abimelec su hermano, que los había asesinado, y sobre los señores de Siquem, quienes habían fortalecido las manos de aquél para que asesinara a sus hermanos. 25 Para esto los vecinos de Siquem colocaron en las cumbres de los montes gente emboscada, que saqueaba a cuantos pasaban junto a ellos por el camino, de lo cual se dio aviso a Abimelec. 26 Llegó entonces Gaal ben Ebed, con sus hermanos y pasaron a Siquem, y los vecinos de Siquem pusieron su confianza en él. 27 Luego salieron al campo y vendimiaron sus viñas, pisaron la uva e hicieron fiestas, y entrando en el templo de sus dioses, comieron y bebieron, y maldijeron a Abimelec. 28 Entonces Gaal ben Ebed dijo: ¿Quién es Abimelec y quiénes los siquemitas para que le sirvamos? ¿No es el hijo de Jerobaal y Zebul su lugarteniente? ¡Servid a los descendientes de Hamor, padre de Siquem! ¿Por qué le hemos de servir nosotros? 29 ¡Ojalá este pueblo estuviera en mi mano para derrocar a Abimelec! Diría a Abimelec: ¡Refuerza tu ejército y sal! 30 Y al oír Zebul, gobernador de la ciudad, las palabras de Gaal ben Ebed, se encendió su ira, 31 y envió secretamente emisarios a Abimelec, diciendo: He aquí Gaal ben Ebed y sus hermanos han venido a Siquem, y están sublevando la ciudad contra ti. 32 Ahora pues, ven de noche con la gente que está contigo, y tiende una emboscada en el campo. 33 Por la mañana, al salir el sol, levántate pronto e irrumpe contra la ciudad; cuando él y el pueblo que lo acompaña salgan hacia ti, haz con él según te venga a mano. 34 Abimelec entonces, con toda la gente que estaba con él, se levantó de noche y tendió una emboscada contra Siquem, en cuatro escuadrones. 35 Entonces salió Gaal ben Ebed y se paró a la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad, en tanto que Abimelec y toda la gente que estaba con él, salían de la emboscada. 36 Y viendo Gaal al pueblo, dijo a Zebul: ¡Mira la gente que baja de las cumbres de los montes! Zebul le respondió: ¡La sombra de los montes te parecen hombres! 37 Pero Gaal volvió a insistir diciendo: ¡Ve allí gente que baja del Ombligo de la Tierra, y un escuadrón que viene por el camino de Elón-Meonenim. 38 Y Zebul le respondió: ¿Dónde está esa boca que decía: ¿Quién es Abimelec para que le sirvamos? ¿No es este el pueblo que despreciaste? ¡Sal pues ahora, y pelea con él! 39 Entonces Gaal salió al frente de los siquemitas, y entabló batalla con Abimelec. 40 Pero Abimelec lo persiguió, y muchos cayeron muertos cuando huían hacia las puertas de la ciudad. 41 Luego Abimelec se volvió a Aruma, mientras que Zebul expulsó a Gaal y a sus parientes, impidiéndoles permanecer en Siquem. 42 Y aconteció que al día siguiente el pueblo salió al campo y se lo comunicaron a Abimelec, 43 quien tomó a su gente y la repartió en tres escuadrones, y tendió una emboscada en el campo. Cuando vio que el pueblo salía de la ciudad, surgió contra ellos para atacarlos. 44 Abimelec y el escuadrón que iba con él se desplegaron y se pararon a la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad, mientras los otros dos escuadrones se lanzaron contra todos los que estaban en el campo, y los derrotaron. 45 Abimelec combatió contra la ciudad todo aquel día, y la conquistó, y mató a la gente que había en ella, arrasó la ciudad y la sembró de sal. 46 Al oírlo, todos los habitantes de la torre de Siquem se replegaron a la cripta del templo de ’El-Berit. 47 Cuando se dio aviso a Abimelec de que todos los moradores de la torre de Siquem estaban reunidos, 48 Abimelec subió al monte Salmón con toda la gente que lo acompañaba. Luego tomó Abimelec el hacha de doble filo en su mano, cortó una rama del árbol, la cual alzó sobre su hombro, y dijo al pueblo que estaba con él: Lo que me habéis visto hacer, apresuraos a hacerlo como yo. 49 Y todo el pueblo cortó también su rama, y cada uno siguió a Abimelec, y colocándolas contra la fortaleza, prendieron fuego con ellas a la fortaleza, de modo que todos los habitantes de la torre de Siquem murieron, unos mil entre hombres y mujeres. 50 Después Abimelec marchó a Tebes, puso sitio a Tebes, y la capturó. 51 Pero en medio de la ciudad había una torre fuerte, donde estaban refugiados todos los hombres y mujeres, los habitantes todos de la ciudad, los cuales, encerrándose dentro, habían subido a la azotea de la torre. 52 Llegando Abimelec a la torre, la embistió y se acercó hasta su puerta para prenderle fuego. 53 Entonces, cierta mujer arrojó una piedra encimera de molino sobre la cabeza de Abimelec y le partió el cráneo. 54 Él llamó apresuradamente a su joven escudero, y le dijo: Desenvaina tu espada y mátame, para que no se diga de mí: ¡Una mujer lo mató! Y el muchacho lo traspasó y murió. 55 En cuanto los hombres de Israel vieron que Abimelec había muerto, marcharon cada cual a su lugar. 56 Así retribuyó ’Elohim a Abimelec el mal que había hecho contra su padre, al asesinar a sus setenta hermanos. 57 También toda la maldad de los hombres de Siquem la hizo volver ’Elohim sobre sus propias cabezas, de manera que vino sobre ellos la maldición de Jotam ben Jerobaal.
