1Then Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) and all the people who were with him rose early and encamped beside the spring of Harod. And the camp of Midian was north of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley. (Ge 12:6; De 11:30; Jud 6:32; 1Sa 29:1)2The Lord said to Gideon, “The people with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel boast over me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’ (De 8:17; Isa 10:13)3Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him return home and hurry away from Mount Gilead.’” Then 22,000 of the people returned, and 10,000 remained. (De 20:8)4And the Lord said to Gideon, “The people are still too many. Take them down to the water, and I will test them for you there, and anyone of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you,’ shall go with you, and anyone of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ shall not go.”5So he brought the people down to the water. And the Lord said to Gideon, “Every one who laps the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, you shall set by himself. Likewise, every one who kneels down to drink.”6And the number of those who lapped, putting their hands to their mouths, was 300 men, but all the rest of the people knelt down to drink water.7And the Lord said to Gideon, “With the 300 men who lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hand, and let all the others go every man to his home.” (1Sa 14:6; 2Ch 14:11)8So the people took provisions in their hands, and their trumpets. And he sent all the rest of Israel every man to his tent, but retained the 300 men. And the camp of Midian was below him in the valley. (Jud 7:1)9That same night the Lord said to him, “Arise, go down against the camp, for I have given it into your hand. (Ge 46:2; Jud 3:28; 1Ki 3:5)10But if you are afraid to go down, go down to the camp with Purah your servant.11And you shall hear what they say, and afterward your hands shall be strengthened to go down against the camp.” Then he went down with Purah his servant to the outposts of the armed men who were in the camp. (Jud 7:13; 1Sa 14:9)12And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the people of the East lay along the valley like locusts in abundance, and their camels were without number, as the sand that is on the seashore in abundance. (Jos 11:4; Jud 6:3)13When Gideon came, behold, a man was telling a dream to his comrade. And he said, “Behold, I dreamed a dream, and behold, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian and came to the tent and struck it so that it fell and turned it upside down, so that the tent lay flat.”14And his comrade answered, “This is no other than the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel; God has given into his hand Midian and all the camp.”15As soon as Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation, he worshiped. And he returned to the camp of Israel and said, “Arise, for the Lord has given the host of Midian into your hand.”16And he divided the 300 men into three companies and put trumpets into the hands of all of them and empty jars, with torches inside the jars. (Ge 15:17; Jud 15:4)17And he said to them, “Look at me, and do likewise. When I come to the outskirts of the camp, do as I do.18When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then blow the trumpets also on every side of all the camp and shout, ‘For the Lord and for Gideon.’” (Ex 14:13; 2Ch 20:17)
Gideon Defeats Midian
19So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outskirts of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, when they had just set the watch. And they blew the trumpets and smashed the jars that were in their hands.20Then the three companies blew the trumpets and broke the jars. They held in their left hands the torches, and in their right hands the trumpets to blow. And they cried out, “A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!” (Jud 7:18)21Every man stood in his place around the camp, and all the army ran. They cried out and fled. (2Ki 7:7)22When they blew the 300 trumpets, the Lord set every man’s sword against his comrade and against all the army. And the army fled as far as Beth-shittah toward Zererah,[1] as far as the border of Abel-meholah, by Tabbath. (Jos 6:4; Jos 6:16; Jos 6:20; 1Sa 14:20; 2Ch 20:23; Ps 83:9; Isa 9:4)23And the men of Israel were called out from Naphtali and from Asher and from all Manasseh, and they pursued after Midian.24Gideon sent messengers throughout all the hill country of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against the Midianites and capture the waters against them, as far as Beth-barah, and also the Jordan.” So all the men of Ephraim were called out, and they captured the waters as far as Beth-barah, and also the Jordan. (Jos 24:33; Jud 3:28; Jud 6:35)25And they captured the two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb. They killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb they killed at the winepress of Zeeb. Then they pursued Midian, and they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon across the Jordan. (Jud 8:3; Jud 8:4; Ps 83:11; Isa 10:26)

Y el campamento de Madián estaba al norte de ellos, en el valle cercano al collado de Moré.2Y dijo YHVH a Gedeón: El pueblo que tienes contigo es muy numeroso para que Yo entregue a Madián en su mano, no sea que Israel se enaltezca contra mí, y diga: Mi mano me ha salvado.3Pregona pues a oídos del pueblo, diciendo: ¡Quien tema y tiemble, vuélvase, y retírese del monte de Galaad! Y de los del pueblo se volvieron veintidós mil, y quedaron diez mil.4Entonces dijo YHVH a Gedeón: Aún el pueblo es mucho. Haz que bajen a las aguas, y te los probaré allí, y será que de quien Yo te diga: Vaya éste contigo, irá contigo; pero del que te diga: No vaya éste contigo, no irá.5Hizo pues que el pueblo bajara a las aguas, y dijo YHVH a Gedeón: Todo el que lama las aguas con su lengua, como lame el perro, lo pondrás aparte; asimismo a todo el que se arrodille para beber.6Y el número de los que bebieron a lametones fue de trescientos hombres, pero el resto del pueblo se arrodilló para beber el agua.7Y dijo YHVH a Gedeón: Con estos trescientos hombres que han lamido os salvaré y entregaré a Madián en tus manos. Que todo el pueblo se vaya, cada uno a su lugar.8Tomó aquella gente sus pertrechos en sus manos, así como sus shofar, y a todos los demás hombres de Israel los envió, cada cual a su tienda, pero retuvo a los trescientos hombres. Y el campamento de Madián estaba debajo de él, en el valle.9Y sucedió aquella noche que YHVH le dijo: Levántate, baja al campamento, porque lo he entregado en tu mano.10Y si temes descender, baja al campamento con tu criado Fura,11y escucha lo que hablan, pues así tus manos serán fortalecidas para bajar contra el campamento. Y él bajó con su criado Fura hasta un extremo de los quintados que había en el campamento.12Y Madián y Amalec, con todos los orientales, estaban esparcidos por el valle como multitud de langostas, y sus camellos eran incontables como la arena que está a la orilla del mar.13Y he aquí cuando llegó Gedeón, un hombre estaba relatando a su compañero un sueño, y decía: Mira, acabo de soñar un sueño: Veía un pan de cebada que rodaba hasta el campamento de Madián, y llegó hasta la tienda y la golpeó de tal manera que cayó. La trastornó de arriba abajo de tal modo que la tienda colapsó.14Y su compañero respondió, y dijo: Esto no es otra cosa sino la espada de Gedeón ben Joás, varón de Israel. Ha-’Elohim ha entregado en su mano a Madián y a todo el campamento.15Y sucedió que cuando Gedeón oyó el relato del sueño con su interpretación, se postró, y regresó al campamento de Israel, y dijo: Levantaos, porque YHVH ha entregado en vuestra mano el campamento de Madián.16Y repartió los trescientos hombres en tres escuadrones, y puso un shofar en mano de cada uno de ellos, y cántaros vacíos con antorchas dentro de los cántaros.17Luego les dijo: Miradme, y haced lo que hago yo. He aquí cuando llegue al extremo del campamento, lo que yo haga, así haréis vosotros.18Cuando yo, y todos los que están conmigo, hagamos resonar el shofar, entonces cada uno de vosotros también haréis resonar el shofar alrededor de todo el campamento, y gritaréis: ¡Por YHVH y por Gedeón!19Y Gedeón y los cien hombres que estaban con él llegaron a las afueras del campamento, al principio de la vigilia intermedia, cuando acababan de relevar a los centinelas. Y haciendo resonar el shofar, quebraron los cántaros que llevaban en sus manos.20Entonces, los tres escuadrones hicieron resonar los shofar, quebraron los cántaros, y tomando con su mano izquierda las antorchas y con su diestra el shofar para hacerlo resonar, clamaron: ¡Espada de YHVH y de Gedeón!21Y cada hombre se mantuvo firme en su lugar alrededor del campamento, y todo el campamento echó a correr gritando mientras huían.22Pues cuando hicieron resonar los trescientos shofares, YHVH hizo que la espada de cada uno se volviera contra su compañero en todo el campamento. Y el campamento huyó hasta Bet-sita, en dirección de Zerera, hasta el límite de Abel-mehola, cerca de Tabat.23Y fueron convocados los israelitas de Neftalí, de Aser y de todo Manasés, y persiguieron a Madián.24Luego Gedeón envió mensajeros por toda la serranía de Efraín, diciendo: ¡Bajad al encuentro de los madianitas y tomad antes que ellos las aguas hasta Bet-bara y el Jordán! Y todos los hombres de Efraín se reunieron y tomaron las aguas hasta Bet-bara y también el Jordán.25Y capturaron a los dos jefes de Madián: Oreb y Zeeb. Y a Oreb lo mataron en Tsur-oreb y a Zeeb lo mataron en Yequeb-zeeb. Y persiguieron a Madián, pero las cabezas de Oreb y de Zeeb las llevaron a Gedeón, al otro lado del Jordán.
