1 Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things that have been accomplished among us, (Ac 3:18; 2Ti 4:5; 2Ti 4:17) 2 just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word have delivered them to us, (Mr 1:1; Mr 4:14; Joh 15:27; Joh 16:4; Ac 4:20; Ac 11:15; Ac 26:16; 1Co 4:1; 1Co 11:2; 1Co 11:23; Heb 2:3; 1Pe 5:1; 2Pe 1:16; 1Jo 1:1; 1Jo 1:3) 3 it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, (Ac 1:1; Ac 11:4; Ac 23:26; Ac 24:3; Ac 26:25) 4 that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught. (Ac 2:36; Ac 18:25; Ro 2:18; 1Co 14:19; Ga 6:6; 2Pe 1:16; 2Pe 1:19) 5 In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah,[1] of the division of Abijah. And he had a wife from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. (1Ch 24:10; Mt 2:1; Lu 1:8) 6 And they were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and statutes of the Lord. (Lu 2:25; Ac 23:1; Ac 24:16; Php 2:15; Php 3:6; 1Th 2:10; 1Th 3:13; 1Th 5:23) 7 But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were advanced in years. (Ge 18:11; Jud 13:2; 1Sa 1:2; Lu 1:36; Heb 11:11) 8 Now while he was serving as priest before God when his division was on duty, (1Ch 24:19; 2Ch 8:14; 2Ch 31:2; Lu 1:5; Lu 1:23) 9 according to the custom of the priesthood, he was chosen by lot to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense. (Ex 30:7; 1Sa 2:28; 1Ch 23:13; 2Ch 29:11; Lu 1:21; Heb 9:2; Re 11:2; Re 11:19) 10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense. (Le 16:17; Ps 141:2; Re 5:8; Re 8:3) 11 And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. (Ex 30:1; Ex 40:26) 12 And Zechariah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him. (Ac 19:17) 13 But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. (Lu 1:60; Lu 1:63; Ac 10:4; Ac 10:31) 14 And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, (Lu 1:58) 15 for he will be great before the Lord. And he must not drink wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. (Nu 6:3; Jud 13:4; Jud 13:7; Jud 13:14; Isa 49:1; Isa 49:5; Jer 1:5; Mt 11:11; Mt 11:18; Lu 1:41; Lu 1:67; Lu 7:28; Lu 7:33; Ac 2:4; Ac 2:15; Ac 2:17; Ga 1:15; Eph 5:18) 16 And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God, 17 and he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared.” (Mal 3:1; Mal 4:6; Mt 11:10; Mt 11:14; Mr 1:2; Lu 1:76; Lu 7:27; Joh 3:28; Ro 10:21) 18 And Zechariah said to the angel, “How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.” (Ge 15:8; Ge 17:17) 19 And the angel answered him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. (1Ki 17:1; Job 1:6; Isa 63:9; Da 8:16; Da 9:21; Mt 18:10; Lu 1:26; Re 8:2) 20 And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time.” (Eze 3:26; Eze 24:27) 21 And the people were waiting for Zechariah, and they were wondering at his delay in the temple. (Lu 1:9) 22 And when he came out, he was unable to speak to them, and they realized that he had seen a vision in the temple. And he kept making signs to them and remained mute. (Lu 1:21; Lu 1:62) 23 And when his time of service was ended, he went to his home. (2Ki 11:5; 1Ch 9:25; 2Ch 23:8; Lu 1:8; Heb 10:11) 24 After these days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and for five months she kept herself hidden, saying, 25 “Thus the Lord has done for me in the days when he looked on me, to take away my reproach among people.” (Ge 30:23; 1Sa 1:6; Ps 113:9; Isa 4:1) 26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, (Mt 2:23; Lu 1:19) 27 to a virgin betrothed[2] to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. (Mt 1:16; Mt 1:18; Mt 1:20; Lu 2:4) 28 And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!”[3] (Jud 6:12; Ps 45:2; Da 9:23) 29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. (Lu 1:12) 30 And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. (Ac 7:46) 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. (Isa 7:14; Mt 1:21; Mt 1:25; Lu 2:21) 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, (2Sa 7:11; 2Sa 7:16; Ps 89:4; Ps 132:11; Isa 9:6; Isa 16:5; Mt 1:1; Mr 5:7; Lu 1:69; Lu 1:76; Lu 6:35; Ac 2:30; Ac 7:48; Re 3:7) 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” (Da 2:44; Da 7:14; Da 7:18; Da 7:27; Joh 12:34; Heb 1:8; Re 11:15) 34 And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”[4] 35 And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born[5] will be called holy—the Son of God. (Mt 1:18; Mt 1:20; Mt 14:33; Lu 1:32; Joh 6:69) 36 And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. (Lu 1:7) 37 For nothing will be impossible with God.” (Ge 18:14; Mt 19:26) 38 And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant[6] of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her. (Jud 6:21; Ac 12:10) 39 In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, (Jos 20:7; Jos 21:11; Lu 1:65) 40 and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 41 And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, (Lu 1:15; Lu 1:67) 42 and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! (De 28:4; Jud 5:24; Ps 127:3) 43 And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? (Lu 2:11; Lu 20:42; Joh 20:28) 44 For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 And blessed is she who believed that there would be[7] a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.” (Lu 1:20; Joh 20:29) 46 And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, (1Sa 2:1; Ps 34:2; Ps 69:30; Ac 10:46; Ac 19:17; 1Th 5:23) 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, (Ps 35:9; Ps 106:21; Isa 61:10; Hab 3:18; Lu 1:46; Ac 16:34; 1Ti 1:1; 1Ti 2:3; 2Ti 1:9; Tit 1:3; Tit 2:10; Tit 3:4; Jud 1:25) 48 for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; (1Sa 1:11; Ps 72:17; Ps 138:6; Mal 3:12; Lu 9:38; Lu 11:27) 49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. (Ps 71:19; Ps 89:8; Ps 99:3; Ps 111:9; Ps 126:2; Isa 57:15; Zep 3:17) 50 And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. (De 5:10; De 7:9; Ps 89:1; Ps 103:17) 51 He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; (Ps 89:10; Ps 98:1; Ps 118:16; Isa 51:9; Da 4:37; Jas 4:6) 52 he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate; (Job 5:11; Ps 75:7; Ps 107:40; Ps 113:7; Ps 147:6; Eze 21:26; Lu 1:51; Jas 4:10) 53 he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. (Job 22:9; Ps 34:10; Ps 107:9; Lu 6:21; Lu 6:24) 54 He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, (Ps 98:3; Isa 41:8; Isa 44:21; Isa 49:3; Mic 7:20; Lu 1:72; Heb 2:16) 55 as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever.” (Ge 17:19; Ps 132:11; Lu 1:54; Ga 3:16) 56 And Mary remained with her about three months and returned to her home. 57 Now the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son. 58 And her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. (Ge 19:19) 59 And on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child. And they would have called him Zechariah after his father, (Ge 17:12; Le 12:3; Lu 2:21; Php 3:5) 60 but his mother answered, “No; he shall be called John.” (Lu 1:13) 61 And they said to her, “None of your relatives is called by this name.” 62 And they made signs to his father, inquiring what he wanted him to be called. (Lu 1:22) 63 And he asked for a writing tablet and wrote, “His name is John.” And they all wondered. (Isa 8:1; Isa 30:8; Lu 1:60) 64 And immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, blessing God. (Mr 7:35; Lu 1:20; Lu 2:28; Lu 24:53) 65 And fear came on all their neighbors. And all these things were talked about through all the hill country of Judea, (Lu 1:39; Lu 7:16) 66 and all who heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, “What then will this child be?” For the hand of the Lord was with him. (Lu 2:19; Lu 2:51; Ac 11:21; Ac 13:11) 67 And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying, (Joe 2:28; Lu 1:15; Lu 1:41) 68 “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people (Ex 4:31; 1Ki 1:48; 1Ch 29:10; Ezr 7:27; Ps 41:13; Ps 72:18; Ps 106:48; Ps 111:9; Ps 130:7; Isa 29:23; Isa 43:1; Isa 59:20; Mt 15:31; Lu 1:78; Lu 2:38; Lu 7:16; Lu 24:21; Ac 13:17; Ac 15:14; Heb 2:6) 69 and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David, (1Sa 2:1; 1Sa 2:10; 2Sa 22:3; Ps 18:2; Ps 132:17; Eze 29:21; Lu 1:32) 70 as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, (Jer 23:5; Ac 3:21; Ro 1:2) 71 that we should be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us; (Ps 106:10) 72 to show the mercy promised to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant, (Le 26:42; Ps 105:8; Mic 7:20; Lu 1:54; Ro 9:4) 73 the oath that he swore to our father Abraham, to grant us (Ge 22:16; Ge 26:3; Heb 6:13) 74 that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, (Zep 3:15) 75 in holiness and righteousness before him all our days. (Jer 32:39; Mt 28:20; Eph 4:24; 1Th 2:10; Tit 2:12) 76 And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, (Mal 3:1; Mt 3:3; Mt 11:9; Mt 14:5; Mr 1:2; Lu 1:17; Lu 1:32; Lu 3:4; Lu 7:26; Lu 7:27; Lu 20:6) 77 to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins, (Mt 26:28; Mr 1:4) 78 because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the sunrise shall visit us[8] from on high (Mal 4:2; Lu 1:68; Lu 24:49; Eph 5:14; Col 3:12; 2Pe 1:19) 79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.” (Ps 107:10; Isa 9:2; Isa 42:7; Mt 4:16; Lu 2:14; Joh 8:12; Ac 26:18; Ro 3:17) 80 And the child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness until the day of his public appearance to Israel. (Mt 3:1; Mt 11:7; Lu 2:40)

1 Poněvadž mnozí usilovali sepsati pořádně vypravování těch věcí, kteréž jsou u nás jisté, 2 Jakž jsou nám vydali ti, kteřížto od počátku sami viděli, a služebníci toho Slova byli, 3 Vidělo se i mně, kterýž jsem toho všeho pravé povědomosti došel, tobě z gruntu o tom pořádně vypsati, výborný Theofile, 4 Abys zvěděl jistotu těch věcí, jimž jsi vyučován. 5 Byl za dnů Herodesa krále Judského kněz nějaký, jménem Zachariáš, z třídy Abiášovy, a manželka jeho ze dcer Aronových, a jméno její Alžběta. 6 Byli pak oba spravedliví před obličejem Božím, chodíce ve všech přikázáních a spravedlnostech Páně bez úhony. 7 A neměli plodu, protože Alžběta byla neplodná, a oba se byli zstarali ve dnech svých. 8 I stalo se, když on úřad kněžský konal v pořádku třídy své před Bohem, 9 Že vedle obyčeje úřadu kněžského los naň přišel, aby položil zápal, vejda do chrámu Páně. 10 A všecko množství lidu bylo vně, modlíce se v hodinu zápalu. 11 Tedy ukázal se jemu anděl Páně, stoje na pravé straně oltáře zápalu. 12 A uzřev jej Zachariáš, zstrašil se, a bázeň připadla na něj. 13 I řekl jemu anděl: Neboj se, Zachariáši, neboť jest uslyšána modlitba tvá, a Alžběta manželka tvá porodí tobě syna, a nazůveš jméno jeho Jan. 14 Z čehož budeš míti radost a veselé, a mnozí z jeho narození budou se radovati. 15 Bude zajisté veliký před obličejem Páně, a vína i nápoje opojného nebudeť píti, a Duchem svatým bude naplněn hned od života matky své. 16 A mnohé z synů Izraelských obrátí ku Pánu Bohu jejich. 17 Neboť, on předejde před obličejem jeho v duchu a v moci Eliášově, aby obrátil srdce otců k synům, a nevěřící k opatrnosti spravedlivých, aby tak připravil Pánu lid hotový. 18 I řekl Zachariáš k andělu: Po čemž to poznám? Nebo já starý jsem, a manželka má zstarala se ve dnech svých. 19 Odpověděv anděl, řekl jemu: Jáť jsem Gabriel, kterýž stojím před obličejem Božím, a poslán jsem, abych mluvil s tebou, a tyto věci veselé tobě zvěstoval. 20 A aj, budeš němý, a nebudeš moci mluviti až do toho dne, v kterémž se tyto věci stanou, protože jsi neuvěřil řečem mým, kteréž se naplní časem svým. 21 Lid pak očekával Zachariáše, a divili se, že on tak prodléval v chrámě. 22 Vyšed pak, nemohl mluviti k nim. I srozuměli, že vidění viděl v chrámě. Nebo on návěští jim dával, a zůstal němý. 23 I stalo se, když se vyplnili dnové konání úřadu jeho, odšel do domu svého. 24 A po těch dnech počala Alžběta manželka jeho, a tajila se za pět měsíců, řkuci: 25 Že tak mi učinil Pán ve dnech, v nichžto vzezřel, aby odjal mé pohanění mezi lidmi. 26 V měsíci pak šestém poslán jest anděl Gabriel od Boha do města Galilejského, kterémuž jméno Nazarét, 27 Ku panně zasnoubené muži, kterémuž jméno bylo Jozef, z domu Davidova, a jméno panny Maria. 28 I všed k ní anděl, dí: Zdráva milosti došlá, Pán Bůh s tebou, požehnaná ty mezi ženami. 29 Ona pak uzřevši ho, zarmoutila se nad řečí jeho, a myslila, jaké by to bylo pozdravení. 30 I řekl jí anděl: Neboj se, Maria, nebo jsi nalezla milost u Boha. 31 A počneš v životě a porodíš syna, a nazůveš jméno jeho Ježíš. 32 Tenť bude veliký, a Syn Nejvyššího slouti bude, a dáť jemu Pán Bůh stolici Davida otce jeho. 33 A kralovati bude v domě Jákobově na věky, a království jeho nebude konce. 34 I řekla Maria k andělu: Kterak se to stane, poněvadž já muže nepoznávám? 35 A odpověděv anděl, řekl jí: Duch svatý sstoupí v tě, a moc Nejvyššího zastíní tobě; a protož, což se z tebe svatého narodí, slouti bude Syn Boží. 36 A aj, Alžběta, příbuzná tvá, i ona počala syna v starosti své, a tento jest jí šestý měsíc, kteráž sloula neplodná. 37 Neboť nebude nemožné u Boha všeliké slovo. 38 I řekla Maria: Aj, služebnice Páně, staniž mi se podle slova tvého. I odšel od ní anděl. 39 Tedy povstavši Maria v těch dnech, odešla na hory s chvátáním do města Judova. 40 I vešla do domu Zachariášova, a pozdravila Alžběty. 41 I stalo se, jakž uslyšela pozdravení Marie Alžběta, zplésalo nemluvňátko v životě jejím, a naplněna jest Duchem svatým Alžběta. 42 I zvolala hlasem velikým a řekla: Požehnaná ty mezi ženami, a požehnaný plod života tvého. 43 A odkud mi to, aby přišla matka Pána mého ke mně? 44 Nebo aj, jakž se stal hlas pozdravení tvého v uších mých, zplésalo radostně nemluvňátko v životě mém. 45 A blahoslavená, kteráž uvěřila, neboť dokonány budou ty věci, kteréž jsou povědíny jí ode Pána. 46 Tedy řekla Maria: Velebí duše má Hospodina, 47 A veselí se duch můj v Bohu, Spasiteli mém, 48 Že jest vzezřel na ponížení služebnice své; neb aj, od této chvíle blahoslaviti mne budou všickni národové. 49 Neboť mi učinil veliké věci ten, jenž mocný jest, a svaté jméno jeho, 50 A jehož milosrdenství od pokolení až do pokolení bojícím se jeho. 51 Dokázal moci ramenem svým, rozptýlil pyšné myšlením srdce jejich. 52 Sházel mocné s stolic, a povýšil ponížených. 53 Lačné nakrmil dobrými věcmi, a bohaté pustil prázdné. 54 Přijal Izraele, služebníka svého, pamětliv jsa na milosrdenství své 55 (Jakož mluvil k otcům našim, k Abrahamovi a semeni jeho) na věky. 56 I zůstala Maria s ní asi za tři měsíce, a potom navrátila se do domu svého. 57 Alžbětě pak naplnil se čas, aby porodila; i porodila syna. 58 A uslyšeli sousedé a přátelé její, že Hospodin veliké učinil s ní milosrdenství své, i radovali se spolu s ní. 59 Stalo se pak v den osmý, přišli obřezovati dítěte, a nazývali jej jménem otce jeho Zachariášem. 60 Ale odpověděvši matka jeho, řekla: Nikoli, ale slouti bude Jan. 61 I řekli k ní: Však nižádného není v rodu tvém, kterýž by sloul jménem tím. 62 I dávali návěští otci jeho, jak by ho chtěl nazývati. 63 A on požádav deštičky, napsal řka: Jan jest jméno jeho. I divili se všickni. 64 A ihned otevřela se ústa jeho a jazyk jeho, i mluvil, velebě Boha. 65 Tedy přišla bázeň na všecky sousedy jejich, a po všech horách Judských rozhlásána jsou všecka ta slova. 66 A všickni, kteříž o tom slyšeli, skládali to v srdci svém, řkouce: I kteraké dítě toto bude? A ruka Páně byla s ním. 67 Zachariáš pak otec jeho naplněn jest Duchem svatým, a prorokoval řka: 68 Požehnaný Pán Bůh Izraelský, že jest navštívil, a učinil vykoupení lidu svému, 69 A vyzdvihl nám roh spasení v domu Davida, služebníka svého, 70 Jakož mluvil skrze ústa proroků svých svatých, kteříž byli od věků, 71 O vysvobození z nepřátel našich, a z ruky všech, kteříž nás nenáviděli, 72 Aby učinil milosrdenství s otci našimi, a rozpomenul se na smlouvu svou svatou, 73 Na přísahu, kterouž jest přisáhl Abrahamovi, otci našemu, že jistě nám to dá, 74 Abychom bez strachu, z ruky nepřátel našich jsouce vysvobozeni, sloužili jemu, 75 V svatosti a v spravedlnosti před obličejem jeho, po všecky dny života našeho. 76 Ty pak, dítě, prorokem Nejvyššího slouti budeš, nebo předejdeš před tváří Páně připravovati cesty jeho, 77 Aby bylo dáno umění spasitelné lidu jeho na odpuštění hříchů jejich, 78 Skrze srdečné milosrdenství Boha našeho, v němžto navštívil nás, vyšed z výsosti, 79 Aby se ukázal sedícím v temnostech a v stínu smrti, k spravení noh našich na cestu pokoje. 80 Dítě pak rostlo a posilovalo se v duchu, a bylo na poušti až do dne zjevení svého lidu Izraelskému.
