Aufforderung zum Gehorsam – Warnung vor Götzendienst
1Und nun, Israel, höre auf die Ordnungen und auf die Rechtsbestimmungen, die ich euch zu tun lehre, damit ihr lebt und hineinkommt und das Land in Besitz nehmt, das der HERR, der Gott eurer Väter, euch gibt! (3Mo 18,5; 3Mo 19,19; 5Mo 1,8; 5Mo 4,40; 5Mo 5,1; 5Mo 6,1; 5Mo 6,24; 5Mo 7,11; 5Mo 8,11; 5Mo 11,32; Jer 11,6)2Ihr sollt nichts hinzufügen zu dem Wort, das ich euch gebiete, und sollt nichts davon wegnehmen, damit ihr die Gebote des HERRN, eures Gottes, haltet, die ich euch gebiete! (5Mo 5,29; 5Mo 13,1; Jos 1,7; Jer 26,2)3Eure Augen haben gesehen, was der HERR wegen des Baal-Peor[1] getan hat. Denn jeden, der dem Baal-Peor nachgelaufen ist, den hat der HERR, dein Gott, aus deiner Mitte vernichtet. (4Mo 25,3; Jos 22,17)4Ihr aber, die ihr dem HERRN, eurem Gott, anhinget, ihr seid heute alle am Leben. (5Mo 30,20; Jos 23,8)5Siehe, ich habe euch Ordnungen und Rechtsbestimmungen gelehrt, so wie der HERR, mein Gott, mir geboten hat, damit ihr danach handelt mitten in dem Land, in das ihr kommt, um es in Besitz zu nehmen. (3Mo 19,19; 5Mo 4,40; 5Mo 5,1; 5Mo 6,1; 5Mo 7,11; 5Mo 8,11; 5Mo 11,32; Jer 11,6; Hes 20,11; Hebr 3,5)6So bewahrt und tut sie! Denn das ist eure Weisheit und eure Einsicht in den Augen der Völker, die all diese Ordnungen hören. Und sie werden sagen: Ein wahrhaft weises und verständiges Volk ist diese große Nation! (Hi 28,28; Ps 19,8; Ps 119,98; Spr 1,4; Spr 14,34)7Denn wo gibt es eine große Nation, die Götter hätte, die[2] ihr ⟨so⟩ nahe wären wie der HERR, unser Gott, in allem, ⟨worin⟩ wir zu ihm rufen? (5Mo 33,29; Ps 145,18; Ps 148,14)8Und wo gibt es eine große Nation, die ⟨so⟩ gerechte Ordnungen und Rechtsbestimmungen hätte wie dieses ganze Gesetz, das ich euch heute vorlege? (Neh 9,13; Ps 119,138; Jes 42,21; Röm 7,12)9Nur nimm dich in Acht und achte sehr auf deine Seele[3], dass du die Dinge nicht vergisst, die deine Augen gesehen haben, und dass sie nicht aus deinem Herzen schwinden alle Tage deines Lebens! Und tue sie deinen Kindern und deinen Kindeskindern kund[4]: (1Mo 18,19; 5Mo 6,7; 5Mo 11,19; Jos 23,11; Spr 4,21; Jes 38,19; Jer 17,21)10An dem Tag, an dem du vor dem HERRN, deinem Gott, am Horeb standest, als der HERR zu mir sprach: »Versammle mir das Volk, dass ich sie meine Worte hören lasse, die sie lernen sollen, um mich zu fürchten all die Tage, solange sie auf dem Erdboden leben, und die sie ihre Kinder lehren sollen[5]!« (1Mo 18,19; 2Mo 19,9; 5Mo 5,29; 5Mo 6,2; 5Mo 6,7; 5Mo 11,19; 5Mo 14,23; 5Mo 17,19; 5Mo 31,12; Jes 38,19)11Da tratet ihr hinzu und standet unten am Berg. Der Berg aber brannte im Feuer bis ins Herz des Himmels, ⟨und da war⟩ Finsternis, Gewölk und Dunkel. (2Mo 19,9; 2Sam 22,10)12Und der HERR redete zu euch mitten aus dem Feuer. Die Stimme der Worte hörtet ihr, aber ihr saht keine Gestalt, nur eine Stimme ⟨war zu hören⟩. (5Mo 4,36; 5Mo 5,4; 5Mo 9,10; 5Mo 10,4; 1Kön 19,12)13Und er verkündigte euch seinen Bund, den zu halten er euch gebot: die zehn Worte. Und er schrieb sie auf zwei steinerne Tafeln. (2Mo 31,18; 5Mo 5,2; 5Mo 5,22; 5Mo 9,10; 1Kön 8,9)14Und mir gebot der HERR zu jener Zeit, euch Ordnungen und Rechtsbestimmungen zu lehren, damit ihr sie haltet in dem Land, in das ihr hinüberzieht, um es in Besitz zu nehmen. (2Mo 21,1; 5Mo 11,8; Mal 3,22)15So sollt ihr euch selbst[6] sehr in Acht nehmen – denn ihr habt keinerlei Gestalt gesehen an dem Tag, als der HERR am Horeb mitten aus dem Feuer zu euch redete –, (5Mo 4,36; 5Mo 5,4; 5Mo 9,10; 5Mo 10,4; Jos 23,11; 1Kön 19,12; Jer 17,21)16dass ihr nicht zu ⟨eurem⟩ Verderben handelt und euch ein Götterbild[7] macht in Gestalt irgendeines Götzenbildes, das Abbild eines männlichen oder eines weiblichen ⟨Wesens⟩, (2Mo 20,4; 2Mo 32,7; 5Mo 16,22; 5Mo 27,15; Hes 8,10)17das Abbild irgendeines Tieres, das ⟨es⟩ auf der Erde ⟨gibt⟩, das Abbild irgendeines geflügelten Vogels, der am Himmel fliegt,18das Abbild von irgendetwas, das auf dem Erdboden kriecht, das Abbild irgendeines Fisches, der im Wasser unter der Erde ist, (Röm 1,23)19und dass du deine Augen nicht zum Himmel erhebst und, wenn du die Sonne und den Mond und die Sterne, das ganze Heer des Himmels siehst, dich verleiten lässt und dich vor ihnen niederwirfst und ihnen dienst, die doch der HERR, dein Gott, allen Völkern unter dem ganzen Himmel zugeteilt hat! (1Mo 1,14; 5Mo 17,3; 2Kön 17,16; 2Chr 33,3; Hi 31,26; Jer 8,2; Zef 1,5)20Euch aber hat der HERR genommen und euch herausgeführt aus dem eisernen Schmelzofen, aus Ägypten, damit ihr das Volk seines Erbteils seid[8], so wie ⟨es⟩ heute ⟨ist⟩. (2Mo 1,14; 2Mo 19,5; 1Kön 8,51; Jer 11,4)21Und der HERR war euretwegen über mich erzürnt, und er schwor, dass ich nicht über den Jordan gehen und nicht in das gute Land kommen sollte, das der HERR, dein Gott, dir als Erbteil gibt. (5Mo 15,4; 5Mo 19,3; 5Mo 20,16; 5Mo 21,23; 5Mo 24,4)22Denn ich sterbe in diesem Land, ich gehe nicht über den Jordan. Ihr aber werdet hinüberziehen und dieses gute Land in Besitz nehmen. (4Mo 31,2; 5Mo 1,37)23Nehmt euch in Acht, dass ihr nicht den Bund des HERRN, eures Gottes, vergesst, den er mit euch geschlossen hat, und euch ein Götterbild[9] macht in der Gestalt von irgendetwas, das der HERR, dein Gott, dir verboten hat. (2Mo 20,4; 5Mo 5,2; 5Mo 16,22; 5Mo 27,15; 2Kön 17,38; Hes 8,10; Röm 1,23)24Denn der HERR, dein Gott, ist ein verzehrendes Feuer, ein eifersüchtiger Gott! (2Mo 24,17; 5Mo 5,9; 5Mo 6,15; 5Mo 9,3; Jes 10,17; Jes 30,33; Nah 1,2)25Wenn du Kinder und Kindeskinder zeugst und ihr im Lande alteingesessen seid und ihr zu ⟨eurem⟩ Verderben handelt und euch ein Götterbild[10] macht in der Gestalt irgendeines ⟨Lebewesens⟩ und tut, was böse ist in den Augen des HERRN, deines Gottes, ihn zu reizen, (2Mo 20,4; 5Mo 16,22; 5Mo 27,15; Ri 2,11; Ps 78,58; Hes 8,10)26so rufe ich heute den Himmel und die Erde als Zeugen gegen euch auf, dass ihr mit Sicherheit schnell weggerafft werdet aus dem Land, in das ihr über den Jordan zieht, um es in Besitz zu nehmen. Ihr werdet eure Tage darin nicht verlängern, sondern völlig vernichtet werden. (5Mo 8,19; 5Mo 28,20; 5Mo 30,18; 5Mo 30,19; 5Mo 31,28; 5Mo 32,1; Jos 23,16)27Und der HERR wird euch unter die Völker zerstreuen, und ihr werdet übrig bleiben, ein geringes Häuflein[11] unter den Nationen, wohin der HERR euch führen wird. (3Mo 26,33; 5Mo 28,62; Neh 1,8; Hes 11,16; Hos 9,17)28Dort werdet ihr Göttern dienen, dem Werk von Menschenhänden, aus Holz und Stein, die nicht sehen und nicht hören, nicht essen und nicht riechen können. (5Mo 28,36; Ps 115,4; Jes 44,9; Jer 10,5; Jer 16,13)29Dann werdet ihr von dort aus den HERRN, deinen Gott, suchen. Und du wirst ihn finden, wenn du mit deinem ganzen Herzen und mit deiner ganzen Seele nach ihm fragen wirst[12]. (1Sam 7,3; 2Chr 15,2; Ps 119,2; Jer 29,13; Joe 2,12)30Wenn du in Not bist und wenn alle diese Dinge dich getroffen haben am Ende der Tage, wirst du zum HERRN, deinem Gott, umkehren und auf seine Stimme hören. (Neh 1,9; Kla 3,40; Dan 10,14)31Denn ein barmherziger Gott ist der HERR, dein Gott. Er wird dich nicht aufgeben und dich nicht vernichten und wird den Bund deiner Väter nicht vergessen, den er ihnen geschworen hat. (2Mo 6,8; 2Mo 34,6; 3Mo 26,42; Neh 9,31)32Denn frage doch nach den früheren Tagen, die vor dir gewesen sind, von dem Tag an, als Gott den Menschen auf der Erde geschaffen hat, und von einem Ende des Himmels bis zum anderen Ende des Himmels, ob ⟨je⟩ eine solch große Sache geschehen oder ob dergleichen gehört worden ist. (Hi 8,8)33Hat ⟨je⟩ ein Volk die Stimme Gottes mitten aus dem Feuer reden hören, wie du sie gehört hast, und ist am Leben geblieben? – (5Mo 5,22)34Oder hat ⟨je⟩ ein Gott versucht hinzugehen, um sich eine Nation mitten aus einer ⟨anderen⟩ Nation zu holen durch Prüfungen, durch Zeichen und durch Wunder[13] und durch Krieg und mit starker Hand und mit ausgestrecktem Arm und durch große Schreckenstaten nach allem, was der HERR, euer Gott, in Ägypten vor deinen Augen für euch getan hat? (2Mo 6,6; 2Mo 10,21; 5Mo 1,30; 5Mo 26,8; Jos 24,7; Ps 78,12; Jer 32,21)35Du hast es zu sehen bekommen, damit du erkennst, dass der HERR der ⟨alleinige⟩ Gott ist. Außer ihm gibt es sonst keinen. (5Mo 6,4; 5Mo 7,9; 1Sam 2,2; 2Sam 7,22; 1Chr 17,20; Jes 43,10; Mk 12,32)36Vom Himmel her hat er dich seine Stimme hören lassen, um dich zu unterweisen. Und auf der Erde hat er dich sein großes Feuer sehen lassen, und mitten aus dem Feuer[14] hast du seine Worte gehört. (2Mo 19,18; 2Mo 20,22; 5Mo 4,12)37Und weil er[15] deine Väter geliebt und ihre Nachkommen nach ihnen erwählt hat, hat er dich mit seinem Angesicht, mit seiner großen Kraft aus Ägypten herausgeführt, (2Mo 12,41; 4Mo 20,16; 5Mo 7,6; 5Mo 10,15; Jes 43,4; Mal 1,2; Röm 11,28)38um Nationen vor dir zu vertreiben, größer und stärker als du, um dich herzubringen ⟨und⟩ dir ihr Land als Erbteil zu geben, so wie ⟨es⟩ heute ⟨ist⟩. (5Mo 7,1; 5Mo 9,1; 5Mo 11,23; 2Chr 20,7; Ps 44,2)39So erkenne denn heute und nimm dir zu Herzen, dass der HERR der ⟨alleinige⟩ Gott ist im Himmel oben und auf der Erde unten, keiner sonst! (5Mo 6,4; 5Mo 7,9; Jos 2,11; 1Sam 2,2; 2Sam 7,22; 1Chr 17,20; Jes 43,10; Mk 12,32)40Und halte seine Ordnungen und seine Gebote, die ich dir heute gebiete, damit es dir und deinen Kindern nach dir gut geht und damit du deine Tage verlängerst in dem Land, das der HERR, dein Gott, dir für immer[16] gibt. (2Mo 20,12; 5Mo 4,1; 5Mo 5,10; 5Mo 11,9; 5Mo 22,7; 5Mo 25,15; Jer 7,23; Jer 35,18)
Zufluchtsstädte im Ostjordanland
41Damals sonderte Mose drei Städte aus jenseits des Jordan, gegen Sonnenaufgang, (4Mo 35,14)42damit ein Totschläger dahin fliehen kann, der seinen Nächsten unabsichtlich[17] erschlagen hat und ihn nicht schon vorher[18] hasste – dass er in eine von diesen Städten fliehen und am Leben bleiben kann: (5Mo 19,2)43Bezer in der Wüste, im Land der Ebene, für die Rubeniter und Ramot in Gilead für die Gaditer und Golan in Baschan für die Manassiter. (Jos 20,8; Jos 21,27; 1Kön 22,3; 1Chr 6,63)
Einleitung zum Gesetz
44Und dies ist das Gesetz, das Mose den Söhnen Israel vorlegte. (Jos 12,1)45Dies sind die Zeugnisse, die Ordnungen und die Rechtsbestimmungen, die Mose zu den Söhnen Israel redete, als sie aus Ägypten zogen,46jenseits des Jordan im Tal, Bet-Peor gegenüber, im Land des Sihon, des Königs der Amoriter, der in Heschbon wohnte[19], den Mose und die Söhne Israel geschlagen haben, als sie aus Ägypten zogen. (4Mo 21,23; 5Mo 1,5; 5Mo 3,29; 5Mo 34,6)47Und sie nahmen sein Land in Besitz und das Land des Og, des Königs von Baschan, ⟨das Land⟩ der beiden Könige der Amoriter, die jenseits des Jordan ⟨wohnten, gegen⟩ Sonnenaufgang, (4Mo 21,33; Jos 24,12; Neh 9,22)48von Aroër an, das am Ufer des Flusses Arnon ⟨liegt⟩, bis an den Berg Sion, das ist der Hermon, (5Mo 3,8)49und die ganze Ebene[20] jenseits des Jordan, nach Osten zu[21] und bis an das Meer der Ebene[22] unterhalb der Abhänge des Pisga. (5Mo 3,17; Hes 47,8)
1Now, Israel, listen to the rules and laws I’m going to teach you. Obey them and you will live. You will go in and take over the land. The LORD was the God of your people of long ago. He’s giving you the land.2Don’t add to what I’m commanding you. Don’t subtract from it either. Instead, obey the commands of the LORD your God that I’m giving you.3Your own eyes saw what the LORD your God did at Baal Peor. He destroyed every one of your people who worshipped the Baal that was worshipped at Peor.4But all of you who remained true to the LORD your God are still alive today.5I have taught you rules and laws, just as the LORD my God commanded me. Obey them in the land you are entering to take as your very own.6Be careful to keep them. That will show the nations how wise and understanding you are. They will hear about all these rules. They’ll say, ‘That great nation certainly has wise and understanding people.’7The LORD our God is near us every time we pray to him. What other nation is great enough to have its gods that close to them?8I’m giving you the laws of the LORD today. What other nation is great enough to have rules and laws as fair as these?9Don’t be careless. Instead, be very careful. Don’t forget the things your eyes have seen. As long as you live, don’t let them slip from your mind. Teach them to your children and their children after them.10Remember the day you stood at Mount Horeb. The LORD your God was there. He said to me, ‘Bring the people to me to hear my words. I want them to learn to have respect for me as long as they live in the land. I want them to teach my words to their children.’11You came near and stood at the foot of the mountain. It blazed with fire that reached as high as the very heavens. There were black clouds and deep darkness.12Then the LORD spoke to you out of the fire. You heard the sound of his words. But you didn’t see any shape or form. You only heard a voice.13He announced his covenant to you. That covenant is the Ten Commandments. He commanded you to obey them. Then he wrote them down on two stone tablets.14At that time the LORD instructed me to teach you his rules and laws. You must obey them in the land you are crossing the River Jordan to take as your own.
Don’t make or worship statues of gods
15The LORD spoke to you at Mount Horeb out of the fire. But you didn’t see any shape or form that day. So be very careful.16Make sure you don’t commit a horrible sin. Don’t make for yourselves a statue of a god. Don’t make a god that looks like a man or woman or anything else.17Don’t make one that looks like any animal on earth or any bird that flies in the sky.18Don’t make a statue that looks like any creature that moves along the ground or any fish that swims in the water.19When you look up at the heavens, you will see the sun and moon. And you will see huge numbers of stars. Don’t let anyone tempt you to bow down to the sun, moon or stars. Don’t worship things the LORD your God has provided for all the nations on earth.20Egypt was like a furnace that melts iron down and makes it pure. But the LORD took you and brought you out of Egypt. He wanted you to be his very own people. And that’s exactly what you are.21The LORD was angry with me because of what you did. He promised that he would never let me go across the River Jordan. He promised that I would never enter that good land. It’s the land the LORD your God is giving you as your own.22I’ll die here in this land. I won’t go across the Jordan. But you are about to cross over it. You will take that good land as your own.23Be careful. Don’t forget the covenant the LORD your God made with you. Don’t make for yourselves a statue of any god at all. He has told you not to. So don’t do it.24The LORD your God is like a fire that burns everything up. He wants you to worship only him.25So don’t make a statue of a god. Don’t commit that horrible sin. Don’t do it even after you have had children and grandchildren. Don’t do it even after you have lived in the land a long time. If you do, that will be an evil thing in the sight of the LORD your God. You will make him angry.26Today I’m calling out to the heavens and the earth to be witnesses against you. Suppose you do these things. Then you will quickly die in the land you are going across the River Jordan to take over. You won’t live there very long. You will certainly be destroyed.27The LORD will drive you out of your land. He will scatter you among the nations. Only a few of you will remain alive there.28There you will worship gods that men have made out of wood and stone. Those gods can’t see, hear, eat or smell.29Perhaps while you are there, you will seek the LORD your God. You will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul.30All the things I’ve told you about might happen to you. And you will be in trouble. But later you will return to the LORD your God. You will obey him.31The LORD your God is tender and loving. He won’t leave you or destroy you. He won’t forget the covenant he made with your people of long ago. He gave his word when he made it.
The Lord is God
32Ask now about the days of long ago. Find out what happened long before your time. Ask about what has happened since the time God created human beings on the earth. Ask from one end of the world to the other. Has anything as great as this ever happened? Has anything like it ever been heard of?33You heard the voice of God speaking out of fire. And you lived! Has that happened to any other people?34Has any god ever tried to take one nation out of another to be his own? Has any god done it by testing his people? Has any god done it with signs and amazing deeds or with war? Has any god reached out his mighty hand and powerful arm? Or has any god shown his people his great and wonderful acts? The LORD your God did all those things for you in Egypt. With your very own eyes you saw him do them.35The LORD showed you those things so that you might know he is God. There is no other God except him.36From heaven he made you hear his voice. He wanted to teach you. On earth he showed you his great fire. You heard his words coming out of the fire.37He loved your people of long ago. He chose their children after them. So he brought you out of Egypt. He used his great strength to do it.38He drove out nations to make room for you. They were greater and stronger than you are. He will bring you into their land. He wants to give it to you as your very own. The whole land is as good as yours right now.39The LORD is God in heaven above and on the earth below. Today you must agree with that and take it to heart. There is no other God.40I’m giving you his rules and commands today. Obey them. Then things will go well with you and your children after you. You will live a long time in the land. The LORD your God is giving you the land for all time to come.
Cities to run to for safety
41Then Moses set apart three cities east of the River Jordan.42Suppose someone killed a person they didn’t hate and without meaning to do it. That person could run to one of those cities and stay alive.43Here are the names of the cities. Bezer was for the people of Reuben. It was in the high plains in the desert. Ramoth was for the people of Gad. It was in Gilead. Golan was for the people of Manasseh. It was in Bashan.
Moses gives the law to Israel
44Here is the law Moses gave the Israelites.45Here are its terms, rules and laws. Moses gave them to the people when they came out of Egypt.46They were now east of the River Jordan in the valley near Beth Peor. They were in the land of Sihon, the king of the Amorites. He ruled in Heshbon. But Moses and the Israelites won the battle over him after they came out of Egypt.47They captured his land and made it their own. They also took the land of Og, the king of Bashan. Sihon and Og were the two Amorite kings east of the River Jordan.48Their land reached from Aroer on the rim of the River Arnon valley to Mount Hermon.49It included the whole Arabah Valley east of the Jordan. It included land all the way to the Dead Sea below the slopes of Pisgah.
