Midian Oppresses Israel

1 The people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord gave them into the hand of Midian seven years. (Ge 25:2; Nu 25:17; Jud 2:19; Hab 3:7)

2 And the hand of Midian overpowered Israel, and because of Midian the people of Israel made for themselves the dens that are in the mountains and the caves and the strongholds. (1Sa 13:6; Heb 11:38) 3 For whenever the Israelites planted crops, the Midianites and the Amalekites and the people of the East would come up against them. 4 They would encamp against them and devour the produce of the land, as far as Gaza, and leave no sustenance in Israel and no sheep or ox or donkey. (Le 26:16; De 28:30; De 28:51; Mic 6:15)

5 For they would come up with their livestock and their tents; they would come like locusts in number—both they and their camels could not be counted—so that they laid waste the land as they came in. (Jud 7:12) 6 And Israel was brought very low because of Midian. And the people of Israel cried out for help to the Lord. The Call of Gideon

11 Now the angel of the Lord came and sat under the terebinth at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, while his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress to hide it from the Midianites. (Jos 17:2; Jud 8:2; Heb 11:32) 12 And the angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to him, “The Lord is with you, O mighty man of valor.” (Jos 1:5; Jud 13:3; Lu 1:11; Ac 10:3)

13 And Gideon said to him, “Please, my lord, if the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all his wonderful deeds that our fathers recounted to us, saying, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt?’ But now the Lord has forsaken us and given us into the hand of Midian.” (Ps 44:1; Ps 89:49; Isa 63:15) 14 And the Lord^[1] turned to him and said, “Go in this might of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian; do not I send you?” (Jos 1:9; 1Sa 12:11) 15 And he said to him, “Please, Lord, how can I save Israel? 18 Please do not depart from here until I come to you and bring out my present and set it before you.” And he said, “I will stay till you return.” (Ge 18:3; Jud 13:15) 19 So Gideon went into his house and prepared a young goat and unleavened cakes from an ephah^[2] of flour. The meat he put in a basket, and the broth he put in a pot, and brought them to him under the terebinth and presented them. (Ge 18:6) 20 And the angel of God said to him, “Take the meat and the unleavened cakes, and put them on this rock, and pour the broth over them.” And he did so. (Jud 13:19; 1Ki 18:33) 21 Then the angel of the Lord reached out the tip of the staff that was in his hand and touched the meat and the unleavened cakes. And fire sprang up from the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened cakes. And the angel of the Lord vanished from his sight. (Le 9:24; 1Ki 18:38; 2Ch 7:1) 22 Then Gideon perceived that he was the angel of the Lord. And Gideon said, “Alas, O Lord God! For now I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face.” (Ge 32:30; Ex 33:20; De 5:26; Jud 13:21)

23 But the Lord said to him, “Peace be to you. Do not fear; you shall not die.” (Da 10:19) 24 Then Gideon built an altar there to the Lord and called it, The Lord Is Peace. To this day it still stands at Ophrah, which belongs to the Abiezrites. (Ge 22:14; Ex 17:15; Jud 6:11; Jud 8:27; Jud 8:32; Eze 48:35)

25 That night the Lord said to him, “Take your father’s bull, and the second bull seven years old, and pull down the altar of Baal that your father has, and cut down the Asherah that is beside it (Jud 3:7) 26 and build an altar to the Lord your God on the top of the stronghold here, with stones laid in due order. Then take the second bull and offer it as a burnt offering with the wood of the Asherah that you shall cut down.” (Da 11:7; Da 11:10; Da 11:31) 27 So Gideon took ten men of his servants and did as the Lord had told him. But because he was too afraid of his family and the men of the town to do it by day, he did it by night.

Gideon Destroys the Altar of Baal

28 When the men of the town rose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah beside it was cut down, and the second bull was offered on the altar that had been built. 29 And they said to one another, “Who has done this thing?” And after they had searched and inquired, they said, “Gideon the son of Joash has done this thing.” 30 Then the men of the town said to Joash, “Bring out your son, that he may die, for he has broken down the altar of Baal and cut down the Asherah beside it.” 31 But Joash said to all who stood against him, “Will you contend for Baal? Or will you save him? Whoever contends for him shall be put to death by morning. If he is a god, let him contend for himself, because his altar has been broken down.” 32 Therefore on that day Gideon^[3] was called Jerubbaal, that is to say, “Let Baal contend against him,” because he broke down his altar. (Jud 7:1; 1Sa 12:11; 2Sa 11:21) 33 Now all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the people of the East came together, and they crossed the Jordan and encamped in the Valley of Jezreel. (Jos 17:16; Jud 6:3) 34 But the Spirit of the Lord clothed Gideon, and he sounded the trumpet, and the Abiezrites were called out to follow him. (Jud 3:10; Jud 3:27) 35 And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh, and they too were called out to follow him. And he sent messengers to Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali, and they went up to meet them. (Jud 7:24)

The Sign of the Fleece

36 Then Gideon said to God, “If you will save Israel by my hand, as you have said, (Ex 4:1) 37 behold, I am laying a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew on the fleece alone, and it is dry on all the ground, then I shall know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you have said.” 38 And it was so. When he rose early next morning and squeezed the fleece, he wrung enough dew from the fleece to fill a bowl with water. 39 Then Gideon said to God, “Let not your anger burn against me; let me speak just once more. Please let me test just once more with the fleece. Please let it be dry on the fleece only, and on all the ground let there be dew.” (Ge 18:32) 40 And God did so that night; and it was dry on the fleece only, and on all the ground there was dew.

Gedeón

1 Pero los hijos de Israel volvieron a hacer lo malo ante los ojos de YHVH. Y YHVH los entregó en las manos de Madián por siete años. 2 Y la mano de Madián prevaleció contra Israel. Y por causa de Madián los hijos de Israel prepararon las guaridas y cuevas que están en los montes, y los lugares fortificados. 3 Porque sucedía que cuando los de Israel acababan de sembrar, los madianitas venían con los amalecitas y con los hijos del oriente y subían contra ellos, 4 y acampaban frente a ellos, y destruían el producto de la tierra hasta llegar a Gaza, y no dejaban sustento alguno en Israel, ni cordero, ni buey, ni asno. 5 Porque subían con sus ganados y sus tiendas, entrando como langostas en multitud, pues tanto ellos como sus camellos eran innumerables, y entraban en la tierra para devastarla. 6 Así Israel empobrecía en gran manera a causa de Madián. Entonces los hijos de Israel clamaron a YHVH. 7 Y sucedió que cuando los hijos de Israel clamaron a YHVH a causa de Madián, 8 YHVH envió entonces a un varón profeta a los hijos de Israel, el cual les dijo: Así dice YHVH Dios de Israel: Yo os hice subir de Egipto, y os saqué de casa de esclavitud, 9 y os salvé de la mano de los egipcios, y de la mano de todos vuestros opresores, a los cuales eché de delante de vosotros, y os di su tierra, 10 y os dije: Yo soy YHVH vuestro Dios; no temáis a los dioses del amorreo en cuya tierra habitáis. Pero no obedecisteis a mi voz. 11 Entonces, el ángel de YHVH vino y se sentó bajo la encina que está en Ofra, que era de Joás abiezerita. Y su hijo Gedeón estaba desgranando espigas en el lagar para esconderlo de los madianitas. 12 Y se le apareció el ángel de YHVH y le dijo: ¡YHVH es contigo, varón fuerte y valiente! 13 Pero Gedeón contestó: ¡Ah, señor mío! si YHVH está con nosotros, ¿cómo es que nos ha sobrevenido todo esto? ¿Y en dónde están todas sus maravillas que nuestros padres nos relataron, diciendo: YHVH nos hizo subir de Egipto? Pero ahora YHVH nos ha desechado y nos ha entregado en mano de Madián. 14 Entonces YHVH se volvió hacia él, y le dijo: Ve con tu fuerza, y librarás a Israel de la palma de la mano de Madián. ¿Acaso no te envío Yo? 15 Y él le dijo: ¡Ah, señor mío! ¿Con qué libraré a Israel? He aquí mi clan es el más pobre de Manasés, y yo el menor en la casa de mi padre. 16 Pero YHVH le dijo: Porque Yo estaré contigo derrotarás a Madián como a un solo hombre. 17 Y él le respondió: Te ruego, si he hallado gracia ante tus ojos, dame señal de que eres Tú mismo quien hablas conmigo. 18 No te muevas de aquí, te ruego, hasta que vuelva a ti y saque mi ofrenda, y la ponga ante tu presencia. Y Él dijo: Yo me quedaré hasta que vuelvas. 19 Entonces Gedeón entró y preparó un cabrito y un efa de harina de panes sin levadura; luego puso la carne en una canasta y el caldo en una olla, y lo sacó y se lo ofreció bajo la encina. 20 Y el ángel de Dios le dijo: Toma la carne y el pan ázimo y ponlos sobre esta peña, y vierte el caldo sobre ellos. Y él lo hizo así. 21 Entonces el ángel de YHVH extendió el cayado que tenía en su mano, y la punta tocó la carne y el pan ázimo, y subió el fuego de la peña, que consumió la carne y el ázimo. Y el ángel de YHVH desapareció de su vista. 22 Viendo Gedeón que era el ángel de YHVH, dijo: ¡Ay de mí, Adonay YHVH, porque he visto al ángel de YHVH cara a cara! 23 Pero YHVH le dijo: ¡Paz sea contigo! No temas, no morirás. 24 Y Gedeón construyó allí un altar a YHVH, y lo llamó YHVH Shalom, el cual permanece hasta el día de hoy en Ofra de los abiezeritas. 25 Pues aconteció en aquella misma noche que YHVH le dijo: Toma el novillo que tiene tu padre, el novillo rojo, todo bermejo, y derriba con él el altar de Baal que tiene tu padre, y tala la Asera que está a su lado. 26 Y construye debidamente un altar a YHVH tu Dios en la parte más alta de esta peña. Luego toma el buey rojo, y ofrécelo en holocausto con la madera de la Asera que habrás cortado. 27 Tomó pues Gedeón diez hombres de sus siervos, e hizo como le había dicho YHVH. Pero, por temor a la casa de su padre y a los hombres de la ciudad, no hizo eso de día, sino que lo hizo de noche. 28 Cuando los hombres de la ciudad se levantaron por la mañana, he aquí el altar de Baal estaba demolido y la Asera que había junto a él estaba cortada, y el novillo rojo había sido ofrecido en holocausto sobre el altar construido. 29 Y se decían unos a otros: ¿Quién ha hecho esto? Y cuando indagaron y preguntaron, se les dijo: Gedeón ben Joás ha hecho esto. Por lo cual los hombres de la ciudad dijeron a Joás: 30 Saca a tu hijo, para que muera; porque ha demolido el altar de Baal y ha talado la Asera que había junto a él. 31 Pero Joás respondió a todos los que estaban ante él: ¿Pretendéis contender por Baal, o queréis ayudarle? Quien pretenda contender por él, será muerto antes de la mañana. Si es ’Elohim, que contienda por sí mismo con el que demolió su altar. 32 Por esto fue apellidado en aquel día Jerobaal, es decir: Contienda con él Baal, por cuanto derribó su altar. 33 Entre tanto, todos los madianitas, los amalecitas y los hijos del oriente se reunieron a una, y pasando adelante acamparon en el valle de Jezreel. 34 Entonces el Espíritu de YHVH revistió a Gedeón, el cual resonó el shofar, y se juntaron los abiezeritas en pos de él. 35 Igualmente envió mensajeros por todo Manasés, y ellos también se reunieron con él. Asimismo envió mensajeros por Aser, Zabulón y Neftalí, los cuales también subieron a su encuentro. 36 Dijo entonces Gedeón a Ha-’Elohim: Si has de librar por mi mano a Israel, conforme has dicho, 37 he aquí que voy a poner este vellón de lana en el granero. Si cae el rocío sobre el vellón mientras todo el suelo queda seco, entonces sabré que librarás por mi mano a Israel, conforme has dicho. 38 Y sucedió así, pues cuando se levantó de madrugada, exprimió el vellón y sacó de él rocío hasta llenar un tazón de agua. 39 Dijo entonces Gedeón a Ha-’Elohim: No se encienda tu ira contra mí, y hablaré sólo una vez más. ¡Ruégote me permitas probar sólo esta vez con el vellón! Te ruego que quede seco el vellón, en tanto que en todo el suelo haya rocío. 40 Y ’Elohim lo hizo así aquella noche, y la sequedad estuvo solamente en el vellón, mientras que hubo rocío en toda la tierra.
