1Und Gott sprach zu Jakob: Mache dich auf, zieh hinauf nach Bethel und wohne dort, und mache dort einen Altar dem Gott, der dir erschienen ist, als du vor deinem Bruder Esau flohst! (1Mo 28,10; 1Mo 28,13; 1Mo 28,19; 1Mo 29,1; 1Mo 31,13; 1Mo 35,15)2Da sagte Jakob zu seinem Haus und zu allen, die bei ihm waren: Schafft die fremden Götter weg, die in eurer Mitte sind, reinigt euch, und wechselt eure Kleider! (1Mo 18,19; 1Mo 31,19; 2Mo 19,10; Jos 24,14; 1Sam 7,3; 1Kor 10,7; 2Kor 7,1)3Dann wollen wir uns aufmachen und nach Bethel hinaufziehen, dort werde ich dem Gott einen Altar machen, der mir am Tag meiner Not geantwortet[1] hat und der mit mir gewesen ist auf dem Weg, den ich gegangen bin. (1Mo 28,15; 1Mo 48,15)4Und sie gaben Jakob alle fremden Götter, die in ihrer Hand waren, und die Ringe, die an ihren Ohren ⟨hingen⟩[2], und Jakob vergrub sie unter der Terebinthe, die bei Sichem ist. (Jos 24,25; Jes 2,20)5Und sie brachen auf. Und der Schrecken Gottes kam über die Städte, die rings um sie her waren, sodass sie den Söhnen Jakobs nicht nachjagten. (2Mo 23,27; 1Sam 14,15; 2Chr 14,13)6So kam Jakob nach Lus, das im Land Kanaan ⟨liegt⟩, das ist Bethel, er und alles Volk, das bei ihm war. (1Mo 28,15)7Und er baute dort einen Altar und nannte den Ort El-Bethel[3]; denn dort hatte Gott sich ihm offenbart, als er vor seinem Bruder floh. (1Mo 12,7; 1Mo 28,10; 1Mo 28,13; 1Mo 28,19; 1Mo 29,1; 1Mo 31,13; 1Mo 35,15)8Und Debora, die Amme Rebekkas, starb, und sie wurde unterhalb von Bethel begraben unter der Eiche; und er gab ihr den Namen Allon Bachut[4]. (1Mo 24,59)9Und Gott erschien dem Jakob noch einmal, als er aus Paddan-Aram[5] kam, und segnete ihn. (1Mo 32,30; 1Mo 48,3; Hos 12,5)10Und Gott sprach zu ihm: Dein Name ist Jakob. Dein Name soll nicht mehr Jakob heißen, sondern Israel soll dein Name sein! So gab er ihm den Namen Israel. (1Mo 32,29)11Und Gott sprach zu ihm: Ich bin Gott, der Allmächtige[6], sei fruchtbar und mehre dich; eine Nation und eine Schar von Nationen soll aus dir entstehen, und Könige sollen aus deinen Lenden hervorkommen[7]! (1Mo 17,1; 1Mo 17,6)12Und das Land, das ich Abraham und Isaak gegeben habe, dir will ich es geben, und deinen Nachkommen nach dir will ich das Land geben. (1Mo 12,7; 2Mo 2,24; Hebr 11,9)13Und Gott fuhr von ihm auf an dem Ort, an dem er mit ihm geredet hatte. (1Mo 17,22)14Und Jakob richtete einen Gedenkstein auf an dem Ort, an dem er mit ihm geredet hatte, ein Denkmal aus Stein, und spendete darauf ein Trankopfer und goss Öl darauf. (1Mo 28,18)15Und Jakob gab dem Ort, wo Gott mit ihm geredet hatte, den Namen Bethel. (1Mo 35,1)
Rahels Tod bei der Geburt Benjamins
16Und sie brachen von Bethel auf. Und es war noch eine Strecke Landes, um nach Efrata zu kommen, da gebar Rahel; und sie hatte es schwer mit ihrem Gebären. (1Mo 3,16)17Und es geschah, als sie es schwer hatte mit ihrem Gebären, da sagte die Hebamme zu ihr: Fürchte dich nicht, denn auch der wird dir ein Sohn! (1Mo 30,24)18Und es geschah, als ihre Seele ausging – denn sie musste sterben –, da gab sie ihm den Namen Ben-Oni[8]; sein Vater aber nannte ihn Ben-Jamin[9]. (1Mo 49,27; 1Sam 4,20)19Und Rahel starb und wurde begraben am Weg nach Efrata, das ist Bethlehem. (1Mo 48,7; Rut 1,2; Rut 4,11; 1Sam 16,4; 2Sam 23,14; 2Chr 11,6; Mi 5,1)20Und Jakob richtete über ihrem Grab einen Gedenkstein auf, das ist das Grabmal Rahels bis auf diesen Tag. (1Sam 10,2)
27Und Jakob kam zu seinem Vater Isaak nach Mamre, nach Kirjat-Arba, das ist Hebron, wo Abraham und Isaak sich als Fremde aufgehalten hatten. (1Mo 13,18; 1Mo 17,8; 1Mo 23,19; 1Mo 37,14; 1Mo 49,29; Jos 14,15)28Und die Tage Isaaks waren 180 Jahre. (1Mo 25,7)29Und Isaak verschied und starb und wurde versammelt zu seinen Völkern[11], alt und der Tage satt. Und seine Söhne Esau und Jakob begruben ihn. (1Mo 25,7)
1Then God said to Jacob, ‘Go up to Bethel and live there. Build an altar there to honour me. That’s where I appeared to you when you were running away from your brother Esau.’2So Jacob spoke to his family and to everyone with him. He said, ‘Get rid of the statues of false gods you have with you. Make yourselves pure by washing and changing your clothes.3Come, let’s go up to Bethel. There I’ll build an altar to honour God. He answered me when I was in trouble. He’s been with me everywhere I’ve gone.’4So they gave Jacob all the statues of false gods they had. They also gave him their earrings. Jacob buried those things under the oak tree at Shechem.5Then Jacob and everyone with him started out. The terror of God fell on the towns all around them. So no one chased them.6Jacob and all the people with him came to Luz. Luz is also called Bethel. It’s in the land of Canaan.7Jacob built an altar at Luz. He named the place El Bethel. There God made himself known to Jacob when he was running away from his brother.8Rebekah’s attendant Deborah died. They buried her body under the oak tree outside Bethel. So it was called Allon Bakuth.9After Jacob returned from Paddan Aram, God appeared to him again. And God blessed him.10God said to him, ‘Your name is Jacob. But you will not be called Jacob anymore. Your name will be Israel.’ So he named him Israel.11God said to him, ‘I am the Mighty God. Have children so that there will be many of you. You will become the father of a nation and a community of nations. Your later family will include kings.12I am giving you the land I gave to Abraham and Isaac. I will also give it to your children after you.’13Then God left him at the place where he had talked with him.14Jacob set up a sacred stone at the place where God had talked with him. He poured out a drink offering on it. He also poured olive oil on it.15Jacob named the place Bethel. That’s where God had talked with him.
Rachel and Isaac die
16They moved on from Bethel. Ephrath wasn’t very far away when Rachel began to have a baby. She was having a very hard time of it.17The woman who helped her saw that she was having problems. So she said to Rachel, ‘Don’t be afraid. You have another son.’18But Rachel was dying. As she took her last breath, she named her son Ben-Oni. But his father named him Benjamin.19So Rachel died. She was buried beside the road to Ephrath. Ephrath was also called Bethlehem.20Jacob set up a stone marker over her tomb. To this day, the stone marks the place where Rachel was buried.21Israel moved on again. He set up his tent beyond Migdal Eder.22While Israel was living in that area, Reuben went in and slept with Bilhah. She was the concubine of Reuben’s father. And Israel heard about it. Here are the 12 sons Jacob had.23Leah was the mother of Reuben, Jacob’s eldest son. Her other sons were Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar and Zebulun.24The sons of Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin.25The sons of Rachel’s female servant Bilhah were Dan and Naphtali.26The sons of Leah’s female servant Zilpah were Gad and Asher. These were Jacob’s sons. They were born in Paddan Aram.27Jacob came home to his father Isaac in Mamre. Mamre is near Kiriath Arba, where Abraham and Isaac had stayed. The place is also called Hebron.28Isaac lived 180 years.29Then he took his last breath and died. He was very old when he joined the members of his family who had already died. His sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
