Josefs harte Behandlung seiner Brüder

1 Dann befahl er dem, der über sein Haus war: Fülle die Säcke der Männer mit Nahrungsmitteln, so viel sie tragen können, und lege das Geld eines jeden oben in seinen Sack^[1]! (1Mo 42,25) 2 Meinen Kelch aber, den silbernen Kelch, sollst du oben in den Sack des Jüngsten legen mit dem Geld für sein Getreide! Und er tat nach Josefs Wort, das er geredet hatte. (1Mo 42,25) 3 Der Morgen wurde hell, da entließ man die Männer, sie und ihre Esel. 4 Sie waren eben zur Stadt hinausgegangen ⟨und noch⟩ nicht weit gekommen, da sagte Josef zu dem, der über sein Haus war: Mache dich auf, jage den Männern nach, und hast du sie erreicht, so sage zu ihnen: Warum habt ihr Gutes mit Bösem vergolten? 5 Ist es nicht der, aus dem mein Herr trinkt und aus dem er zu wahrsagen pflegt? Ihr habt schlecht ⟨daran⟩ getan, dass ihr ⟨so⟩ gehandelt habt! 6 Und er erreichte sie und redete diese Worte zu ihnen. 7 Da sagten sie zu ihm: Warum redet mein Herr solche Worte? Fern sei es von deinen Knechten^[2], eine solche Sache zu tun! 8 Siehe, das Geld, das wir oben in unseren Säcken fanden, haben wir dir aus dem Land Kanaan zurückgebracht! Und wie sollten wir aus dem Haus deines Herrn Silber oder Gold stehlen? (1Mo 43,21) 9 Derjenige von deinen Knechten, bei dem er gefunden wird, der soll sterben; und dazu wollen wir meinem Herrn zu Knechten werden. (1Mo 31,32; Ps 7,4) 10 Da sagte er: Nun gut, nach euren Worten, so sei es: Bei wem er gefunden wird, der sei mein Knecht, ihr aber sollt schuldlos^[3] sein. 11 Darauf hoben sie schnell jeder seinen Sack auf die Erde herab und öffneten jeder seinen Sack. 12 Und er durchsuchte: Beim Ältesten fing er an, und beim Jüngsten hörte er auf. Und der Kelch fand sich im Sack Benjamins. (1Mo 43,33) 13 Da zerrissen sie ihre Kleider, jeder belud seinen Esel, und sie kehrten in die Stadt zurück. (1Mo 37,29) 14 Und Juda und seine Brüder kamen in das Haus Josefs; und er war noch dort. Und sie fielen vor ihm nieder zur Erde. (1Mo 37,7) 15 Josef sagte zu ihnen: Was ist das für eine Tat, die ihr getan habt! Wusstet ihr nicht, dass ein Mann wie ich wahrsagen kann? 16 Da sagte Juda: Was sollen wir meinem Herrn sagen? Was sollen wir reden und wie uns rechtfertigen? Gott hat die Schuld deiner Knechte gefunden; siehe, wir sind die Knechte meines Herrn, sowohl wir als auch der, in dessen Hand der Kelch gefunden worden ist. 17 Er aber sagte: Fern sei es von mir^[4], so etwas zu tun! Der Mann, in dessen Hand der Kelch gefunden worden ist, der soll mein Knecht sein. Ihr aber zieht in Frieden hinauf zu eurem Vater. 18 Da trat Juda zu ihm und sagte: Bitte, mein Herr, lass doch deinen Knecht ein Wort reden zu den Ohren meines Herrn, und es entbrenne nicht dein Zorn gegen deinen Knecht, denn du bist dem Pharao gleich. (1Mo 18,30; 2Mo 32,22) 19 Mein Herr fragte seine Knechte: »Habt ihr ⟨noch⟩ einen Vater oder einen Bruder?« (1Mo 43,7) 20 Und wir sagten zu meinem Herrn: »Wir haben einen alten Vater und einen kleinen Jungen, ⟨der ihm⟩ im Alter ⟨geboren wurde⟩; dessen Bruder aber ist tot. So ist er allein von seiner Mutter übrig geblieben, und sein Vater liebt ihn.« (1Mo 37,3) 21 Da sagtest du zu deinen Knechten: »Bringt ihn zu mir herab, dass ich mein Auge auf ihn richte!« (1Mo 42,15) 22 Wir aber sagten zu meinem Herrn: »Der Junge kann seinen Vater nicht verlassen; verließe er seinen Vater, so würde der sterben.« 23 Da sprachst du zu deinen Knechten: »Wenn euer jüngster Bruder nicht mit euch herabkommt, dann sollt ihr mein Gesicht nicht mehr sehen.« (1Mo 42,15) 24 Und es geschah, als wir hinaufgezogen waren zu deinem Knecht, meinem Vater, da berichteten wir ihm die Worte meines Herrn. 25 Als nun unser Vater sagte: »Kehrt zurück, kauft uns ein wenig Nahrung! «, (1Mo 43,2) 26 da sagten wir: »Wir können nicht hinabziehen. Wenn unser jüngster Bruder bei uns ist, dann ziehen wir hinab. Denn wir können das Gesicht des Mannes nicht sehen, ohne dass unser jüngster Bruder bei uns ist.« (1Mo 42,15) 27 Da sagte dein Knecht, mein Vater, zu uns: »Ihr wisst^[5], dass meine Frau mir zwei geboren hat. (1Mo 46,19) 28 Der eine ist von mir weggegangen, und ich sagte: Fürwahr, er ist wirklich zerrissen worden; und ich habe ihn bis jetzt nicht ⟨mehr wieder⟩gesehen. (1Mo 37,33) 29 Und nehmt ihr auch den von mir weg und es begegnet ihm ein Unfall, dann bringt ihr mein graues Haar mit Unglück in den Scheol hinab.« (1Mo 37,35; 1Mo 42,4) 30 Und nun, wenn ich zu deinem Knecht, meinem Vater, käme und der Junge wäre nicht bei uns – hängt doch seine Seele an dessen Seele^[6] –, (1Sam 18,1) 31 dann würde es geschehen, dass er stirbt, wenn er sähe, dass der Junge nicht da ist. Dann hätten deine Knechte das graue Haar deines Knechtes, unseres Vaters, mit Kummer in den Scheol hinabgebracht. (1Mo 37,35) 32 Denn dein Knecht ist für den Jungen Bürge geworden bei meinem Vater und hat gesagt: »Wenn ich ihn nicht zu dir bringe, will ich alle Tage vor meinem Vater schuldig sein.« (1Mo 43,9) 33 Und nun, lass doch deinen Knecht anstelle des Jungen ⟨hier⟩ bleiben als Knecht meines Herrn, der Junge aber ziehe hinauf mit seinen Brüdern! (2Sam 24,17) 34 Denn wie könnte ich zu meinem Vater hinaufziehen, ohne dass der Junge bei mir ist? – Dass ich nicht das Unglück ⟨mit⟩ ansehen muss, das meinen Vater ⟨dann⟩ trifft. (Est 8,6)

1 And he commanded the steward of his house, saying, Fill the men' sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man' money in his sack' mouth. 2 And put my cup, the silver cup, in the sack' mouth of the youngest, and his corn money. And he did according to the word that Joseph had spoken. 3 As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away, they and their asses. 4 And when they were gone out of the city, and not yet far off, Joseph said unto his steward, Up, follow after the men; and when thou dost overtake them, say unto them, Wherefore have ye rewarded evil for good? 5 Is not this it in which my lord drinketh, and whereby indeed he divineth? ye have done evil in so doing. 6 And he overtook them, and he spake unto them these same words. 7 And they said unto him, Wherefore saith my lord these words? God forbid that thy servants should do according to this thing: 8 Behold, the money, which we found in our sacks'mouths, we brought again unto thee out of the land of Canaan: how then should we steal out of thy lord' house silver or gold? 9 With whomsoever of thy servants it be found, both let him die, and we also will be my lord' bondmen. 10 And he said, Now also let it be according unto your words: he with whom it is found shall be my servant; and ye shall be blameless. 11 Then they speedily took down every man his sack to the ground, and opened every man his sack. 12 And he searched, and began at the eldest, and left at the youngest: and the cup was found in Benjamin' sack. 13 Then they rent their clothes, and laded every man his ass, and returned to the city. 14 And Judah and his brethren came to Joseph' house; for he was yet there: and they fell before him on the ground. 15 And Joseph said unto them, What deed is this that ye have done? wot ye not that such a man as I can certainly divine? 16 And Judah said, What shall we say unto my lord? what shall we speak? or how shall we clear ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants: behold, we are my lord' servants, both we, and he also with whom the cup is found. 17 And he said, God forbid that I should do so: but the man in whose hand the cup is found, he shall be my servant; and as for you, get you up in peace unto your father. 18 Then Judah came near unto him, and said, Oh my lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord' ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant: for thou art even as Pharaoh. 19 My lord asked his servants, saying, Have ye a father, or a brother? 20 And we said unto my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loveth him. 21 And thou saidst unto thy servants, Bring him down unto me, that I may set mine eyes upon him. 22 And we said unto my lord, The lad cannot leave his father: for if he should leave his father, his father would die. 23 And thou saidst unto thy servants, Except your youngest brother come down with you, ye shall see my face no more. 24 And it came to pass when we came up unto thy servant my father, we told him the words of my lord. 25 And our father said, Go again, and buy us a little food. 26 And we said, We cannot go down: if our youngest brother be with us, then will we go down: for we may not see the man' face, except our youngest brother be with us. 27 And thy servant my father said unto us, Ye know that my wife bare me two sons : 28 And the one went out from me, and I said, Surely he is torn in pieces; and I saw him not since: 29 And if ye take this also from me, and mischief befall him, ye shall bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave. 30 Now therefore when I come to thy servant my father, and the lad be not with us; seeing that his life is bound up in the lad' life; 31 It shall come to pass, when he seeth that the lad is not with us , that he will die: and thy servants shall bring down the gray hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to the grave. 32 For thy servant became surety for the lad unto my father, saying, If I bring him not unto thee, then I shall bear the blame to my father for ever. 33 Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant abide instead of the lad a bondman to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brethren. 34 For how shall I go up to my father, and the lad be not with me? lest peradventure I see the evil that shall come on my father.
