Hezekiah Seeks Isaiah’s Help

1 As soon as King Hezekiah heard it, he tore his clothes and covered himself with sackcloth and went into the house of the Lord. 2 And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the secretary, and the senior priests, covered with sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz. (Isa 1:1) 3 They said to him, “Thus says Hezekiah, ‘This day is a day of distress, of rebuke, and of disgrace; children have come to the point of birth, and there is no strength to bring them forth. (Isa 13:8; Isa 22:5; Ho 13:13) 4 It may be that the Lord your God will hear the words of the Rabshakeh, whom his master the king of Assyria has sent to mock the living God, and will rebuke the words that the Lord your God has heard; therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.’” (Isa 1:9; Isa 37:28) 5 When the servants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah, 6 Isaiah said to them, “Say to your master, ‘Thus says the Lord: Do not be afraid because of the words that you have heard, with which the young men of the king of Assyria have reviled me. 7 Behold, I will put a spirit in him, so that he shall hear a rumor and return to his own land, and I will make him fall by the sword in his own land.’” (Isa 19:14; Isa 37:9; Isa 37:38) 8 The Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria fighting against Libnah, for he had heard that the king had left Lachish. (Jos 10:31) 9 Now the king heard concerning Tirhakah king of Cush,^[1] “He has set out to fight against you.” And when he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying, (Isa 18:1; Isa 20:5) 10 “Thus shall you speak to Hezekiah king of Judah: ‘Do not let your God in whom you trust deceive you by promising that Jerusalem will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria. (Isa 36:14) 11 Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, devoting them to destruction. And shall you be delivered? 12 Have the gods of the nations delivered them, the nations that my fathers destroyed, Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the people of Eden who were in Telassar? (Ge 11:31; 2Ki 17:6; Isa 36:18) 13 Where is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, the king of the city of Sepharvaim, the king of Hena, or the king of Ivvah?’” (Isa 37:12)

Hezekiah’s Prayer for Deliverance

14 Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it; and Hezekiah went up to the house of the Lord, and spread it before the Lord. 15 And Hezekiah prayed to the Lord: 16 “O Lord of hosts, God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, you are the God, you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; you have made heaven and earth. 17 Incline your ear, O Lord, and hear; open your eyes, O Lord, and see; and hear all the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to mock the living God. (2Ch 6:40; 2Ch 32:19) 18 Truly, O Lord, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations and their lands, (Isa 10:13) 19 and have cast their gods into the fire. For they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone. Therefore they were destroyed. 20 So now, O Lord our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you alone are the Lord.”

Sennacherib’s Fall

21 Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Because you have prayed to me concerning Sennacherib king of Assyria, 22 this is the word that the Lord has spoken concerning him: “‘She despises you, she scorns you— the virgin daughter of Zion; she wags her head behind you— the daughter of Jerusalem. (Isa 1:8; Mic 4:13) 23 “Whom have you mocked and reviled? Against whom have you raised your voice and lifted your eyes to the heights? Against the Holy One of Israel! (Isa 10:17) 24 By your servants you have mocked the Lord, and you have said, With my many chariots I have gone up the heights of the mountains, to the far recesses of Lebanon, to cut down its tallest cedars, its choicest cypresses, to come to its remotest height, its most fruitful forest. (Isa 8:7; Isa 14:8) 25 I dug wells and drank waters, to dry up with the sole of my foot all the streams of Egypt. (Isa 19:6; Isa 20:4) 26 “Have you not heard that I determined it long ago? I planned from days of old what now I bring to pass, that you should make fortified cities crash into heaps of ruins, (Isa 10:5; Isa 10:15; Isa 25:1) 27 while their inhabitants, shorn of strength, are dismayed and confounded, and have become like plants of the field and like tender grass, like grass on the housetops, blighted^[2] before it is grown. 28 “I know your sitting down and your going out and coming in, and your raging against me. 29 Because you have raged against me and your complacency has come to my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth, and I will turn you back on the way by which you came.’ (Isa 10:12; Isa 37:34) 30 “And this shall be the sign for you: this year you shall eat what grows of itself, and in the second year what springs from that. Then in the third year sow and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat their fruit. 31 And the surviving remnant of the house of Judah shall again take root downward and bear fruit upward. (Isa 27:6) 32 For out of Jerusalem shall go a remnant, and out of Mount Zion a band of survivors. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this. (Isa 9:7; Isa 14:32) 33 “Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the king of Assyria: He shall not come into this city or shoot an arrow there or come before it with a shield or cast up a siege mound against it. (Hab 1:10; Lu 19:43) 34 By the way that he came, by the same he shall return, and he shall not come into this city, declares the Lord. 35 For I will defend this city to save it, for my own sake and for the sake of my servant David.” (Isa 29:1; Isa 31:5; Isa 38:6) 36 And the angel of the Lord went out and struck down 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians. And when people arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies. (Isa 10:33; Isa 14:25; Isa 17:14; Isa 29:5; Isa 30:31; Isa 31:8)

37 Then Sennacherib king of Assyria departed and returned home and lived at Nineveh. (Ge 10:11; Jon 1:2; Jon 3:3; Jon 4:11)

38 And as he was worshiping in the house of Nisroch his god, Adrammelech and Sharezer, his sons, struck him down with the sword. And after they escaped into the land of Ararat, Esarhaddon his son reigned in his place. (Ge 8:4; Ezr 4:2)

Judá es librado del rey de Asiria

1 Y sucedió que cuando el rey Ezequías lo oyó, también rasgó sus vestidos, y se cubrió de saco, y fue a la Casa de YHVH. 2 Y envió a Eliaquim, mayordomo de palacio, y a Sebna, el escriba, y a los más ancianos de los sacerdotes, cubiertos de saco, al profeta Isaías ben Amoz, 3 y le dijeron: Así ha dicho Ezequías: ¡Hoy es un día de angustia, de castigo y de vergüenza; los hijos han llegado hasta el cuello del útero, pero no hay fuerza para parir! 4 Quizá YHVH tu Dios haya escuchado las palabras del Rabsaces, a quien su amo, el rey de Asiria, mandó para provocar al Dios viviente, y castigue las palabras que YHVH tu Dios ha oído. ¡Eleva pues oración por el remanente que aún subsiste! 5 Así fueron los siervos del rey Ezequías a Isaías, 6 el cual les respondió: Decid a vuestro señor: Así dice YHVH: No temas las palabras que has oído, con las cuales los servidores del rey de Asiria me han vituperado. 7 He aquí pondré cierto espíritu en él, y oirá un rumor, y regresará a su tierra, y en su tierra lo haré caer a espada. 8 Volvió pues Rabsaces, y halló al rey de Asiria peleando contra Libna, porque supo que se había retirado de Laquis, 9 al oír que Tirhaca rey de Etiopía había salido a luchar contra él. Entonces envió mensajeros a Ezequías, diciendo: 10 Así hablaréis a Ezequías rey de Judá, diciendo: No te engañe tu Dios en quien confías, pensando que Jerusalem no será entregada en mano del rey de Asiria. 11 He aquí, tú mismo has oído lo que los reyes de Asiria han hecho a todos los países, exterminándolos, ¿y tú te vas a librar? 12 ¿Por ventura han podido librar los dioses a sus naciones que mis antepasados destruyeron: Gozán, Harán, y Resef, y los hijos de Edén que estaban en Telasar? 13 ¿Dónde están el rey de Hamat, el rey de Arpad, el rey de la ciudad de Sefarvaim, de Hena y de Iva? 14 Recibió, pues, Ezequías la carta de mano de los mensajeros y la leyó. Después subió Ezequías a la Casa de YHVH, y la extendió ante YHVH. 15 Y oró Ezequías a YHVH, y dijo: 16 ¡Oh YHVH Sebaot, Dios de Israel, que te sientas sobre los querubines! Sólo Tú eres Dios sobre todos los reinos de la tierra. Tú hiciste los cielos y la tierra. 17 Inclina tu oído ¡oh YHVH!, y escucha. Abre tus ojos ¡oh YHVH!, y mira. Escucha todas las palabras con que Senaquerib ha mandado para provocar al Dios viviente. 18 Oh YHVH, ciertamente los reyes de Asiria han asolado todas las naciones y sus comarcas, 19 y han arrojado sus dioses al fuego, porque no son dioses, sino obra de manos de hombre, de madera y de piedra, y por eso han sido aniquilados. 20 Ahora pues, YHVH Dios nuestro, sálvanos de su mano, y sepan todos los reinos de la tierra que Tú, sólo Tú, eres YHVH. 21 Entonces Isaías ben Amoz envió a decir a Ezequías: Así dice YHVH Dios de Israel: En cuanto a lo que pediste en oración acerca de Senaquerib rey de Asiria, 22 éste es el oráculo que YHVH ha pronunciado acerca de él: La virgen hija de Sión te desprecia y se burla de ti. La hija de Jerusalem menea despectivamente la cabeza a tu espalda. 23 ¿A quién has provocado y vituperado? ¿Contra quién has alzado la voz y levantado tus ojos con altivez? ¡Contra el Santo de Israel! 24 Por medio de tus siervos has provocado a Adonay, pues dijiste: Con la multitud de mis carros he subido a las alturas de las montañas, a lo más inaccesible del Líbano. He talado sus más altos cedros y sus mejores cipreses; he llegado hasta el último de sus refugios, hasta lo más denso de su bosque; 25 he cavado y he bebido aguas, y con la planta de mis pies he secado todos los ríos de Egipto. 26 ¿No lo has oído? Desde antiguo lo decidí; en tiempos remotos lo preparé, y ahora hago que suceda. Tú estás puesto para reducir las ciudades fortificadas a montones de ruinas, 27 y que sus habitantes, impotentes, abatidos y confusos, sean como pasto del campo, como hierba verde, como herbaje de tejado agostada antes de crecer. 28 Yo conozco tu sentarte, tu salir y tu entrar, y tu airarte contra mí. 29 Por cuanto tu enfurecimiento contra mí y tu soberbia han llegado a mis oídos, pondré mi garfio en tu nariz y mi brida en tu boca, y te haré volver por el camino en que viniste. 30 Esto te servirá de señal: Este año comeréis lo que brota de por sí, y el segundo año de lo que brote sin sembrar, y al tercer año sembrad y segad, plantad viñas y comed de su fruto. 31 Y el remanente de la casa de Judá que quede a salvo, de nuevo echará raíces por abajo y dará frutos por arriba. 32 Porque de Jerusalem saldrá un remanente, los sobrevivientes del Monte Sión. ¡El celo de YHVH Sebaot hará esto! 33 Por tanto, así dice YHVH acerca del rey de Asiria: No entrará a esta ciudad, ni disparará allí flecha, ni le opondrá escudo, ni levantará contra ella baluartes. 34 Por el camino que vino volverá, y no entrará en esta ciudad, dice YHVH. 35 Yo ampararé a esta ciudad para salvarla, por amor a mí mismo, y por amor a David mi siervo. 36 Y salió el ángel de YHVH y mató a ciento ochenta y cinco mil hombres en el campamento de los asirios, y a la hora de levantarse por la mañana, he aquí todos eran cadáveres. 37 Entonces Senaquerib, rey de Asiria, levantó el campamento, se volvió a Nínive y se quedó allí. 38 Y sucedió que mientras estaba postrado en el templo de su dios Nisroc, sus hijos Adremelec y Sarezer lo asesinaron a espada, y huyeron a la tierra de Ararat, y en lugar suyo reinó su hijo Esar-hadón.
